Mmmm doughnuts. A weakness of mine that I only indulge in maybe a couple of times per year. By the time we stumbled in here, it was mid - evening and there were not a lot of choices. That said, it was the perfect stop on the way to the subway from the brewing company down the street. I needed a good cake doughnut to soak up the alcohol that I had been consuming. They have a cooler with packaged drinks like soda cans, iced tea. There is a drive-thru option too, though I believe this might be just for the coffee & donuts (cannot confirm though). The place is quite packed on a weekday afternoon, with most people getting takeouts and few sitting down for a quick bite. The place has seating for about 10-15ppl max. It was an early Friday morning and first aid CPR training was happening today in the office. So I decided to buy some donuts but not just any kind of donuts. I did not want Dunkin' Donuts. I was trying to find a place that sold Krispy Kreme doughnuts in New England within the Boston area. I was very surprised to find that Krispy Kreme does not exist up this way. So I decided to find a local donut company that was open as early as 7 AM. After going through 1,000,000 Dunkin' Donut locations that popped up while searching on the Waze app, I finally found a place called Doughboy Donuts that was on the way to the office. So that's where I decided to go, hoping in the back of my mind that the donuts were good. I noticed that they were busy for such an early time of the morning. The place is open 24/7 so I hoped that I could possibly get some fresh donuts or possibly warm donuts. Service was quick although you have a very small area where you place orders. As soon as you walk in, the counter is about 4 feet in front of you. It's a vibe. They have handwritten menus on the wall, which always finds to be really great from an artist perspective, but often times it can be hard to read the handwriting in some places. I was able to clearly read the menu inside Doughboy Donuts. I decided to order a dozen of glazed donuts and a dozen of assorted donuts. I was told promptly that they could provide me half a dozen of glazed donuts, and a dozen assorted donuts. I thought they were joking when they told me that initially because they're obviously open 24/7 and they sell donuts. I asked why I am only able to get half a dozen of glazed donuts. They proceeded to let me know that they only had a dozen glazed donuts, and if I bought a dozen glazed, then they will be out of glazed donuts. At that point, I was really perplexed because I thought it was another joke based on their reasoning that that they provided to me. I was thinking to myself, "Is this NOT a donut shop that wants to sell donuts?" Lol... It did not make any sense to me at all. I could tell that she noticed the very strange face I was making trying to figure it out. If all you have is 12 dozen glazed and someone wants to buy the 12 dozen glaze... You sell the 12 dozen glazed donuts to them. Then you are out of glazed donuts until you make more. But they also had plain donuts right beside the glazed donuts. So I was thinking in my mind, can they not just glaze more plain donuts? That way they have more glazed donuts after I buy a dozen? Another lady who was working the counter, offered it to go ahead and give me the 12 glazed, but I decided to just accept the six and go with the 12 assorted donuts. It was quite funny to me. I got to the office and everyone loved the donuts because they were light and flaky with a wonderful taste. The group was very happy that I did not bring Dunkin' Donuts because their donuts are heavy for such an early morning session. Others in the office who were able to also get some donuts before lunch also ranted and raved about how great the donuts tasted . I also ate a couple of donuts and they were very delicious!! But I DID WONDER whether or not they make their own donuts though lol since they did not have a lot of glazed donuts early in the morning. I would be willing to buy donuts again from Doughboy Donuts without a doubt since I cannot buy a Krispy Kreme location in New England. The service was quick. The people working were very courteous and helpful. It had a local vibe feel that appealed to me. The cost of a dozen donuts were a little higher than I expected, though. A dozen glazed was $28 and a dozen assorted donuts was exactly the same price. Maybe it's New England that has the price so high.? I'm not quite sure. Unfortunately I forgot to take pics. read more

Do you need a donut in the middle of the night? Of course you do! If you think you have to go get a crappy donut from Dunkin, you're wrong. You can get an actually good, late night donut at Doughboy. Both the cake and the yeast style are excellent. My favorite is the butternut with a cold bottle of milk. We arrived around 10 AM on a Saturday and the donut selection was a little slim based on what I was hoping for. I had a breakfast sandwich and a chocolate donut. Both were good but not exceptional. My son had a honey bun and a different donut. My youngest son just ended up with a cookie. Everything was pretty good. A classic place in southie open 24/7 to satisfy all your donut cravings! We came here on a Saturday afternoon and got 1/2 dozen box of donuts. I'm so glad they still had plenty of flavors to choose from. We got marble stick, strawberry frosted, Coco Krispy, lemon filled, maple, and cinnamon. These donuts are normal sized (like ones you'd find a Dunkin) which makes them so easy to eat it all in just a few bites. The lemon filled was good, tart, and actually plenty of lemon filling inside! I also enjoyed the crispy Coco krispies that added a great crunch to the donut. My favorite being the strawberry frosted as a classic being soft and flavorful. These donuts are best eaten on the day you get them since they do get stale just like any other donut within a few days. I visited Doughboy Donuts around midnight on a Friday night with my wife, and we were instantly transported back in time the moment we walked in. The build is old and has character to it. Now, the donuts- -Glazed donut: Somewhat spongy and has a nice level of sweetness. I was not a huge fan, but if you like a spongy raised donut, you'll be into it. -Glazed cake stick: An absolutely huge, dense cake stick with a pleasantly sweet glaze. I could have gone for a crispier exterior, but it is tasty. -Vanilla cream filled- By far the best donut I had at Doughboy, and one of the best vanilla cream donuts I've ever eaten. It is outrageously sweet, overflows with cream, and has a delicious, slightly crispy exterior, which I was missing on the glazed cake stick. If you enjoy sweet vanilla cream donuts, you owe it to yourself to try this. -Coconut cake donut- I had this two days later, and it was still quite tasty. Its coconut topping is top notch. I found their coffee to be mild and bland, like a lot of other traditional donut shops. If you're looking for a fancy, sleek donut shop, go to Blackbird Donuts. Nothing like a donut shop that is cheap with no gimmicks. In a city like Boston, there are plenty of gourmet donut shops. But they'll never compete with the real-deal. The donuts are not as large as you'd expect from a shop like this. They're comparable to the size of a donut from Dunkin. I did not particularly enjoy the chocolate or blueberry glazed because I like donuts that are almost *too* sweet. So these donuts are probably more pleasing to a palate that enjoys more-balanced sweets. The glazed cruller was very yummy. Perfect balance of sweetness without tasting overly-fried. However, the Boston cream donut...out of this world. So delicious that I wished I had gotten all Boston cream and nothing else. If you love Boston cream donuts, make an effort to get one here and you will not be disappointed. The filling was abundant and the chocolate frosting was to die for. I got two donuts and I was not completely sold. The selection at that time in the morning was slim. The style of donut was not much different than Dunkin. They were fine, don't get me wrong, but I much prefer a donut with a heavier consistency. But anyway, it's a great local joint; far better to give them business than the national chains. Update! Baby K and Pearl wanted to go back a second day, and then a third. They RAVE about the iced coffee. MOST IMPRESSIVE, though, was the repeated, extremely positive customer service provided by the staff, especially the young woman with the tattooed arm.
