I'd heard of Sam LaGrassa's for years but had never managed to make it there. My first introduction ended up being at a corporate event in Boston's Seaport district, where lunch arrived courtesy of one of the city's best-known sandwich shops. The catering was impressive. Before anyone even took a bite. Every half sandwich was individually wrapped and clearly labeled, with salads and sides neatly organized, making it easy for a large group to grab lunch without the usual catering chaos. The choices were wide and varied. We took our lunches upstairs to a rooftop seating area overlooking the Seaport, which made for a pretty great setting on a beautiful afternoon. I chose the Gobbler, and it lived up to the hype I've since read in other reviews. At first glance it sounds like a Thanksgiving leftover sandwich, but it's much more than that. The turkey was fresh and flavorful, and it was complemented by stuffing, cranberry sauce, spinach, pepper jack cheese, and just enough chipotle mayo to add an unexpected kick, without overwhelming everything else. It's one of those combinations that sounds busy on paper but comes together remarkably well. I spoke with several others over lunch, and they were equally impressed with their choices. That's always a good sign when you're feeding a crowd. It's one thing to make a great sandwich to order; it's another to deliver dozens of them catered while maintaining that level of quality. Since this was catered, I can't really comment on the restaurant itself. The service on the catering side, however, was evident in how thoughtfully everything was prepared and packaged, and the rooftop setting where we enjoyed lunch certainly didn't hurt. Needless to say, this won't be my last Sam LaGrassa's sandwich. I fully intend to visit the restaurant one of these days, and in the meantime I'll spend some time trying to recreate that Gobbler at home (maybe with sliced roasted chicken, but also with turkey when I have it). Was craving a sandwich so had to try Sam LaGrassa. We were driving in Boston but didnt realize how bad parking is downtown. It was so bad that we couldnt find a spot so my partner had to get out and order, while I drove around the block. But besides the parking. The Pastrami Reuben was expensive but very good. They gave you a generous amount of the pastrami. The bread was a very tasty pumpernickel. Will definitely come back. But I may just take the metro in or order for delivery lol read more

Good quality pastrami but the price is ridiculous. $30 for a standard size pastrami is too much. It is in downtown Boston but still. Also parking is horrendous. We ended up having to drop me off at o go in and order and we took our sandwich to go since we couldn't find anywhere to park nearby. We got the pastrami reuben. About 5 minutes later our sandwich came out. I like that they served it in a cardboard box so it doesn't get squished. The sandwich had a good amount of meat and sauerkraut. Sam LaGrassa's is a Boston legend that's lost its way. As a local, I used to defend Sam LaGrassa's to anyone who called it a tourist gimmick. It was the gold standard for a real sandwich in the city. Sadly, the magic has faded. Between the soaring prices and the shrinking portions, the value just isn't there anymore. You can taste the "corner-cutting"--the flavors aren't as bold as they used to be, and the sandwiches feel noticeably smaller even though the cost has increased exponentially - I mean $30 for a sammy?! It should have gold in it! Even then, I'd keep coming once in awhile if the service was worth it. but honestly - the staff seems burnt out even bright early in the morning. Looking for lunch while walking the Freedom Trail so we walk over and the place is pretty busy so things look good. Reviewing the menu and wow...this place is pricey. $25+ each for a North Shore Roast Beef and a Chicken Cutlet. You do get a ton of roast beef and the sandwiches are tasty...but man, $60+ for 2 sandwiches and 2 cokes is pretty outta control. This chipotle pastrami is $30 and it is the most expensive sandwich I ever had! I don't normally eat pastrami so this is my first impression. This was a big sandwich with lots of flavors and the pastrami to cole slaw ratio is a very good balance. I also really liked the Chipotle sauce with it. The service was great. I ordered in person and got it to go. They were very nice and got my order in a timely manner. There is lots of seating inside but it is super busy and there were no seating. The only thing I regret about coming here is stopping by on my last day in town. Had I known how good the sandwiches were, then I would have ate here a few more times. I came upon opening on a weekday and quite a few people followed. It must get busy here on weekends because this weekday opening was busy. They had a huge catering delivery the staff was feverishly working to load up as well. The staff moved pretty quickly and got us our order fast. Everything was really good. Ok..10 out of 10 sandwich! I got the white tuna on Scala bread. Perfectly sized sandwich. And the way they package it makes it like a gift. Perfect to take to a park or a hidden spot to enjoy. Love their selection of drinks, especially Jarritos which are glass instead of plastic bottles. I got the mango. Now the drawback...the prices. I got the only sandwich I could afford on the menu. This beast is stacked with chipotle mayo, BBQ sauce, melted jack cheese, applewood smoked bacon, Bermuda onion, and hot cherry peppers, all packed between a round roll. It was smoky with just the right amount of heat from the chipotle mayo, balanced beautifully by the subtle sweetness of the cherry peppers. Everything is made better by adding bacon for a savory crunch, and the pastrami itself? Perfect, tender, and flavorful. I ordered it to go, and they handed it over in this surprisingly cool little box that opens up so you don't need a plate--nice touch for presentation and it keeps from adding to the pile of dishes in the sink. So the service and the food was exemplary I had the spicy chicken cutlet sandwich, which was phenomenal. I've definitely never had a better sandwich in my life, but it was the price of what I can get a steak dinner at certain places which is a little ridiculous we went at work and everyone there got something different for the most part, and everybody loved their sandwiches. Been to Sam LaGrassa's a handful of times over the last decade, but writing my first review now. My partner and I got a pastrami diablo and southwestern pastrami - TASTE: 5/5 - favorite was the diablo w its sweet BBQ sauce and hot cherry peppers! The southwestern more so highlighted the meaty pastrami itself TEXTURE: 4/5 - the onions and cold jack cheese worked well in the diablo, though I preferred the melted pepper jack cheese and grilled light rye bread in the southwestern PRICE: 3/5 - prices have continued to rise over the years unfortunately. Total came to $56 for the two sandwiches SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - the diablo was loaded thick on the round roll, while the pastrami was more of a flat sandwich. I came Friday for a late lunch with a friend around 1pm and there were some open seats. We split two sandwiches, the Chipotle Pastrami and Pastrami Caprese (toasted). The caprese seemed unique and it was an interesting combination. The fresh ingredients were a nice contrast to the chipotle pastrami and it was served on an Asiago roll which was so good. I would probably re-order the chipotle between the two though. They cut the sandwiches in half so it was easy to split. And they were each served with a mildly pickled pickle. It took a while to receive our sandwiches even though it wasn't super crowded. We checked on them a couple times and were told the hot sandwiches take longer.
