Five stars for the food, three stars for everything else. We tried Calisto's for lunch during our trip to Boston. I didn't realize this would be a true hole in the wall; no bathrooms, only three or four tables, you order at the counter. So if you're looking for a sit-down spot, have a backup plan. We got lucky and grabbed a table but it felt like a miracle. This is really more of a takeout spot. The menu is simple: cold and hot sandwiches, about four or five options per category. The sandwiches were delicious, especially the Calabria, packed with prosciutto, spicy soppressata, hot capicola, sharp provolone, Calabrian chili aioli, and arugula. They couldn't substitute the arugula, so I skipped it but it was still the star of the show. My husband had the roast beef and it was good, but the Calabria won. Fair warning: these sandwiches are HUGE. We were so full from lunch we could barely finish dinner and my one regret was not splitting one. Come hungry or come with a plan! The place is a bit chaotic. It took close to 30 minutes to get our order; they were slammed. The guy at the counter was all over the place and forgot to give us our drinks or tell us to grab them from the fridge. But at $17 for a sandwich this thick and this good, it's a great deal in Boston's South End. The flavors made it all worth it. read more

I had such high expectations of this deli after hearing so much about it on social media. I stopped by a bit before their weekday lunch rush and waited about 15 minutes for one of their hoagies. I tried The South End, which was a super unique combination of ingredients and flavors and sounded like an elevated turkey sandwich. And this sandwich was MASSIVE. Like..... almost impossible for 1 hungry person to finish massive. And, unfortunately, because it's so massive, it felt almost completely impossible to eat. At no point was I able to get a bite containing all the toppings. I had one bite that was all turkey, one bite that was all slaw, or one bite that was all mayo, etc etc. I'm not sure if I just got a bad batch of something, but the bacon on my sandwich was also pretty chewy and inedible which was disappointing. The sandwich also got soggy very quickly, so definitely keep that in mind if you plan on ordering takeout. I love the thought behind these sandwiches and the energy the staff brings but the execution was just not what I was hoping for. read more

There's some seating inside, but it's seemed like almost orders were take out. It would be nice if they have online ordering but they seemed busy so I can see why they don't. Going to be honest, wasn't impressed with my sandwich at all. I got the south end and was really disappointed with quality, presentation, and the proportions. There was barely any bacon and the quality of the bacon was not great, you could tell it was old and there was one strip in the whole thing. I really could my taste or see any whipped brie. The picture online is pretty misleading. The apple chunks were massive and felt like that was majority of the sandwich. My son is a recent grad from Northeastern University and he said when we were planning our weekend together that a must go to is this sandwich shop; he said, don't worry, we'll be able to split a sandwich between the two of us. And believe you me, my son and I can both put it away when it's good. We were not only amazingly satisfied with splitting a sandwich, the Roman golden, but we were full! Make sure to buy the chips as an "appetizer" because the sandwiches are made fresh and they do take a little bit of time. You'll get a little hungry so nosh on the chips while you are waiting. First time I was there. Ordered the the Calisto to go. It took a while to receive the order. When I got home (5 min away) opened the wrapping and found a soggy mess. The sandwich was poorly made. Absolutely amazing sandwiches but unfortunately not a very well run business. Yes, they went viral for the sandwich quality and size, but they're also a handful of gentlemen in their early 20s with seemingly almost no restaurant experience at all. Constant confusion. Poor communication. Absurdly long wait times. I got a cold turkey sandwich and waited a full hour for it until after they closed. Great product. Poor service. I just tried one of the massive breakfast sandwiches at Calisto's Deli in South Boston. It was definitely the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had! Apart from weighing about a pound, "The Butcher" had a perfect combination of meats, cheese, and condiments. The wait is a bit long but that's what you're gonna get when a place just opens up and it's all over Instagram. Definitely will be back again. Tried for the first time: Very friendly service but it took 30 minutes and the space was crowded and uncomfortable . Sunday, at 1:00 so no surprise. Got the Calabria, and it was massive but not very good. The problem: it was so saturated with "Calabrian chili aioli" (mayo) and balsamic vinegar that you couldn't taste the meat or cheese. The greens were limp, the bread was soggy (I did wait 30 minutes before eating) and the flavors were tart, acidic, not balanced, and masked what should have been the star ingredients, the meat. Lastly, some of the peppers were sliced right at the stem and were tough and inedible. cost $20 and I would have been disappointed even if it were $4. read more

What she brought back was a chicken cutlet sandwich. they had a whole conversation about chicken salad, tuna salad, and what it took. He made an offer to make the sandwich even though he was about to close. Not sure how you get chicken salad and chicken cutlet mixed up, but they found away. Extremely disappointed. I went in there a little after 6pm knowing they closed at 6:30. The guy told me he couldn't do hot sandwiches because he had turned off the grill which was fine because I wanted two chicken salad sandwiches anyway. He told me he had to check to see if they had it because they "make it in batches" he told me they didn't but offered me tuna salad instead while stating he knows it doesn't taste the same. I said no, it's okay and was prepared to leave but then he offered to make it anyway. He said if I didn't mind waiting 10-15 minutes and I said are you sure ? He said "yes, I told myself I would never turn down a chance to make a sandwich when I bought the place." With that being said, I get home and to my displeasure he made me two CHICKEN CUTLET SANDWICHES instead of CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICHES. And there was no confusion on what I asked for because we held a whole conversation about it beforehand. I will not be returning. Wanted to check out this gem because they have boars head brand cold cuts and it was really awesome !!! Stopped by here after a day in the city. I love little sandwich/deli shops so i was super excited to stop by here. The guy behind the counter was so so nice and welcoming. Loved chatting with him and he helped me order. I knew i wanted a pastrami sandwich bc that's what's popular. I trusted him and told him to make it the way he makes it! Such a nice and friendly experience. We ended up going across the street to the park to eat the sandwich. it was smaller than expected and not filled with pastrami like you would expect.
