I think 3 stars is on the generous side. I had one goal-to get a sandwich at a place I'd never been before. I knew going in I wasn't gonna be getting any awesome breads and unusual combos, but the prices were right. They do bkfst and had prepared hot dinners at a good price. Yelp said they closed at 3 but at 1:50 they seemed to be cleaning and weren't happy w my tuna melt request. Look at the pic, does anything look like that hit a grill? I walk in on a Friday, the boys behind the counter say "eh-ah Lawwura...whatdaya tink is lookin good taday?" I could pick anything on the menu and they would have some way of connecting the health benefits of said lunch item to myself....i.e "I think the fish looks good today boys" and they would respond "oooooh yeazzz. It's friiiday. You have da feeesh. Plus feeesh, it's good for your eyes. Keep you healthy". On a Tuesday, it could be the macaroni and cheese w/ a salad and they would say "oooooh yeazz. Macaroooni n cheez, very good for you. Keep you nice n strong". If nothing else, I love these people. Warm and friendly, and above all, honest. Their prices are beyond fair. The aforementioned fish dinner was $6.50, and included a delicious baked filet of white fish (haddock or cod maybe?) topped with a crispy buttered breadcrumb crust, a side of green beans and potato. Can't beat it. And the mac and cheese w a greek salad, $5.75. After coming here for a few months now I realized I was just unbelievably hungry my first time here which led to my 4 star review. In actually it actually deserves more a 3 star. The food is not bad, but it isn't great either. Certain dishes are substantially better than others. As an example, i tried their haddock one and truly enjoyed it. The next day I had their chicken dish and had to throw half the chicken out because it was so rubbery. The mashed potatoes which I so raved about...actually not that great. It tastes like it's made out of a box, which is okay, but not deserving of a rave review. I would still recommend this place if your in the mood for a lot of food. I would rate this as an above average lunch spot. They have quite a few specialties and tend towards the Greek. They hot entrees are very good and a lot of bang for the buck. I had Corned Beef and Cabbage, something i don't crave nor find often. The quality was great, almost as good as my mom's and the quantity... Well I shan't be a svelte 165 for much longer. It must have been about 2 lbs for $6.25. My coworker had a spinach pie, macaroni, and salad for a similar price. Both of us enjoyed ours to completion. I have continued to dine here quite a bit. Their Salad/Rice/Chicken Kabob for $6.25 is a great light plentiful plate. They have real food here. That may seem like an interesting way to begin a review but, that was my first impression. I saw on Yelp that they had excellent chicken noodle soup, a rainy day staple. so I trudged out in the sprinkles to get some. It looks a bit like a cafeteria, which is not ideal, but take a look inside the "hot entrees" end of the counter. Half roast chickens, macaroni and cheese, baked haddock, roast pork, ravioli. What! I will so be back to try some of those. The guys behind the counter have clearly been there for years, and seemed very kind and helpful. Got my chicken noodle soup and a grilled cheese for under $7. This is some real chicken noodle soup. Not from a can, not made with bullion. Chicken. And noodles. And carrots. And a tiny bit of celery/onion. And delicious broth. Really, I could go on. But this ranks up there with my mom's - simple yet excellent. The grilled cheese was something I could make at home, white bread and American cheese goodness, perfect paired with soup. I love finding local places Downtown, especially ones with clearly homemade comfort food. There's only so many times you can eat Panera. I'm full, happy, and want to take a nap. Hot breakfast Downtown! Screw cold cereal. You can get in and out of this place in the morning on your way to work in 5 minutes. I love this place. The people working there are great. The first time, I placed this convoluted order, and the cook heard it and fixed it so that I got exactly what I wanted and saved a buck. The prices are awesome. 2 eggs, toast, potatoes and bacon--$3.25. The food is REAL. No pre-packaged frozen potato hashbrowns. Real potatoes that are cooked perfectly. I watched them cut open a blueberry muffin, butter it and throw it on the grill, and I am pretty sure that I am going to have to try that next time. The best things about this place: Cash only: This clearly keeps their costs down, where else can you get a large coffee for so cheap downtown? I called ahead to order my food. They asked me how I wanted my eggs cooked (and they were cooked to perfection) and my food was waiting for me when I got there, it didn't even take 5 mins. Also, when I asked if I could add a coffee to my order the guy said he would pour it for me when I got there AND HE REMEMBERED. I'll have you know, that I notice when I order the "Breakfast Special" that it is advertised as coming with coffee and meat, however when you ask for this (because they just don't give it to you automatically) you end up getting charged extra for each!!! New England's Best Coffee is what? $1.50 per pound? And you need to charge me extra for it? Please. There are waaaaaaaaay too many other options in this neighborhood to get charged what's slowly becoming more and more, a ten dollar breakfast, and a pretty mediocre one at that. Five dollars at Clover, seven dollars with an espresso drink at Boston Common Coffee, and seven dollars at Bruegger's for the smoked salmon sandwich. I used to visit this breakfast place for a few months and last week was the last time. The cook(who takes most of the orders) was extremely rude and sarcastic. Doing a 3 week training at downtown crossing and this place is around the corner on Arch Street. My colleagues discovered it. The food is fantastic, the customer service is quick, polite and gracious, and the place is clean and efficient. We've tried many dishes from the breakfasts - grilled corn bread, fruit cub, bacon and egg sandwiches, etc and for lunch: salad, chicken soup, baked haddock, mashed potatoes and gravy, seafood pie, Mac n cheese, steak tips, stuffed cabbage! It's places like Deli One that make me love Boston. This is what I'd imagined places were like here. Sort of like Cheers, but not annoying. It's not fancy, decor being an afterthought here, but you're not there for the ambiance. You're there for the food which is solid. Once inside the chaotic deli you should note there are two lines. One for hot food, one for sandwiches. You have you standard fare for the hot food: mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, meatloaf, and a rotating daily special. All for a very reasonable price (usually less than $6). Though the hot food gets rave reviews from coworkers I dig the egg salad. While the sandwich is good, it's the man who makes it that keeps me coming back. Every time I am greeted with 'ey boss! and a little banter about the day. I don't bother ordering any more because he knows what I want and most of the time it's made before I even get to the counter. This is why I love it, it's personal without getting all up in my business. Over all this is a great lunch option in DTX. It's not a chain so you can get something other than a burrito/bagel/same/same/same for less than chain prices. I'm giving these guys 5 stars because mainly because they give you a lot of food and it's not expensive at all. Breakfast dishes without a drink are about 4 dollars and change. The lunch as everyone else has explained are under 7 dollars. The portions are huge for lunch and I always have food leftover. I'm a big fan of the spanakopitas (spinach pie), its a fat pie and it comes with a huge salad. This is the only breakfast place i know of that serves corn beef hash in downtown. Two times I have gone there, two times I have been yelled at - there won't be a third. I said I had three different breakfast sandwiches to order and I start to list them and on #2 the grill guy - john I believe - starts yelling at me telling me how I should say the order "no! Similar to other reviews for this place, for a while I was coming here regularly because it's convenient to my office. The beef stew was a particular favorite. I stopped supporting this place after I got sick from a roast beef sandwich one time. If you are ever downtown Boston and have a craving for pancakes, this is the spot! The have a breakfast special which consists of pancakes, meat (such as bacon) and eggs. This is the only spot downtown area that I have found to sell pancakes and they are good too. I just wish they gave more than 2 because they are extremely tasty.
