This place was recommended by someone at our hotel. It was about a block away. We wanted a simple breakfast before our flight. It's a walk up and order place. The person at the register was very friendly. We ordered our food and she brought it to us. It's self serve coffee. I got the breakfast burrito on a spinach tortilla and my husband got a bagel with cream cheese. My burrito was very good. It had egg, potato, bacon in it and at the bottom was all the cheese. It was very good and exactly what I wanted. The bagel was good but had a huge clump of cream cheese. My husband took about half off his bagel. By far, this was the best, reasonable price we had over our stay. Not overpriced and good food. They had a trash can and place to put dirty dishes. Some people left their stuff on the tables. They cleaned up pretty quick and would wipe all the tables down. It seemed clean. read more

I have used Max's Deli twice now to cater lunch for customer meetings in the Seaport, and both times they've been fabulous! Their website allows me to place my order ahead of time easily, they deliver early and communicate well, their food is packaged great, and the sandwiches have always tasted fresh and high quality. Max's Deli New York style in the heart of Downtown financial district Boston was recommended by the hotel employees where I was staying. Opened at 6 am in the morning they are ready to welcome their guests. As I walked in I was greeted by the employee behind the counter. I ordered out of the breakfast sections egg and cheese with fresh grilled vegetables. The price was amazing for the size of the burrito. As soon as I received my Order and took a bite at my burrito it was out of site. The freshness of the grilled vegetables alone with the egg and cheese it was an amazing flavorful combinations. With a little bit of a hot sauce wow I was very impressed by the ladies behind the counter. They aimed to please and the did not disappoint . I highly recommend this establishment. We are extremely grateful to Max's Deli Cafe for stepping in and catering at our wedding for 200 people with only 4 days' notice. While we recommend contacting them much earlier, this is a testament to their skill, hard work, and customer service. We were able to put together a varied menu that satisfied all of our needs in terms of dietary restrictions and included delicious appetizers - many of our guests complimented the food and we were beyond impressed with how great everything looked and tasted. Been here twice now while breezing through town traveling. Delicious breakfast served in awesome diner-y atmosphere. Fast and delicious. We had a steak and cheese omelet and meat and eggs. Good coffee with refills. I love that the customers have a great mix of locals along with a handful of tourists. I've only been here for breakfast but the menu looks really good with lots of variety for lunch. I was walking around town and spotted Max's Deli. I thought I would go in and try out their Corned Beef. Unfortunately it turned out to be a big mistake. It was nothing like I imagined. It started with a dysfunctional ordering system and got worse from there. I managed to order a Corned Beef on a Bulkie Roll with brown mustard. I requested pickles with it. I was informed that they cost extra and of course I said no problem. My sandwich was thrown together like it was on an assembly line. The corned beef was not freshly cut it was taken with tongs out of a tray of previously cut meat. Then the meat was placed on a panini maker to warm up I don't recall asking for hot corned beef WTF Anyway not to prolong a bad review my sandwich was skimpy (see my photo below) I was charged extra for a few not even bite sized slices of pickle. They must get 20 slices from one small pickle. RIPOFF. Fifteen dollars for a small crappy sandwich made incorrectly and few extra small bites of pickle. My colleague picked up lunch today and after I looked at their menu, I chose the "Turkey sandwich, Thanksgiving style." Let me tell you, this is a monster. There's a whole lot of food going on here. A healthy portion of thin-sliced turkey, followed by stuffing and then cranberry sauce. Nicely done and I could barely eat half. Tasty and a good portion. This place doesn't kid around when it comes to sandwiches. I first got introduced to this place when they somehow did a free catering event at my company. Shrimp, steak, the whole nine yards. Then, they gave us like 999999 coupons for 1 dollar off a meal. What excuse do I have not to go?! The sandwiches are not going to be value sandwiches like at Al's where you can get huge sandwiches for like under 10 dollars. These sandwiches are like 13-15 dollars and are really heavy. I usually get the Cuban or Reuben with coleslaw. They make the Cuban fresh with a lot of meat, little to no vegetables, spicy chipotle mayo, and they toast it in a sandwich press. I tried getting fries on the side one time and was surprised at the serving size. You could probably split it 4 ways with the amount they give. I've also gotten the steak tip plate with rice and salad. The meat is really good, and I think they grill it. It semi makes me feel healthy with the salad, but definitely has a lot of fat. I think the rice is rice pilaf that is cooked in butter. It's a little out of the way for my morning commute to get breakfast, but I'm sure it is good. read more

We used Max's to cater a 125 person non profit event. Jake was simply incredible by being responsive and advising in planning every little detail, nothing was overlooked. It's hard to plan the menu when there are so many tastes and allergies. He was Uber helpful by suggesting and staging items to serve based upon the event program that I outlined. When it came to the food delivery and setup, the entire team was professional and frankly perfectionists, music to my ears. Everyone at the event raved about the food. We had a balance of hot heavy hors doevres (stuffed mushrooms, beef skewers, crab cakes, coconut shrimp, bacon scallops & veggie spring rolls), cold ones of prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, fruit kebabs, shrimp skewers and cheese platters. Max's mini sandwiches on brioche buns lent high quality for all. Jake even arranged for our custom cake and coffee service. He is truly full-service. I highly recommend Max's Deli, run by a nice family, they treated my event like I was family! read more

The four stars are mainly for their sweet potato fries, which were maybe $3.50 for a large boxful - those open topped boxes that fried clams are sometimes served in. They were light and crisp with natural sweet potato sweetness, and fried to order! In fact, that turned out to be the order item that made us wait, hungrily, within hearing distance of the cashier. Their Thursday special - Max & Cheese (nope, not a typo) - was served with your choice of green salad or Caesar. The romaine arrived nicely coated and crisp, but the shells were hardly warmer than room temperature and a bit above al dente. It wasn't the creamy sort of mac & cheese (ie. Panera), but it was tasty, and the portion was generous for one diner. Too bad though that it wasn't kept hot, or heated up for us. The side of garlic mashed ($1.95?) was creamy with garlic and natural potato flavor, but not much else. That was an okay rendition. When we asked for honey mustard, we received a generous little tub of honey dijon. Ketchup was available on the table in a squeeze bottle along with "Chinese Ketchup", napkins, and salt. We were there for lunch after 1pm, and the place was nonstop take-out the whole time we dined. Their bags of sandwich breads sitting on top of the counter looked enticing - especially what looked to be asiago ciabatta and the heavily flecked onion rolls... While I waited, I noticed that Max's advertised that they are there for your last minute catering needs. Just FYI. 4/2011 - $3.95 for the sweet potato fries. Yum! 7/2011 - still $3.95 for the crisp sweet potato fries, but this time the open box was fillled to overflowing. Nice! (4 stars) 8/2012 - the sweet potato fries (still $3.95) were rather limp yet meaty today. I prefer the crispy sort, unfortunately. But the Thursday special is now a shrimp scampi pasta which turned out to be al dente linguini with perhaps 10 good sized solid shrimp all covered with buttery olive oil and garlic. It came with a bowl of caesar salad, well dressed, and a nice slice of bread which I will save for later. They seem rather proud of the special - one of their staff ladies, a brunette, came by twice to ask how we liked it. There was a chill to the air conditioned air on this rather cool summer day. Wish I had thought to bring a jacket. 8/2012 still - the Max & Cheese special was too peppery and not what I normally think of when I think of mac & cheese. The pasta shells were fine, but the breadcrumb thickened mush wasn't particularly cheesey a concoction. The caesar salad was fine and crisp of leaf. The garlic mashed was decent - I liked it better than the main entree this time. (downgraded to 3 stars) 9/2012 - the office catered from here. White sheet cake was light and fluffy. Someone else vouched for their egg salad sandwich with bacon. I liked the large chunks of veggies in the healthy sandwich option. They provided a large variety of snack portion bags of chips, which was pretty impressive. read more

This place used to be so good, the food is just mediocre at best now and way overpriced. The cashier is rude and the staff act bothered when you order. They will also look you dead in the eye that they understand your order and then they will leave 1 of the 3 ingredients in your sandwich off your sandwich. I walked by this place every morning and afternoon for the first six months I lived in Boston. It seemed so cool, sitting below street level, with its gaping cave like entrance. However, I never thought to stop there until today (a year and a half later). It was well worth the stop. I got the New Yorker on Focatia bread, panini style. Home made bread, french dressing, two slices of cheese over a pile of roast beast that was dripplingly amazing. At 7 bucks, it wasn't the best deal in town, but it was a very good sandwich. Come for the great bread, stay for the cool seating. There's a plethora of tables and counters in a maze of rooms. The staff is super friendly, and the place is very clean. Strongly recommend getting a panini here. Stay away from the regular sandwiches (they're on store brought, plastic bagged sliced bread... meh). Probably one of the worst BLTs I've ever had today at lunch. I've gotten them before and they've been mediocre, but today's was so ridiculous I took a picture hoping to post it up. Sooo.. I ordered my BLT to go and walked 1 minute back to my office, opened it up, and it looked like a three year old threw a sandwich together and then stepped on it. (keep in mind, it's 11:45, before the city lunch rush) First off the bread was not toasted like I asked, and became soggy from the warm mayonnaise caked all over everywhere. L and T .... Wet see through pale green iceberg lettuce with only half of the sandwich having tomatoes on it. Now let's get to the meat... Well this bacon that they claim 'is top of the line bacon', is pre cooked and sits a stainless steal bucket, getting cold and hard, soaking in its own fat. Everyone knows when bacon gets cold it turns to plastic... Right?! I love bacon, but not that much bacon, I can't eat a whole pound of it for lunch and think I'll be productive for the rest of my day I ended up taking about half the bacon off and throwing it away, because I didn't want to have a heart attack. And the one thing that really put me over the edge was that the sandwich wasn't fully cut in half!! Come on people!! I'm the only person in line!!! Why do I have to go to my office and get a plastic knife and struggle to cut through this plastic bacon sandwich when u have this huge knife. That extra effort would have gone a long way with me. I will probably never go back there again, which is too bad because I really enjoy they're meatball subs, but seeing the care and quality put into this BLT was a huge turn off. read more

We went here for a sit down breakfast on a busy Monday morning. As visitors, we saw many locals and catering orders that seemed to be going in and out the door. Used a Groupon, and without a doubt would go back without one. We got two amazing omelettes, filled with a a variety of veggies, meats and cheese. A Groupon deal led me to Max's while in Boston. The prices are pretty jacked up even by Boston standards although the breakfast costs are very reasonable. Just a heads up that breakfast does end at 11am. 3 sandwiches and 3 12oz canned soft drinks was like $45. That is steep for what you get, which is a cafeteria style ordering line with a small cramped dining area that has some weird make shift office desk in the middle of it. The dining room area is in wicked need of a top to bottom cleaning. The "burnt tips" sandwich was really more of a chopped beef brisket BBQ, the Cuban sandwich was OK, not the most authentic representation but decent and the pulled pork was drowning in BBQ sauce. Portions are big but so is the price. They seem to have a following of sorts. It was a mix of regulars consisting of business and blue collar folks along with out of towner's drawn by the marketing and high profile location. Five Yelp Stars for breakfast at Max's Deli Cafe. I can't speak to lunch at Max's, or to Max's catering. I've been eating breakfast at Max's Deli Cafe for more than 20 years. Breakfast has consistently been excellent, fresh, the ingredients high quality, and cooked to order. Max's hot coffee (organic free trade) and breads are high quality; I can't comment about their muffins or cookies, as I don't eat them. Max's fresh fruit salad is excellent, the fruit is fresh, threre's nothing canned or forozen in it. Staff are kind, reasonably efficient. I miss seeing Mike, the owner, who I believe is now retired (I think Mike's son is now at the helm). I can't think of a better, reasonably priced, breakfast option, downtown, Max's looks to have a very busy lunchtime catering business. read more
