If you're looking for something mind-blowing, Susan's is likely not the place. There are neither bells nor whistles here. However, for a quick breakfast or lunch that doesn't waste precious lunch hour minutes, it hits just the right spot. Quality is on point for a deli. Their ingredients are fresh and high quality. There's no sad lettuce, and the grilled chicken breast came off the grill less than 15 minutes ago and was cooked perfectly, real grill marks included! No-frills as it is, a hot piece of chicken combined with crisp lettuce and fresh tomato, topped with buffalo and bleu hits just the spot! The only thing missing is croutons, but that's a matter of personal taste, not a complaint. The service is very speedy and will have you out the door with your food faster than a McDonald's drive through. As with many of the places in the area, the lunch rush can be something to be beheld! If you're at the counter, be sure you know what you want. You don't want to be *that guy* who holds up the line! The portion sizes are filling without stuffing you like a Thanksgiving chicken. More important than portion is value. In light of the area, and record inflation, their prices are very reasonable for what you get. They do not skimp on the proteins either, which is always hugely appreciated! Finally, believe it or not, I don't have any quibbles worth writing. I am not going to put them on blast for one minor assembly issue once. I might be a tough critic, but I try to be reasonable! So Ive been going here for what seems like forever. Im not a "regular" in that I go every week, but I frequent it enough that the staff recognizes me - although I don't blend I suppose ha ha. Anyhoo.... if you are looking for service with bells, whistles and all the pleasantries of a sit down restaurant, go elsewhere. If you are looking for a place that wont take up your whole lunch hour waiting in line and has consistent good food, good portions and fair prices (for downtown), then you got a new spot! Ive never gotten a sandwich here I didn't like - the turkey wrap, the hot pastrami on rye with mustard, the tuna on sub roll add onion and lettuce, falafel wrap... it goes on and on. all very good and stuffed high while being reasonably priced. I have seriously never gotten any order here done incorrectly (*please see ordering tip below), if you know what you're doing you're golden. They have everyday grill "stuff" ie. steak tips, chicken kabobs, chicken kabobs etc. they come as a plate with rice and salad or on salad or on rice, both with a pita. The also have a daily hot dish, like turkey and stuffing, or fish on Fridays, or American chop suey (ok this is the only thing I don't like its too salty for my liking and the pasta a bit over done. I like firmer pasta not squishy.) so the "American" style selection is pretty vast and you don't bore easily of it. Now then, the nitty gritty...Don't let the long line fool you, they run this place militantly, as you see in other reviews, but it works and frankly I don't care if they aren't chitchatting with me - they have money to make and I have lunch to eat in an hour. *TIP: look at the menu outside in the window, KNOW WHAT YOU WANT BEFORE YOU GET TO THE COUNTER, or you will regret it. not only do they get annoyed, evvvvvvvvvvvvveryone behind you will too. you place your full order the far left of the counter. Sandwich shop across from South Station. Good for some reasonably priced, delicious breakfast or lunch. Large and varied menu, including breakfast sandwiches, omlets, salads, and lunch sandwich combos. I came in at 6:30 on a weekday and it looks to be a stop for all the people working in nearby offices. They're very speedy at handling the morning rush, the line never seems to take more than 10 minutes for food, and they make it to go. There's also super friendly (very Mass-like) people working, and clean, well lit places to sit. read more

For 6.50 you can get, a sandwich, a Pita sandwich (hearty) or a pita with salad on it, with the meat on top. (Pita Stuffer). My theory is they have 4 ingredients and they have hit every combination and permutation possible. if they could sell you a pita on a roll, i think they would... for $6.50. They do have falafel which is one of the only differences in fare from a standard Deli. WARNING: they are excessive with the salad dressing, (ala soaked salad) ask for it on the side. WARNING 2.0: They charge you for anything. I had asked for grilled chicken, they offered to replace with buffalo chicken, i said sure. (50 cents) blue cheese? (50 cents) and normal cheese (50 cents) so that 6.50 cent sandwich balloons fast into $8.00 if you aren't careful. JUST SAY NO UPDATE: DO NOT GO HERE. this is hands down the biggest rip-off in the world. As I have put warnings in before, it has continued to get worse. I ordered off the menu, was given something else that cost more, THEN I asked about why PITA wasn't included as it said on the menu, (shown for salads and pita stuffers) and they said, oh it wasn't any of those. I've been in this place multiple times!!!! It's excellent!!!!! I still remember the first time I went in there. It was so welcoming and I felt so comfortable. Signage would be great. Menu didn't mention breakfast sandwiches, so I asked if I could get a sandwich and was told they don't have sandwiches until lunch. I repeated "you don't have breakfast sandwiches?", and was reprimanded that I said sandwiches and not breakfast sandwiches, and that of course they have breakfast sandwiches. Anyway, I ordered bacon egg cheese on white, paid, and ordered; then waited as people came and went with their food. After 10 minutes (they had forgotten my order), they called out "bacon and egg on English muffin", and handed me the bag. "On white", I said, as they unbagged, made toast, and slapped the same egg on toast. "You want hot sauce?" the lady asked as she handed me the bag. "No thanks", I replied, "I just want to get out of here." Bottom line is they don't have a point of sale system and rely on memory. Be ready to reorder and check your order after you get it. This place makes great breakfast food! They're also open during the afternoon for lunch, but since I don't work near here, I haven't tried that, but I'm sure it's good also. They make all the food on the grill, as opposed to microwaving it. Take note that they have a very efficient operation, so know what you want before you get into line, and that'll make things easier. Blown away. I was starving this morning, and I wanted real food, not cereal or oatmeal. Initially I was tempted to run down to Dunkies for a breakfast sandwich... but that's not exactly "real" food. I walk past Susan's all the time on my way from South Station to work, so I decided to run over there and check it out. Boy was I in for a surprise! First off, I was impressed that they offer most all of the typical breakfast foods, not just sandwiches. French toast, pancakes, omelets, etc. Second, I was impressed by the prices! $5.00 for a bacon and cheese omelet with home fries and toast. Whoa, I wanted that! Third, I was impressed by the friendly and prompt service. Fourth, and most importantly, I was impressed by the quality of the ingredients. You can see the cooking area - dozens of fresh eggs ready to be cracked, bacon sizzling, home fries roasting, and real cheese in blocks. This is NOT diner or Dunkies quality, it's actual food. It tastes homemade. I will absolutely positively be back here. There are so many things I want to try! read more

The people who work at this restaurant are robots. Robots with awesome food! First rule of robots is that you gotta stick to the commands that they understand. That means that there are some no-no's: ordering stuff that's not on the menu / weird (any) substitutions / not following the cafe line procedure. If you avoid those pitfalls, you should be fine. Also, don't worry about the steady, almost-angry expressions that the employees have. It's not their fault they were made that way! If you can get that out of your system, you will not be beaten for stepping out of line. The woman at the register is a freaking beast. She can run your card with one hand and change your friend's twenty with the other. She doesn't waste breath with anything other than one monotone thank-you per person. She has been working there every single time I've been there (at least 12 times). This is actually impressive to watch - makes you wonder why they can't clone her at other places. I don't know if this is Susan, but if it is - Sue, I'm a huge fan of what you do! Like any modern streamlined industrial machine, you can get in and out of this place in record time even with 20 people in line. Try it for yourself. This is hands down the most efficient food-serving establishment that I have ever seen. McDonald's should hire Susan as an outside consultant. If big Sue cracked into the ergonomics / process engineering market, the Leather District could put all of China out of business. More words to the wise on the food here. I would stick with the Greek-style stuff...Kebabs, Pita Stuffers, Dinner Plates, etc. - these are some hearty, fresh menu items. You can get a little creative on how you want to go about eating, but the food is a notch up from a lot of the other cuisine in the area. I have to give a shout out to Susan's Deli Of Course. I went here every day for a few years. I was such a regular that everyone there knew my name and would make my order as soon as I walked in. I would always get hummus on a pita with lettuce, tomato and american cheese. The hummus there was tangy and delicious and a perfect consistency. The customer service they showed me there was impeccable. One time I didn't have enough cash and they told me to just pay the next time I came in. Several times, the employees would joke with me about my love life or chat with me about how my job was going and what my plans were for the future. There was a real family feel to the place. God, I love Susan's. I need to go back as soon as possible for more hummus. read more

Based on the way Susan's treats their customers, I can no longer recommend going here. My initial review jokingly referred to the Seinfeld-like experience of ordering in this place - it's no longer a joke. All they need to do here is start serving soup! After coming here quite a few times over the past year or two, I have noticed both the quality of food and the treatment of customers get worse and worse. A little over a week ago, I came here with a few coworkers. I grabbed my usual chicken kabob plate with rice and salad. My coworker ordered the same. While it was in 'phase two' of preparation (after ordering, in the salad section) he asked for feta on the salad. This somehow got misconstrued into feta on the salad and Russian dressing (as opposed the usual Italian). Here's where things get crazy. My coworker notices the mistake and promptly mentions it to the lady behind the counter. Every employee in the food prep line must have rolled their eyes at the same time. They took his lunch, threw it away, and began making a new one (even though he insisted just taking the dressing off and changing to Italian would have been fine). The response he got from the lady behind the counter was the kicker: "You should have told the first person behind the counter if you wanted to make any changes to your order". She must have told him three separate times. What kind of place chastises their customers for NOT ORDERING CORRECTLY when there is no correct or defined procedure!? Apparently there are super-secret non-posted rules here on how to order that some people telepathically pick up before ordering. I guess whatever machine they use to send out these rules was broken. The chicken kabobs are dry, the salad is wilted, the rice pilaf is nothing special. Several times I have found a hair in my meal. I can forgive plenty of things, but seeing how they treat other people with so much disregard here - blaming their customers for a mix-up rather than rectifying the situation with a smile on their face! Forget it, go to Al's down the street. For around the same price, you get better tasting chicken kabobs, better rice pilaf, better salad, and a roll. The sandwiches here are your basic, no-frills but lots o meat deli sandwiches. They come standard with russian dressing & dark rye for most, but you can ask for different bread. Price isn't super cheap ($6.50) but it's a big hearty sandwich. The menu has lots of other items as well, a few entrees and even a breakfast menu. Next time you're stuck at South Station, why not cross the street & grab something here and thankfully avoid the food court? read more

I work down the street and go here almost every day for lunch. Their sandwiches are monstrous and delicious. My favorite is The Pilgrim - turkey breast, coleslaw, thousand island dressing, tomatoes and onions. The jewel in the crown is the chicken kabob, rice and salad plate. I try to make lunch my main meal of the day and this definitely does the trick. Plus, it's yummy. The downside is that the chicken is dry. As for the service -- yeah, these people are not the friendliest staff in the world. Know your order before you dare approach the counter. I go to Susan's alot because it's near my office. Food is solid, not mindblowingly good, but not bad ... fairly middle of the road. I go because the portions are good, and if you order right, not too too crazy in price. Chicken kebab, rice and salad is everyone's standard order, which is good, but a little pricey. My move, though, is a greek or garden salad (the lettuce just seems fresher) with either a chicken kebab, chicken salad scoop or tuna salad scoop - $7. You also get a pita (whereas with the chicken, rice and salad - the pita is extra $$) One downside to Susans is that the chicken be dry. But, the Italian dressing (which seems homemade) is really good - they slather it on, so I prefer it on the side. Yes, lines can be long, but don't let that deter you ... the staff is not overly friendly - but they're efficient and get you in and out in a jiff. The woman behind the counter could only be described as 'surly'. No smile, no greeting, no thank you, just 'what do you want?'
