Excellent large cannolis, not to sweet fresh tasting shell price was decent for Downtown Boston

Call it a tourist trap if you want, but I loved Mike's Pastry! I visited on a Friday afternoon, and was surprised it wasn't super full. There was a line, but it moved quickly - we waited about 10 minutes total. We tried several things: pistachio, limoncello, pecan caramel cannoli and the pecan caramel cheesecake. I didn't even think I liked cannoli at all based on a previous experience, but WOW - these changed my perspective. They were sweet without being overwhelming. The cheesecake was delicious as well. Heads up, as other reviews have mentioned, it's cash only. Luckily, my mom is old school and always carries cash with her. Mike's vs Modern is to cannoli's what Pat's and Geno's is to cheesesteaks in Philly. We got here on a Thursday around 2pm and we walked right up to the counter. The lady friend wasn't ready since she had heard there would be a long line before we arrived. The lady at the counter was operating as if they were really busy hurrying us along. We ordered a Florentine with Espresso filling and a traditional cannoli from the Soup Nazi then took them to the park to eat. I guess she would be a Cannoli Fascist in this example...anyway back on track. The Florentine is not for me. Too dense and too sweet since it's a rolled out almond cookie made into the shell. The espresso filling was good despite me not being a coffee fan. The traditional rolled in chocolate chips is where it's at! Perfect texture, not too sweet but sweet enough. Absolutely delicious. My review is not on the cannolis as I don't like cannoli and didn't get any here. So maybe the cannolis are the way to go at Mike's. During my visit, there was only a short line. I perused all the offerings behind the case and couldn't find anything that called my name. Everything looked dry and unappetizing TBH. There were some interesting things that I have never seen before like an angry Easter Lamb (large for $25, small for $15). The marzipan fruit looks super cute, but not something I would want to eat. My friend purchased a lemon bar and a raspberry stick. She offered me some and I tried both. I didn't like either one. The pastry dough was dry and the filling was very artificial tasting. Being a tourist visit Boston one thing I kept seeing on a lot of travel vlogs was that you had to come to the north end to get a cannoli. There's two locations that start with an M that everyone should try, Mikes and ..... the other one is in my next review. This being my first time ever having a cannoli the winner to me is Mike's. Their cannoli cost a little more than the other shop, but mikes was a little bigger and i liked that Mikes was a little sweeter. But overall you can lose with either both are worth trying. I didn't notice Mikes was a little busier, but the line went pretty quick I think it only took me maybe 5 minutes to be in and out with the line being at the edge of the door. read more

Last time I was in town, it was on a weekend and the line stretched out the door and down the sidewalk to get into this bakery. Since I don't ride the FOMO train I passed. Today I walked in with only one customer in front of me, that's the way I like it! I got a pistachio cannoli to-go and "holy cannoli" it was very good! Definitely a tourist trap sort of place but I think Mikes deserves all the hype they get! If you don't want to wait inside as I hear it can be quite packed you can order delivery which is what I did. I tried the whoopie pie and the neopalitan. The whoopie pie is a 5/5. I had a best friend when I was a kid whose family was from Maine. Whoopie pies are a huge thing for them and her grandma who lived next door would make them for us as kids. Mikes whoopie pie is spot on and reminded me of what I had when I was a kid. Great nostalgia. The neopalitan was the first dessert my now partner gifted me when he worked at a bakery almost 10 years ago. I haven't had one like it in a long time. This one was quite good. Not as good as the one I had years ago but close. Overall the desserts are fabulous and there is a wide array so you are sure to find something you like. And their packaging is gorgeous. From its popular (and abundant number of cannolis) to their Boston creme pies to their other delicious pastries, Mike's Pastry is great for a sweet treat. I got their Boston cream pie here (my first time trying one) and I thought it was great. I was worried it would be too indulgent and overly sweet but it was perfect. We stopped by Mike's Pastry in the North End, and it was absolutely worth the visit. We ordered the crème brûlée, pistachio cannoli, and a slice of carrot cake. While everything was good, the crème brûlée was hands down our favorite pastry here. It was incredibly flavorful, perfectly creamy, and beautifully balanced--easily the standout of the visit. It's been 18 years since my lady cannoli from mikes and it's exactly as I remembered except now all of the flavors are epic!!!!!! The original is definitely the best. That ricotta is just mmmmmmm so good. Next fave was the espresso. I'm a big coffee everything kind of gal so this definitely exceeded all expectations. I was on vacation in Boston, and after seeing over 10 videos about things you can't miss when visiting Boston I had to try Mike's. After we had a big dinner down the street at Nico's, we saw a line out the door, and knew we had to stop. The line went quickly and me and my friend ordered two cannolis. One chocolate chip and one mint and chip. The bummer about our cannolis is that we were too full to eat them immediately and we waited to have them for breakfast the next day. By that time, they had softened substantially. I will say that the taste was great, but we were expecting there to still be a crunch. I also got a fig cookie and it was really good. I tried to go on a cannoli tasting tour, but I didn't have enough stomach room by the time I got to here. This place is very large, busy, and efficient. Wherever you see the hanging spheres, it's a line with a staff member to help you. It took my friend and I a bit to figure it out. They take orders and wrap the to go boxes well (securely, efficiently, and conveniently). Out of the three cannoli places I visited (Mike's, Modern Pastry, and Bova's) they definitely have the largest variety of filling options...and desserts in overall. Instead of the cannolis, my friend and I ordered a Tiramisu (my friend had a craving) and Boston Crème Pie (when in Boston) to go. It's cash only and not really anywhere you can sit down to eat. It's a hustle and bustle type of environment with no frills. Staff were courteous. After opening up the box, we were kind of disappointed. The Tiramisu was not a traditional one like my friend was hoping for and the Boston Crème Pie was just okay. It's definitely a tourist destination, but I don't think I would revisit it. read more

Now this is a proper cannoli! As many claim here they are the best in town and live up to the hype. The shell had a terrific crispy crunch and the traditional filling was creamy and tasty. We also had a pistachio cannoli and made sure to try a few lobster tails. Both also very good. Been around since 1946 and is a fave of locals and visitors to the area. We thought Mike's was a bit better than Modern but you can't really go wrong with either one when visiting the North End. read more

The iconic Mike's pastry was a must stop on our trip to Boston. The line did seem long down the block and it was a cold day, but I think we waited around 30 minutes which isn't the worst, but given the chaotic nature of the inside where no one knows what is going on it felt very overwhelming. If you are trying to get some pastries for your family, I really recommend just having one person go inside the store and ordering for everyone that is waiting outside. Once you get to the front after scrambling through people who you are are not sure if they are in a line or not, the service is quick and attentive and accurate. We grabbed our cannolis and ran out of there. We got a chocolate chip cannoli , Dubai chocolate flavor, and pumpkin pie flavor. The Dubi chocolate one was completely dipped in chocolate, and I thought that that was too much I would've preferred to enjoy the actual shell of the cannoli, but I really enjoyed the pistachio flavor. My favorite one overall was the classic chocolate chip cannoli that was just a classic cannoli with mini chocolate chips pushed in on the outside. Is this a little overhyped? Maybe... definitely on the more expensive end for pastries but definitely a city classic for a reason. I tried 4 different cannolis on my trip here and the shell her was definitely the freshest and crispest without tasting stale or getting soggy over time. We decided to check it out and whoa the lines were long. Literally out the store, down the street. Thankfully, the line does move pretty fast and we only waited about 15 min. I'm actually glad we had to wait in line because neither my husband nor I carry cash and Mike's is a cash only establishment. There's a very large selection here and I'm glad that they still have such a large selection even late at night, like when we came after dinner. To be wholly honest, I don't think anything I had was that good. I especially did not like the lobster tail, which sadly is my favorite thing. I was so excited to have my husband try it because he didn't get a chance when we went to NYC a few years ago. He looked at me crazy for saying it was my favorite pastry (I let him try it first) and then I tried it and was super underwhelmed. It was dry but also soggy, with way too thick layers and literally no flavor. We didn't even try the chocolate one because we didn't like the regular. The ricotta pie was just ok, I took 3 bites and threw it out. The whoopie pie was too sweet and extra soggy. Super disappointed, especially given how expensive these pastries are. However, the rating is still high for those cannoli. No, they are not better than NY (sorry Boston, NY wins this one) and they aren't the best I've ever had but they were solid and the vast variety of flavors was impressive. When we first arrived, we saw a gigantic linen out the door and were initially intimidated, but learned pretty quickly that the line moved pretty quickly. For reference, we maybe waited 25-30 minutes. Trust me, it was worth the wait! Make sure you bring cash otherwise you will be turned away. Luckily there are plenty of atms nearby. While your waiting, you can look at their large menu boards and decide what you want. Make sure that by the time you get to the counter that you're ready to order as things move fast here. We ordered an amaretto cannoli, chocolate covered lobster tail and a Boston cream puff. All three were absolutely incredible and were gobbled up so fast. Worth the hype! Came on a raining morning with no line which was awesome since they usually have a long line outside the door. Ordered half a dozen cannoli from the woman who made my day. She was no nonsense and gave me solid recommendation. I ordered the chocolate chip, hazelnut, limoncello, oreo, pistachio, and the amaretto cannoli. AMAZING! Pretty famous for their Cannolis and it didn't disappoint with respect to that. We tried the most basic one - Ricotta cannoli - and it was probably the second best I've had (best so far is Alati in Montreal) till date. Quite fresh and tasty. The crust was quite thin, which is good. Having said that, the Boston Cream Pie was a bit let down. While it was great on the surface, the middle area was frozen and didn't leave a good taste. Ambiance in the store is something amazing. Very crowded but was being managed in an orderly manner. The cashier in your queue will only entertain one customer at a time, so there is no confusion as to who is waiting to pick up or yet to order. It's all cash - so make sure you have the cash enough for your order. Definitely to be tried but perhaps don't buy in to the hype. read more

4.5 stars Mike's Pastry had always been one of my favorite places to visit when I was in Boston, and I had planned to stop there on my recent trip as well. Before I made it there, I kept passing other folks carrying those iconic white boxes with blue writing, and it was as if the bakery would taunt me until I finally went. I headed over to the North End, fully prepared to join the typical, lengthy line leading down the block from the pastry shop. However, Saturday around 11:00 am was apparently an ideal time to go, as we only had to wait on a very brief queue. When we finally made it to the counter, the woman that helped us was a complete doll! I was shocked that she was able to remain so friendly when she was being swarmed by tourists, but clearly she was experienced with patience. Others might opt for the famed, multi-flavored cannolis, but I ordered my favorite of Mike's pastries - the brownie. The rich, fudgy square was topped with a thick layer of chocolate frosting, making it pure decadence. I also sampled the Champagne Cookies, which were made from white and pink dough and had been rolled in sprinkles around the edges. I liked that they were thickly sliced, so that they had some texture, but they were very lemony, which I had not expected, since they looked more like shortbread or butter cookies. A visit to Mike's Pastry might involve standing in line and shelling out a good deal of cash for your treats (credit cards not accepted), but a bite of their heavenly desserts, especially the brownies, made that all worth it! read more
