The hype holds at Levain, truly amazing cookies, and I say this as someone who leans more towards crispy/crunchy cookies. The smell is intoxicating when you first enter. The chocolate chip walnut and coconut caramel were both very good - not too dense or airy, tender crumb, and melty chocolate. I've thought about these cookies ever since I've had them in NY, so imagine my surprise to find a location here! I immediately started telling my friend how good it was and that we should go. Her sweet tooth really came through because she was sold right away. When we walked in, there already was a line in the store. After hearing great things about Levain, we stopped in for a quick visit tonight after dinner. Our service was awesome. Our server was extremely patient with us as we took a long time picking out exactly what we wanted, and once we were ready, she was there ready for us with a smile. Sounds like a little thing, but it took away all that awkwardness you can feel when staring at cookies for way too long. The shop itself is really cool inside. Love the small seating area out front, perfect for people watching on Newbury. And finally- the cookies themselves were all great. We got a Chocolate Chip Walnut, Two Chip Chocolate Chip, and a Raspberry Pistachio. All were fresh, tasty, and certainly worth the trip. First time here and decided to order a hot mocha latte. I got it with skim milk and asked for extra mocha. Even with the extra mocha it was a bit hard to taste the flavor at first. The more it sat, the more I was able to taste it. And the mocha they use doesn't seem to be very chocolatey which I'm not a fan of. It's more on the bland side. Maybe it would be better iced but since it's cold outside I wanted something hot. The girl who took my order and made my latte was very nice and very kind. She had a really good vibe coming off her which I love. Five stars for her! So the mocha gets 3 stars, the girl who helped me gets five stars. I may get a cookie to go but haven't decided if I wanna spend $5.75 plus tax on a cookie. The mocha was $5.25 plus tax alone. And the cookies really aren't as big as people say they are. They do look good but I'm not sure if I wanna spend that much on a single cookie. Maybe I'll come back another day. Edit to say I did go back for a cookie. Because I can't click my heels and end up in NYC, where Levain hails from, wherever I visit any city and learn that they have a Levain, I immediately add it to my trip itinerary. And in Boston, I did just that. Levain is perfect and in my selfish definition, the BEST chocolate chip walnut cookie out there. We managed to visit twice to get our fix. Altogether we ordered the Cookie Milk Latte, an Iced Chai Latte, 1 Black Iced Tea, Raspberry Pistachio cookies, the OG Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie and the vegan version. The cookies here make me drool every time. They are a mound. The chewiest pocket of cookie perfectly baked. Every bite feels like heaven. The raspberry pistachio was a fun summery add, it tasted berry-good with creaminess from the pistachio. Service is quick, line up and someone will help you; everything moves pretty smoothly. Most importantly, none of them had the greasiness of the first few visits. -- Two Chip Chocolate Chip Cookie: Believe it or not, there is such a thing as too much chocolate. I wanted to taste the dough too, but the gooey chocolatey meltiness dominated. Once cooled, the dough flavor was more discernable and nicely buttery. Good cookie, but gimme 20% fewer chips and I'll give you 40% more love. -- Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie: I was bracing myself for chocolate overload, but this was actually more balanced than the chocolate chip. This one had more of a brownie flavor to the base, with little extra bursts of chocolate from the chips. Excellent. -- Oatmeal Raisin Cookie: The unsung hero. Even though I didn't get much oatmeal flavor, still a delicious base, and the raisins were soft and moderately sweet. A good one to have with coffee and probably my favorite of the bunch. Friendly staff. No toilet. Stool seating for four, with a few tables outside. If you're into cookies, this is a must-visit, and don't worry about the price. The service was very kind and patient with the group, despite us having a complicated order with specific combinations in each box. This was during World Cup season, so they kindly labeled each box on themed tape that was super cute! I got the original cookie (delicious) with vanilla ice cream. You didn't have a choice on the flavor, which was honestly a bummer because I would've gotten chocolate. Oh well. It was still very delicious though. They got it to me fast, the line wasn't long when I got there, although it started to fill in as I was leaving. After watching a candlelight show in the area on a Friday night, my family and I decided to feed our sweet tooth. I was surprised they closed late (10 pm) since it is a bakery. The line was out the door, but we were out the door in about 5 minutes so it goes by quick. They have the cookies on display which helps put a picture to a flavor. We wanted to share a cookie since we were still full from dinner and the only flavor we could decide on was dark chocolate peanut butter chip (for the record, I wanted the carrot cake one). The color of the cookie was a rich dark brown with little chunks of caramel colored peanut butter chips. Even though they aren't warm, the outside is crispy and the inside is soft which makes them fantastic. The texture is almost like that of a chewy brownie + if ice cream were room temperature mixed - its hard to describe. All that to say it was delicious and I would definitely try other flavors. Each cookie is about $5-7 which is not too bad for a filling dessert item. They sell merchandise and on one of the walls they have a mural of the neighboring streets. I nearly had whiplash when walking down Newberry Street and seeing Levain Bakery. I know them from NYC and this is my sister's favorite east coast bakery (like she has shipped their cookies to Milwaukee). I stopped in for a chocolate chip walnut cookie on day 1 in Boston and stopped back in this morning prior to going to the airport to get some as a thank you to my sister for watching our cat. We got a variety including their seasonal lemon cookie. The cookies are large, easily shareable or save the half for yourself later. The packaging of our four pack was beautiful. Interestingly enough, TSA did have me open the box of cookies and looked through them before allowing me to leave with them. That was a first!
