I first tried Far Out at the Timeout Market near Fenway and was instantly obsessed with their ice cream. My favorites are the strawberry graham cracker and mango matcha. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this location in Brookline that has seating. It was quite busy when I stopped by on a Wednesday night and it took us a few minutes to find a seat. They also have free self serve water.
I had never been to this Far Out Ice Cream location. I had been once to the location in Time Out Market a few years ago, but they stopped offering the vegan base, so I was not able to get it since. I recently was nearby this location on a hot summer evening, and decided to stop in to finally try it out again. Summer and ice cream is a good pair. Going inside, you order by yourself on kiosks, not at the counter. There are signs to guide you to the iPads to order, but if it's crowded inside, this isn't the most intuitive thing for a newcomer. The ordering kiosks are practically the furthest location from the entrance. It was crowded when I went, but mostly with people eating their ice cream or waiting for an order so once I found the kiosk, I was able to order pretty quickly. Even with a bunch of people hanging out on a summer night, I was impressed that my order was ready pretty quickly (less than 5 minutes from placing the order). I decided to get the Vegan Kookaberry (vegan vanilla base) with blueberry and mango New Zealand style. It was good and serving was acceptable, but mine started to melt pretty quickly and was dripping over the side of my cup (about 5 minutes after getting it). Also, it is on the pricier side for ice cream, even without adding on things like toppings. For any non-dairy folks, you have to pay extra for the vegan substitution, which I genuinely find annoying. I do like that each order is made on the spot and you can customize flavors from time to time. I would go back again to try other options, but I personally wouldn't go out of my way for it.
I actually came here two days in a row! The first day was with my BF and my sister. They both got the pre-made mixes and I decided to go for a dirty soda. The strawberry grahamcake one was the best, but I felt like the mango sticky rice was a little low on flavor and then the dirty soda (the root beer float) was extremely sweet--a little overpowering. Luckily I went back with some friends the next day, so I was able to give this another try. I got the raspberri mudslide in a kiddie size. This was much better. I liked that it was like a raspberry chip soft serve with some chocolate drizzle. I agree with some of the other commenters that the touch screen ordering is a bit overwhelming, because there are so many options and abbreviations on the menu. I also think it creates a bit of a bottleneck with ordering because we were spending so much time scrolling through the touch screen and trying to figure out what our choices were and what we should get. Overall, I wasn't super wowed by the ice cream or the experience. It is refreshing, and if you like fruit ice creams/fro yo vibes, this might be great for you. But it was pretty expensive and some of the orders we got were misses.
Oh my god, some of the best and most unique desserts I've ever had! The new zealand style concept is so cool! I love how customizable it is, and it feels like you can't go wrong with any combo because everything just tastes so fresh. This is seriously a dessert you can't get enough of because it's perfectly sweet while still being light and rejuvenating! The service is kind and quick and the vibes are upbeat and fun! On top of that, the ice cream is stretchyyyy, what more could you want?
Unique ice cream store with the cutest mascot and decor! Loved the orange and white theme. You order from a kiosk, and your ice cream is served super quickly! They specialize in frozen yogurt-esque ice cream that it made with your choice of fruit, and either a vanilla or chocolate base. They dump everything into a cone that then squishes the flavors together and creates a soft serve. My friend got the kookaberry kids size, which clearly had remnants of berries inside and tasted incredibly refreshing with no heaviness. I got the Hokey Pokey kids size, which is a flavor from New Zealand with vanilla ice cream mixed with honeycomb toffee. Quite delicious and unique - not too sweet! Def heavier than the kookaberry. Prob would wanna try vanilla with mango next time for a more refreshing flavor.
One of my favorite ice cream places of all time. The ice cream is somehow refreshing and creamy and the same time, and truly not too sweet. So many fun flavor combos! The inside is so cute and service is very quick.
Good New Zealand style soft serve ice-cream blended with fruit and other toppings of your choice. Can be a bit too sweet but depends on your preference. Interior is clean and you order at the kiosk. Waffle cone is fresh.
a unique spot for new Zealand ice cream that fans of fruity ice cream will love! Far out is a trendy and casual spot where you customize your order at an iPad and offers a few seating options in and outside. I made my own combination with a vanilla base, mango chopped and blended in (blending on ingredients is their staple), and topped with condensed milk. It definitely was refreshing and felt lighter than ice cream but creamier than froyo. A cool option to mix up your sweet treat. It was however a little pricey. Service was fine nothing special.
The first time I had far out was actually at time out market in fenway. It was so good, I had to check out their original location in MA! To my expectations, this store is even better than imagined. Staff is friendly, self service kiosks are easy to use, store is clean and inviting, prepacked pints can be picked up in the back, and froyo is delicious. I really like their raspberry w/ chocolate flakes but thus time I got strawberry w/ graham cracker dust and it tasted like cheesecake! Tangy, creamy, and not too sweet. Highly recommend!
Highly recommend ordering for pickup, otherwise be prepared to wait. I got the kookaberry while my partner got the strawberry topped with crushed graham crackers. I enjoyed the kookaberry, similar to how I make a smoothie. My partner preferred mine too. I enjoy that you can customize whether you want a vanilla or chocolate base and what to top it with. Because it's so customized, they make each to order so it takes a while. They call out orders by name instead of number so you really can't tell when you'd be coming up unfortunately.
What a fun spot! Super cool flavor combos, ice cream is delicious and flavorful. I got a lavender latte as well, which was delicious. Would definitely come back.
We got the kookaberry with a vanilla base and chocolate base, to compare. The vanilla emphasized the berry flavors (wasn't prominent in the background) while the chocolate flavor was a bit stronger (and better imo!) We went on a Wednesday night and the wait was very long- maybe 10 min between ordering through the kiosk and receiving our ice creams. Granted there were only 2 people behind the counter and it was very busy, but this place is much slower than your typical ice cream shop. This was my first time here and I intentionally chose a basic flavor combo to try first- I'd return to try other funkier combinations for sure!

Went to the Coolidge Corner Theatre tonight and need a post movie snack. A short walk away was a fun looking place called Far Out Ice Cream. Easy to find on-street parking and sit-down eating inside and out. The place is unique in that you pick from a list of creams, add goodies of your choosing and then toppings. Or, you can just select a few specials. The servers pull the ingredients together and they are mixed in an auger and emptied into a cup, cone or both. The outcome is magical! I had a special from their list called strawberry gram cracker and my wife had the toasty sunrise. The third in our party went rogue and made a concoction of her own. All three were excellent! Since the place was hopping, we walked a block and had our ice cream on a bench. Guilt only set in when we noticed the business we were sitting in front of... Give this place a try! read more

SO GOOD! Love the process of this ice cream plus it's really tasty. A bit expensive but worth it for a special treat. Only down side is it takes kinda a long time to make each ice cream so if there's a long line then expect a pretty long wait. Would definitely return! read more
I would choose soft serve over scooped ice cream any day but unfortunately I don't think this spot is for me. I got a kiddie-sized ice cream with their chocolate base, raspberries, and cookies and creme blended in. The ice cream tasted... healthy. It wasn't super sweet (probably due to the tartness from the fruit) but also wasn't very creamy. I barely tasted the cookies and creme which was disappointing because you have to pay extra for mix-ins. The blended fruit added some texture to the ice cream so it was a little grainy. I imagine that some of the softer fruits (banana, mango) would have a smoother texture. As others have mentioned, if they don't clean the cup before they blend your ice cream, then you will get a little bit of whatever the person before you had. read more

Interesting soft serve dessert! The place was super.busy when we went on a weeknight after dinner so there wasn't a ton of space and the wait was a little long, however the staff were doing their best and we got our orders within a few minutes. They have you order on a kiosk with a few flavor options that are mixed in with the toppings you choose, making a very well blended dessert. The consistency was a bit better than most soft serve I think and pretty unique. I enjoyed the flavors they had and the end product was pretty delicious. The only con here I think was the price - I'd much prefer a larger portion for less quality ice cream honestly so the tiny portion for the almost $10 was a little disappointing. For dessert though, I'd probably return albeit not super often, but the experience was pretty positive and I enjoyed my time! read more

Far Out Ice Cream is such a fun and tasty addition to the Brookline area! When they first opened, the line would be out the door! But now, it's definitely chilled down a bit and the wait times are much faster and manageable. You can order online or go in person and order using a tablet. They make their ice cream using fresh fruit right in front of you and you can customize what goes in it; starting from the dairy bases to the fruits and toppings. I really like their Kookaberry (which is a fruit mix) with a vanilla ice cream base! The ice cream itself is really creamy and tastes delicious. They give you a lot, even if you order a small. I love the fact you can watch them make your ice cream as well using their machines. They also have coffee which is really cool too, I'm sure it's really tasty as well! Overall, Far Out is a cute little ice cream shop. There's some indoor seating, but not a lot. There's also two tables outside. I can't wait to try their other flavors and make different combinations! read more

My bff and I stopped in after a lovely walk nearby. I ordered the mango drizzled with honey in a waffle cone. It was divine. read more
The staff is always friendly. And there is always a rotation of interesting flavors. For hot and humid nights this place is my go to as the ice cream is very light and refreshing with the fruit based flavors. Fair prices too My favorite is the banana or the raspberry icecream read more
Huge line out the door Friday night! This place is really cool they have some kind of machine where they put in fruits and it mixes everything in I assume. The wait was pretty fast 15-20 minutes and ordering is really easy via kiosk machines. I ordered the vanilla with blueberry and mango!I really liked how it wasn't so sweet! It had little to no sugar, but it was sooo delicious! Please if you are in the area you gotta give them a try! read more
Okay I didn't really get why there was a line, I thought Far Out was going to be regular ice cream yknow? However, I really enjoyed the ice cream blended with fruit. It tasted so refreshing! You can add a number of fruits as well so the combinations are endless. I felt lied to cause i thought kookaberry was something cool but it's just strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry LMAO. read more

We were greeted right when we walked in. We explained we'd never been and the person behind the counter proceeded to tell us all about the process and available products. You order via a kiosk but they are there to answer questions. HOORAY FOR DAIRY FREE OPTIONS! That actually are quite good. I ordered the rasperri mudslide dairy free, I could've definitely got a kid size because I don't do a lot of ice cream and it's a pretty good portion size. It was pretty tasty. They use real fruit so there will be seeds present. Stop in, it's a cute little shop. read more

The sheer smell of waffle cone makes you float inside. We got the kookaberry ice cream which was more tart that I thought it would be, but I guess that makes sense since it's raspberry. They added orange sprinkles and a pretty tall waffle cone. It's interesting that it's a coffee bar split ice cream place, and you have to have a foundation of frozen yogurt or vanilla or chocolate or nondairy. I think it's definitely a simple spot. I wasn't over the moon as I like creamier options. I like that they open the window, and you can smell the cones baking from down the street. I haven't tried the coffee, but I like how they used orange sprinkles simply for the aesthetic read more
exciting vegan and dairy free options, and a cool concept for sure! was a little disappointed by the lack of flavor from the fruit in mine - tasted slightly like strawberries, not much like banana. the coconut pieces were blended up perfectly! read more

This place is relatively new on Harvard and if you have not had a chance to check it out yet, I would highly recommend. All their ice cream is flavored by combining it with fruit. You can choose up to 3 different fruit flavors and one topping, is included in the price. I had gotten the vanilla ice cream base and it was very creamy. My boyfriend had the frozen yogurt base which made it more fruity. Overall a really cool concept and everyone there was so nice and explain the process to you if you've never been. read more
Far out is one of my favorite places for ice cream!! It makes me feel somewhat healthy that the ice cream is blended with fruit lol. It tastes so fresh!!! I love doing banana paired with another fruit bc the banana makes it a little more creamier. The staff is always super nice and smiling!! The shop is so inviting and has their kookaburra logo hidden all over who is adorable!! Highly recommend trying :) read more

Loved the fresh berry flavor in the Kookaberry, which was a refreshing treat for a warm summer evening! The ice cream itself is slightly tangy, with a flavor and texture almost like frozen Greek yogurt. I definitely want to return to try some of the other flavor combinations! Bonus points to the staff who were exclusively playing "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" read more

I was extremely excited a new ice cream shop was opening up in the area! Far out is a New Zealand style ice cream shop which are known for real fruit ice cream! How you order is that you choose a Base (Vanilla, Chocolate, Dairy Free Vanilla, or Dairy Free Chocolate), Fruit (Blueberry, Raspberry, Strawberry, Mango, Pineapple, Banana, Kookaberry, the fruit of the month), and type of vessel (cup or waffle cone), and then toppings (chocolate flakes, sprinkles, toasted coconut flakes, and syrups). We got the vanilla base with pineapple with toasted coconut flakes in a cup with a waffle cone on top and a vanilla base with Kookaberry (blend of different berries) on a waffle cone! The ice cream and cones were made fresh and delicious! I love that there is dairy free options! There are only 2 machines so expect a wait since they make custom order for each customers. Also, the ice cream is a little pricey but the quality of the ice cream and fruits were amazing! read more

Thanks so much, Bryson!!!!!! We're so glad to be a go-to spot, and…
Very fun place to stop in for dessert! I was excited to check out the unique way that they create the ice cream. They have a special New Zealand ice cream machine that mixes the ice cream with fruits and other toppings. It's so well mixed it basically becomes a new ice cream flavor. Highly recommend their most popular flavor- kookaberry- which is a mix of different berries. Add some chocolate shavings coconut and other toppings to give the ice cream a satisfying little bit of a crunch. My bf made a chocolate banana ice cream that he really enjoyed- but he said he liked my flavor even better! read more
Love the concept of this ice cream spot - you can choose your base, flavorings, and toppings! Or you can trust the experts at Far Out and get their signature flavors. We enjoyed ours - I personally found the New & Exciting Matcha with Apricot (Vanilla ice cream) to be the best. read more

Fun and cute spot for ice cream! I got the signature kookaberry with vanilla base, the flavors were bright and you could taste the tanginess of the berries. I prefer sweet to sour so it wasn't my favorite, but the strawberry grahamcake was delicious. Line moves quickly, easy to order yourself on a tablet. Would like to come back to try all of the Enzy's favorites. read more

What We Ate: Raspberry Mudslide (chocolate ice cream, raspberries, chocolate chunks and chocolate drizzle, cup and Cone (Dairy), $10 Would Recommend? No "New Zealand-style" ice cream = ice cream mixed with frozen fruit of your choice to create fruit-infused soft serve. Additional choice for toppings. Order at the counter. Seating with tables inside and outside. Good idea, but didn't quite pull it off. Fruit was so blended in, you couldn't tell it was there. Makes for expensive soft serve. Not bad taste wise, but bad value. read more

First time visiting and definitely coming back! My partner and I got a kookaberry ice cream on a kiddie cup and toastie sunrise in a waffle cone - TASTE: 5/5 - I don't usually get fruit-based ice cream but wanted to try the signature kookaberry, which was really satisfying! What blew us away though was the toastie sunrise. It was perfectly balanced, with the strawberry and banana, toasted coconut, and amazing honey drizzle. Looking forward to trying all of "Enzy's Favorites!" TEXTURE: 4/5 - my kookaberry had bits of berries in it, and we liked the crunch of the waffle cone PRICE: 4/5 - our total came to $16, which we deemed worth it lol SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - generous and tall portions, and there was a lot of honey drizzle! SERVICE: 4/5 - we walked in at 6:15pm on a Sunday and there were a handful of people in line. We liked that you can order on a tablet. Waited approx. 5min for our ice cream to be ready, while observing how the ice cream machine worked ATMOSPHERE: 5/5 - narrow, bright space w fun decor and colors! PARKING: 4/5 - parked a block away on Harvard St read more
