I first tried Far Out at the Timeout Market near Fenway and was instantly obsessed with their ice cream. My favorites are the strawberry graham cracker and mango matcha. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this location in Brookline that has seating. It was quite busy when I stopped by on a Wednesday night and it took us a few minutes to find a seat. They also have free self serve water.
I had never been to this Far Out Ice Cream location. I had been once to the location in Time Out Market a few years ago, but they stopped offering the vegan base, so I was not able to get it since. I recently was nearby this location on a hot summer evening, and decided to stop in to finally try it out again. Summer and ice cream is a good pair. Going inside, you order by yourself on kiosks, not at the counter. There are signs to guide you to the iPads to order, but if it's crowded inside, this isn't the most intuitive thing for a newcomer. The ordering kiosks are practically the furthest location from the entrance. It was crowded when I went, but mostly with people eating their ice cream or waiting for an order so once I found the kiosk, I was able to order pretty quickly. Even with a bunch of people hanging out on a summer night, I was impressed that my order was ready pretty quickly (less than 5 minutes from placing the order). I decided to get the Vegan Kookaberry (vegan vanilla base) with blueberry and mango New Zealand style. It was good and serving was acceptable, but mine started to melt pretty quickly and was dripping over the side of my cup (about 5 minutes after getting it). Also, it is on the pricier side for ice cream, even without adding on things like toppings. For any non-dairy folks, you have to pay extra for the vegan substitution, which I genuinely find annoying. I do like that each order is made on the spot and you can customize flavors from time to time. I would go back again to try other options, but I personally wouldn't go out of my way for it.
I actually came here two days in a row! The first day was with my BF and my sister. They both got the pre-made mixes and I decided to go for a dirty soda. The strawberry grahamcake one was the best, but I felt like the mango sticky rice was a little low on flavor and then the dirty soda (the root beer float) was extremely sweet--a little overpowering. Luckily I went back with some friends the next day, so I was able to give this another try. I got the raspberri mudslide in a kiddie size. This was much better. I liked that it was like a raspberry chip soft serve with some chocolate drizzle. I agree with some of the other commenters that the touch screen ordering is a bit overwhelming, because there are so many options and abbreviations on the menu. I also think it creates a bit of a bottleneck with ordering because we were spending so much time scrolling through the touch screen and trying to figure out what our choices were and what we should get. Overall, I wasn't super wowed by the ice cream or the experience. It is refreshing, and if you like fruit ice creams/fro yo vibes, this might be great for you. But it was pretty expensive and some of the orders we got were misses.
Oh my god, some of the best and most unique desserts I've ever had! The new zealand style concept is so cool! I love how customizable it is, and it feels like you can't go wrong with any combo because everything just tastes so fresh. This is seriously a dessert you can't get enough of because it's perfectly sweet while still being light and rejuvenating! The service is kind and quick and the vibes are upbeat and fun! On top of that, the ice cream is stretchyyyy, what more could you want?
Unique ice cream store with the cutest mascot and decor! Loved the orange and white theme. You order from a kiosk, and your ice cream is served super quickly! They specialize in frozen yogurt-esque ice cream that it made with your choice of fruit, and either a vanilla or chocolate base. They dump everything into a cone that then squishes the flavors together and creates a soft serve. My friend got the kookaberry kids size, which clearly had remnants of berries inside and tasted incredibly refreshing with no heaviness. I got the Hokey Pokey kids size, which is a flavor from New Zealand with vanilla ice cream mixed with honeycomb toffee. Quite delicious and unique - not too sweet! Def heavier than the kookaberry. Prob would wanna try vanilla with mango next time for a more refreshing flavor.
One of my favorite ice cream places of all time. The ice cream is somehow refreshing and creamy and the same time, and truly not too sweet. So many fun flavor combos! The inside is so cute and service is very quick.
Good New Zealand style soft serve ice-cream blended with fruit and other toppings of your choice. Can be a bit too sweet but depends on your preference. Interior is clean and you order at the kiosk. Waffle cone is fresh.
a unique spot for new Zealand ice cream that fans of fruity ice cream will love! Far out is a trendy and casual spot where you customize your order at an iPad and offers a few seating options in and outside. I made my own combination with a vanilla base, mango chopped and blended in (blending on ingredients is their staple), and topped with condensed milk. It definitely was refreshing and felt lighter than ice cream but creamier than froyo. A cool option to mix up your sweet treat. It was however a little pricey. Service was fine nothing special.
The first time I had far out was actually at time out market in fenway. It was so good, I had to check out their original location in MA! To my expectations, this store is even better than imagined. Staff is friendly, self service kiosks are easy to use, store is clean and inviting, prepacked pints can be picked up in the back, and froyo is delicious. I really like their raspberry w/ chocolate flakes but thus time I got strawberry w/ graham cracker dust and it tasted like cheesecake! Tangy, creamy, and not too sweet. Highly recommend!
Highly recommend ordering for pickup, otherwise be prepared to wait. I got the kookaberry while my partner got the strawberry topped with crushed graham crackers. I enjoyed the kookaberry, similar to how I make a smoothie. My partner preferred mine too. I enjoy that you can customize whether you want a vanilla or chocolate base and what to top it with. Because it's so customized, they make each to order so it takes a while. They call out orders by name instead of number so you really can't tell when you'd be coming up unfortunately.
What a fun spot! Super cool flavor combos, ice cream is delicious and flavorful. I got a lavender latte as well, which was delicious. Would definitely come back.
We got the kookaberry with a vanilla base and chocolate base, to compare. The vanilla emphasized the berry flavors (wasn't prominent in the background) while the chocolate flavor was a bit stronger (and better imo!) We went on a Wednesday night and the wait was very long- maybe 10 min between ordering through the kiosk and receiving our ice creams. Granted there were only 2 people behind the counter and it was very busy, but this place is much slower than your typical ice cream shop. This was my first time here and I intentionally chose a basic flavor combo to try first- I'd return to try other funkier combinations for sure!

I came here two days in a row. It's a great icecream experience. My biggest highlight is their waffle cone is just perfect for the thickness and crispy level. Of course we came here for the new Zealand style ice cream too. The Kookaberry with premium vanilla in a waffle cone is my favorite choice, that brings the tart berry flavor with rich vanilla cream. Another option is order pineapple and vanilla soft-serve. This might bring you a similar taste of dole whip in Hawaii. read more

The smell of this spot always enticed me in passing. Finally got a taste and it did not disappoint. Pick an ice cream, pick fruit and toppings, everything gets blended up into a soft-serve. They give generous amt of ice cream so I'd opt for the kiddie next time. read more

Some very interesting ice cream. It's like an automated cold stone creamery or a super McFlurry machine where they put the ingredients into a cone and it mixes them. You have choices for frozen fruits, different base ice creams, and toppings. I went with their number one flavor Kookaberry and the ice cream is very smooth. It wasn't fully mixed in as we could still see some base vanilla. We did have a friend with a mango allergy and they were very helpful it making sure they had a new cone to mix their particular order. Although they don't clean out every order because many people do have orders with some leftover flavors from others. There is also quite a long wait time as each order needs to be made with the machine and could take quite a long time to complete. read more
Probably my new favorite ice cream spot- so fresh, creamy, and real. Literally- with real frozen fruits, none of that artificial stuff!! I had their pop up back in 2020 and was so excited about their opening an actual location. It's cute inside with a decent amount of seats, and now they have some outdoor seating too. The menu is simple enough for you to not be overwhelmed. My go to is the strawberry and mango mix with premium vanilla (I overheard you can mix up to 3 fruits). I crave Far Out ALL the time. It's worth the money. I love that they make it in front of you too, adding the fruits and mixing it into the cream. So you get a nice cold dessert fresh from the churn. Go visit if you're getting dinner by the Coolidge Area, or just cause you're craving- worth it read more

Hi Grier! Thank you for the great review! We would love to know what…
This was our first time trying New Zealand style ice cream and I am OBSESSED!!! Basically you pick either a chocolate or vanilla base and choose a fruit to mix in. We tried the kookaberry vanilla and pineapple vanilla and they were both amazing!! It's also not too sweet, which I love! Can't wait to be back!! read more

Far out! Before coming here, I'd never tried New Zealand style ice cream, and the best way to describe it is a fruity, creamy soft serve. You pick your size, base ice cream, fruit, and any toppings and then get to watch the staff make your treat right before your eyes! We went with the premium vanilla base and kookaberry, which is a fruit mix, topped with toasted coconut flakes. The texture of the ice cream is very smooth, so I enjoyed the coconut on top for some contrast. The color is beautiful, and the fruit flavor is refreshing. Perfect for a hot New Zealand... I mean Boston... day. I'm looking forward to coming back to try more base + fruit combos. Super choice! read more

Good, not great! I was really excited to try out New Zealand style ice cream after hearing about it on TikTok. It's cool that they blend frozen fruits into the soft serve. But the end result wasn't as tasty as I had hoped. The ice cream is incredibly smooth. The kookaberry (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry) is one of their signature flavors. I would recommend the kookaberry with vanilla dairy base. The mango with vanilla base did not have as strong of a fruity flavor. And the one I got had some leftover banana probably from the previous customer. It must be hard to fully clean out the machines between use. The banana added a nice sweetness. Perhaps it's a matter of finding the right blend! Maybe the chocolate + banana, or even their frozen yogurt would taste better. The space is cute! Worth checking out, but maybe just once. read more
Yum! Couldn't wait to try this spot after lunch. Was not busy at all in a Thursday afternoon. You pick a base flavor and then a frozen fruit. I went with vanilla and strawberry. They use actual fruitand blends it with the ice cream to get fruity ice cream. It was the perfect amount of strawberry. My friend got the affogato and it was perfection. Definitely recommend! Props to the employee for excellent hand hygiene. read more

It's decent soft serve, but a bit overpriced! A kiddy cup portion is plenty big. They recommended getting a fruit flavor with a chocolate base, but the vanilla was much better. I've been to New Zealand before, so I was disappointed that they didn't have the hokey pokey flavor! read more

I wasn't really sure what to expect, but a few friends recommended that I try this place. From what people described, I thought it might be like cold stone creamery, but this is very different! You basically choose an ice cream base, ingredients to add, and a topping. I got a vanilla base with mango and kookaberry (which is just a mix of blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries). I saw the guy add a scoop of ice cream and two scoops of frozen fruit into a machine which swirled out this pretty ice cream. It was really refreshing actually - not too sweet, pretty creamy. I felt like I was eating frozen Greek yogurt .. that's the best way I can describe this. Definitely worth try! I'll be coming back :) read more

We heard good things about this place but still didn't know what to expect walking into the store. Far out serves ice cream, muffins and coffee. Their ice cream is all hand mixed in front of you using their machines that they imported from New Zealand. It's a mix of one of their ice cream based (premium vanilla/chocolate or dairy free vanilla/chocolate) with fruit. So the caveat here is that you have to like fruit.. For our visit, we had Kookaberry & mango mixed with premium vanilla ice cream. Kookaberry is just a mixed berry. We chose granola as our topping, which was the perfect additional crunch. I would say this ice cream operates in its own lane because the texture and taste is kind of like a smoothie combined with frozen yogurt. It's unique, refreshing, and doesn't make you feel too heavy afterwards. I also LOVE fruit, so this is the perfect dessert for me. I kept craving more after I had it! Wish I had bought a pint to take home. read more

Came here for the first time and we were so excited to try soft serve ice cream that had fruit mixed in. The service was great and the guy there was very helpful in explaining and answering our questions. We got the kookaberry and strawberry banana swirled in. So good it's light and creamy and amazing. I would definitely go again. And it's such a unique place as well read more
Yum yum yum! My vanilla x kookaberry ice cream was refreshing and creamy! Kookaberry is a berry variety mix. You have the option of combining a base (vanilla, chocolate, dairy free vanilla) with one or more fruits. 1 part fruit + 1 part ice cream mixed together gives you the perfect concoction! The space is bright, clean, and brand new. The staff were cheery and welcoming. Can't wait to go back and try more flavors! read more
I wanted to like this place. It's so cute and has such a fun concept fresh ingredients. However, both times I've tried it I found the vegan icecream to be chalky and not mixed well at the bottom (the top is fruity and the bottom is not mixed). I tried it twice because my friend loves it and thought that maybe they just had a bad day the first time but I will not be going again. Also there are so many pricey up charges for toppings that it makes getting a small icecream unnecessarily expensive. read more
A must checkout local dessert place! We were looking for good dessert options and this place had coconut milk non dairy alternatives which was great! There are monthly flavors - December's being sugar plum and natural fruits added in for certain flavors. Which keeps it interesting and will have me returning soon! The Staff was immediately welcoming and helpful since it was our first time explaining our options and alternatives etc. The service was beyond quick too although we came on a weekday so not sure how busy they are on weekends. read more
Far Out is soooo so cute, and really a lovely addition to the strip of road between Coolidge Corner and Allston, which is severely lacking in really strong ice cream. Replacing the old A4 coffee spot, it serves up a variety of coffees (Nightshift beans), a small selection of pastries, and most importantly--New Zealand style ice cream! I've been to NZ twice and have never had this ice cream before but it was rich, full fat, and tasty. I actually loved the tartness of the fruit flavors; the ice cream tasted like what I *want* frozen full fat yogurt to taste like. The waffle cone was fresh ($1 extra) and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Service was quick as well. Only complaint is the prices are definitely high. For a kiddie scoop, vanilla, with a fruit flavor and waffle cone, we paid $6 per before tax. The serving size wasn't incredible either, but honestly a "healthy" and fulfilling amount--as in, I didn't feel bad about myself when I'd finished. Still, I don't mind paying for high quality ingredients and I'm near sure they use fresh fruit. Fun time! read more

As a froyo/soft serve aficionado, I was intrigued by far out. They tout themselves as "new Zealand" style ice cream. From what I can tell, the ice cream is made with a drill that manually pulverizes frozen fruit into an ice cream base of your choosing (vanilla, chocolate, froyo, dairy free) and is then extruded. I got the kookaberry which seems to be mixed berry flavor. Of course, this is not cheap ice cream. A medium size + cone will set you back ~$7. It's a labor intensive process, so I can understand the price. The ice cream is super photogenic (which is why I went) and the ice cream definitely tasted "high-end" like other local ice cream shops. However, both the kookaberry and pineapple didn't have a strong flavor (more creamy vanilla rather than fruit flavor) which was disappointing. I'm interested in trying the froyo base next time, as maybe the vanilla ice base was too overpowering. read more

4.5/5 Boston is home to a fair amount of solid ice cream places, making it really important for each place to have something to stand out from its competitors. Far Out decides to approach this by having making soft serve in a really unique machine that combines frozen fruit and whatever ice cream flavor you want. The result is a very creamy and fruity flavor, almost similar to a smoothie. It is a bit pricey (about $6 for a soft-serve), but if you're willing to pay that much, it's a good dessert experience read more

Looking for a new spin on a classic dessert?! Head over to Far Out for New Zealand Style Ice Cream. I have been here countless times since their opening, and I love it now just as much as I did after my first time there. I love how you choose your base ice cream flavor (dairy or non-dairy options included) and then your fruit add-ins! Then, the hard ice cream gets blended and swirled in with the fruit, making it the perfect soft serve consistency. My favorite flavor combo is the NZ Colada - vanilla ice cream with mango, pineapple, and toasted coconut flakes!! Pro tip: order the waffle cone!! They are made fresh in house :) Not a big ice cream fan ? They also have coffee, tea, and latte's! Will definitely be heading back soon to check out their monthly specials. read more

We had the chance to try their ice cream at an Night Shift Brewing event in Everett this afternoon. We bought this for our son who was very excited and we were excited to try it as it sounded interesting. The mango ice cream itself was less sweet than regular ice cream, quite flavorful, and quite creamy. The shocking part was the minuscule amount of ice cream. It was served in a plastic pint glass and barely came a third of the way up. Such a rip off. All that for $7.50 plus tip. Ridiculous. Their website offers larger for $7.00 so this travesty seemed like a cash grab. Be watchful if you seen them out and about as this deceptive practice might continue. read more
