I've been reluctant to come to this place for a while but ended up going once after a stand-up performance at the Wilbur. We were given a table way in the back, near the kitchen and bathroom. Since the kitchen door was open, leading to the outside, a strong stench of Chinatown dumpster permeated the back area, which did not lead to a good dining experience. The tropical lemonade had good flavor but was too sweet. I like the flavor profiles of watermelon, lychee, and peach, but it was just too much sugar. The garlic wings were pretty savory and flavorful, but were pretty tiny. At least I know they certainly not from hormone chickens. The Takes 2 to Mango was probably the best part of the experience but it wasn't perfect. While there is some strong mango flavor, there are more peach chunks than mango. Every time we have tickets to go to the Wilbur at 7, we go there for dinner. Great food and great selection. Their portions are quite large for the main course so my wife and i usually order a couple of appetizers and share one entree! We always say we want to eat less each time cause their dessert options look great too, but their main dishes are so good we never actually get a dessert. I had one of the weirdest and unexpectedly negative experiences at Double Chin this evening. I've heard good things about this restaurant previously. I came to Double Chin at around 12:30am (past midnight!) with a group after my fiancés birthday. There were many open tables and the restaurant wasn't busy. We sat down to grab a few desserts, but when we ordered the server refused service. He told us we had to order $75 of food in order to be served (we had ordered about $60 in desserts). This was not posted anywhere and was a pretty terrible end to the evening. They weren't willing to be flexible, even though they were open for several more hours and the restaurant was nearly empty. What a fun menu! Modern twist on Asian classics and then some. How about some boozy boba? You betcha, that's on the menu. Capri Sun style pouches with juices and soju...yep, got that too. So it's not only about the food at this cool restaurant. Located in the heart of Chinatown, it's the place to be for lunch, dinner or drinks galore. This was my first time dining here and there'll be many firsts each visit in the future. The menu was quite extensive and there were many classic noodle and rice plates but with a spin. The rave was the cubed toast but I couldn't resist ordering other goodies. Really, I wanted to order half of it just to try. Ha ha The goods I did get: - kimchi noodles with pork belly. Nice amount of heat in this dish. The noodles were delicious and topped with pieces of pork belly that had the right amount of fat and meat ratio. It's an awesome dish. - Shin ramen stir fry, yep - served with the tub looking like the noodles spilled onto the plate. It's just too cute. Very savory and comes topped with assorted vegetables. - poutine and cheese (secret ingredient I couldn't figure out), some kind of cream sauce added to this melty goodness. There's a nice cheese pull on this dish. - Spam and egg sandwich, sounds simple enough but it's next level...a sweet glaze was used on this that compliments the Spam. Don't like spam? No problem, you can choose ham, bacon or skip the meat. Drinks were all fantastic: we had a Yuzu, a lemon, and a matcha drink. The Thai Iced Tea didn't disappoint. We used to come here all the time when I lived in the city and it did not disappoint coming back! The portions are huge and everything we had was delicious. Service was super quick and it was a straightforward, no frills location. Highly recommend everything we got, especially the scallion pancakes! SERVICE: 6/10 I won't be overly harsh here since there was literally only one waitress/server and she was being bombarded everywhere at all the tables. However, it literally took 30 minutes for us to get our check. That's a little too much to ask even if she was doing her best. They need more staffing. FOOD: 7/10 Tteok Bokki - 7/10 - About average for tteok bokki. Not overpowering spiciness but also not super sweet either. I do like the modern touch of cheese over the top which is trending these days. I thought this was a decent dish, but not one that I would specifically come here for. Peking Duck Fries - 7/10 - One of the more unique dishes here. French fries topped with Peking duck and hoisin sauce. I thought this was a decent combination that was good, but not the excellence of fusion. The fries worked with the duck but did not really make it better than the traditional dish. Matcha Ma Callit Toast - 8/10 - Hong Kong style French toast with a bunch of toppings and several scoops of matcha ice cream. This is definitely sized for a group to eat but I thought it was a great dessert with a random smattering of food. VALUE: 5/10 Dishes are pretty expensive, even for Boston. Great place to go to eat after a night out, if you're hungry, and yes it does get busy but there's usually tables available. Double Chin is Asian Fusion and has a bunch of fun dishes. I like getting the XO sautéed rice rolls! It's basically dry stir fried chow fun. The kimchi fried rice is a bit too saucy for my liking. Their drinks are mostly soju or beer so you won't find any strong mixed drinks here. Their soju shots roulette is good for big groups. We have gotten 5-6 rounds of the roulette in the past. Desserts are also not bad either. They have shaved ice/bingsu. read more

Can't believe I'm rating this spot as low as this, but man, have the times changed because this place used to be oh so much better. Food was alright, but the atmosphere seemed messier than it used to be. Plus, the server was a bit rude to my group tonight - especially pushing us to order much more, as we were told about needing to have a "$15 minimum per person" just when we were trying to order, which seemed pretty forced as the server just kept pushing and pushing us to order more. For the most frustrating thing, there was a non-negotiable 20% minimum tip based on the original price of our order, even after the 10% cash discount... even if we were a little bit short on change to make the 23 cents that we owed from the non-negotiable amount. I finally came to this restaurant after hearing so much about it from my friends. We came on a Saturday afternoon around 6 pm and had no trouble grabbing a table. Initially they wanted to seat us at a high table but seeing as there were plenty of other regular height tables, we requested for that and were met with no resistance. We went to family style and ordering and therefore tried their Cola Wings, Roast Duck (half), Singapore Rice Noodle, Double Chin Fried Rice, and XO Seafood Noodles XO. The wings were crispy but I did not get very much Coca-Cola taste out of it, so I was not sure if it was really worth the hype. The duck was delicious and beautifully seasoned, but as usual, you just have to be smart with picking your pieces as some can be very bony. The Singapore noodles were thin pairing well with the curry, lots of vegetables, and scrambled egg bits. The fried rice was like any other traditional house fried rice with all the fixings. The seafood noodles had scant amounts of seafood and was probably my least favorite dish out of the lot. For drinks, my party of 6 shared two of the large fish bowl drinks and two games of roulette (one lychee and the other strawberry) while playing jenga rather competitively. Overall, we had a fun experience and would definitely come again. Service was friendly and accommodating. I recommend others to check them out as will I! read more

There was some type of Korean fusion going on in this restaurant as I saw a lot of Korean-type dishes, but to be honest, if you want Korean food, I'll suggest you find another place cause there's no authenticity in the taste of the cuisine and it has a weird tang. The service was decent and the place in itself is a cafeteria type setting. The drinks are very good. They pour them strong. Really liked the Asian Mule and the Litty boba drink. The elote fried rice was very tasty but a little small. Veggie dumplings taste excellent and are fried to perfection. I dont know if they make them in house but I feel like they might. Crunchy Ramen Salad is so tasty! Love the flavors. Wasnt a huge fan of the soju roulette, there were a couple flavors in there that no one at the table could stomach. Taro and spam fries are solid. I thought that was strange but okay. My friend and I asked about getting a side of rice, and they said we could split one; that split cost us 18 dollars. We were shocked to see that surprise on the check. I should have just had that for dinner at that price. I ordered the chili popcorn chicken as my main; it was small pieces of chicken that were hard and VERY dry. It had no sauce; I wouldn't even describe it as Chinese chicken. On a Thursday evening, a friend and I decided to get a later-than-usual dinner. We arrived at Double Chin at 8:45 and received immediate seating. As I perused the menu, I noticed that the establishment did not offer the normally expansive set of options characteristic of HK style cafes (300+ items). Rather, the menu had been culled down, with some items added to appease the youthful and whimsical sensibilities of its clientele (e.g. stir-fried shin ramyun, menu photo complete with the cup noodle packaging). I decided to order the XO sauteed rice rolls / 煎腸粉 ($14). This oily, salty, and shellfish-funky dish satisfied my craving for something utterly devoid of nuance. Even for the standards of this dish (and that of comparable dishes, such as wok sauteed rice noodles with beef / 乾炒牛河, however, this dish proved overly oily and salty. Out of (morbid) curiosity, my friend and I also ordered a mix alcoholic beverage bowl to share. The "Under the Sea" ($28), with yuzu soju, green apple, and gummy shark, tasted like a liquid jolly rancher. Doubts about the existence of liquor in this beverage grew in my head, as I felt a headache building from all that sugar. I imagine that I am not this beverage's target demographic. read more

I've tried the soju roulette, the fishbowl drinks, and other soju/saka cocktails. All of them are flavorful but aren't that strong, something to take into consideration. If you have a sweet tooth, this place is for you. Their desert options are quite decadent and filling. I've orders their signature deserts and it is something you definitely have to share with another person. I don't have much of a sweet tooth but it is something nice to snack on while drinking. I've also tried their spam fries which were ok. The interior feels almost like a cafe. There are these vine lines when you walk into the establishment and even a bakery attached to the restaurant as well. It was quite pleasant, especially for a place to chill after dinner. The peanut salad smelled very off (tbh, it had a sewage odor which was off-putting) and tasted way too sweet and the texture of the sauce was gritty and that was hard to get around. The spicy chicken sandwich was pretty good. Was expecting spicy and sweet since the bun is from a pineapple bun, but the radishes gave it more of a sour taste. Not bad but different. Eating at Double Chin is truly an experience!! I first found out about the restaurant through the Fung Bros' youtube videos on hidden gems in Boston chinatown. When I first saw Double Chin appear, I thought "hmm, I've never heard of the store" but upon hearing Gloria, the owner, speak about the store and her aspirations with it, I was moved by how she wished to connect her American and Asian roots and bring tasty foods from her childhood onto an actual restaurant menu. It was about representation and shining light on this bicultural identity, and I really identified with that passion of theirs as a Chinese-American as well and wanted to support that. I first came a few weeks ago, bringing 2 other friends. We already had so many foods from the menu that we wanted to try and came prepared! However, showing up, the menu had so many MORE enticing items that we just couldn't leave without trying. We ended up leaving with 7 dishes total for us 3 along with a BIG cube toast and boba drinks...and boy, we were so full but we just had to go full out and try everything we did. We later came back again a week or 2 ago. There are many popular fusion spots in big cities that appear nice and aesthetic but don't really deliver. However, this spot in particular, the food looks nice AND tastes good!! Everything was enjoyable. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of how certain menu items combined different Asian and American ingredients. My favorites were probably the Elote fried rice and the Skillet mac n cheese with the rice noodles! Both just had such addicting flavors, it was hard to stop eating either of them, even when I was full. I probably wouldn't get the shin ramyun noodles or peking duck fries again personally! For drinks, the capri fun SPF 60 was really tasty, and I'm not normally an alcoholic drinker. Another fun part was that my group and I even got to converse w/ the owner Gloria for a while, who shared with us her goals in designing and creating Double Chin, and she was so lovely to speak with! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. It was such a fun time, and the workers and owner there are so nice! A lil overpriced but they have fun and creative takes on Hong Kong / Chinese classics! Recently got the Peking duck fries and mango shaved ice. I wanted more duck on the fries and the fries could have been saltier. Shaved ice flavoring was quite artificial tasting but at least it saturated all the ice. The ice also wasn't very fine. I've only been here once, but it seemed like a really fun place. There were hardly any people when I went, but the inside was cutely decorated and yet casual. There was soft covers of oldies playing in the background. The servers were nice, and food and drinks came out quickly. Some of the menu items are really quirky, and the dish I ordered (kimchi alfredo) worked surprisingly well. I would be back to try some more of the interesting dishes. I'm short, overpriced and disappointed. This is my second time trying Double Chin and these are both items that I have not tried before. Portuguese Chicken Rice - At $17 I'd expect something of better quality. It's an egg fried rice base with a curry chicken sauce over the top. The sauce just tasted of old grease used for cooking. Rice was decent, I didn't bother finishing the chicken. Ramen Crusted Fried Chicken - $19 this was way overpriced. It was one wing flat, a chicken thigh, and a drumstick. All the pieces were dry, but the drumstick especially had one side that was so dry and hard that I couldn't pierce it with my fork. The thigh was a little better but was super stringy. For $15 I can get a small combo from Crave that is way better. To drop $45 after tip on this was extremely disappointing especially since there is little HK cafe style food around Boston. read more
