This place has a handwritten note on the mirror that says, "Voted Best Restaurant in Southie for 4 Years in a Row." After dining here, my thought was that it's probably because that's as long as they've been open. I have no idea if that's actually true, but that's just how good their food and dining experience is. The very first thing we noticed when we sat at the bar was how refreshing the water was. I immediately got excited for my meal because, as I told my coworker, "Any place that pays this much attention to the small details and cares about serving the highest-quality tasting table water, their meals have gotta be GOOWD!" And the award-winning tofu burger was just that. But equally impressive were the fries. And then the ginger butter and BBQ dipping sauces absolutely stole the show. They were so good that I found myself scrounging around, looking for anything left on the table to dunk into those uniquely layered flavor-packed sauces just so I'd have an excuse to consume a little more. Then came the literal cherry on top...or perhaps the cookie on top. The chef/owner made a surprise appearance at our table and blessed us with some unbelievably delicious cookies to cap off the night. What a joyous way to end an already fantastic meal. There are some things on a menu that you don't really have a choice but to order. Jalapeño crab rangoons are one of those things. As soon as we saw them at Moonshine 152, it was an auto order, and they were exactly what you'd hope for: the perfect combination of a jalapeño popper and a crab rangoon. We started the night outside on the patio with those, a Downeast cider for me, my favorite, and a Battery Steele Golden Path Pilsner. Great weather, a view of the Pru in the distance, and crab rangoons on the table. Pretty hard to complain. For dinner, I went with Leslie Knope's Fried Chicken and Waffle. Somehow, I had never actually had chicken and waffles before, and now I understand why it's such a lethal combination. The chicken had exactly the crispiness I was craving, and throwing the sweetness of the waffle, cinnamon honey butter, and sriracha-bourbon sauce into the mix completely sold me on the whole sweet and savory thing. I now also understand why Chick-fil-A looked at chicken and waffles and essentially decided to make a sandwich out of it. My friends went with the burger and birria gringo tacos, and both gave their respective orders top marks. The best thing we ate, though, was the bananas n' cream gooey butter cake. Gooey butter cake always slaps, and Moonshine's version was top notch. Chef and owner Asia Mei even gave us a larger order, which leads to probably my favorite thing about Moonshine. Mei brought out all of our food herself and stopped to talk with us throughout the meal. That kind of thing is cool. There are plenty of places where you can get good food, but having the person behind the restaurant actually interacting with you and making you feel taken care of is the type of thing that separates a place. Everyone else working there was just as friendly and attentive, and the whole night felt easy. Sitting outside with friends, looking out toward the Pru, drinking good beer and cider and eating food that was actually fun to order is exactly what I want out of a neighborhood restaurant. Then I found out they do a burger of the month. I love a monthly burger. Give me an excuse to come back every month and see what you've come up with, and there's a pretty good chance I'm going to take you up on it. We had such an incredible experience from start to finish, and the food definitely delivered on flavor! I ordered the Pork Belly Bao Buns, and let me just say... that pork belly practically melted in my mouth! Every bite was bursting with flavor. I also tried their Chocolate Covered Cherries Jello Shots, and WOW! They were dangerously good--the best I've ever had! Then came dessert: the Tropical Mango Pavlova. Sadly, I didn't get a picture because I was too busy devouring it! It was THAT good. But I did manage to take a picture of this delicious, buttery cookie the chef brought out. I honestly wish I knew the name of it because I would have ordered two dozen to take back home to Texas! My husband and his coworker ordered burgers, and one of them had a fried egg on top--and it was a veggie burger! Everything was so good that there were absolutely NO leftovers and NO doggie bags. Let's just say all of our plates were practically licked clean! The chef was amazing! ‍ She actually came out to check on the guests and make sure everyone was happy with their food. That personal touch made the experience even better. The bartender was just as impressive, making sure everyone at the bar was taken care of and serving up some fantastic mixed drinks. They even gave us an extra dessert as a thank you which was totally unexpected but very much appreciated. The chicken was full of flavor and they dressed the rice in the perfect amount of sauce. The crab Rangoon have a spicy jalapeño sauce and come on a bed of greens. The shishito peppers have a sauce too - couldn't tell what it was, but we enjoyed it. Fusion in the best possible way! Moonshine 152 is near our son's apartment and we've only been twice.. but both times we were absolutely enthralled by the options, the vibe, and the FOOD! It is soooo good! The menu has so much variety that my only complaint is that I can't physically eat a fraction of the things that look good! Today's awesomeness according to the eaters: Chicken wings- outstanding, required if you like chicken! Meatballs- very tasty and tender and seductively fragrant with a touch of tang. Yum. Chicken dumplings- deliciously! (I asked for one word, there you have it Braised rabbit pasta- creamy but delicate, slightly tangy, tender and succulent! The Soft Shell Crab Bao was a showstopper. Lightly fried with that ideal crunch, the pickled veggies and aioli brought balance, depth, and pure magic in every bite. Each flavor married the next well. Then came the Grilled Fish Tacos and Birria Style Short Rib Tacos both absolutely to die for. The birria tacos were juicy and deeply flavored, with the consomme adding a bold richness that lingered perfectly. The fish tacos were fresh and kinda zesty, topped with avocado and a slaw that made every bite feel like summer. The Jalapeño Crab Rangoon was PERFECTLY seasoned and cooked to perfection. The Dirty Fried Rice with Grilled Shrimp was one of my favorite dishes of the night. Every forkful had soul. The Cajun spices, caramelized onions, and juicy shrimp packed a dynamic punch. The I elevated by adding extra scallions. Each bite reminded me of the home cooked meals I grew up with in a kitchen where flavor was never optional. We also had the Korean Fried Chicken Wings and let me just say, yummalicious. Crispy on the outside, tender inside and unforgettable. And do not even get me started on the Ricotta Bruschetta . The grilled bread was buttery and crispy, and the toppings were fresh heirloom tomatoes, basil oil, and balsamic glaze. It was one of those "close your eyes and moan" dishes that you never want to end. What took this night from amazing to extraordinary was Chef Asia Mei herself. When your meal is delivered by the very hands that crafted it, there is a connection that forms between the plate and your heart. You feel the love, the intention, the joy of a chef who truly cooks with purpose. As someone raised in a home where good food and dessert were acts of love, and where my father, a gifted baker and cook, filled our home with unforgettable flavors, this meal literally felt like heaven had loaned him back to me for one night. Came here with my daughter and her friends-realized as we neared the restaurant that I've been before, probably 8 years ago before we left Boston. It's held up! The food was delicious! This place is surprisingly good. Their door is not obvious (looks like back door). They have indoor and outdoor seating. I got the sangria, Spicy Lamb Meatballs and Crispy Tempura Fish Tacos. Everything is good. I like the lamb meatballs the most. It actually doesn't look too appetizing when it was served, but the meat balls are very flavorful and they are not dry at all. It's the greatest surprise. The fish tacos are good and flavorful too. The fish is very tender, even though I don't feel the crispy part. Maybe the sauce made it not crispy anymore. The chef is clearly a local icon and was running dishes in the front as well as cranking out orders quickly from the kitchen. The aesthetic with her quirky art wasn't what I expected but made me want to come back for brunch. Drink menu was creative. Not the strongest drinks I've had but plenty of interesting choices. I love that moonshine is critically acclaimed, yet is casual and extremely unpretentious. I would return for the vibes alone. Chef Asia's art is hung around everywhere and staff is very friendly, which makes for a homey and cozy feel. Chef Asia herself brought out our food, which is top tier hospitality. The food is amazing too. Crab Benedict is a solid choice- decent amount of crab, eggs aren't poached but aren't greasy, and the English muffin is very fluffy. I'm glad I got the hollandaise on the side as they brought out a sizeable amount, and it's quite spicy. It also didn't strike me as a traditional hollandaise. The food here makes me feel like the critic from ratatouille when he tastes the dish for the first time

The food was SO good, but what was really amazing was Chef Asia coming by our table herself to hand us the food and just make sure that we were having a good time. Everything we ate made me so impressed at how one can elevate foods such as french toast and tater tots but this place did. The french toast sticks were crispy on the outside and so soft on the inside, and it didn't feel super heavy. The phorrito was huge and each bite was an explosion of flavors. I would definitely come back over and over to try everything again. read more

My husband and I had brunch at moonshine 152 last weekend and told friends about it. Next thing you know, the four of us were in there around noon time today having brunch again. We shared three starters, alongside sharing all four entrées and everything, I mean everything was to die for! Ms Asia herself delivered some of our plates and she is just as delightful as she is talented. Needless to say, dinner is amazing here as well. The vibe in the restaurant is so easy and you can tell that the staff get along very well together. What I can't believe is how this place wasn't fully packed today or last weekend even. I had a great time at Moonshine 152 for dinner recently. We came on a weeknight evening as a party of two for dinner and we were sat at a booth by the windows. The ambiance was nice, it felt casual and inviting with a general buzz of chatter from all of the other patrons. We started with a couple of cocktails - the 'shine summer sling ($14) and the fly me to the moon ($16) as well as the spicy lamb meatballs ($18). The drinks were okay, the fly me to the moon was better than the 'shine summer sling but they didn't wow us. The spicy lamb meatballs were really tasty - just spicy enough that didn't overkill the palate with a reminiscent taste of kofta and Swedish meatball combined. This made us more excited for the remainder of our meal. We ordered the tempura softshell crab bao buns ($26-$29, it's MP) and Ron Swanson's chipotle pulled pork scallion pancake quesadilla ($28) for our entrees then later on ordered the 'shine famous bacon wrapped stuffing bites ($17) and "Dubai" Belgian waffle ice cream sundae ($16) in addition to 2 pina colada Jell-O shots ($7 each). The scallion pancake quesadilla was really good! The long name for the dish threw me off but I was pleasantly surprised by the dish and would definitely get it again. It does have tomatoes in it which I found to be an interesting addition and could do without it next time. The bao buns were really decent sized and tasty too! A solid menu addition for the summer and would probably get again. The stuffing bites were okay - they tasted exactly as described but they weren't a huge hit for us. The best part was dessert - the Belgian waffle tasted like a fried dough churro situation which was divine. The ice cream was good and so were the toppings - this was such a hit for us. We would probably skip on the Jell-O shots, they seemed fun and whimsical but also silly. Service was great - very attentive by the server and the owner/head chef brought out each dish which felt personable and inviting.
