I stopped by with no reservation on a Tuesday night with my mother, we saw a few more seat fill up while we were there. I ordered the vegetarian, she the omnivore. They were more similar than the menu made them out to be, but the flavors for both were tailored to the dish perfectly. I would go back again in a heartbeat. Pea pudding thing was incredible, duck was probably the best I've ever had. One note is that the "foam" for dessert is far more of a cream than a foam. I enjoyed my meal at Lenox Sophia. The restaurant is a small intimate place and I had nice conversations with the owner and the other chef while they cooked. Super nice guys. Food is made with simple ingredients but is very fresh and well executed. I plan to eat here again when the menu shifts to the autumn ingredients. I suggest trying this place out for the friendly staff and to see how simple ingredients with good execution can equal great food. Scallop ceviche- came on a potato square which was nice and crunchy on outside and tender on inside. Came with a nice acidic sauce. Scallop was nice and tender. 4/5 Pea custard- delicious. Nice vegetative flavor flavor with just a hint of salt. The custard was nice and velvety. The whole peas had a nice bite and added good texture. 5/5 Rice and peas with crawfish- very simple. I was in Boston visiting a lady friend (flex) and wanted to take her out to a nice dinner. I got to work looking for the perfect restaurant and I stumbled upon Lenox Sophia. I looked it over and decided to make a reservation. When we arrived the staff was very friendly and sat us immediately. They are currently BYOB (we picked up a bottle of wine just down the street on the way) and the staff got straight to work uncorking our wine. The restaurant itself is pretty small but also intimate and charming. There was a handful of tables as well as some bar seating in front of the open kitchen. If I ever have the pleasure of returning I would likely request the bar seating in order to be closer to the chefs. They are currently only offering a 5 course prix-fixe menu, but in my opinion it was well worth it. There is an omnivore and a vegetarian option and the lady friend is vegetarian/vegan/whatever the new trend these days is so it worked out perfectly. It's nice that both of our dietary preferences were able to be accommodated in such a hassle free way. Overall the food was very good. I cannot speak on the lady friend's experience with the vegetarian menu, but my omnivore menu was great. The duck confit was the star of the show for me. The outer skin was crisp but the meat was tender and ready to fall off the bone. Added bonus that went I went to piss there was a photo of a Lamborghini Countach hanging up. All men definitely appreciate that. All in all I had a great experience and believe the lady friend did too despite her having to spend the evening with me. read more

My fiancee and I are Bostonians, both vegetarians, and were looking forward to dining at Lenox Sophia. It turned out to be a (shoulder-shrugging) *just okay* and a somewhat underwhelming and disappointing experience. FYI - we ordered the vegetarian menu, and my comments below pertain to this experience. Some info: The restaurant only has 2 prix-fixe menu options (vegetarian and standard/omnivore). At the time of this writing, the price for either is $109 per person (no drinks included). The restaurant does not have an alcohol license, so you can BYOB. We both ordered the vegetarian option, with a couple of bottles of sparkling water (extra charge), and our check with gratuity (and an added kitchen service charge) was approximately $350. Was this experience worth it? Not really, and certainly not for this amount, and we will not be repeating it. Atmosphere: The restaurant is on a quiet non-descript street, on the ground floor of a residential (?) building. It is very cramped, about the size of an apartment living room - with very small wooden cafeteria-style tables. It seats about 16 people or so. Seating was uncomfortable, and very next-to-each-other (we had to hear conversations of both tables on either side, and the conversations were not particularly loud). Staff consisted of 3 people (owner, another chef, and a single waiter who attended to all 16 people - there was no place for another waiter - premises were small as I noted!). With that said, the waiter was friendly and courteous. Meal: It was alright. One of the risks with a prix-fixe menu is that not all of the dishes may be to your liking. It's saying something when I note that the dessert was the best out of the 5! Portions may be small for the average person. We tend to be light eaters, and so were okay. The first course - some raw vegetable dish - was very forgettable. The second course - a sweet pea gelatin - was not good at all for us; the seasoning (or lack of) was off, and there an unpleasant aftertaste that persisted for a while. The main third course was pasta - it was okay, nothing special, but we had expected something more inspired than linguine! The next main was a chickpea panisse, which was well-presented and fine. Dessert was a flourless chocolate tart/cake, and was delicious. Service: As I noted above, the waiter was friendly, polite, and attentive. A glaring thing is that the table next to us was receiving preferential treatment from the chefs, extra dishes and samplings... This is totally understandable, but in a restaurant of this size - where we are pretty much right next to each other where everyone could witness this - it was quite off-putting. It would also have been nice if we were asked if there were any dishes we did not like or enjoy, and were given an option to substitute away (similar to the table next to us). If the restaurant is going to only serve 16 or so people each evening from a prix-fixe menu, we would expect more attentive service from the owner and chef at this price, better ambience and seating, and a more innovative menu. read more

It's BYOB but if you go to the wine shop, Social Wines, right across the street and let them know you're going to Lenox they will direct you where to go for wines you need to bring for the menu they have at the time. It's a small 16 seat joint so it felt so homey. The food was absolutely incredible. The duck was cooked to perfection. The website says dining time is 90 minutes but we were there on a slower weeknight so we were able to shoot the breeze with the chefs Shi and Andre while we finished our wine in a great atmosphere. I came here over a year ago and to this day I still think about how this was the worst meal I've had in Boston and every time I think I have a bad meal somewhere else, I tell myself "at least it was cheaper than that $200 meal at Lenox Sophia" I had gotten a raving review from a coworker and so was super intrigued by certain dishes on the menu, only to arrive to a $100 per person pre-fixe menu. The space is tiny, we were seated RIGHT next to the door, there's barely any hall space for people to even walk in. Crudo - bland, but refreshing? Not much is going on. Just some herbs on top of gelatinous cubes. Mushrooms - apparently these were supposed to taste like sugar cookies and had some fancy miso seasoning but they were literally just seared mushrooms. Can we talk about the ridiculous portion??!! And anticlimactic plating! Tagliatelle bolognese - this was the only course where I felt like I was actually being fed and not teased. A decent portion of pasta for a tasting menu, solid bolognese, noodles were on the weaker side / felt handmade. Fish - could be any white fish because it was so boring. Texturally quite nice and tender as if it had been sous vide, because it certainly looked sous vide from the sad pale exterior. But this slice of fish was the size of my thumb probably. Dessert - didn't think something could actively taste bad but this flan was made worse by trying to pair it with the sour passion fruit sauce and the bitter almond lace. Service felt rushed and aloof. I see the significance around them getting their BYOB license but that doesn't mean the food is gonna be good. Don't let alcohol trick you into thinking everything is yummier! read more

Lenox Sophia has a lot of great reviews, and made this year's list of the top 50 restaurants in Boston, so we had to give it a try. The atmosphere is cute, and trendy. The restaurant is small, so make a reservation ahead of time. The price seemed reasonable ($99) for the five course tasting menu compared to some others we had been to. The food however, was very lacking in flavors, and was quite boring. I was appreciative that they had a vegetarian option and could substitute out some of the menu items to make them dairy free, but this could have been part of the problem. The first course I got was the dairy free and vegetarian option of beet tartar with a beet chip. While it looked fancy and tasted good, it felt like it was just beets chopped up very tiny with vinegar, something I could have eaten at home. It could have been a cute amuse-bouche, but not for an entire course. The second course I got was a fried chickpea cake with cucumber. Again, it was good and presented well, but really lacked in flavor. I've had better chickpea fries at vegan restaurants. The third course was my favorite, the rice porridge or congee. The congee was good, however was mostly one note and only tasted like the salt cod that was advertised. However, salt cod is one of my favorite foods, so I was happy. I did wish it had a little more spice - the chef mentioned that there was a chili crunch on it, but we did not taste any spiciness. We got the duck for the fourth course and while the duck was very tasty, it seemed to only be seasoned with salt and pepper and there was a very tiny amount of duck jus on the plate. It was good, but again, super boring, unimaginative, and lacking flavor. I was happy that they could accommodate a dairy free dessert, but it was very hard to eat. It was a chocolate mouse that was so bitter and salty that I could barely eat half. The non dairy free dessert looked much better and tasted good. The service was quick and the waiters were friendly, but I did wish they explained the dishes a bit more. Overall, the food was good, but felt very un-inspired. The menu is seasonal, so I'm sure the next menu will be different, and maybe better tasting and more unique. read more

BYOB of wine, and get the meat pie. do not forget to bring a bottle of wine, they will cork it for you. you can bring 1 bottle per guest. i can not stress this enough, don't forget your wine! this is a hidden gem and can feel a litte claustrophobic once inside. fight the urge to back out and sink into the space, groove to the 90s hip hop playlist, and make friends with the people next to you - you are about to go on a food experience with them. the service is like being waited on at an old friends house while he tries out a new menu. it's that comforting. i wanted to pull a chair up to our table and ask our waiter if he wanted to join us. the ambiance gives casual chic, perfect for an anniversary date night or a let's grab some after work evening. the food. we went with the carnivore side of the menu and so glad we did. the table next to us swapped out their meat pie for the vegetarian option and boy were they sorry. the scallops were perfectly cooked and complimented nicely by yukon potatoes. the trumpet mushroom dish was salt and peppered to perfection with i believe it was a miso glaze. whatever it was i didn't want this dish to end! next was the meat pie, which we felt seemed a little disjointed from the rest of the menu, but the was the star! a perfect flake on the crust with a touch of sweetness to compliment a delicious meat filling. our table mates swapped for the chickpea pinasse and wound up drooling over our dish all night. they even made reservations for a month later right then and there just so they could try the meat pie. rounding out the meal was the duck confit and monkfish, both good, however i'd recommend the monkfish over the duck if you're torn. i honestly don't remember dessert, the meal was that good. looking forward to going back when they swap up the menu. read more

UPDATE: Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the Boston area. I just wish Boston's BYOB regulations, which they enforce in every detail here, were not written by someone who hates wine and doesn't know anything about the restaurant business (thank you, Michelle Wu). They have switched from al la carte to a $98 5-course tasting menu, which changes periodically, with either omnivore or vegetarian versions (some dishes in common between the two), and two choices for the omnivore 4th course (fish vs chicken). We ordered both, and both were sensational and worth every penny (see photos). The tomato/gooseberry 1st course was an unexpected brilliant match for the 2010 Va La Mahogany (the best winery in the eastern half of the US that you've never heard of). Service is pleasant. Lenox Sophia is now on a prix fixe menu for ~$125 per person after tax and tips. At that price, I had expected much, much more, both in quality and quantity. Although the chefs did a good job in building a menu that slowly increases the flavor profile over each dish, it felt like a symphony (with occasional hecklers, you'll see why later) that ended abruptly. The whole thing felt like a tease. Like my partner and I started making sweet, sweet love but they were hit with a bout of premature e....nding, then just kicked me out. I left hungry and disappointed. First, we were seated by the door. The door didn't have a damper and slammed shut with an alarmingly loud thud every time someone walked in and out of the restaurant, which seemed to happen every 5-10 minutes. This didn't seem to bother the staff though, as they also let the door just slam shut. Onto the food. We started with the fluke crudo. It was light and refreshing and had a very mild flavor. The fish didn't taste seasoned or cured, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Then the king trumpet mushrooms. Nicely grilled, served with a honey garlic mung bean miso paste. However, if you substituted that sauce with a maple or honey miso, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The mushrooms themselves could have used a more salt, and it could have been served with some carbs on the side. Toast or rice would be nice. Tagliatelle Bolognese was solid. There was a nice tomato flavor and meatiness in the sauce and the pasta had a texture that was more crumbly than chewy. It tasted like something you'd get from an Italian grandma. Wild striped bass with soubise had a wonderful texture. The fish was moist throughout and tasted like it had been nicely brined. The texture was kinda like a scallop. The soubise had a smooth texture and there were leeks and red onions at the bottom of the dish. However, the soubise was lukewarm, and that was confusing. Up until this point, every dish was served in what seemed like artisanal ceramicware. However, this was a terrible choice because every time the fork or knife touched these dishes, it screeched worse than nails on a chalkboard. The dessert was flan de leche with almond lace and passionfruit sauce. It was a generous portion of flan, as big as the striped bass from the dish prior. The almond lace and caramel were both bitter and the passionfruit sauce was very tart. Nothing on the plate paired well together. Felt like they threw on random flavors and expected the guests to enjoy it. In the middle of dessert, the server plopped the check in front of us. Are you rushing us out or something? read more

We had a fun time trying to pinpoint transitional Colombian/Chinese ingredients/tastes in all dishes, but the only thing we didn't quite get was the bolognese which tasted just...Italian (or American Italian).
