He won Chopped. He beat Bobby Flay. He was a finalist for Top Chef. Laurence Louie is our local celebrity chef! His Rubato HK Cafe is accessible and delicious. My parents owned the spot years ago when it was Timmy Cafe. They sold the spot to Laurence's mom and she in turn sold it to him. The space is bright and the food is fire. There's not a lot of seating but there's a steady stream of people ordering to go. Laurence will also host pop up experiences for local chefs. My daughter loves their plain congee. I'm a big fan of the Rubato Fun Fun. The brisket in there tells you that Laurence knows how to make Chinese brisket the right way. They also have an amazing brisket steamed bao. The Fun Fun is loaded with everything you would want on a cheung fun dish mixed together. The highlight for me and keeps me coming back is the bolo fried chicken sandwich. There's so much going on between the sweet, flaky, and fluffy bolo bao, filled with a generous serving of a delectable fried chicken and saucy slaw. You get a complex mixture of flavors and textures in every bite. It can get messy, so lean forward and eat over your dish. I love that Laurence is often in the store and giving time to the fans of his TV cooking competitions. His team are also super competent and kind. I used Rubato catering for an event and the participants are still raving about the spread months later. Don't sleep on this local celebrity spot!
4.5/5 but rounding up to a 5. Came by on the weekend right before 11am and all of the seats were available. We ordered 3 items and absolutely loved 2 out of 3. The first item we tried was the HK French Toast Lava Egg Yolk which tbh is always a winner for my husband and I no matter where we get it. The second item we tried was the Cha Siu Bolo Bao. I'm usually not a big cha siu person so it was just okay for me. The bolo bao is also not quite what I expected, it has a different texture to it than most bolo baos. Overall not bad but just not for me. The last item was the salt pepper chicken with rice which we didn't expect much from but loved. The chicken has a nice crunch but also juicy. The seasoning used is also delicious. All in all a delicious meal and we will definitely be back! I'd skip the bolo bao next time though.
Trying Hong Kong cafe for the first time. I was overwhelmed by the menu on the wall so I asked for recommendations by the woman taking the orders. She recommended the fried chicken Bolo. I got shrimp steam rolls, Chinese donuts, ovaltine French toast, ice coffee, hot soy milk and cold soy milk. The fried chicken bolo was interesting. She told me it was the most popular item on the menu. I personally don't understand why. It is fried chicken with a slaw and on a bun with some sort of crumble on top. I was not impressed. The Chinese donuts were cold and old tasting; I was super disappointed. The shrimp steam rolls were very delicious! The ovaltine French toast is sweet. It has ovaltine powder on it and it's covered with sweetened condensed milk. It is tasty, sweet and a bit messy to eat but I enjoyed it. Iced coffee was strong. Iced soy milk is preferred over hot soy milk but that is just personal preference and it was over 90 degrees outside. It is a small cafe with limited seating at the window. The menu is on the wall. You order and when it's done they call your number. It is NOT ADA friendly. You have to climb stairs to get in. It was quite difficult for me as I was using my cane. This was my first Hong Kong style fast food cafe created by Chopped Champion and James Beard semifinalist Chef Laurence Louie and Rary Ratsifa. After going to another Hong Kong cafe nearby, and having something to compare this to, I would not return to this establishment as I think there are better Hong Style cafes with better food and ADA friendliness establishments.
More of a 3.5 but I'll round up. We came on a Wednesday right at noon and it wasn't too busy but we still had to wait for a seat since they only have seating along the window for like 10ppl max. So definitely more of a takeout place. We got the fried chicken bolo bao and the rubato fun fun (rice roll with Beef Brisket. Curry Fishball. Sesame Sauce. Hoisin.). The bolo bao was soft, had good flavor and a nice topping. The sandwich did fall apart a bit as you ate it though. The actual chicken was a bit disappointing. It's chicken thigh when I usually like breast for sandwiches. And it wasn't crispy at all. All of the breading was soft. The rice rolls were different. I've never had them served like that where the plain rolls are rolled up and cut into pieces. Then they put the hoisin and sesame sauce on top with the meat and fish balls. The rolls eat pretty bland since the sauce doesn't get into the center. That being said the brisket and fishball flavors were amazing.
First, a caveat: I didn't grow up with Hong Kong cafe (茶餐廳, cha chaan teng) nostalgia, and I'm also biased. Ever since Double Chin Restaurant in Chinatown closed (may she rise again), I've been on a mission to find a worthy fried chicken bolo bao. My friend and I trudged into Rubato on a cold, rainy day, hoping for a replacement. Spoiler alert: we did not find one. We ordered four items: rice rolls with curry fish balls, an egg custard lava bun, Ovaltine French toast, and the fried chicken bolo bao. The rice rolls were mild but fine, topped with enough cilantro and scallion to keep it interesting. The lava bun was hot, gooey, and did its job. (GOOD JOB, LAVA BUN!) The Ovaltine French toast? Eh, it aite. But here's the heartbreak: the chicken bolo bao. The chicken wasn't hot; it had that "sat around" feeling. And the bun? Just a dressed-up brioche, missing that true bo lo bao magic. A brioche bun with a crackly top is not a bo lo bao, my dudes. In short, everything was edible, but nothing made me want to come back. (It's not like watching like a hawk for an empty seat and swooping in the moment one opens up is any fun.) The chicken deserved better.
My husband and I stayed in Quincy for a wedding a couple of weeks ago. We had a couple of free hours during the day so we decided to check out the area nearby our hotel. After doing a quick TikTok search, I was prompted to try out this chicken sandwich from Rubato. We walked over and actually missed it on the street because it's so tiny. After realizing it, we turned around and to our surprise, there were several people inside eating and others waiting. This must be a good sign. We walked in and it was the most casual, laid-back establishment. The green color scheme and plants gave it a more earthy vibe, which I absolutely loved. Since we didn't necessarily know what to order we decided to split the fried chicken bolo. When I tell you, I have not stopped thinking about that sandwich since I ate it, I'm not kidding. It was absolutely delicious. My husband, who was resistant to even going in the first place, kept telling everyone around town about it. We will not skip a beat when in Quincy next to visit this establishment. Thanks for an awesome experience.
My third visit here, and the food continues to impress. The flavors are always consistent. I usually order the Hong Kong-style lemon tea along with a few other items, and this time I went with the fried chicken bolo bao. It was pretty busy when I ordered, so they waited until I found a seat before making the sandwich to keep it fresh. About 15 minutes later, it arrived. The sandwich looked great--juicy, well-seasoned chicken on a soft, fluffy bun. My only complaint was the slaw, which didn't have much flavor. I was hoping for a bit more acidity to balance the sweetness of the bun, but overall it was still a solid sandwich. Just a heads up: it's a small spot with very limited seating.
The hype is real, the chicken bolo was Crispy and full of flavor while being incredible moist on the inside. It's more of a takeout space than a sit down but service was very prompt and the food was super fresh when we got it.
I had been wanting to visit Rubato for a while but when I noticed Chef Laurence was replicating his dishes from that week's episode of Top Chef, I knew I had to go for it. On my first visit, my partner and I had the catfish sando and a bao filled with pork. The sandwich had a great texture. The fish was crispy from the outside but juicy and tender from the inside. The honey mayo was delicious and added a different flavor profile, and the bao on the sando had leather britches (dried beans from the south) which added flavor and complexity. With Boston being a huge seafood city, I hope this becomes a staple in the future. Although I'd love it even more if there was a spicy sandwich option, yeah it's the Mexican in me! This week, we came looking for the cheung fun quartet but (no surprise) the place was buzzin and the dish sold out. Luckily, they still had some of the other rice roll dishes so we tried the beef brisket cheung fun. And let me tell you, it lives up to the reputation. The brisket was so juicy and tender, and the rice rolls were great. We coupled this with the chili chicken polo bao, which is epic. The top of the bread was sweet and reminds me a little of Mexican sweet bread. The chicken (just like the fish the week before) was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender in the inside. I'm not sure what the mayo/sauce was, but it was pretty tasty. My partner had the chili tofu and, obviously, I had to try a little bit of it. Unexpectedly, the tofu turned out to be one of our favorite things. You may be noticing a trend here but it was perfectly crispy on the outside and spicy but nice and tender in the inside. We shared a spicy cucumber salad which was both refreshing but had a nice kick to it. I think we got excited and over ordered, but looking at the bright side, we have delicious leftovers to take home. The service is very quick, even though it's busy. Chef Laurence is very friendly and greets all guests. I was lowkey star-struck when he said "welcome back" and remembered us from last week. We're super fans of Rubato and will keep coming back to sample more of the menu!
We have been rooting for our hometown hero, Chef Laurence, this whole season of Top Chef. We were excited when we found out he would be serving the dishes he cooked each week on Top Chef at Rubato, and the first one we got to try was the fried catfish sandwich with sourwood honey mayo, and with fresh baked bread with leather britches inside (southern beans that are hung up to dry). The ingredients he incorporated were such a great homage to the Carolinas, where this season of Top Chef is taking place. We also tried other regular menu items, on that and other visits. The char siu bun had great flavor and was stuffed with meat. I think I may have tasted some star anise? My favorite so far has been the chili tofu, just because I'm a sucker for tofu (was a vegetarian for a number of years), and because the tofu was perfectly and completely fried, great for absorbing the chili goodness. Also tried the chunky cucumber salad and the brisket rice noodles. My Texan boyfriend whole heartedly approved of the tender brisket. I enjoyed it too! We also really liked the Hong Kong tea and the lemon tea (good to the last drop- I even ate the pieces of lemon inside). Almost forgot, a colleague recommended the bolo bao, and it did not disappoint. My boyfriend loved the fried chicken bolo bao, and I also enjoyed the few bites I had. Careful, it's a little messy. I walked out with sauce on my cheek, smh. My boyfriend said the bread reminded him of pan dulce- I totally agree with him. It has a similar sugar crusty top as a Mexican concha. When that fell off a little and was left for the end, my boyfriend happily finished it off, saying it was the best part. We wish Chef Laurence success at the Top Chef Finale. we are happy his restaurant is so close to us. Also recently learned Rubato is sponsoring a family event for a local nonprofit, BCNC. It's awesome that he cooks such great food, and that his restaurant is embedded in and supportive of the local Quincy community.
Small shop you can get into to enjoy some good food. I got their chicken sandwich which looks amazing, but it isn't something I'd try again. I've tried many different chicken sandwiches and a lot outperformed compared to this one. For what the place is I would give it a solid 4 stars. I may go back to try their other foods which seemed more appealing in a home cooked meal sense.
I've heard amazing reviews about this spot so I was super excited to try this spot. The space is pretty small with limited seating so definitely better to go for takeout if you can. The service was also pretty quick so nothing to complain about. I absolutely loved the fried chicken bolo bao. Even though it was a complete mess to eat, I think they nailed the sauce and texture of the fried chicken and the flakiness of the pineapple bun. I also ordered a hong kong milk tea and it was solid with the strong tea flavor.
I stopped by Rubato while traveling and I was so glad I did. This unassuming cafe has some amazing food. There is very limited seating within the cafe so be sure to plan accordingly. Some other patrons were kind and made space for us to sit. The staff were friendly and attentive. I had the fried chicken bolo, it was sweet and savory and not a combination I thought would work, but it did. If I am in the area I will definitely be stopping by again!
Amazing food made by amazing people who care. The most slept on and underrated item btw is the spam bolo. It's most certainly one of god's greatest gifts to humankind. This place is legit and I should know because I'm married to a chef. read more

Our first visit during Rubato's opening weekend was alright, so I'm glad that this second time around was truly a great experience! My partner and I ordered a cha siu bao, fried chicken bolo, Rubato sampan congee, beef brisket cheung fun, lava egg yolk Hong Kong french toast, and hot Hong Kong milk tea - TASTE: 4/5 - the chai siu hit the spot, and the sesame slaw was a great complement to the fried chicken. The dried scallops and peanuts were lovely in the congee, especially w the add-ons of white pepper, green onion, and cilantro, and the beef brisket was full of deep flavor to contrast the cheung fun. The french toast tasted super indulgent w the lava egg yolk filling and, finally, the hot HK milk tea was phenomenal and one of the highlights of the whole meal! TEXTURE: 5/5 - the cha siu bao was perfectly fluffy, and the bolo bao was soft against the crispy fried chicken. To me, the warmth and fullness of congee is always comforting and you can't go wrong w smooth (and slippery!) steamed rice rolls. The condensed milk and cookie crumb topping on the french toast was chef's kiss! PRICE: 5/5 - I think the prices are really reasonable, our subtotal was around $40 SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - perfect lunch portions for us SERVICE: 5/5 - we ordered in-person at ~12:30pm on a Friday and got our food much quicker than I expected. The owner was also welcoming and friendly! ATMOSPHERE: 4/5 - I appreciate the HK style and decor TAKEOUT: 4/5 - the takeout containers were sturdy and appeared to be paper-based, though not sure if compostable PARKING: 3/5 - can sometimes be hit or miss on Hancock St. I was lucky to get a free, 2-hour parking spot across the street read more

Stop by Rubato today for lunch and the place was buzzing with steady customer. I ordered salt and pepper tofu, sesame and hoisin cheung fun, char siu bolo and sweeten cold soy milk. All were so good. I'd definitely order them again in the future. The cold soy milk was not too sweet and thick. Just the way i like it. The char siu bolo was the bomb. Salt and pepper tofu with rice was excellent too.. read more

been back a numerous of times and always good. i love the green detail on the window. gives it such a vibe and remind me of my hometown. always have to order the lava egg yolk french toast when i come. the lava ooze is satisfying everytime. also that egg yolk (?) crumble is chefs kiss. i'll be honest -- the beef brisket cheurng fun was a bit underseasoned. wish they had chili oil also, they stopped making all bolo bao sandwiches and rice plates close to closing time so go early if you want to try those. read more

Nice dainty HK cafe located in Quincy with lots of variety! I must admit the bolo bao was underwhelming (little dry). The cha siu filling was decent, using real pork chunks. The fried chicken bolo was suppose to be the star but I found it average at best, but the cole slaw on it was fantastic. HK milk was very authentic and so was the soy milk. Laurence the owner was super nice and the cafe was clean and trendy. read more

Delicious and unassuming cafe-restaurant in Quincy serving drive worthy HK cuisine! We came on a Sunday around 10:30 (opens at 10AM Sun i believe) and it was already packed. Menu is largely displayed on their wall and anything out of stock is crossed off for convenience. We ordered a spread - S&P chicken plate, fried chicken bolo bao, beef brisket cheung fun, char sui bao, HK milk tea and an iced lemon tea. Everything was superb, our favorites being the S&P chicken and the drinks! The food is admittedly pricey but the flavors are worth the occasional splurge. Will have to try the lava yolk bao or french toast soon! Service is super quick, not much seating but the vibes are nice if you get to eat indoors + it's easy to do takeout too! read more
I grew up stopping by Contempo Bakery regularly to grab me and my dad some churng fun so it is so great to see the owner's son and his wife take over the spot. It holds so many memories since my dad has passed away. There's tons of Cantonese food all over the Boston and the surrounding surburbs but the HK style cafe has been missing. I am Cantonese and love this style of food and have been sad to see this lacking in the area.... so Rubato made me even more excited for this reason. I have only stopped by once but the food was delectable. Portions may seem small and prices may seem high.. but the quality is amazing and you can't find this kind of food as I mentioned. Don't let the quantity hold you back. - Curry fishballs were out of this world. So flavorful and umami... I could eat seven of these orders at once. There are only four whole fishballs but it is absolutely worth the price. I licked every drop of sauce. - Brisket churng fun (rice rolls) are soooo fresh. Get the scallion, cilantro, and Sriracha. Again, small portion but so fulfilling. The brisket is not all fat or lean beef - just the right amount of each for me. - Butter bolo is SO good. I didn't even think I liked bolo baos all that much. A thicker bolo cut horizontally with a fat slab of butter tucked in. - The iced HK style milk tea and the yuen yeung both lacked sweetness (despite asking for sweet) but tasted just like home. Easy fix adding sugar if needed. My family's house is dangerously close to Rubato... I will absolutely be a regular. So grateful to have this new addition in town. I wish I could've ordered this for my dad, he would've been so excited to try their sampan congee. read more

As someone who tries to find the best local fried chicken sandwiches wherever I go, I can confidently say Rubato's fried chicken bolo is now my absolutely favorite local chicken sandwich. The chicken is flavorful, tender, crunchy, and crisp. The coleslaw-topping has good crunch and flavor but is not overpowering. And the bolo bao (pineapple bun) that holds everything together??? -- Y'ALL. Run, don't walk. I haven't tried other menu items yet from Rubato, but mark my words, I will be back soon. Ordered the following along with my review: Hot milk tea - it does taste like authentic Hong Kong style but less strong Lava egg yolk bun - excellent with runny salty egg yolk inside, much better than some of the dim sum restaurants', but be careful when eating it because it gets messy Ji cheung fun - quite smooth and thin, sesame sauce is very flavorful Curry fishball - not bad but 4/$5 seems a little bit pricy read more

I have been following their story on Instagram and been dying to eat here since they opened. All the hype you have been hearing and seeing (like them getting sold out every single day) is TRUE and so well deserved. The food is amazing!! Everything from the buns to the sauces are made in house and you can taste that in every bite. The service was great. In spite of the long lines, the orders were coming in fast and the cashier was super nice and helpful and so were the other staff members. All the dishes are appropriately priced IMO. Here is a quick run down of what we ordered: *Fried Chicken Bolo Bao: Perfectly crispy and juicy chicken, Tangy slaw, delicious sauce and the most perfect Bolo Bao = match made in heaven. The way they cooked the chicken is no less than magic. It was crispy and fried yet felt light and every bite with the pillowy light bun made our 50 minute drive to the restaurant worth it! *Butter Bolo: So the bolo bao paired perfectly with the chicken, but it is so good that it deserves to be eaten just with butter. These buns are light, soft, and airy, with an extra crispy, buttery, and sugary crust. Still drooling just thinking about them and I have a feeling I am going to dream about them too!! *Cucumber Salad: crunchy cucumber with this perfectly spicy dressing that was made in sesame oil. Was a perfect and refreshing side to the other buttery fried dishes ;) *Lava Egg Yolk French Toast: My husband is a french toast snob and he said this is one of the best french toasts he has had in a very long time. It ticked off all his must haves- crispy on the outside, ooey gooey on the inside, should have enough flavor and shouldn't need any additional sweetener. PERFECTO!! The best part is in spite of having such a successful opening, the entire team here at Rubato is humble and very open to their customers suggestions. They are kind, generous and go out of their way to make sure the customer is well taken care of. And this is such a big sign of a successful business. These qualities along with some kick-ass food is going to take the team to new heights of success. Husband and I drove about 50'ish minutes to eat here and you better believe, we are doing it again next weekend. read more

I tried Rubato for the first time to get their Big Red Bao in celebration of the Lunar New Year. It was simply amazing. I also got their Cha Siu Bao which may be the best I've had in the area. We actually went the very next day to get more of the Cha Siu Bao but it was sold out. We'll definitely be back! The place is tiny but we were taking ours out anyway so that wasn't a concern. We plan to try many more menu items and are so glad we found this place. The team is super friendly and helpful. Great experience overall! read more

When I first heard of Rubato opening in Quincy, I thought it would become my new go-to. There aren't many HK cafes around so I was really excited that a new spot was opening. As many others may have mentioned, the price is definitely what stuck out to me first. HK cafes are typically known to be very affordable and cheap while providing quality home-y comfort meals. Rubato is a more hip and modern take on a classic HK cafe. And with that, comes higher prices (understandably!) I think if the portions were slightly larger, it would help justify the price of the food. I had spent around $85 for 4 people and we were all left still feeling hungry. The quality of the food is definitely there. You can tell the ingredients are fresh and clean but when considering all factors (cost, portion, taste), it felt like a very pricey average meal. I loved the concept of the bolo bao chicken sandwich and it tasted great but it was so tiny for the price. The rice rolls were okay, similar situation where the beef brisket was delicious but it was almost $10 and came with 3 small pieces of beef. Sadly, I felt the same for all the other food items I tried. I think the one item that I would come back for is the lava egg yolk french toast. I thought this dish was unique, absolutely delicious, and worth the price. It was a great take on classic HK flavors. read more

I've been meaning to try this place out ever since they opened. Walking in at almost noon the place was packed with people. The people working there are very friendly while you watch them work to fulfill orders. It took us about 10-15 minutes to wait for my order Drinks: 2/5 I ordered a hot and cold ying yang, a hot soybean drink. Unfortunately, all the drinks tasted a bit watered down and quite bland. Spam bolo bao: 5/5 I would say this was probably one of my favorite things out of all that I ordered. The bolo bao was fresh and soft and blended well with the egg and spam. Cha siu & lava baos: 3/5 these were OK, but I felt that the dough part felt a bit denser than what I'm used to. Sampan congee: 3/5 good flavor, but small portion and lacked ingredients despite all the toppings. Curry fishball churng fun: 4/5 churng fun roll was soft and had great texture. Curry fishball was spicy and had good flavor. I just wish the order came with more fishballs instead of only 4. read more

I just left this place 10 minutes ago and had to write a review. Im visiting Boston and had this on my list: and WOW it did not disappoint. this was a good comfort food. we did get a regular char siu bao but guess it didn't make it in the picture. we think the prices are a bit overpriced. but most of the common food like the Congee, Cheng Fun and the baos are pre-made and were there ready. the combinations they had for the Cheng Fun and the Congee came out good. fyi its a small restaurant with a bench seating by the window and no restroom. read more

Went here for the first time, and had an absolutely delicious meal! The pork and century egg congee was a perfect gateway meal for someone like me who hasn't tasted century egg before; very subtle, complimentary flavors and a delightful warm meal on a cold day. The cha siu bao was fluffy and savory, I highly recommend it! The lava egg French toast is sweet and salty, very indulgent and extremely delicious. I also got to try the fried chicken: super crispy and juicy. The cold milk tea was a refreshing accompaniment to everything, if you're looking to try something other than coffee. And if you, like me, don't see the fuss about soy milk in general, prepare to have your mine blown by the housemade soy milk here. Warm, nutty, and lightly sweet - it's a game-changer! If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and go to Rubato. I'll definitely be back! read more

I love little spots like this: no frills, good food, great prices, quaint! The food here definitely took me back to my childhood: the chueng fun, the baos, the congee, and that HK style toast! The place is small, not many seats but great with a friend or two for a quick bite. You just order at the front and they call your number when the food is ready. Super friendly staff and quick service but the food is so fresh! Between the two of us, we got one pork (cha sui) bao, a bowl of the congee with century egg (got all the toppings), the brisket cheung fun, the crispy chicken bolo bao (this is a modern twist with the fried chicken), egg yolk HK french toast, and unsweetened homemade soy milk. Everything was delicious! The cheung fun texture, fresh and soft and the brisket cooked so well, it fell apart! The fried chicken bolo bao was delicious, the chicken, tender and juicy (yes, they used thighs, of course). One of my fave was the lava egg yolk HK french toast - it oozed with deliciousness (why can't I share a video - I caught the ooze on camera)! I am not much of a sweet tooth but I will eat a whole one of that toast any day - what diet? After that satisfying lunch, we ordered two more cheung fun (the hoisin and sesame sauce and curry fish balls - both SO GOOD TOO) and some baos. Don't worry, I will be back even though we pretty much ate through the whole menu already : read more

This is a very busy small business shop. I was lucky I ordered in advance as there was a long line there. There isnt really any seating/tables, so i suggest taking to go. The HK Milk Tea was deliciously authentic, I finished it before I even got home. The pork chop rice was very good, but i wouldnt recommend the fried chicken bolo bao. That was only ok. This is the best(only?) legit HK style cafe in Boston for sure. Wish they had Tong Sum Fun too! (2nd Photo taken in my home not restaurant) read more
