Forgive me, rootdown DIA. I have eaten your gastronomical treats, I have slipped your savory bites down my pie hole, my taste buds have tingled with your tasty treats, but, alas, I am remiss for not tapping my keyboard and crafting a worthy review sooner. I have taken almost every immediate member of my family to rootdown DIA when we are passing through or even when Denver has been the destination. I will look to book my connections and layovers at DEN just to dine at rootdown DIA.
rootdown has become very well known amongst foodies. It is a bastion of quality organic and home-grown ingredients blended with aplomb to create a selection of cuisine the likes of which I have never seen at an airport and I have eaten at too too many airports. Their breadth of vegetarian faire is to be applauded. The knowledgeable, accommodating, and engaging staff are always welcoming, from the hosts to the servers, to management who seems to actually enjoy walking the floor and chatting with the weary travelers grateful to have a scrumptious meal in more-than-comfortable seating away from the fast food hawkers, snack food purveyors, and run-of-the-mill airport fooderies.
So, why now? Why am I finally laying down the pixels for rootdown DIA?
Monday, my wife, my 10 year old grandson from my middle daughter, and I flew into Denver from ONT for the birth of grandson #2 by our eldest daughter. This was to be her first child. A picture perfect birth following our four hour drive in the falling snow (!) to the hospital. My wife planned to stay for two weeks and help out with the new family member. Wednesday morning, I packed up the elder grandson and we headed back to DEN to catch a flight home. Of course, once we got settled in at DEN, we headed to rootdown DIA for "lunner".
Upon our arrival, we were enthusiastically greeted by the hostess. I explained that I was a "return offender" for dining at rootdown DIA and she went out of her way to seat us at a window table. As soon as we sat down, my Grandson started asking questions about what he saw outside ... "What's that Pappa?" "What does that do, Papa?" "Why is that doing that, Pappa?" Having been raised around airplanes I had the answers and we had a wonderful time, never pressured to eat and run so the staff could flip the table!
I had the veggie burger. An in-hourse hand-crafted blend of beans and spices that result in a unique tangy taste with a pleasant firm texture served with avocado, arugula, jalapeño jam, curry lime sauce. My grandson enjoyed the Never Ever Beef Burger assembled with tender belly bacon, cheddar cheese, and in-house crafted sriracha mayonnaise. Both sandwiches are served on killer pretzel buns and with a side of sweet potato waffle fries. I was amazed that he put it all away! AND ASKED FOR DESSERT! CRAZY!!!
I had never had dessert at rootdown DIA. Our server, Christina, recommended the strawberry rhubarb shortcake served with whipped cream and candied ginger anglaise ... oh my. An explosion of dessert yumminess went off in my mouth! The short cake was light and fluffy, it reminded my of a giant sugar cookie! The rhubarb strawberry came home with a refreshing tanginess that blended perfectly with the creamy sweetness of the scratch-made whipped cream.
Unbelievable ... as always.
Consistently solid flavor party!
A value packed quality meal for just a few dollars more than many "fast food" vendors at the airport.
A respite for the traveller.
Will I eat there again. I have, do, and can't wait to dine there again. read more
