I have been a loyal Sam's No. 3 customer since Havana days. Chatted regularly with Patrick over the years. I have NEVER, gotten a terrible plate of food. And only a handful less than absolutely delicious. This is my first time at this new downtown location. Today, devastatingly, I was handed a bowl of crusty, burnt, mushy, overcooked, soupy, potato pan bottom (NO potato chunks to cut or bite into at all) with no texture- slop veg mix. my dog would love. Didn't feel fresh nor the typical incredible breakfast I've had over the decades. Typically what I get is a decent size pile of fresh thick cut panfried potatoes with yummy fresh sautéed veg, cheese & topped with a bit of incredible thick sumptuous Sam's3 veg green chili. When waiter asked, I was honest. I did not ask for it to be taken off the bill, but the server removed it without me asking. We tipped 20% of what we ordered, because the server served 2 persons, regardless what the kitchen put out. And I believe in living wages- that waiters don't get. So.... The additional question, as a white woman, who has always been served incredible food with Anglo friends/family over 20 years 100's of visits. I came today with my fullblood Lakota husband and I was served basically breakfast stew --- so, either there is a problem in the kitchen, that the amazing owners of a multigenerational amazing restaurant need to know.... OR - there's a race issue. My husband said his wasn't very good, small portion & sausage was super dry ... but he did eat everything as he was starving. It took me years of living in Denver to finally try Sam's No. 3. It's exactly what you'd want from a classic diner. The menu has so many options, the portions are generous, and the prices are really reasonable. I ordered the pancakes, eggs, and sausage, and everything was exactly what I was hoping for. One thing that really surprised me was how good I felt afterward. Breakfast food usually leaves me feeling heavy or not so great, but I had no issues at all after eating here. Wow super glad we stopped in for breakfast. This was a great diner style restaurant. Largest selection of food I've seen on any menu. Service was fast and attentive food came out quick. Came here on the recommendation of our local family members. Took the RTD train downtown and walked about 1mile to this location. We were seated by the hostess at about 9:45 am and noticed that we missed the specials that ended at 9. No matter, Cody was pleasant as she interacted with us and got our beverages and gave us some time to decide on our meal. Many breakfast items and that is what we chose. A little more punch would've helped, and the creamy horseradish definitely should be part of the standard setup--it made a difference. Now my dining partner... he went big. He had the sMacdown Burrito, an oversized burrito loaded with mac & cheese, tots, eggs, and chorizo. He slid me a sample, and I've gotta say--that thing brought the flavor. I walk by this location often during the work week and it's always busy, but service is super fast which is a rare treat in Denver. The location is pretty central downtown which is convenient, but not an area with a scenic view. You could say the people-watching here is interesting. I ordered the veggie stacker with eggs over easy - this is not a meal you eat with your eyes first, but if you're not shallow it's not bad. We arrived around 5:45, no wait. TVs on the walls, lots of space, fun environment. We started with the cheese curds, which were ok. BTW, when you order food, it comes out right away. For our entrees, my husband ordered the mini burrito and cheese enchilada, he enjoyed it. I ordered the Hot Beef Sandwich which became a religious experience for me. I grew up in Iowa. Hot Beef Sandwiches are second only to the tenderloin where I'm from. Sam's No 3 has come the closest I've ever tasted to an Iowa HBS. We came for brunch and overall had a good experience. I ordered the huevos rancheros--great flavors, yummy beans, and my eggs were cooked perfectly. The only downside was that the tortilla on the bottom was extremely soggy, but thankfully they brought a warm tortilla on the side, which helped a lot. My daughter had the burger and said it was cooked medium-rare exactly as she requested and she loved it. We also tried the chili fries, and those were a hard pass for us. They're served in a bowl and ended up very soggy--these might work better served on a flat plate. The chicken and waffles were ok. The chocolate shake was filling but also our daughter got the half size serving. Our server offered this as an option when we told her the 30 ounce would be too large. Nice of her. Service was excellent. I don't remember our server's name, but she was patient, kind, and very service-oriented. The wait for a table was about 50 minutes, but they use Yelp's waitlist system, which tells you exactly how many people are ahead of you, making it much easier to plan and gauge the wait. Sam's No 3 is an old school diner with counter service as well as tables and covered out door seating in downtown Denver. It is near the 16th street mall. The area is pretty shady due to the homeless people, but generally safe to walk. The interior is somewhat 50s style diner kind of like Ruby's. The menu is extensive not only having breakfast, lunch, and dinner items, but also a huge selection under each category. On our visit Sean gave us excellent service. Many of their items come in large portions and may be shared. Not sure about the parking situation down town. We got the turkey club with tots on our visit. It was big enough to share and get full. There is a variety of bread to choose from, but we got marble rye. Sour dough was one of the other options. The bread may have been toasted but was soft. Large amount of turkey and fresh lettuce and tomato. Good amount of tomato. Overall the sandwich was very good and we would get it again. However, Morts Deli and Paula's Pancake House in CA make a superior comparable sandwich. If in town there, try those places. If in Denver, Sam's is a good place to go. Definitely will be back when in town and recommend you give them a try. read more
