Went to West Saloon & Kitchen for dinner after a Rockies game and ended up trying the French onion lamb sliders and the elk meatball linguine. Both sounded different from the usual downtown menu options, so we figured we'd give them a shot. The sliders were rich but not overly heavy, and the onions added a lot without overpowering the lamb. I actually liked the linguine more than I expected since the meatballs were tender and the pasta wasn't drowning in sauce. Service stayed consistent through the night even after the dinner crowd picked up. Our server checked on timing for the kitchen and kept drinks refilled without hovering around the table too much. Picked here to try Rocky Mountain Oysters $16.5. A local delicacy, the "oysters" are actually cow testicles and a cattle rancher food. The oysters here are chopped small and very seasoned, so you taste more of the batter. No gameyness (tho my tolerance for gameier meat is high). The osyster were chewy after u get past the batter, and mostly tasted lemony (before squeezing the sliced lemons). I did absolutely enjoyed the Peruvian sweet peppers they threw on top. First time having them! Not only are they cool looking, they do taste sweet with a peppery smell! Chicken Fried Elk $21 The Elk patty here is more tender than expected and tasted like a mix between pork and beef. It went well with the savory, mashed, skin on potato on the bottom, and the over easy eggs. The dish overall, however, was too salty. Service was friendly. Note - there's a 3.5% percent surcharge and it is stated on the menu itself... Don't think it is avoidable by paying cash bc part of the reason for it is to compensate staff that don't get tipped. I came back to try the fancy $20 for 8 big Campfire Wings and a few other things I missed last time. The wings were cooked right, and the BBQ sauce was thick and proper. I wish I had tried the Hot wings though because these were mild and the dill ranch dressing was watery and thin. I also ordered a cup of Colorado Chili AND a cup of Pork Green Chili. The Colorado was standard and mild. Fresh, but I needed to add salt for flavor , which is fine. The Green Chili was thick and had more flavor, but this review is a note to my future self to not order these chili's again. Sat down and waited for a server for about 5 minutes. A group who was seated a couple minutes after us were greeted by a server, ordered drinks, received their drinks, and ordered their food. All while we waited. I talked to the host who assured us a server was coming. We heard another server apologize to their guests about the food taking a while, and we saw another guest come up to a server asking for water. So we figured they were probably having service issues. I walked in without a reservation and was seated right away. The staff was really friendly and we had a bit of small talk before I ordered my food. I got the short rib stragonoff, which was recommended to me as a customer favorite. I liked it - the meat was very tender and had a good ratio to the pasta and sauce. One thing to note: this restaurant automatically added a restaurant impact surcharge of 3.5% to my bill without my knowledge. I forgot his name but he said he's usually behind the bar but he picked up this extra shift. Lucky us. He was very informative about the area and gave us some tips of what to do. We ate here before seeing a show at the Paramout. I loved this place before when it was Marlowe's (MANY year ago!) so maybe I went with high expectations? The building itself is beautiful so there is a star for that and the cowboy art on the wall. We ordered some whiskey drinks that did not dissapoint. The Peacemaker is very booz forward, while the Big Blue Bear is milder. Our service was nice and quick. We decided to start with an app of Artichoke dip. It came out in a skillet, but was not very hot. The cheese on top was not melted and I had to use a knife and fork to cut it up rather than dip bread in it. It was tasty all the same but would have been much better and more enjoyable had it been thorougly cooked. This put us off a bit, so we opted to skip the entree and go straight for dessert. The Burbon Peach Crumble is also served in a skillet, and - you guessed it - also lukewarm. It made for a very dense hard to spoon out experience. If it had been hot like one would expect in a skillet, I believe it would have been better. The photos on their website look really great and the two dishes I mentioned look like they are cooked much better than what we recevied. Maybe we just had an off night, I am not sure. Great spot - especially before seeing a show next door at the paramount theater. The waitress even asked what time the show was to make sure everything was timed perfectly. Again, I really wanted to like this place more because it's conveniently located in DT Denver, has a really nice theming and ambience (like classic Old West cowboys, saloon, and such). There's some vintage pieces of decor and furniture there. A mix of different textiles, decor on the walls, wallpaper, etc. Definitely wander around to the restroom to get the experience. Service was friendly and decent, despite the lunch rush. Took a bit of time to pay, but it wasn't too bad. We got the: 1) Rocky Mountain Oysters: -It's bull testicles. I've had this, but Chinese style before. These are deep fried, a bit like popcorn chicken or calamari. It comes with spicy tomato and creamy horseradish dipping sauces. -It's a must if you go to Colorado I'm sure since there's not a lot of restaurants that offer this dish in California at the very least. -It's mostly just chewy breading. I know it's expected for this cut of meat, but with how much you get and the eating enjoyment, it's not worth it. Just ok. What I liked best were the small chilies that came with it. Apparently it's a Colorado classic. So that was the benefit of ordering this dish. 2) Pork Green Chili: -Hatch chiles, seared pork, jalapenos, sour cream, cilantro garlic, and served with flour tortillas. -It's a solid chili. Slight slow burn spiciness with the chiles and jalapenos. The pork is nice and moist and absorbed the flavor of the chili very nicely. 3) Pioneer Meat Loaf: -All natural beef and pork blended with roasted veggies, oats, and Guinness stout. It's finished with an apricot glaze and covered with mushroom demi sauce. It comes with potatoes au gratin and crispy fried green beans. -Meat loaf was moist but a tad salty, even with the slight sweetness of the apricot glaze and the earthiness of the mushroom. The green beans were crispy but didn't have that much flavor so this was also sauce fodder for us. Potatoes were yummy though. 4) Elk Meatball Linguine: -It's 3 oversized meatballs made with 50/50 elk and beef blend, mushroom cream sauce, linguine, and some toasted bread. -This just tastes like a somewhat more blander beef stroganoff. Not creamy and not enough sauce. Bread tastes fine, but this added carb added to the dryness when there's not enough sauce to dip it into. We ended up dipping it into the chili instead. -Dish sounds exotic, but I'd skip it. I'm allergic to alcohol so I skipped that and can't comment on it. Food was just okay, if you don't have the option of traveling faraway from the downtown and you want this old Western theming, it works. Just wish the food quality and taste was just a bit up to par more. read more

What an incredible experience!!! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly and seated right away. Our waiter, Cameron, was absolutely fantastic attentive, friendly, and always making sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling intrusive. One of the highlights of our visit was getting to meet Bill. Since it was our first time here, he took the time to connect with us and made us feel genuinely welcomed. What stood out most was that this restaurant doesn't feel like they're trying to rush guests in and out. You can tell they truly care about quality, both in their food and in the experience they provide. The food was amazing, the portions were generous, and we even left with leftovers to enjoy later. To top it all off, Bill surprised us with a huge slice of carrot cake on the house, which was such a thoughtful gesture and the perfect ending to an already wonderful meal. Great food, outstanding service, and an atmosphere that makes you feel like more than just another customer. One thing that my group of friends really wanted to try on this Denver trip was Rocky Mountain Oysters. I can't explain why aside from the urge to try new things. We were looking at Buckthorn but their hours did not fit into our schedule so we landed on a lunch at West Saloon & Kitchen. First, the Rocky Mountain Oysters. You can look them up if you don't know what they are. Some of my friends thought they have the texture of a fried oyster. I thought they had some texture and not much flavor - just a vehicle for eating sauce. By no means a bad dish, but I don't think it's something that is worth extra effort getting to. The other dishes we enjoyed were Elk Meatballs, Cast Iron Chicken Pot Pie, Short Rib Stroganoff, and Colorado Chili. All in the grouping of hearty, comfort food. Most were slightly under seasoned, but nothing that couldn't be fixed at the table. Stopped here as it was close to our hotel and the meals hit the spot. Husband ordered a steak salad which was exactly what he wanted and I had the king salmon which was packed full of nutrients and very tasty. This is right by the Paramount, so a great option when you're going to a show. We came in on a Friday evening and it was really busy, but we made reservations so we were seated right away. This wasn't advertised that we saw, but we did learn that on Fridays they have $9 old-fashioneds, which is a great deal. I had ordered something else before I knew that, so I do think they should advertise the specials. Our server couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. They have a large menu with some unique items. I got a bacon cream cheeseburger, which was delicious. We did have to wait a while for our drinks and one of my friends had to leave half of hers behind because we needed to get to the show. They put a 3.5% restaurant impact charge on the bill. My bill was $43 which included the burger, two old-fashioneds, tax, and that service fee. read more
