The server was very knowledgeable about all of the drinks and she encouraged us to order different things based on our personal likes even though she was fairly new serving at Union Lodge. A world-class, old school bar with a speakeasy atmosphere. The cocktails are amazing! American drinks made according to original recipes from the late 1800s. They don't even carry vodka. Their Old Fashioned is incredible. With only a rinse of simple syrup, the flavors of the whiskey and bitters really come through. Very dry, this is not a sweet drink as found in some bars. The Manhattan is similarly classic. Ice gets special attention here. When not in a rough hewn cube, it is crushed with a wooden mallet in an ice bag. The bartenders are outstanding, amazingly fast considering how complicated it is to make some of the drinks. I like that they speak in loud voices and can be easily heard oven the din. read more

Edit: I really wasn't that busy of a night. My review has zero to do about how "busy" it was and my review does not once have the word "busy" in it. Staff being rude is mentioned. ------ The day staff starts to act like they're better than me and can treat me in ways they would not like to be treated is the day I take a long, who knows until when pause, from that establishment. If you were in a small bar with limited seating and you got there early to get yourself a seat, would you expect a staff member to take your chair from behind you when you were not looking, not sitting, and standing up right at that moment? I think everyone would say "no" to that. At the VERY least use your words and ASK the person who's paying to be there if they do not want their chair anymore before you sneak it from them and hide it in a space behind the bar. It was Kyle, I think. This situation is fair enough game for me to oust. I said, "You took my chair?" And he said "You can ask for it back" -- I'm sorry, Excuse Me?! The asking comes before snatching the chair. I told him "You should ASK before taking it". Imagine if I went to SIT DOWN, when he stole my chair away? And I fell down. Full on embarrassment #1. And #2, what if I got hurt? Seems like nothing until someone gets hurt, right. This business could be in some pretty big trouble from a senseless and inconsiderate act by a staff member. If you can't work in small quarters without frustration and lashing out, don't choose to work in the tiniest cocktail bar in the city of Denver. One could simply schooch the chair over a bit... or choose to say the words "excuse me"...if it is truly in the way to the point it's impeding someone from doing their job. Sometimes, people stand for a few minutes, that doesn't mean they must stand the rest of their time cause they chose to stand for a bit or are leaving/coming from bathroom and hadn't sat back down, yet. NOTE: There is nowhere for customers to go in this place, either!!! I couldn't so much as go to the restroom without getting to second base with everyone I had to pass by to get to the bathroom -- forget about personal space in this bar! I didn't take or move anyone's chair, I had to let the rubs happen cause that's the reality of the space/situation. If the staff doesn't get this, why are customers supposed to? I have TONS of places I can pay $25 for a drink (or much less). And, YES, they are equally just as good. Bougie craft cocktails ain't a new or unique concept. And, yes, $25 cause that's my out of pocket for some of these top tier drinks after tax + tip. read more

I had classic drinks (which is what they specialize in), both the Old Fashioned and Mint Julep. The techniques that they use to craft your drinks allow for the authenticity in taste. Astounding flavors! Came on a random weekday night and was really glad to be able to get a spot. It wasn't too crowded and the bartender wasn't overly inundated. I asked for 2 different kinds of mocktails and the bartender came through! Got a traditional fruity one, tasted like pineapple and coconut and everything a tiki bar would serve. Then I asked for a floral one. And I was so pleasantly surprised! A lot of mocktails taste bitter or disappointing but not here! My husband got something off their seasonal menu and was super pleased with his drink. You can also order off the menu, as many people did and the bartender will make it delicious. RAMOS GIN FIZZ. That's literally all you need to know about this place. We popped in on a Saturday evening and waited about 30 minutes for a table for 3 of us. It's a relatively little bar on the 1st floor of a building, shared with a bakery. What I appreciated about it was that they didn't just let people roam around to try to seat themselves. One of the staff usually chased you down and had you wait out in the lobby to wait for his summons. Still, they were gracious and a few parties that walked in when the place started to calm down were allowed to take seats at the bar. We didn't want to peak early and jump right into the RGF's so we tried some other drinks first - a couple Pineapple Juleps and a Knickerbocker later on. They were stiff but way too tart/dry, like someone left out the simple syrup. Anyway, that led us to finally diving into the RGF's and we never looked back. They were silky smooth and tasty. There were two bartenders making the RGF's and one guy you could tell made at least 100 of them a night. It was fun watching him make them the entire time we were there - some didn't always work out so he would toss them out (nooooo) but the ones he sent out where textbook perfect. A great find for us and a nice way to spend our last evening in Denver. read more

I fell in love with this place on my trip to Denver two years ago and it's now on my agenda every trip back. It's a small place and there may be a wait on a busy night but it's worth it. Classic cocktails can't be beat (they even have a Ramos Gin Fizz on the menu and won't scowl at you if you order one *grin*). My last trip was about Sazeracs and Negroni variations. The selection of amari and whiskies is good though not extensive and, if it isn't too busy, see what secret recipe the bartender on duty that night has up their sleeve. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. It's never that noisy even when full but if you can get a place in the front the seating is more comfortable. But the high tops in the back also make for a nice place to sit and have a conversation with friends. read more

I spent a weekend in Denver and Union Lodge is the bar I chose to check out and I'm happy we did. It's located near the 16th St Mall so parking can be a little challenging depending on the time of day. We were immediately seated on a Sunday night so it was nice there wasn't a wait. We initially chose 2 drinks, the banana hammock and the curry one but both of these had such strong flavors that we were not a fan of. Although the table service was quick, we waited over 30 minutes to get our first drink. This was on a Sunday night however, it was not all the way full and they had two bartenders and a runner. Because of the length of time it took to get drinks, we only ended up getting one each. I ordered Garrick Club Punch. It did lack complexity and a little sweetness. And my husband ordered, Fight Milk which was unique, good flavor and quite strong.
