Came here twice for lunch. Got the crab bisque soup the first time and it was good in the beginning, but then I got halfway through and it was less of a bisque and more of a vegetable soup with crab in it. Second time, I went on burger day and got a cheese burger with the maker's mark BBQ sauce. The sauce was very sweet and you could definitely smell the bourbon in it. I've been to Riptide by the Bay on two separate occasions now, and they do not disappoint! They're always packed, but my party has been able to get seated almost immediately. The seating upstairs is just as nice as downstairs. Their crab cakes were great, and their oysters on the shell were fresh and delicious. Our server the second time we went, Samantha, was really nice, down to earth, and made us feel welcome and taken care of. Went here for a late birthday dinner with some friends. We were able to get a reservation and they were even really accommodating with the toddler that tagged along. But seriously I can not say enough about the food. We ordered from all over the menu and every single one of us was happy and completely stuffed at a decent price. And the service was amazing. Since my favorite crabcake places in Baltimore (that are open after 5:30PM) are all pretty much gone, and I was taking the family downtown for an event, I decided to look up best crabcakes in town as rated by various sites last year. Most were a bit more out of the way, but Riptide was down in Fells Point and I could make the trip work. We drove down and traffic was crazy thanks to a bar crawl in Fells Point. We got to Riptide and the front bar area was PACKED, but a server directed us to the back to go upstairs for a table and all was good. It was not crowded. We told the waiter that we had about an hour to eat and that we were ready to order. To his credit, he did great getting our food out to us. 2 of the party had the crab burgers that they seemed to like, I had the crabcake and a 1/2 pound of steamed shrimp, and my wife had fish and chips. Of all the things ordered, the crab was the worst part. it was mush, no backfin or jumbo lump, and it was bland. The shrimp was fine, the burgers (minus the crab part) were cooked and seasoned well, and the nice piece of cod in the fish and chips were cooked well and not greasy. BUT the whole reason to go was the crab, and it was not worthy of this top 10 rating. I had better from a grocery store. So after not visiting Riptide for a little while we went back in last night and got an unwelcomed surprise, they've changed the menu! It seriously looks like it should be the "specials" menu not the full menu. I really liked going there and I really liked the veggie burger that they HAD but now if you want anything vegetarian your only options are a salad or one of the pasta dishes that they remove the meat from, probably after cooking it all together. We had a marvelous lunch during Restaurant Week. The tempura fried oysters were tender and light. Our second course was fish and chips. They, too, seem to have been dipped in a tempura batter and, according to our waiter, fried in beer. The fish came in an attractive tin bucket atop the French fries. Fries were only fair. Wanted to find a place in the city to get Maryland crabs for Father's Day. Both of us had never been here before but we fell in love with it as soon as we walked in. Riptides is a very cute, small restaurant but even with it being busy I didn't feel crowded during dinner. We ordered the tuna appetizer which was AMAZING, a dozen crabs and oysters on the half shell. Everything was great. Only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars was because they only had small crabs. I've never heard a place that carried smalls so I was nervous to get them but I was surprised by the amount of meat I'd got out of them. All n all I would recommend this place to my friends and family. It's worth checking out. Oh! Our server was great! Very friendly and personable. That's always a plus. read more

Everything about riptide is small. The dining room, the bar, bathroom and most unfortunately the food. The portions were very small. We ordered appetizer, salad and crabs. All of it was small. Our server was great and I would recommend the service here. They have a great menu which blew me away. I ordered the Maryland crab burger (8oz) which came with fries and I ordered a side of sweet potato mash: About the food: The meat they used for the burger reminded me of one of the pre-formed frozen patties you can buy at the store. Additionally, no effort was put in to season it. The crab cake topped on it was great but I felt bad for it to be surrounded by the mediocrity that was the burger. The bun was too buttery. For paying $5 for the sweet potato mash, the serving size was a pittance; I really liked the consistency as it was one of the smoothest tasting mashed potatoes I have had but it lacked the aroma of the anise that the menu promised. Here is why I am giving them 2 stars for my overall experience: 1. All the food did not come out at once. My friend and I were waiting for over 5 minutes while the rest of the table got theirs 2. When my food did come out finally, it was cold. I had it sent back. 3. My sweet potatoes were plated on my friend's dish. He ordered the fish and chips and got my potatoes instead of his chips!!!!! 4. When my burger did finally arrive, it was rare and mooing still. I had clearly asked for medium. At this point I was not going to send the food back for a second time for a multitude of reasons. I would like to return here again in hopes of a better experience. Finally, they should not allow smoking in the breezeway where they seated us. We were in Baltimore for 6 days coming from Los Angeles. We thought the perfect last night at Fells Point will be to eat here. We understood it's a Saturday night (our last night) and the place is busy especially with the jazz festival going on. We got a table outside with my family including my 15 month old baby. They got our orders and the server was really great in explaining the menu to us. However, they forgot to serve us the calamari that we ordered. We got the dip fried shrimp wrap in bacon, fries and the crab cake. They were all okay. Nothing that makes me feel wow. Then the rain came. We thought it will pass but it didn't. When it looks like it wasn't gonna let up. I went inside to talk to the hostess to see if we can finish our food inside since we are halfway done and are getting really soaked. There were 2-3 tables empty and the hostess insisted that they have reservations. Nobody new was coming in due to the heavy rain. Yet, the hostess denied us even though we just needed a dry area to finish our meal. The hostess told us if we can find a table by the alley area then we can take it. Great! A family with a baby and soaked meal. We were able to find a table and our sever helped us move our food. It was cold by then and was just horrible. At that point, we were just waiting for the rain to pass so we could walk out and go back to the hotel. By the time we were done and paid for the awful dinner (and forgotten part of our order).I looked inside and at least 2 of the same tables were still open. If this is how they treat tourists, I'd feel bad for the locals here. My first time in Baltimore and during our last night has ended on this note of bad customer service. read more

My friends and I decided to take a quick road trip for the weekend. We decided to stop in Baltimore and try out some Seleucids seafood and boy were we very pleased with our experience at Riptide by the Bay. The food was amazing and the staff were very polite, personable, helpful and a delight to be around. The manager Ryan also made sure to make us feel comfortable while enjoying that amazing food. We plan to make another day trip just for the food here again. I totally recommend this place to seafood lovers. I have been to Riptide by the Bay twice- one year ago and last night. Both times I have ordered the Mahi Mahi Tacos. One year ago I raved about how wonderful they were- they were perfectly seasoned, aesthetically pleasing, and they tasted fresh. Last night, I paid $13 for grey lumps of fish on stale taco shells. I was very disappointed with my food last night. What happened to the quality over the last year? My friends got the burgers for burger night, which is a great deal. I snuck some of their fries, and they were great. This is the only reason I am giving a 3 Star Review right now (versus a 2). But for a restaurant that advertises it's seafood, they could do much better. The service was good and our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I am not much of a yelper, but would definitely take the time to write this review for others who have a last minute/spur of the moment night out for dinner to reconsider other restaurants in the area first. My husband and I went Labor Day weekend and decided to try this place out. The restaurant didn't look too crowded which we figured everyone was away for the holiday. We were sat at a table right away, however, it took over 10 minutes for anyone to come over and acknowledge us. We finally got water another 10 minutes later. The fried wonton wrap shrimp was overcooked and the 5 shrimp that were prepared were miniscule. That was a disappointing appetizer so I was a little worried about the salad I ordered. I ordered a blackened salmon Caesar salad which was overall pretty good, 4 out of 5 rating. I got a margarita drink which was I thought the best thing in the restaurant that evening. Took my family (all adults) to Riptide By The Bay for lunch and was pleasantly surprised! Had never tried this place before on our many trips to Baltimore and the Fells Point area. Only one minor complaint - the soup needs to be hotter. The sandwiches were all very good, crab burger and Baltimore style shrimp salad wrap. My nieces enjoyed lobster ravioli and steamed crabs. FOOD: We ordered a wide variety of plates and all of our food was good. We enjoyed pretty much our entire meal, except the molten chocolate cake was not molten. There was nothing special and nothing awful about our meals. We ordered the oysters, dumplings, the crab cakes, the lobster tail, the snow crab, the mac/cheese (lobster), and the aforementioned dessert. DRINKS: two drinks ordered, they were good AMBIANCE: Surprisingly busy for a Sunday night, but we were seated immediately. Granted, I also had reservations for a very early dinner when I doubt many people would even eat on a week night. SERVICE: The drinks were slow to come out, but overall since we were not in a rush we were not annoyed. The food came out in a normal time. Stumbled upon Riptide as a second choice as our first wasn't to open until 5p.m. Was looking forward to some great Baltimore seafood. Sorely disappointed! First, their "market price" for appetizer crabcakes were $18!!!! so obviously we passed. Ordered the crab mac n cheese (which was really good), added a crabcake for $6 (no idea why it was cheaper that way... it was barely ok), fish and chips (soggy, soggy, soggy and the fries were drenched in grease), and children's tenders and fries. The fries were so terrible, that my 3 year old (who LOVES fries in any shape or form) wouldn't touch them. They were a grease slick! Just nasty! Granted, the fries were replaced after an extremely long wait, but again greasy. Mind you, our friends who were eating w/ us were having just as a miserable time with their food. They ordered the fish tacos, one order grilled, one battered. They were brought two orders of grilled. They sent one back, FINALLY got the correct order only to have the manager explain that they weren't specific enough to the waitress about their order... Like it was their fault she misunderstood or didn't ask and clarify. Finally get our checks.... manager comp'd us part of our meals which was greatly appreciated and the only reason I give a second star. Irony? Went here on a whim and with the help of other yelp reviews and I am glad we did. Their draft beer selection was awesome. The crab dip was just perfect and our main dishes were well done and very tasty. We did a lot of crab related foods that night and I was not disappointed at all. Also we made a reservation before we went in which made our sitting speedy. The waitress was really good with helping is decide on our meal choices and also very attentive.
