Coming to Annabel Lee Tavern is to experience an Edgar Allen Poe themed restaurant. It's not very big, feels a little crampy, dingy, in a rustic neighborhood you wouldn't think had anything worthwhile. Then you find out about this hole in wall spot. My friend said I had to come here. We did. As soon as we stepped out of the Uber the adventure began. The building is so out dated but the entrance door held its charm. Neon lit Edgar portrait reading from a book his Annabel Lee. Complete with a bouquet of flowers. To the right more words of the writer surrounded with a few tables and chairs for those willing to chill in the cold. Inside was no different. Several crows, skulls everything you'd expect. And a well stocked bar. Many writings on the wall, articles, awards, etc all added to the vibe and theme. And of course dimly lit but you could still read the menu. We were guided to the back for our party of 5, in a corner away from everyone else. That made it easy for us to converse as we perused the menu exclaiming this and that of the dreadful names used and deathly ingredients mixed in. It definitely made it more appetizing. After working all day I was ready for a drink and settled on the To Isadore; gin, lavender syrup, lemon squeeze topped with segura cava. That hit the spot. Unfortunately, I had eaten quite a bit on this trip and forced myself to order the Chef Salad. Nothing more to say there. My wife, though, ordered the seafood lasagna. Never had that and it didn't sound like something I could get into. I was wrong. This is Baltimore. The seafood here is astounding. It was delicious and had to take a couple spoon fulls. My friend ordered the double beef patty burger. I was jealous until he offered me a bite. That was really good too, and juicy. I truly cannot recommend Annabel Lee Tavern enough to anybody because not only are the food and drinks amazing, the service is also so friendly and personable. Our favorite things we've tried are the brussels sprouts, duck fat fries, and crab cakes. Their sandwiches and any desserts are also great! We've tried many of their drinks and all are delicious, strong, and you really can't go wrong with any of them. We love the vibe here because it fits with what we expect from a restaurant inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. Inside is a darker atmosphere with themed decorations everywhere. This is one of our favorite places to come for spooky season, but our recent visit fell short in terms of food quality. Before 2020, we lovedddd ordering the crab cake sandwich, then for awhile it was off the menu, so we were excited to see it back on again! It was pretty good (albeit a tad smaller than in years past), and we love the duck fat fries as usual. But the real downfall was the crab mac and cheese--it was honestly awful. It was basically a bed of seasoned macaroni noodles, topped with cold crab meat and cheese, and baked in the oven. Although the cheese was melted on the top, the crab was cold and there was literally no cheese throughout the noodles. Once the top layer of cheese was gone, it was just basically a plate of cooked macaroni. Also, the cocktail menu (while fun!) does not really deliver on quality. The "To Isadore" was a small champagne glass with a lavender lemon French 75 with a lemon wedge--I feel like the concept is sooo there, but the execution is giving dive bar. I'm a huge Poe fan, so very glad I made the visit while in Baltimore. Parking is on the street, so good luck with that. Ambiance was nice. Service was friendly and prompt. Had been looking forward to dinner there. Food was very disappointing, way too overpriced for the quality, sad to say. Seafood lasagna sounds amazing, right? For $35, it was drowning in overcooked/burned tomato sauce. Too hot to try for about 15 minutes. Couldn't taste the seafood at all. The little side Cesar salad was ok, as was the crunchy garlic bread. Skip the food and just have a beer or cocktail and dine somewhere else. read more

We went on one of our very first dates here and wanted to come back to check out Restaurant Week. If you're looking to eat here, definitely make a reservation! It was packed on a Friday night, with lots of people dining and hanging out at the bar. We were seated quickly and all the staff we encountered were so friendly and attentive, even while dealing with a packed house. The wait time between ordering and receiving was long, but we completely understood as it was the first night of Restaurant Week rush. For cocktails, I had the Goldenbug, which felt like adult Butter Beer and was so yummy and warming. My husband had The Bells, a classic Old Fashioned, and he enjoyed it. Our food came out hot and fresh and it was delicious! The mini nachos were great but definitely could have used some layering for the topping, the bottom chips didn't get much but that didn't stop us from enjoying them all. The duck fat fries were absolutely delicious. My entree was the lemon herb chicken and crab with mashed potatoes and corn and it was amazing. I actually forgot it came with corn (dinner rush) so I took the picture before, but the corn kicked it up a notch! My husband had the grilled sirloin and it was cooked well, the sauce and mushrooms were a great complement, and the potatoes and veg were on point. For dessert, we had the tiramisu and the chocolate cake...and both were gone before our server came back, the perfect ending to the meal. Absolutely wonderful place in Fells Point, especially if you are a huge fan if Poe like we are. Hubby and I came here to celebrate my birthday. Even though it was busy we were quickly greeted at our bar seats and offered drinks. I started with The Bells and worked my way up to the Edgar. As far as food, i had perhaps one of the best burgers I've ever had and hubby had fish and chips that he really enjoyed. If we lived local this would unquestionably be our regular hangout. Meh. We had duck fat fries and crispy Brussels as starters. Small portions for 1) a shareable and 2) the price. Especially when it became clear the fries are food service fries. My friends enjoyed their entrees - seafood lasagne and a crab ravioli casserole from the specials menu - but mine was just ok. For $40 I did expect a more substantial fried seafood platter (also from the specials menu) but tempered that disappointment with the knowledge they're always bigger at a seafood restaurant. It was half a fried lobster tail, four shrimp, six mussels, small flounder filet, and a mini crab cake. The crab cake was easily the best part and I'm not even a crab cake girl usually. Shrimp were ok. Mussels were good but 2 of them didn't open so I really only got 4 edible. Fish was too fishy so I left it behind. Lobster had promise but was heavily overcooked. There was a small portion of fries as well. They were just ok as well. Dessert was when it got comical. My friends chipwich was had cold cookies she couldn't even cut through with her spoon. Our server (Maya, who was an absolute delight) noticed her face and pulled someone aside to bring her a replacement. Those cookies were soft, but also cold. My other friend and I ordered bread pudding and considered sharing. So glad we didn't. The sliver that showed up on our plates for $12 a piece truly had me wondering if I was being messed with. He laughed so hard he choked. I cannot believe anyone thought that was justified. I was on board for a second try, ordering off the regular menu, but after that I won't be back. I've heard good things about Annabel Lee so I was excited to see them on the list for Baltimore City Restaurant Week this summer. I went with a friend and we ordered different items on the restaurant week menu and shared them. I ordered the mac and cheese and the lemon butter chicken and crab and my friend ordered the duck fat fries and the seafood lasagna. The mac and cheese and fries were so good. The fries were so perfectly crispy and flavorful. I also enjoyed my friend's seafood lasagna. The lemon butter chicken and crab was ok but was a tad bit bland. I enjoyed it as leftovers when I was able to add my own seasoning. Overall, I thought the food options were solid. The drink we ordered was sooo tasty and strong. Beyond the wonderful food, the cocktails, here are delicious, lean towards the smoky and herbal side, and our poured properly to absolutely knock your socks off. This is a tough review to write. I really like Annabel Lee's but I've had mixed experiences. They are around the corner from my house so we've been quite a few times. First off, they changed ownership about a year ago I believe because they were for sale at one point. I really like the food, but the portions are off the past few times I've been there. I love the chicken and butternut squash risotto but twice now there has been minuscule amount of chicken and heaping with risotto. For the price of $26, there needs to be more of the chicken. Also, I had the Chesapeake chicken sandwich on my most recent visit and the again the chicken didn't take up the whole piece of bread. The restaurant is very different than most in baltimore and I appreciate the Edgar Alan Poe theme. The people that work there are very nice. Ultimately, will I go back? The steak alone was underwhelming. Under-seasoned and cooked unevenly. The chimichuri was inedible. The acid was way too over the top, herbs weren't fresh and the volume of processed garlic was too much. I'm here for a good chimi all the time, but this was not good. This place is FULL of my people! Let me start by saying that we were seated very quick (probably cause I had a reservation). The host, forgot his name of course, was very charismatic in seating us and did establish the fact that they were out of crab cakes early LOL. Sat down and ordered a local Baltimore beer called the Annabel Lee White which is an amazing blonde beer kind of similar to a Blue Moon (but better). The steak I ordered was well seasoned and very much so tender, and the Mac and cheese was incredible (I'm sure it was like 6 different cheeses in it). Oh and the steak came with mashed potatoes and green beans that were also really really good. The chef came out twice and asked us how everything was. You can tell he takes pride in his work. Btw this was all doing restaurant week so the price was better than usual and it came with 3 courses for $35! The 3rd course was the cheesecake, which was ok lol not my favorite because I'm a very HARSH cheesecake critic. I ended the night with 2 more drinks from the menu, the Vincent Price, which was literally like cherry bourbon and ice, loved it, especially if you're a strong bourbon lover. And the other drink was called the Masque Of The Red Death (based on the late Edgar Allan Poe's short story). It was was a pretty tasty drink and it had a nice color to it. Now mind you, the bartenders here are not stingy here with the liquor! So tread lightly lol Annabel Lee Tavern is an amazing place, the name is based on the poem Annabel Lee written by Edgar Allan Poe (look it up if you when you get the chance) If you don't know, Edgar Allan Poe lived and died in Baltimore and that's the influence this place holds in the city. It is very dimly lit which adds to the dark esthetic of Poe's morbid stories and poetry. Crazy review alert! First, the overall service and food was pretty on par. We were the first people in after the 4:00pm opening, and the server was very helpful it getting us settled. We got drinks, apps, and our entrees that were each tasty. A great start! Then, on the very few last bites of our main dish, my girlfriend finds a huge piece of plastic cooked in to the side dish. Crazy part is the server was standing there as she discovered it. The sever apologized and said she would let the cook know. Not wanting to cause a scene, my friend let it go. I however was shocked that nothing was offered for the huge and actually very unsanitary mistake that was made. Granted , I did not speak out, but was shocked that it wasn't customary to extend a discount or free dessert as a token of grace. It was just like "My bad," and kept moving.
