Mixed feelings about this restaurant. I could tell the food here is good for my body, my stomach. Good ingredients, experimental recipes. 5 stars for that. But at the same time- if you are not a Vegan/ Vegan friendly, all these 5 star reviews on the restaurant wouldn't help you. If you simply want a good "taste" of sushi and sushi rolls, you have better options around the area. Those restaurants serve you "expected" taste of great sushi rolls and ramens. At Rice, most of their Ramen menus are Vegan. Their Sushi rices are Brown sweet rice. Their famous Dynamite roll and some other roll menus are only rice with some fried tofu on it (With sauce and probably avocado/ eggplant). No single sea food in those menus. It's very different. If I knew this background information, I might have ate/ chose different things. Good service, atmosphere of the restaurant is very cute and welcoming. read more

The staff is super friendly and kind as well. Extra points for the impeccable presentation. They have a huge patio in the back. Also their lunch specials are a great deal. You get an appetizer, mini dish, main course and dessert for $29. Their ramen is pretty good (lots of veg, less noodles) but the broth is a little salty. Recommend by friend and decided to stop by after picking up friend from LAX. Arrived on Sunday evening around 7:30 pm. Called ahead to make reservation for 3. Parking is street parking and metered. Didn't have hard time to find parking but maybe it was because it was later in the evening. Menu is accessed by QR code. Menu was kind of hard to see. Ordered- mushroom miso ramen, mellow miso ramen, sushi roll sunset dream, green tea cake and green tea ice cream. Thought the cost was little bit pricey for the serving you get. My friend ordered the sushi roll sunset dream and was still hungry. All the staff speak Japanese. I speak Japanese but didn't order or ask questions in Japanese. I do not think it is a good idea to come here for a special occasion such as Valentine's Day. It is not that this place is bad. Just the price and quantity of experience does not match. This new Korean spot might be tiny but very delicious. There is not much seating but if you are looking for good take out food you can go wrong. I've have both the beef and chicken bowls and both very delicious. The bowls are nice and big and come with not only rice and a green salad but also a macaroni salad along with the meat of your choice. The three staff members I've ordered with all knew the food well and helped me decide what to choose. Definitely will be back to check out more of the menu! read more

Okay, I'm not sure why it's taken me years to review this place - but I suppose I'm being selfish and want to keep this hole-in-the-wall a hole-in-the-wall. But I realize that's not how we give back to the businesses we genuinely love & support, and for me - this place really does allow for a bittersweet escape into decadent (and might I add, AUTHENTIC) Japanese cuisine. And yes, it does help that it's located a block away from the beach - which does make it an ideal date spot. Who doesn't wanna stroll barefoot on the sand after eating a shit-ton of sushi with your lover? So the fare here is mostly "organic," which these days (unless I'm being cynical) is meaningless. But that aside, organic or not - every roll I've had here has explosive flavor. Especially that dynamite roll, which they now have 3 variations of. I don't recommend the ramen, it tends to be a bit on the bland side of things. But it's, still, very wholesome and I can def appreciate the minimal use of oil here. Not many people know this, but one of the original chefs from Shojin in DTLA parted ways and decided to open up his own restaurant. RICE, being that end result. During my last few months at Shojin, I noticed the declining food quality and it wasn't until I stumbled upon RICE that I realized the magic simply moved closer to home. (Especially after literally being chased out of Shojin - you can read my experience at your leisure.) Yet again, I love RICE :) Met the owner this time, he was SO nice. We made a reservation for 11 people and were seated right away. Reservations are highly recommended! We brought our own wine and they were happy to open it up for us and provide glasses and make sure the glasses were always full! As always, amazing service. For appetizers: we got Brussel sprouts, pumpkin, spicy edamame, & portobello fries. The Brussels were perfectly roasted and very garlicky. The pumpkin I think it's my top favorite thing on the menu... it is so unique and savory!! The spicy edamame was SO good and very spicy!! And the portobello fries were crispy and crunchy and the sauce was to die for! I always get the vegan ramen and it's perfect. I add chili oil because I like things nice and spicy. The owner and the staff here are super nice and accomodating. This place reminds me of Shojin in LA. We ordered the special which included a soup, appetizer, entree, and dessert for $28 per person. Rice is a small little restaurant tucked away just off the water in Manhattan Beach and let me tell you guys, this spot is a gem. Traditional(ish) Japanese cuisine and also very vegan friendly. I love the food, the interior, the menu. It's nothing but goodness. I despise driving and yet I'd brave even the worst traffic to get my ass down here. The food is always solid, I love it. Never had something I didn't thoroughly enjoy. They have all the fish dishes you'd expect at a Japanese spot but they really go balls out on covering vegans. Sushi wise they have crazy rolls like miso tempeh and eggplant, crispy tofu with kale and sweet-spicy sauce, dynamite rolls and more. If sushi isn't your thing they also have all kinds of vegan small plates to make you drool. Tons of vegan ramen flavors, crispy rice, salads galore, mushroom dishes, tofu options. It goes on and on. It's cute inside, small and not a lot of seating so call ahead. I'd say it's "quaint" but that often implies a negative vibe and that's not what I'm getting at. Personally I think they should ditch the TV in the corner since it's over a table and you could whack your head on it but ehh, not a big deal. Japanese is my favorite cuisine by a long shot and honestly Rice is a spot that always sticks out for me. If I lived in Manhattan Beach this would be my weekly stop. My friends and I went here on a late weekend night. It's a small restaurant that has a cozy and romantic ambiance. Very clean and had nice dim lights inside. I ordered the Mellow Miso Ramen which was very delicious! It had corn, garlic chips, vegetables and the broth was a little bit sweet. My friends ordered 2 different types of rolls. I don't really like to eat anything raw, but I tried a small bit. And we also got the Asari Saka-mushi which was also fresh & good. And then we decided to get dessert and had a Strawberry ice cream. It was over my expectations! It had Strawberry bits in it and it was yummy as well! I will definitely get this again next time. :) The food served here are organic, gluten-free, & (some) Vegan. They also have no artificial coloring and preservatives. Healthy & delicious. A little bit pricey, but worth it! Customer service was excellent! As a big fan of Shojin in DTLA, I was excited to hear that the South Bay would be having a similar restaurant. (It's the same manager or chef as Shojin.) KABOCHA PUMPKIN. I am very familiar with it,not the recipe but the vegetable. It's my favorite plant-based food ever but this particular dish was so perfect because of the sweet sauce. Got the Big Wave, Rising Sun, & the White Sand. (Also got spicy tuna on crispy BROWN rice for appetizer.) HOWEVER, I do still like my sushi the way it is without the complicated or fancier greens/veggies.. Some of their organic ingredients just didn't compliment the overall rolls. If you're going for a health kick though, this place is it. SERVICE: T'was alright. They were sweet, explained the healthiness of their menu.. But the one major hit? They swapped mine & my friend's card. Leaving us ACCIDENTALLY using one another's card the following day. I mean half our fault for our cards just happening to look exactly the same but they did hand it back to us in one pile rather than handing it back individually. I don't know, I don't know.. Frankly disappointing. The partner in dine and I were on a mission to have lunch here on a late Sunday afternoon. Parking in downtown Manhattan Beach can be a bit of a chore and requires patience as well as quarters for the meter. It is a nice, quaint location by close to the beach. I had the strawberry mojito which was very refreshing on a hot South Bay afternoon. My sweetie had a lemonade. Didn't sip his but, he seemed fine with it. For starters we had the vegetable tempura which was fine. My sweetie had miso soup and the dynamite roll that mostly everyone else raves about. I tried it and it was just okay. I was so looking forward to the my vegan crunch rolls after reading the tips and reviews about them. Unfortunately, the flavor profile on these items are weak and disappointing The ambiance here is nice and the presentation of the drinks, food, and flower in the candle are pleasing to the eye. Service was fine. The restrooms are outside as they they share their space in a business complex so, you will need a key to their immaculate, super clean restroom that even has mouthwash available. Rice is an all gluten free sushi establishment. Now, I am not a gluten free restricted diet kind of girl but I eat gluten free stuff alot. The decor is super cute and from outside you could tell it was really modern. No gluten means no unagi (eel) or unagi sauce. It also means only brown rice. Again, not opposed to either. THe cut sushi rolls are all unique and all $12 each. Interesting. I ordered the rainbow and the sunrise. The rainbow roll had very little fish on it. Very thin and small fish. I only tasted the brown rice. The sunrise was more flavorful but cheap on fish. They also have portabella mushroom fries which I love. There is soup and other specials. Overall, I thought it was cute but the service was meh and it was not a good value. I do not see why it is so highly rated. It is a very small place- maybe only 35-40 seats including the sushi bar and packed tight. I wouldn't come back. This is my first time trying a healthy gluten-free organic brown rice (vegan) sushi restaurant. Overall, it was a pretty great experience. Yes, I have joined the gluten-free diet trend, and I've been feeling pretty great about it. This place makes it really easy to eat out and stick to the diet; it's also great for vegans! They have a great prixe fix lunch special which is 5 courses for $20, which sounds like a deal to me! First course, soup: miso or corn potage soup. Since I am inherently allergic to corn, I opted for the miso (which I am also slightly allergic too). It was good and had pieces of carrots and shittake mushrooms. Second course, salad. There's like 6-7 options. I got the seaweed and cucumber salad w/ ponzu dressing. Which wasn't my favorite because it was a little salty and I don't enjoy cucumbers that much. My mom got the kale orange walnut salad which was delicious! I would def get that next time. Third course, appetizer. My mom got the yellow tail carpaccio. It was very flavorful and beautifully presented. I got the crispy brown rice spicy tuna, which was huge! A big ball of spicy tuna on top of a crispy brown rice square. YUM! Fourth course, main. We opted for the chefs sushi special, which was my least favorite dish out of the lunch. The fish didn't taste very fresh at all, and I was quite disappointed. Next time I might get the miso cod or something else. Fifth course, dessert. A simple scoop of ice cream (soy milk or almond milk?) with berries. A light and simple dessert was nice. Came here for a lunch with my girlfriends and I was so shock this place was here because my house is literally just down the street from here. The address is a bit deceiving because it actually doesn't SIT on Manhattan Ave, it actually sits on 9th street. So if you're looking for it on Manhattan Ave, you would be looking forever if you are not familiar with the area. It's a very small quaint little place, but the food was very good and the service was so prompt and friendly. We all got their luncheon special, which is way more food than I should eat...but did! And I admit it , I loved every part of it!! I started with their orange, tomato, and candied pecan salad. Very yummy with lots of flavor! Miso soup, now this place does not make miso soup in a sense that we all know miso soup to be. They add carrots to it, and some people were put off by it but I love me some vitamin C so bring it on! The mushroom that they put in their soup is shittake. Then I had their crispy tofu, I still haven't decided how I feel about this dish..because the crispy part was actually deep fried white rice (think burnt rice for those who know what I'm talking about) and the top part is topped with a tofu paste. I liked the dish, though there really wasn't that much flavor to it aside from the crunchiness but I can see how some may not like it. Jury is still out for me on this one, maybe I just need to try it like 5 more times...lol Then I had their miso cod, it was my favorite dish. However there are tiny bones that were still attached to this fish- you've been warn! I will come back on a later date, or maybe even convince the Mr to skip our usual sushi place (which is just down the street from this one) to try Rice one evening for their sushi! A favorite downtown MB takeout spot. Love the crunchy miso ramen - to which I like to add a leftover piece of salmon and some Cholula hot sauce. Amazing... Also just had the sashimi boat.
