Hidden gem in Melrose that's a great date spot, or a destination for foodies. The vibe of the place is amazing, and their patio out back is cozy and friendly. Service was wonderful and cocktails were varied and interesting. The bartender was so amazingly hipster I grew a curled mustache just watching him work. The food was solid, with a mix of good vegetarian options, classic dishes (pork belly) and some things (octopus + chorizo) you won't find in many places in town. Talk with your server if you have any questions as not every dish is for everyone, but if you're adventurous you'll have a good time. read more

The patio and inside are very pretty here. The food that I had was all good, although I wish they had sides you could order. I got the chicken, which was about 50% bone and had no side. I was still pretty hungry after my meal. The chicken did have good flavor but seemed very overpriced, given the size and that it comes with nothing else. The chairs on the outdoor patio were pretty uncomfortable. My dad had a nail coming out of his. There is no kids menu but they were able to make mac n'cheese for my daughter, which was nice. Long story made short, the chef at this place doesn't hold back on pushing amazing flavors, and squeezing the most out of them with other flavor profiles that compliment. The result is like holding a bull horn to the plate. The food doesn't just speak to you, it screams. It reminded me of reading through Le repertoire de la cuisine, or the flavor bible, how every component of the dishes sang harmoniously. The tasting menu is totally the way to go here, and you are selling yourself short if you don't get the wine pairings. I love eating this caliber of food because you can taste how much time goes into it. The ingredients used are hard work, knowledge of food, creativity, and experimentation. And the outcome is happiness. The service was spot on and the food was almost flawless. One hiccup on the foi gras course was the only chink in the armour I could find, and I know where to look. Interesting concept of 5 courses from the kitchen. There were two of us so we got to try 8 different dishes and 2 desserts. We made reservation in advance but they gave some bar/counter area for walk-ins. We sat right next to the kitchen and could see them making the pasta that they served me. The food are delicious from fresh ingredients. The plate presentation is great. I wish they know/ask/guess right on who would like what dish/main ingredient. If they do, I feel like my experience would be better. Sometimes we did switch our dish since he likes raw fish and I like raw duck. For the dessert, the server asked who like chocolate. We could not answer right away because I like dark chocolate while he likes milk chocolate. However I saw the lemon bar on the other plate so I told them that lemon is for him. read more

Restaurant Progress is a very nice little bar & restaurant - great vibe, the bar is really the centerpiece & the drinks were fabulous. The Bartender was entertaining & super skilled! The wine selection was good & we had a nice Sangiovese. We ordered Noble sourdough bread, which was great & comes with butter and a few other goodies that were wonderful. The food was good. Servings are not large (they are a la carte), so be prepared for that. Beef Tartare was very tasty & a decent portion, probably my favorite dish. The sweet potato was incredible....but a small potato and we totally wanted more. The Octopus was really good, but again I would have plated it with more potatoe slices to make it a bit more filling since it is not an inexpensive dish. Pork belly was very good and the size was good. 2 of us ordered the Bavette (a flank steak). Unfortunately both steaks were incredibly tough. One was literally inedible & we returned it and ordered the chicken instead. I ate mine, as the flavor was great and I hate to waste food. But it was almost impossible to chew it...I should have returned it. $38 for a small steak that was incredibly tough is not right. We had even asked the server if the Bavette was tender before ordering it. She said it was very tender (tho of course it may have been just a tough couple of steaks that came in...). The staff were very nice about taking the steak back and letting us order something else. But honestly, with BOTH steaks being horribly tough, I would have comped the chicken dish - they didn't. The chicken was delicious, but again, a very small serving. If it has been plated with more turnips (which were really good), it would have been better. I understand the dishes are done "small plate" style but in that case it might be smart to add some filler side dishes to the menu diners don't walk away hungry. In summary, the food was great, flavors were fantastic. Service was also great. The Bavette just really thru a shadow on the experience and is the reason for 4 stars. read more

True culinary experience! If you like deliciousness and new tastes, this is the place. We ate here on a Friday night, and I am so impressed, every dish was perfect. The patio is very romantic with good lighting. Tables are quaint, allowing you to feel secluded from your week. The espresso had hints of rich dark chocolate. The eggplant parm had a perfect crust with a soft buttery inside, along with sweet/ spicy marinara. The pasta was creamy with Al dente noodles, topped with fresh salmon roe--every bite was sublime. 10/10 read more

After much thought and deliberation my boyfriend picked this place to celebrate my birthday and I am so glad he did. This had been on my radar before and for good reason. The restaurant has a very small menu but you can tell everything has been carefully curated. We both wanted to try the pork belly and I almost went with a different dish just so we tried something different however I'm happy I did chose the pork belly in the end because it was incredible tasty. The pork was cooked to perfection and just the right amount of spicy. We shared roasted squash as an appetizer and it was delicious. The chocolate mousse was good as well. The restaurant itself was so nice and cozy. We sat in the patio and it was a perfect Arizonan night. Service was excellent and it pains me to drop one star because I really loved this restaurant however my boyfriend had something incredibly spicy on his pork belly which we presume was on the plate by accident (definitely not jalapeños, something way spicier). It was the spiciest thing he had ever tried and almost brought him to tears. Such a shame cuz otherwise it would have been the best experience ever. I will say that despite this I definitely want to go back again and do recommend this place. Great spot for date night. read more

A trendy little spot in Phoenix! We visited Restaurant Progress for dinner. We made a reservation in advance on Tock in advance and were seated promptly. Service was excellent. We enjoyed both of our starters--the heirloom tomato (refreshing with an herby kick) and summer squash (nice and tart, and well complemented by the goat cheese, but watch out for stray pistachio shells). There was a bit of a gap between the starters and mains, but to tide us over they brought a couple of complementary uni shooters, which was much appreciated! The mains were very good, too--the french onion soup dumplings were true to their name and very creative, and the salmon had a lovely flavor (the herbs and sauce were the stars of the show, but the fish was also well done; though the skin was quite salty). We sat on a table in their back patio and it was lovely. They have a strong fan and misters, which kept it very cool despite the heat. The table was a bit small, but we really enjoyed the setting. I am fine with a restaurant that is a touch pretentious but when it does not follow through with great food then the vibe is not earned. There are certainly positives, you can watch the well choreographed kitchen routine, the entertaining barman, unusual bathrooms and enjoy the nice patio. The food was certainly edible but way overpriced, small in quantity and not as impressive as the wording on the menu led one to anticipate. This is such an adorable little gem in the Melrose district of Phoenix! It was packed but they were able to squeeze me in at the bar and the bartender was super nice! I enjoyed the craft mezcal cocktail as well as a unique French wine that I don't remember the name of now but the wine list here is all unique stuff you won't find anywhere else. The food was on point, my salmon was mouth watering and super tasty! The cheese board and salad were also really good! Let me start off with the positive stuff. The restaurant itself is decorated tastefully. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The food, as much as i would've wanted it to be good was some of the worst food I've had at a restaurant and even worse when considering the price. The Uni shooter was the second best dish we had yet the strong ponzu soy sauce totally masked the flavor of the uni, whats the point then? The tuna crudo is fine, nothing special and many other places ive been to make a way better dish with raw tuna, herbs and some sort of sauce. The tomato salad was alright but underwhelming. Now we get to the part of the meal that we couldn't even finish: The summer squash has to be the worst restaurant dish ive ever had. It was a huge pile of basically boiled squash with tons of overly salted water running all over the place. We didnt finish that. The pasta was not done well at all. I like al dente pasta usually but this was not done enough yet it was chewy and too bouncy. The puttanesca sauce was underwhelming (too liquid) to say the least. The final course came, the chicken. This was the least fairly priced course at $32 for two measly chicken pieces, one of which the skin was so salty i had to spit it out discreetly. The prune puree was interesting and a nice touch. Some tips: do not get the "leave it to kitchen" tasting menu. It is $150 and up until the desert the sum total of our meal was $136 so unless the desert was $14, they went under what we paid for the course meal. This is extremely disappointing and dishonest since you are trusting the kitchen to give you a good meal and usually tasting menus are a good deal since you cant chose what you eat but you make it up in value. I write this review with a little bit of anger because of the way the menu was set up for us but mainly with disappointment and sadness as the location, decoration and vibe of this place could make it be a fantastic restaurant and a regular spot for us but the food, the central element of the meal was just not there. Im even wondering if the usual cook had some emergency and someone else had to take over because I have trouble believing that people would ever go back to such terrible, ill conceived, overly salted, water saturated food. PS: their desert (a blueberry crumble?) was great! read more

Came here for dinner and it was delicious! Our server was very nice and helped us with the wine menu and I ended up getting the rose. The portions are small and are meant to be shared similar to tapas. I enjoyed everything we got! We made a reservation and we're seated right away. The food is very good but the menu needs to be interpreted by the waitress. Lots of fancy words leave you wondering what the dish really is. We ordered the French onion soup dumplings, two vegetable dishes and one salmon entrée to split. We also had one cocktail and two glasses of wine. Although the food was good quality and the service was great I was not too happy about the $170 cost. The only thing we didn't finish were the dumplings. The were bland and flavorless. If we had 2 entrees the check would have exceeded $200. Far to expensive for me. read more

When you pull up you know right away you're in for a treat. The restaurant has an intimate feel with perfectly dimmer lighting and there was plenty of space between tables to make you feel comfortable with the current COVID-19 concerns. Legitimately, and with my whole heart, I didn't know food could taste this good. The ambiance, and aesthetic is perfect. It's romantic and beautiful and understated. Yet somehow every detail is bespoke. From the elegant wall art to the exposed beams and Edison bulbs. I'm a designer, so believe me when I say that this place is designed with every detail thoughtfully expressed for the ultimate experience. We had the tasting menu. I recommend it a billion times. I'm actually still stunned as I sit here contemplating the sheer value ratio for the price point. All together we tried TEN different gourmet dishes, each of them worthy of royalty. Each one better than the one before it. For $150 for two. I am baffled at how we got away with this. It seemed genuinely worth at least twice the price. Because it was the best meal I've ever had in my entire life. The service was impeccable. She was so skillful and intuitive and seemed to read our minds. I'd had a craving for duck and she was able to arrange that as one of our entrees even though it's supposed to be chef's choice. Please just go to this place. Restaurant Progress is a hidden gem in Phoenix. I have been wanting to visit for a long time but reservations book up quickly. We came to the restaurant during COVID and were not disappointed. The staff follows all health guidelines and made us feel comfortable. We ordered the pasta special which was made with pistachio pesto. It was our favorite part of the meal! I went here for dinner, as a test I wasn't allowed to look at yelp prior to choosing a restaurant. We chose based on the location on a map... and I definitely wasn't disappointed. From start to finish, it was such a great experience. Laura was our server, she was super knowledgeable and friendly... and also had great recommendations for me because I'm super indecisive. We had the pork belly and the house made sausage. They were both perfect sized portions, enough to feel full without being miserable (which I tend to do). The restaurant itself has a changing menu, it's a bit dark inside, romantic. Perfect for a date night. My only complaint was, the door doesn't always shut all of the way and in the winter it can get chilly, as we were seated next to the door. I will say, they do an awesome job and trying to keep it shut. This was such a great experience, somewhere I'd definitely love to come back to! read more

There has been quite a bit of hype about this restaurant and I can see why! Quaint, open and friendly atmosphere. We didn't have a reservation, but we were able to enjoy an amazing dinner at their communal table on the patio. I was concerned we would be cold, but he heaters kept us nice and warm. The patio is decorated with vintage lights and ornaments, perfect for the holidays. Our server was such a delight, providing exceptional service and recommendations. The chefs were also fantastic and truly care about their customers. They even stopped cooking for a couple of minutes to help move a bench so our group could be closer. We started with sourdough and potato and leek soup, perfect selection for this time of year. The potato and leek soup was silky and included a poached egg which added an even creamier and fuller flavor. We then moved to mid courses, trying the seared cauliflower, tortelli (my favorite) and pork belly. While all were fantastic, the tortelli and pork belly had so much flavor. The ingredients in both dishes had a warmth and seasonal flare. For main entrees, we enjoyed the beef cheeks and sea bass. Again, both were delightful but the sea bass was the winner. The sea bass was fresh and was accompanied by chorizo and clams all resting in a perfectly balanced sauce. It was my friend's birthday and the staff brought us a carrot cake on the house. We were so full, but couldn't resist. The carrot cake was not too sweet which was a perfect way to the end the meal. Ordering a craft cocktail is must here! They have a few selections on the menu or if you provide your drink profile, they serve you a delicious concoction! I'm looking forward to going back! From the atmosphere, to service, to food - it's a delight. These guys go above and beyond what I expect from typical PHX restaurants. Very open and extremely friendly atmosphere where you can see the cooks preparing your meal in a highly systematic fashion and smiles on all of the staffs faces! Initially we had came without booking a reservation (which I know better next time) the restaurant seemed a lot bigger on Yelp than it actually is in person. Which is actually really cool to me. You definitely get the intimate vibe and feel like the staff knows you and your life. I was too busy being interested in the drink I was sipping on and forgot the waiter's name. He was awesome needless to say and he was very knowledgeable about the food, as he explained everything effortlessly. After dinner we had moved to the bar, and ordered their carrot cake and coffee. The carrot cake was insanely delicious, super airy and flavorful. The buttercream they used was out of this world and the coffee was so good that when we left we were full and alert - haha! Was recommended by a neighbor to try Restaurant Progress. We loved it! The bartender and 2 ladies that were working were amazing and very customer focused. I will say the menu was kind of confusing in that the descriptions didn't really tell you if it was a pasta or meat dish and they weren't really divided by aNy main category. We travel extensively and even in foreign languages you get the gist of appetizer, starters and main dishes. The portions and prices are perfect in my opinion. You are paying for a higher quality, so pricing comments in previous reviews are silly IMO. You can look at prices and decide if you can afford it. It's not the restaurants fault that you want an expensive meal that's above your budget. Drinks, meal and dessert were perfect for my entire family We did not have reservations so we had to sit at the bar, which was fine. The bartender was very nice and very attentive. I definitely recommend this place for anyone thats looking for a good environment, and great food at a fair price. What can we say, Restaurant Progress hits all the marks! We were finally lucky enough to catch them for brunch and it was so lovely. Everything here is made with passion and thoughtfulness. You can see the worldly influences on the dishes and not one thing tastes like the other. We went with the Pork chop and chorizo hash; the sourdough bread with delicious goat cheese and jam; and a lovely Brussels sprout salad to finish the meal. The patio is beautifully set up with perfectly matched music, and let's not forget our lovely server! She was sweet, attentive and truly wrapped up the whole experience.
