Small restaurant inhabiting an old pharmacy space. We went last year and decided to check it out again. The menu is ever changing (unfortunately much more meat heavy this time for this pescetarian), however they catered the tasting menu to my dietary preferences and I was thrilled with the results. The 5 courses were standard menu sized and definitely shareable with my husband. Whether or not you do the tasting menu I recommend at least a couple of shareable dishes for the table. I had never heard of this place prior to coming, and it's very tiny and easy to miss. But well worth the trip. Did the tasting menu (vegetarian style), which is limited, and extremely limited if you don't eat seafood. But when you make a butternut squash as amazing as they do here, there's no need for any other entree. The pasta the butternut squash filling is wrapped with is home made, as is the filling. It's served with a light brown butter sauce and I'm drooling as I describe it...I would come back here every day for this course. Coming in at a close second is the cauliflower...Idk what the sauce is that they serve in the dish, but I don't remember having had anything like this before, again something I would come back for again and again...it was even delicious as leftovers the next day. I had never had sea bass prior to this evening and was a little nervous...not sure why because this was absolutely fantastic. It came either pan seared or blackened, it had a nice, crispy brown crust, but was moist and delicious all the way through. Not an expert, but I'd have to say that was cooked to perfection. The presentation of this menu is stunning. The colors are vibrant, the food is fresh and warm, the service was second to none, and the setting is very classy. The tasting menu is normally $75, but they gave us a discount of $65 since we did vegetarian. An extremely reasonable price for food of this caliber. In town for work and went to Yelp to find something different. Wasn't in the mood for Mexican or Asian fusion on this trip. You can find those on every corner in Phoenix. No offense. Was blown away by this place. Reading the Yelp reviews, I get it, wasn't going to be my standard $20 applebees dinner. That being said, we got what we paid for then some. We did the Chefs tasting and it was unbelievable. The bartender and host were super attentive and courteous. We had the chefs in plain sight since it's a smaller space and they were engaging and having a good time. Always good when you can tell they're enjoying their craft. On the plate, from start to finish, we tried practically everything on the menu. Dinner for two with each of us doing a chefs tasting, they made it so they brought out two different courses each time. I will warn you, it's a lot of food. Not sure what people are complaining about regarding portions. If you want that kind of meal, go to Cheesecake Factory. I love to eat and it was more than plenty of food for us both. My favs: carpaccio, the duck, and the raspberry desert. If you're going to order one thing, order the carpaccio. You'll see them and hear them pounding it out before they bring it to your table. Our first time dining, our overall experience was okay-good. Food menu was limited (on a Wednesday evening) but was good. Beef carpaccio was the main reason I wanted to try - which was good! Wines & beers are limited a little over price. Ambiance is nice & friendly staff. Interestingly, the direction (linked from Yelp) to the restaurant was incorrect - it directed & located the location on the East Side Of 7 th Avenue (FYI) instead of the West Side (Correct). Honestly, I had high hopes after hearing about this place from friends, but was ultimately disappointed. Normally I am all about a millennial-centric restaurant with locally-sourced ingredients, hipster wall art and aesthetically pleasing entrees, but Restaurant Progress left me feeling like they were just that- In progress. The food is extremely "meh" and quite honestly over priced. Our friends ordered the crudo which was $16 and smaller than a standard biscuit. The bread was okay, but the butter was extremely salted. My soup, a strawberry gazpacho was absolutely beautiful- but too sweet to finish. My fiancé's house pasta was excellent, but was $25 and contained maybe 6 noodles. The cocktails are really nice, but I doubt I would go back specifically for a drink. All in all, I don't think we will be back. read more

We had a party of 5 for a birthday celebration at Restaurant Progress this last week. It's a small place with a really cool vibe. The menu changes quite frequently, so you may not find what I discuss...but rest assured whatever it is will be well done. The five of us decided to select the 'Leave it to the Kitchen' option of 5 courses. With all five of us, we were able to have pretty much everything on the menu between us. There was not one miss in execution and a few of the dishes were over the top winners. The standouts for us were the Snap Pea Salad, the Strawberry Gazpacho, the Farro Risotto, the Pork Belly and the Seared Duck Breast. Fantastic flavours. We ordered an extra gazpacho as it was that good. My dessert was a lemon-meringue tart and honestly the crust of the tart was like the best butter shortbread I've ever had. I wanted 2-3 more! The wine list is 'eclectic'. You'll find things there you wouldn't normally see and my advice is to ask the server questions if you have any. They're quite knowledgeable. Speaking of service, Sid and the rest of the team were on point. Very helpful, cheerful and professional. Timing of the meal was also spot on. No real delay between courses. Everyone marked correctly prior to the next course. These guys know what they're doing. I strongly suggest you visit. Reservations would be HIGHLY suggested as they are indeed a small place. I honestly can't say enough good things about Restaurant Progress. My fiance and I went there last night for our anniversary, and everything from the ambiance, food, and cocktail list were amazing. Even more amazing than the food, though, was the hospitality and service we received from Sid and Ester (really hope I'm remembering the second name correctly!). First off, since it was our anniversary, Ester brought us a glass of sparking on the house, which I thought was so sweet. Sid was our waiter and was so extremely helpful with the menu choices, explaining what was in the pick 5 menu, and everything else! Lastly, they went waaayyy above and beyond for us as I felt pretty ill (even before coming to the restaurant, but I still wanted to go) and we ended up asking to put the last 2 courses in a to-go box. They both worked together to box it up, get me everything I need and even put a menu in the bag so we knew what the dishes were! They also offered me sparkling water and bitters to help with my upset stomach. Honestly, I haven't felt this type of hospitality at a restaurant in a long time. I had been meaning to come to this place for about three years. For one reason or another, it just hadn't worked out. Finally, this last December, my wife and I finally were able to get a table. The wait was more than worth it. First off, the staff is super friendly and 100% professional. Yet, it didn't feel stuffy at all. It was super comfortable from the moment we walked through the door. The wine selection is fantastic. We ordered some sourdough and some manchego cheese, which came with some sort of tapenade (I hope that's what it's called!). It was a delicious start to a wonderful night. For our entrees, my wife ordered the steamed mussels and I ordered the flank steak. (They change their menu often so you might not be able to find these items.) Both of them were out of this world. The one comment I'd have to say is that the raw Serrano peppers in the steak dish did not quite blend in with the steak. Perhaps some roasting would help with this. Raw serrano peppers are a little too bright. There is no comment on the steamed mussels, which were accompanied with some chorizo. It was perfect. Came here with a group of friends for my birthday. While the waitress was very informative and friendly, there were aspects of the food that were disappointing. The Caesar salad was served on white endive so not the best lettuce choice but was also very heavy anchovy forward which I liked but many in the party were not so inclined and couldn't finish the salads. The waitress should have mentioned that. When the main courses came out, I ordered the crab toast which came out served on absolutely charred to a crisp toast. It was burnt very badly and at $30 for the plate should never have been served. The waitress said it was "toasty" after I showed it to her and she said she would replace it when I asked. Thinking the whole dish would be replaced, she just comes out with a plate of toast to which I'm then left to scrape off the crab mixture off the burnt toast onto the new toast. For the price of the entree I should have never been made to do that. The lasagna entrees people in the group got were burnt as well. Then I was offered at the end of the meal if I wanted to buy my desert for my birthday. I passed. read more

If you've read any of my past Yelp restaurant reviews or heard me describe a dining experience, chances are you know one consistent thing about me. When it comes to trying a place for the first time, I'm a maximalist (or that I "pig out", if you wanna get slightly less sophisticated). My first experience with chef and owner TJ Culp's midtown Phoenix concept was no different. I had Restaurant Progress on my bookmark list almost from the moment they opened. It took me almost two years to finally build up the nerve (and the budget), to make my first trip here. On a Saturday at dinner time, that day finally arrived. Look for Restaurant Progress on the northwest corner of 7th Avenue and Montecito (just north of Indian School in the Melrose neighborhood). This beautifully restored and preserved brick building is an absolute dream. Brick facade adorned with artwork, exposed wooden trusses, tiles lining the bar area, and even an open kitchen for all to see. There's also a beautiful patio out back for good measure. Progress is a popular spot in midtown so reservations are recommended, but I was able to secure a spot at the bar at 5pm opening (not unusual for bar patrons, so I'm told). I should parse this review by saying I knew I was going to spend big here for my first go around (that's by no means a requirement, though). I'm a sucker for anything resembling a greatest hits menu item or even a tasting menu. And it just so happens that Progress has a 5 course tasting menu for $75. You can also add a Fois Gras course and a wine pairing for extra. Being the sucker I am, I said yes to all of it (thanks in part to some convincing from Alexandra the bartender). So with that, tonight was going to be a marathon. Let's begin (and please feel free to view my photos for context). First course was a scallop crudo paired with a Rose. The crudo included slices of grapefruit, fennel, fresno chilis, lemon garlic vinagrette, mint, and crushed pistachios. Second course? A kale salad paired with Chardonnay. The salad included lemon vinagrette, white cheddar, currant, apricot, slices of grapefruit, and sunflower seeds. Third course? A maple glazed pork belly with apple cider farro, pumpkin seeds, crushed almonds, grape reduction, and sage. Came paired with a Pinot Noir. Fourth Course? This was the Fois Gras add-on I agreed to. A polenta cake topped with uni, fois gras, crema, and honey. Paired with Champagne. Fifth Course? Duck breast with lentils, orange flavored caramel, sweet potato, mint, fennel, and herbs. Paired with an old vine Zinfandel. And for the last course, a chocolate mousse with marshmallow cream, chocolate nibs, and caramel sauce. Paired with a Port wine. I don't think I need to use too many descriptives to convey what this experience was like. Bottomline, this meal was absolutely outstanding on all levels. My favorite dish of the bunch was probably the the pork belly. The maple glaze and grape reduction was positively out of this world. The wines paired well with each dish and the presentation was top of the line (seriously, just look at the photos of these beautiful dishes). The staff went out of their way to describe each dish in detail, each of them were incredibly friendly and attentive, and watching Chef Culp and his staff work right beside the bar is entertainment in of itself. My total cost for all the food, wines, tax and tip came to $175. Now don't panic, this is the absolute most expensive experience you can have. If you're looking for something scaled down to a normal meal, you can easily have a quality experience here for $50/person or less. It all just depends on your comfort level (and your budget). From my way of thinking, it says quite a lot that an upper echelon restaurant like this can now not only survive, but thrive in the midtown area. A place like this would've been unthinkable years ago. But chef Culp clearly knows his craft and knows how he wants to deliver it. And the midtown crowd is definitely responding with packed crowds regularly. A truly wonderful experience of sustainability, creativity, and deliciousness. Go experience it for yourself. I ordered the blue fin tuna carpaccio as an appetizer, which was thin tuna coated in panko and foe gras. For an entrée, I had the chicken fried trout. The name is deceiving; as there is no chicken. Instead, you get trout coated with southern breading and fried. It was really wonderful. I had a few local craft beers with my meal and was very satisfied. You can order a la carte or choose from a price fix menu. Restaurant Progress is very much worth visiting. The decor is stunning, relaxing, non-pretensious, and the food is delightful. We had dinner at RP last Friday night for my wife's birthday. Funky, intimate, romantic, neighborhood feel, craft cocktails, decent wine list, great service, wonderful fusion creations from the freshest ingredients. They have a 5 course chefs "just feed me" tasting option for $75. We both opted for this option and they fed us 5 different courses each, so we got to taste 10 dishes during our adventure. It was amazing. I would say 9 out of the 10 courses were fabulous and that's just because there is nothing I can do to get on the Kale train. The dressing and yummies on the Kale salad were great....but again, it was on Kale. My wife got to eat most of the Kale course much to her delight. RP is a nice culinary gem with motivated passionate staff. It is not inexpensive, but is a good value for the quality of the experience. Check it out. read more

If I had to describe my perfect place I would describe Restaurant Progress. It was taken out of my dreams and turned into a reality. It was lobe at first sight, as soon as I got out of the car the window sign called my attention, very elegant and vintage looking. The inside is small and homie, dimmed lights and candles on the table that reflect on the white tile walls. Very organic and minimalistic decor combined with natural plants. The list of drinks is amazing, it was hard to make up my mind. As always I went with the drink that sounded the most original. It was a full experience from the preparation to how the drink looked. ( i am attaching a picture cause I dont think i would make it justice describing it) Celery and cucumber juice combined with a selection of spirits and bitters that tasted like heaven. This eclectic restaurant was a wonderful dining experience! I was visiting from L. A. and wanted to dine at a nice, local place si a friend recommended it. Although they were very busy and none of the tables were available, I was able to get a spot at the bar. The bar is very hip, the bartender (I think his name was Manny) was a cool gentleman who will make you the most delightful drink in an instant, after you give him an idea of the type of drink you prefer. This place is tiny and cozy. Loved the interior design and the staff, was amazing with great service. However, the food not so great. We went there for a date night to try out after reading the great reviews. The restaurant quickly filled up with a lot of other couples that were doing the same. After all it is a very romantic setting. We tried three dishes to share, the tenderloin appetizer and then also fried green tomatoes and a fresh linguine pasta. And 3 glasses of wine in total. The tenderloin was like having raw meat in your mouth. The fried green tomatoes or should I say tomato was quartered and not sliced and on our plate was exactly 3/4 of a tomato with a large glob of white cheesey stuff in the center. Lastly the linguine pasta, was another disappointment. All three items were extremely small servings with a huge price tag. All said and done when this dinner was finished it was $125 and we were still hungry I'm not satisfied. read more

The food was absolutely delicious! Prices were high especially for the octopus $30 for two small tentacles over tomatoes on a 8"round dish. It was more like an appetizer portion. Portion was fine but price was very high compared to other restaurants where they serve octopus. The flavors were amazing. We enjoy sitting at the bar mostly because we like a variety of cocktails with our meal and enjoy the input from the bartenders. Our bartender manny was very nice but he was too busy making drinks for the restaurant guests to offer us the service that we expect when we dine in this capacity. We had to ask for water we had to ask for cocktails and we had to ask for to order food. And each time we felt as if we were a bother for Manny. It's not his fault. But there should be someone making well drinks and someone servicing bar guests especially when we spent 150 on 4 drinks an appetizer and a very small dinner entree. We would have stayed and continued but we felt an imbalance and decide to continue our meal at another establishment. We will definitely return and give it another try because the flavors were great and hope to have a better experience the next time. read more

Met a friend here right when they opened at 5. The ambiance was so cute. Waitresses were nice and professional helped me select a wine I liked and let me taste some before deciding. The menu changes every so often and I was lucky enough to get to try the Pork Belly and the Spiced Octopus. The Pork belly was with some kind of grain or oat but there was a crunch and the sweetness was so good! I cleared my plate. There was a cute patio out back. I had high hopes for this place, and in many ways it did deliver, but I do feel the food sort of fell short. We both got the tasting menu, starting with the scallops and beef tartare. This was one of the more stronger courses, with the scallops winning the round. The beef was good but the flavors in the scallop dish came through a little more. The next course is where things got odd - a salad with brussels in a butter vinaigrette and a salad with pea shoots and radishes on top of herbed butter. Having butter on a salad was a bit too out there for my tablemate even though the flavors I thought were good. The next course we were given another salad with pea shoots which I found repetitive, but the carrot purée on the bottom this time made it tasty. We also received a generous portion of pork belly and farro- a dish that was a bit too sweet with nothing really to cut it or balance it out. The entrees and desserts were unfortunately the weakest courses of the night, with the octopus being a bit too chewy for my taste, accompanied with an under seasoned sauce and undercooked chickpeas. The duck was cooked well, but the dish was flat otherwise and a bit cold. The desserts were a chocolate mousse dome with marshmallow whip and a poached pear with gelato, the pear being the better dish here. Being chocolate lovers, we were very disappointed in the lack of chocolate flavor, it was just overly sweet. If it wasn't for the impeccable service and good cocktails, and the fact I just want places like this to succeed (being in the industry), I would've given this place 3 stars. I have a few food allergies and we chose "leave it to the kitchen" - they brought out plate after plate of incredible food which they adapted to my dietary needs. The food and service at this restaurant is AMAZING! They have such a unique menu that I had to go there two days in a row to try different things because I was only in town for the weekend. The food is so good here that even my picky teenager wanted to go twice. The chicken is sourced locally and it is cooked to perfection.
