My daughter had the penne a la vodka- an enormous mountain of freshly-prepared pasta in a creamy tomato sauce. She took most of it home and carried it to school for her lunch. Sammy had the cheese quesadilla and also enjoyed leftovers the best day. I went for the Brioche French Toast-deliciousness served simply with whipped butter ($6.95) Opted for a poached egg, and side of bacon which was the only disappointment of our meal. Up this area for a wedding and after a night of drinking we head across the street from our hotel to the Red line which is the only place open past 10PM. Your typical diner very expansive with an even more expansive menu. We kept is simple with a Turkey Club, some Disco fries, coffee & Soft drinks though we are told their deserts and milk shake bar seem to be second to none. Coffee was hot & Fresh our server was outstanding and very informative & pleasant. The Club was simply ok while the fries were hot the disco gravy needed a little something extra. We skipped the very good-looking deserts going by and the table next to us received a French Dip & Giant Cheeseburger that made me regret my Club decision LOL. This place is the greasy spoon, without all the unwanted grease. My mother and I were in town for a wake, and a friend/former local recommended this spot. Goodness, were we impressed. Starting with the atmosphere - for starters, at 6PM on a Sunday evening, the place was bustling. The booths appear classic in style, but also up-to-date. The back of each booth is topped with a clear panel, so you have privacy but also good visibility - no feeling of claustrophobia. The counters that greet you up front are clean, the timeless dessert cases show multi-layer cakes and pies including a merengue that looked ready to jump out of the case. The menu is massive, but after a short while we were able to decide. It was a blustery, fall day with overcast skies and spotty showers. Comfort food it would be. I opted for the chicken pot pie, while Mum ordered an open-faced hot turkey sandwich. My chicken pot pie came out in a sizable bowl (apologies for the lack of pictures!), with a crust that looked cooked to perfection. I was unsure about it, since it looked as though it was a bit deconstructed (as opposed to being baked together), and as a lover of crust I always miss a bottom crust. However, it was phenomenal. The veggies inside were so fresh (pearl onions, carrots, peas I believe, others perhaps). There was ample chicken, and the crust was a perfect ratio for the filling. And one thing it wasn't? It wasn't salty. Foods in some restaurants are sometimes over salted because they forget there are other flavorful things. This was well-seasoned, with other poultry-appropriate spices. My mother's sandwich arrived on a rectangle plate - a big deal to me because the presentation was upscale, no chintzy plastic plates from the 70s or inadequate flatware. This was an upscale presentation. A heaping mound of Turkey, fresh bread, gravy, mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables that looked to have come out of the garden. She commented on how perfect the veggies were, insisting I try a carrot. They were crisp and piping hot and delightful. At one point she held up a lump from the mashed potatoes - as a family who enjoys them that way, it was a welcomed sign they were fresh and delicious. We took a piece of carrot cake to go, and while it was good, it wasn't other-worldly. It didn't take away from the overall experience, but it wasn't quite on par with the rest of the food we enjoyed while there. Hopefully I'll have a reason to stop in some other time on a journey. This place is a lot cleaner than a regular diner 3. Food here tastes slightly better than other diners, but does not taste as much as a regular restaurant Tex-mex omelet was ok. I prefer more flavor from it, but not bad. Santa fe wrap was also on the blander side, but ok. Red line combo was fine. The steak in it was good, crab stuffing and shrimp as fine. We heard really good things about this dinner so we had to stop on our way up north. I have to say, this diner had great socially distant outdoor dining and really friendly staff. Nice music and lights under the tent made it a nice experience. We shared 3 different dishes-- sweet potato pancakes, chicken & waffles and Santa Fe wrap. I really enjoyed the pancakes and egg wrap. The pancakes were light and fluffy and had such great warm fall flavor! The chicken and waffles were disappointing. There was not too much chicken on the bone, mostly breading and skin which is not our thing. The waffles were fine, I was just expecting more with the chicken. I was visiting the area for the month of April, 2024 on a difficult family visit. One of the best things I can say about Nick, Liz, and Ken is that they treated me like in was a guest in their own home. My spot is at the counter and found the regulars there to be friendly, yet unobtrusive. The Seafood Angelina is a top notch dish, plenty of fresh shellfish and a delicious pasta in a light lemony sauce. On a particularly cold and wet night I enjoyed THE best pot pie I have ever eaten. The light and fluffy crust floated on a ginormous bowl of flavorful chicken and vegetable goodness, I had a family recipe Moussaka which was awesome, light béchamel sauce and a finely ground meat filling. It made for two meals, as did most of these entrees. The bar was complete with a personal fav - Widow Jane bourbon from Brooklyn! I'm not a diner person, but when the cheatingest team in football just lost in the playoffs, you celebrate, and when you celebrate after midnight, you go to a diner. That brought me to Red Line for the second time, and the first time ordering any amount of food. As is my wont, I went with breakfast, and had a modified sausage omelette - add onions, mushrooms, Swiss cheese. Sorta like a Swiss burger omelette, but with sausage. It turns out all of these items were considered extras, jacking my price into exotic territory. I could have expected that, but they should have informed on the menu that each item adds a cost - the menu only suggests that meats are extra. The prices for most items are pretty high compared to NJ diners, too. So I'm deducting a star for feeling like I was slightly robbed. On the plus side, the omelette was large and delicious, the home fries were home fries (not dried out, which is my one complaint), and plenty of side toast. The iced tea was bottomless. I wish this place let you substitute pancakes for toast like some NJ diners. I ended up too stuffed for dessert, but I have my eye on that half-mousse, half-cheesecake. I'll be back. read more

Food and/or service is good, depending on the day. Sometimes the cheese is melted perfectly on the eggs and the buttermilk pancakes are delicious. But on other days... the order can be incorrect. The cheese is thrown on top of the eggs and not melted correctly. The pancakes are overcooked. The toasted bread, with plastic wrapped around it, is thrown on top of the cheese eggs, leaving it stuck to the cheese which I then have to scrape off the plastic and back onto the eggs. Most times I'll order over the phone and they'll say, "25 minutes", yet when I pick up my order, the food will either not be ready yet or the food is cold, meaning it's been ready and sitting for a while. I keep going back anyway, right? So what the hell. I just hope for more consistency on good food & service in the future. read more

I was nearby with a group of friends and willing to give this place a second chance, and I'm quite glad I did. Service was markedly better than my initial visit back in the spring and the menu had been updated to reflect that the french dip sandwich I complained about had provolone cheese. On this visit, I had the cajun burger with a side of onion rings. The burger was coated in cajun spices and topped with a "cajun relish", which I think was made of jalapeños and spices. Some things claiming to be "cajun" are bland, but this burger had a nice spicy kick. The onion rings tasted like normal frozen rings, but it was nice to have them as a side option. My friends had an assortment of burgers and sandwiches, all liking their food. The waitress had no problem with one friend not ordering anything because he wasn't hungry and we didn't get have trouble splitting checks.
