When I have a choice, I'll almost always pick getting a meal at an A&W over one of the other "big 3 burger chains," even if I have coupons for them (which was the case today). I don't know if their burgers and shakes are considered any better quality, but I prefer them over the other 3 personally. This particular A&W shares its space with a KFC, and all orders are handled at the same spot. My shake came out first, and I noted it came with whipped cream - other A&Ws at which I've dined always ask if you want or don't want the whipped cream. The burger was as I expected, with fresh, cold, crisp toppings. One thing I didn't see anywhere was a display of plasticware. Maybe I missed it, or maybe you only get it if you order food for which they believe you need it. In any event, they got the job done. Ironically, this time the tray on which my food came was lined with a "placemat" of coupons. That will probably make my decision even easier the next time I have a choice. read more

Who says fast food restaurants have to be dirty, dingy places? Increasingly it seems this way today, but fortunately some franchisees and their store managers buck the trend. A&Ws are increasingly rare. Yum! Brands tried to reintroduce them to America in the 2000s, but that attempt mostly failed and the A&W sections of many if not most co-branded locations have disappeared over the last few years. Furthermore, Yum! sold A&W and Long John Silver's off because they didn't want to deal with them anymore. In other words, if you come to this co-branded A&W / KFC, you better not get the later. KFCs are everywhere. You might as well enjoy the old-fashion slice of Americana that is A&W, with their burgers, hot dogs, and root beer. This location was by far the cleanest and brightest fast food restaurant that I have visited in years. There were even some awards hanging by the register that seem to suggest my experience was not a fluke. For a mere $5-something, I received a bacon cheeseburger, medium fries, and a medium drink. That's quite the value these days. Placing my order went quickly and the staff was very friendly. It seems the frosted mugs may have been phased out at this location. I'm not sure if that's a location-specific thing or if it has something to do with the chain's struggles. This didn't really affect my experience, however. Root beer is still tapped next to the soda fountain from a weird contraption that combines a tap handle-esque lever for the regular version and a standard-issue modern push lever for the diet version. Maybe I've gotten so used to diet soda, but I thought the diet root beer tasted delicious. Since the fountain on the customer side (the way it should be!) I went back for a refill. After filling up my soda I started to have some concerns. Where is the ketchup? Where are the napkins? Is this going to be one of those terrible fast food locations where they give me two packets of ketchup and I have to also ask for a napkin or two? I quickly discovered that all was well. The tables actually have ketchup bottles on them, something I don't think I've seen at a fast food restaurant in at least a decade, if ever. My table also came equipped with a napkin dispenser, salt, pepper, and artificial flowers with colorful glass beads in the vase. This is absolutely stellar for the fast food industry today. The dining space itself had tons of light from windows on three sides, and even had TVs showing baseball on ESPN. Again, I can't recall ever seeing this at a fast food restaurant before. My phone also connected to free AT&T wi-fi - not sure if that's for everyone or just AT&T customers, but either way, not a bad offering to have. It's sad that A&W is so rare these days, as the experience I had should be the norm for fast food. read more

I will certainly not be returning. The bread on the burger was rock hard, stale. The chili cheese fries had barely any chili or cheese. Ordered an original A&W root beer, got a diet Pepsi, then they argued when I told them of the mistake. Five Guys is 100 yards away, and I will always go there instead from now on. read more

Stopped here while driving through and was not disappointed. Had KFC stuff (restaurant has both A&W and KFC) and it was as one would expect. This place was very clean and the lady behind the counter was excellent. Very friendly. read more

Finally had the chance to come back in earlier tonight. It felt so long since I had been here, I felt like it had been too long and I had missed so much in my last review of this place. Things turned around since the last time I was in here, although prices have made me feel like coming here wasn't our best decision. I mean, I liked the fact that instead of trays, now everything is served inside A&W take-out bags. IN the two orders I placed and received, both orders came to me in bags. Are you meaning to fill up your garbage bins that quickly with the amount of trash from the bags as they finish up and get put in the garbage inside the shop? On second thought, I had trouble finding a garbage can at first. I would've thought there'd be more than just the one garbage up near the north side of the shop nearest the restroom walkway. My burger was rather skimpy on condiments. I know you aren't your competitor (Wendy's) but even your competitor uses lettuce and mayonnaise on their burgers for presentation and taste and I displeased this burger. It also felt cool to my tastebuds, but then again, I couldn't tell as I've been sick the last day or so, and eating here tonight just wasn't the right time. I also had to vest myself into buying a Regular size fry. Regular size fries are the smaller of the two sizes, but I felt like their smaller sizes were much like the McDonalds Medium fry, but without the added salt. I would've preferred I receive ketchup with my fries though, or have condiment filling stations with ketchup containers. I never received them when I received the fries, but I didn't want them to get too cold. I liked the way the fries were presented. They used the same boxes they use for larger burgers. That kept my fries warm, and I liked the presentation using this style. Few places I know of use this style, and I like this. Although the place wasn't exactly dirty or disorderly, a quick sweep wouldn't have hurt. I didn't see too much of your employees tonight. It seemed like your employees were busy. The one (apparently the manager in red attire) was exchanging his drawer to be counted into the back room but was joking with his other employee (in black attire) as he took out the drawer from the register. I could hear it when I was nearby, and ended up laughing internally with a smile on my face. As for root beer, A&W still abounds here. I always try to get my hand at the root beer here, and it still has me stifled. I felt the filling stations were a little hard to operate with push buttons for diet root beer as well as a lever for something else operating the same part of the station. I'll try to come here again, if I'm in the area. Having had to meet someone coming from Danbury and heading towards Northern Dutchess Co. again, this was a great stop-off spot to meet and interact together, and I really enjoyed myself here. For the most part, a solid 4 stars, but if it wouldn't have been for a few issues, this could've turned into a 5 star review, so sorry. read more

I haven't been to an A&W in over 20 years so I thought I'd give them a try. Sorry to say it wasn't what I remembered and since we had to use the drive through we couldn't even have our root beer in a frosty mug. The burger was below average and the signature sauce was off tasting. Once they have seating inside maybe we'll head back for a couple root beer floats but that's about it. read more

Went here the other day for the first time in years. I forgot how much I like this place. The customer service was really good, and the food was fresh. Didn't go to big on my lunch, I only got the chili cheese fried and corn dog nuggets, and it was amazing. If you're ever down in Fishkill give this place a try. read more

Came here late one night with my daughter who was begging for Chicken Nuggets. I ordered her what I thought were going to be nuggets but they were really little poppers and loaded with pepper. It was so spicy she refused to eat them - tried them myself (I can handle spicy food and my mouth was on fire.) Not cool offering this to little kids!! read more

It seems like lately every time I even think of fast food, the good old belt line has to be increased by a notch. Sure its part of getting older, but so is the knowledge that fast food isn't something we should be eating right? Well who can resist once in a while? Not this guy A&W in Fishkill is tossed together with KFC - a lethal combination as you can order from either end at the same time. When I feel up for a guilty pleasure I'll stop in here and order some KFC crispy fried chicken, biscuits (you have to get a biscuit or they may be something wrong with you), and a side of corn dog nuggets (bite size corn dogs... Go ahead and judge, I'm still going to eat em).. This place tends to get pretty crowded as there are a number of hotels nearby and a Walmart, but they tend to handle the crowds well for the most part (I've often waited long enough to start to question my food choices and start to feel guilty..). The place was clean but the food wasn't that good. My burger was bland and my fries tasted like fish for some reason. I had ordered root beer and it was completely flat it was kind of gross. All together my experience after eating here was very disappointing. I don't know maybe I came on the one day they had a bad day. Maybe I just had a bad meal. I don't know. It's fast Food Plus! I usually go with the cod fillets or chicken meals. The assortment of side dishes assures a different and interesting meal/combo every time! The food is almost always fresh and juicy (although sometimes the chicken can be dry). The deserts are delicious. Always a treat! read more

The employees were friendly enough, I suppose, but their service? Different situation entirely. It's apparently all too difficult to put an order together properly, even with their little computer screen in front of them. Order - Bacon Dbl Cheeseburger (no pickle, no onion) with Chili Cheese Fries and Medium soda. Result - Dbl Cheeseburger PLUS regular cheeseburger, both with pickles and onions, no bacon present and no fries to speak of, let alone the chili and cheese. The only part of my order that was right was the A&W Root Beer I got myself from the draft. With the way the rest of my order went, I'm surprised they were able to hand me the cup properly. They make and sell good burgers and hotdogs at a fair price. I would stay away from the KFC section only because you can get KFC pretty much anywhere else in the Dutchess County. They also make good root beer floats and their fries and cookies are pretty good. The seating area can be nice and clean if they aren't busy with customers or if they didn't get any customers that don't pick up after themselves. A good place to go if you want to have decent burger while I would give the pass on McDonald's and the diner near by. read more
