My sister checked in to see if they were made with onions. We were told that they were not so we went for it. Anyone who follows my reviews knows I have allergies to alliums so we made the point to let our waiter, Matt know. He was quite alert, and I believe made an effort to make sure that he communicated my allergy to the kitchen. It did not take long for our order to come out and it was stunning and massive. See the photograph. Unfortunately, my sister noted almost immediately that there was onion on the plate. How disappointing because it looked so good. We flagged down Matt to let him know. He was very apologetic and swept the plate away back to the kitchen returning a few minutes later to let me know that the hashbrowns were not an option. We replace those with french fries. Overall, the plate was returned about 10 minutes later and looked free of onions. The eggs were cooked the way we asked, and the french fries were crispy, although they appear to have been tossed in cornstarch or flour to make them crispy - that's a coating which I'm not fond of. All in all, the eggs were delicious and the portion size could have fed three people. We ordered a couple of desserts to take away. Grand total was about $50. Yikes. Add the tip and you're up to $65 for breakfast. I recognized that this was a fancier breakfast and not eggs over very easy, etc. but $50 for two breakfast and two desserts two beverages. That's a lot. Even at the price of groceries these days, $65 still goes a long way in the breakfast category. The ambience is classic diner and very clean the service was quite attentive, friendly, and professional although we did have to flag Matt down a couple of times. So if I order online I pay 3 or more dollars for the same item than if I call the order in. That's kinda BS, minus a star. Have been a customer here for over 20 years. Yesterday, I ordered my usual: Tex Mex omelette. I have always loved the way they made the toast. Of course,it was toasted on both sides of the bread. So I sent it back to the kitchen. It came back missing the butter on both sides. I asked for the manager, a relatively young guy, tall, skinny. He claimed that the diner never made toast like that. What am I? In Alice in Wonderland? I've been getting it for years. So I sent it back to the kitchen for the 3rd time. This time it came back slathered in huge gobs of butter, melting all over the eggs. Now, I had mentioned that I can't have massive amounts of butter because I have a gallbladder condition. So I sent it back for the 4th time. This time, the manager came back with the take out plate piled high with all the pieces of toast I had rejected. It was a huge mess. The manager kept saying he was trying to help me. Help me how? Land me up in the hospital with a gallbladder attack? The next thing I knew was that he was sounding like he was going to throw me out of the diner. I took the toast that remained and threw it in the garbage (actually, the manager took most of it and threw it in the garbage.) Of course, by the time I got home, the food was stone cold. I know we are all under a lot of stress lately. Gas prices have been the last straw. But professionals are supposed to contain their emotions when dealing with customers. This place has a HUGE menu, which is generally a red flag for me, but given this was just a dinner order for the night shift, I didn't have huge expectations. I got the chicken and pesto panini. I got a side of fries because it wasn't clear that it accompanied the sandwich, so I ended up with a huge tub of fries I couldn't eat. My coworker got the Philly cheesesteak. While the bread appeared to be well toasted, she didn't care for her sandwich and only ate part of it. This is a hip, retro place with a way back feel inside. Tables have small jukeboxes. Lots of chrome finishes. Clean and bright inside. Could take some cool photos here. The giant menu includes a smorgasbord of sandwiches, salads, pastas, meat dishes, soups, stews, etc. They even have calamari on the menu. But is this where you want to get your calamari? Okay, I'm done with Palace Diner. It's only gone downhill since my experience with their chicken pot pie disaster, but today was even worse than the food. I ordered the Portobello Mushroom Omelette via Uber Eats, with a side of sourdough. Nowhere on the menu did it mention that it was made with marinara, otherwise, I would've left that off. Even worse, they packed the toast in the same container as the omelette, so the bread soaked up... whatever's brown?? But the worst part, is that my order was picked up by a nice African American woman whom was harassed by the manager and accused of stealing my order. They handed her the order from behind the counter, and on her way out, the manager chased after her and accused her of stealing. She told him they had to hand her the order, but he still insisted she bring it back. She asked if it had to do with her race, and that's when he tried to ban her from doing deliveries there. As if he has any control over that. When I called the restaurant to ask if my order was supposed to be made with marinara, I ended up speaking with that same manager. He told me it was optional, I told him I wasn't given that option. He had no resolution for that. When I asked him why he accused my driver of stealing, he said she called him a racist. I told him, it was because he accused her of stealing for no logical reason. He told me to have a great day. So, cool. Food is trash. Customer service is trash. It started from the very beginning- we had to ask three times just to get water because the busboy was not bringing them over for some reason. My food was average at best. I got the Yankee pot roast, which was extremely average. The potato pancakes were bland and had no taste; the meat, beets, and vegetables were just okay. This diner is amazing! One of the best diners I have been to and I am from NJ, the diner capital of the world. Everything we ordered was delicious. The giant pretzel, turkey dinner, Ruben, and breakfast were all hot delicious and well prepared. Corey, our server, he was amazing as well.
