I came to Poughkeepsie for work. I left pretty early and didn't have breakfast. So after a quick search I found "Big Tomato" a local spot. I figured I would help small business and stop in. There is no parking so you have to do street parking. I lucky parked in the front. The outside of the building is dated and a bit hard to see among the other store fronts. Inside, I noticed the place feels like it's from the past. But it was inviting. The waitress told me grad a seat and she asked if I wanted coffee. After she took my order and took it to throne cook in the restaurant. I noticed a TV on the back wall playing modern music, it was great. After, my meal came and I started to eat. The home fries were different. They used a mix of vegetables I've never seen on home fries, but it worked. I was disappointed the ketchup on my table was empty and when they replaced it, it definitely was not Heinz. The egg was not as big as I thought. They used white cheese and that was fine. It just left me wanting more. I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere, but the food didn't move the needle for me. I enjoyed the music, staff, and atmosphere, so those are wins. read more

Wonderful little diner in Poughkeepsie. The food was cooked perfectly, and it felt like a true diner experience. Great pancakes, great eggs, great sauces. The price was also exceptionally reasonable. Next to the definition of "Greasy Spoon" in Webster's, there is a picture of The Big Tomato. This eatery is the epitome of one. But I mean that in the most positive, favorable way. It's a place right out of Mayberry RFD and, at times, my best friend, Pots & Pans, reminded me of Goober - shazam! At other times, he was more like Aunt Bee. The owner, Sicilian John, cooked everything to order. The grill is that tiny. But John is a Maestro with a spatula. P & P and I both ordered the breakfast special - fried egg, cheese, and choice of meat on a hard roll (imported from NYC). Both of us opted for bacon. Comes w coffee for $4.25. We also ordered excellent home fries (almost a cross between HFs and hash browns). And Aunt Bee also had to have French toast. Everything was excellent. Amanda, our server, was affable and capable. Dining at The Big Tomato is like taking a step back in time when people weren't so rushed, and good food took time. Lots and lots (and a lot of) locals. And more locals. Barnie Fife is a regular. The lady with a very Spanish accent said I complain to much and I can order elsewhere then hung up on me. I called back because I have never been rude and ordered a lot. Never asked for a refund. This is not a fancy diner by any means but it is so unapologetically local. I came with two of my friends and our server was attentive and playful. I ordered a breakfast plate with perfectly cooked over easy eggs and a substantial heap of bacon. At $6-$9 for a full breakfast, this cafe is worth visiting. The consistent rotation of regulars interacting with the staff was fun to watch. Don't expect a nice date location but you will get a unique Poughkeepsie experience at the Big Tomato! read more

So I'm on a diner kick and am starting to really like my choices at diners when one of my coworkers said I should try this place. As soon as I saw it from the outside I got a bit worried and the looks on the inside was even older. Looks like I warped back in time to the early 1960's. I started to think cool real original retro. I get the typical grumpy old waitress and get a menu from her for a To go order. As I go down the menu picking my breakfast items, she was like we don't have that anymore, and we're out of the other kind. I looked at her and says what's the use of the menu if it's not updated? She says oh yes it is and points to the signs on the wall. I said great I might as well make up my own stuff with what you got so as I'm ordering Scrambled Eggs and Breakfast potatoes she starts writing down long hand so I have to slow down to let her write. I ended up with a hamburger patty instead of sausage and whole-wheat waffles. What was even more interesting wasa different waitress had to read the order to the old guy on the grill. Everyone that came in seemed to be a regular and the place was very packed for a Saturday morning breakfast. The food tasted fresh and delicious even though I wanted to try other stuff on the menu. I made a wasted trip to this restaurant today. I travelled all the way from Wappingers Falls only to find that the place was closed. It was 8:30 in the morning when I arrived. A large piece of paper was attached to the glass door, informing me that the restaurant was open seven days a week, from 6:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. And yet, the place was closed at 8:30 A.M., without the management providing even so much as a note of explanation. Talk about false advertising. If I had only had my digital camera on my person, then I would have photographed the whole thing, and I would upload the photograph onto this Yelp website, in order to publicly humiliate the management. I wish these people could reimburse me the money I spent on the bus fare. If I had flushed that money down the toilet, then I would have achieved the same end result. read more

It's a classic neighborhood diner smaller than a dining car but comfy. Price ok so far (servings are about 10% smaller than what I am used to at various delis and pizza or bagel joints but, then again, I've only had a sausage-egg-&-cheese with coffee breakfast and the BLT on white w/fries & iced tea for lunch.) Food is tasty, prices can't be beat. It's a casual, greasy spoon diner so don't expect a 5 star experience with new modern decor. Only open for breakfast and lunch, but it's run by a Sicilian and he can cook and uses good quality ingredients for the most part. The owner is the only cook, so food can come out pretty slowly, but just relax and have another cup of coffee. Food is cooked to order. Never ending coffee, juice and home made ice tea. Staff is talkative, friendly; just pipe in and enjoy the banter and gossip. They offer cheap special combos, milk shakes rattled in front of you and even smokes, papers and any daily item you might need. This place is under-hyped, but miles ahead on what you enjoy. Me and my fiancé moved here last year, we both come from places that have great breakfast sandwiches. We tried a couple of places around and all of them faltered a bit. What can I say about The Big Tomato?... Over the years it has become a landmark here in Poughkeepsie. From old timers to the college students, The Big Tomato attracts all walks of life. The staff is super nice and colorful to say the least. John, the owner, always greets you with a mumbled hello but NEVER call him sir! I personally don't stray too far from the eggs and hash browns (Which are amazing BTW) but people say the pancakes are the best.Something about the (small) old cast iron grill in which all the food is cooked, that creates the magic. read more

One of the best old time diners, you know, a place corporate USA tries to imitate and can't (yeah Perkins and Denny's I am looking at you). Not surreal one bite glitzy rare ingredient performance art but as good as it gets for what it does. Within a minute you are the waitresses best friend and she is ready to customize your plate anyway you need. The chef blasts out breakfast and lunch off an iron flattop with an experienced hand that one cannot get from a fifteen year old temp working minimum wage. The pancakes are fluffy and light while the maple syrup appeared a bit watered down since I was almost done with about 1/4 of a bottle after one pancake.
