Next to the definition of "Greasy Spoon" in Webster's, there is a picture of The Big Tomato. This eatery is the epitome of one. But I mean that in the most positive, favorable way. It's a place right out of Mayberry RFD and, at times, my best friend, Pots & Pans, reminded me of Goober - shazam! At other times, he was more like Aunt Bee. The owner, Sicilian John, cooked everything to order. The grill is that tiny. But John is a Maestro with a spatula. P & P and I both ordered the breakfast special - fried egg, cheese, and choice of meat on a hard roll (imported from NYC). Both of us opted for bacon. Comes w coffee for $4.25. We also ordered excellent home fries (almost a cross between HFs and hash browns). And Aunt Bee also had to have French toast. Everything was excellent. Amanda, our server, was affable and capable. Dining at The Big Tomato is like taking a step back in time when people weren't so rushed, and good food took time. Lots and lots (and a lot of) locals. And more locals. Barnie Fife is a regular. And I think I spotted Otis at a corner table. But hurry....a "for sale" sign in the window. Amanda estimates a year, give or take.

This is not a fancy diner by any means but it is so unapologetically local. I came with two of my friends and our server was attentive and playful. I ordered a breakfast plate with perfectly cooked over easy eggs and a substantial heap of bacon. At $6-$9 for a full breakfast, this cafe is worth visiting. The consistent rotation of regulars interacting with the staff was fun to watch. Don't expect a nice date location but you will get a unique Poughkeepsie experience at the Big Tomato!

    What I received

Definitely not good! The sandwiches are soggy and as you can see not enough eggs/ bacon

Sometimes you're just in the mood for some good ole diner food - and this local place is perfect for that. It's got the funky decor, the homey vibes, and the no nonsense attitude. We had omelettes, rye bread and unlimited coffee and it was just what we wanted.

The specials. Add 50 cents if paying with plastic.

The hostess brought us over to a table that needed cleaning and the floor under it, needed sweeping as well. We sat ourselves at the next table that was clean. I don't know how she could miss the mess on the floor. Our waiter took our orders - for me a medium rare burger with a side of onion rings. She ordered the deluxe burger; which comes with french fries and three onion rings, also medium rare. When they eventually came out, both burgers were beyond well done and cold!!! Then our waiter disappeared! I say waiter because I had to wait around for him to eventually be summoned from back in the kitchen by someone who didn't look old enough to be behind the bar. He looked at me like I was making it up. I cut the burger open and it was obvious it was overcooked! He asked if I wanted it replaced?! Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's not what I ordered! What do you think - was in my thought bubble. He never came by to refill the coffee, or ask how everything was? When the bill came, I was charged for the deluxe burger & for side of onion rings. What I ordered was a plain burger with a side of onion rings. The waiter "explained" that's how the computer figures it out. I mentioned to my lunch partner that the boss must be off, today. Everything seemed to be going downhill. It's rarely like that. It'll be a while before we go back, after that slap in the face. This wasn't our first and only meal there. We've been there dozens of times.

While waiting, I noticed another group that stated they were a party of 9 was seated ahead of us, even though there were only 7 people, while we were a party of 6, including children. That left me confused and frustrated, especially since we had called ahead and were patiently waiting our turn. I left feeling disappointed and uncomfortable. I can't speak to why the wait list was handled the way it was, but the experience made me feel that we were treated unfairly. I used to come to this diner often, and because of this experience, I will not be returning. More importantly, I hope no other family has to leave feeling the way we did today. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a special Mother's Day with my family ended in frustration and disappointment. Thank you for ruining what should have been a meaningful day.

More recently, a coworker of mine mentioned she had dined here. Hubs and I had just finished with a gender reveal party in Stony Point and decided to come here then afterwards head up home. Ship L. has a warm, woodsy charm with dark woods, a large bar area to the right as you enter Ship L and has a spacious dining area on the left with an old-school energy that feels just right for a long-standing rest'nt like this one. Service was great from everyone: friendly, attentive and welcoming all around. That said, awesome service and history can only carry a restaurant but so far. We were told their long-standing chef of 30+ yrs either resigned(?) or didn't want to work here(?) and based on what my coworker told me- that she noticed a difference in the cooking not too long ago when she came here. Sadly, it shows. Our escargots were extremely salty. My husband's pork chop was salty. His vegetables also salty. At that point, I held out hope that my Chilean sea bass might at least redeem the evening. No such luck. Salty again. Even the mushroom risotto- which actually had delicious flavor, was overpowered by too much salt. By then, after one appetizer and two entrées all salty, we figured dessert would at least save the night. Nope. I ordered profiteroles with chocolate gelato instead of vanilla and was truly looking forward to them. Except, the profiteroles were rock hard. The chocolate drizzle tasted like Hershey's syrup, making the dessert taste cheap for a restaurant of this type. My husband, who always goes for sorbet, ordered the mango flavor- but to me it tasted like an unripe mango blended with sugar just to make it palatable.. If you're from the Caribbean or know a true mango taste, you know exactly what I mean. And don't even get me started on the cocktails- they tasted more like juice than actual drinks. At the end of the night, we realized we weren't imagining things. A $245 dinner with weak cocktails, overly salty food and disappointing desserts was no balance for a restaurant with such a long-standing history. For that reason... we out.

Although I'm normally Team Savory at breakfast, I make an exception if it's my first time visiting a place with pancake in the name. Village is located in a mall near the Wappingers Falls and Poughkeepsie border. The inside was very clean and nicely decorated. Service was very good. Although my Turtle Pancakes were well constructed and looked fantastic, the pancake base was not great. It had an unpleasing mouth feel, lacked fluffiness and didn't have great flavor. My wife had a similar reaction. I don't know if this was a "one off" bad batter, but we were surprised that a place specializing in pancakes didn't have this component of their food on automatic slam dunk mode. The toppings were tasty. I only ate about one-third of my pancakes. Partly because it was a large serving. Partly because the pancakes weren't really enjoyable. Maybe they're usually better, but I couldn't say. 2 Stars for the pancakes themselves, but in light of the toppings, service and atmosphere, I'll rate my experience at 2.5 Stars overall.
