Next to the definition of "Greasy Spoon" in Webster's, there is a picture of The Big Tomato. This eatery is the epitome of one. But I mean that in the most positive, favorable way. It's a place right out of Mayberry RFD and, at times, my best friend, Pots & Pans, reminded me of Goober - shazam! At other times, he was more like Aunt Bee. The owner, Sicilian John, cooked everything to order. The grill is that tiny. But John is a Maestro with a spatula. P & P and I both ordered the breakfast special - fried egg, cheese, and choice of meat on a hard roll (imported from NYC). Both of us opted for bacon. Comes w coffee for $4.25. We also ordered excellent home fries (almost a cross between HFs and hash browns). And Aunt Bee also had to have French toast. Everything was excellent. Amanda, our server, was affable and capable. Dining at The Big Tomato is like taking a step back in time when people weren't so rushed, and good food took time. Lots and lots (and a lot of) locals. And more locals. Barnie Fife is a regular. And I think I spotted Otis at a corner table. But hurry....a "for sale" sign in the window. Amanda estimates a year, give or take.

This is not a fancy diner by any means but it is so unapologetically local. I came with two of my friends and our server was attentive and playful. I ordered a breakfast plate with perfectly cooked over easy eggs and a substantial heap of bacon. At $6-$9 for a full breakfast, this cafe is worth visiting. The consistent rotation of regulars interacting with the staff was fun to watch. Don't expect a nice date location but you will get a unique Poughkeepsie experience at the Big Tomato!

    What I received

Definitely not good! The sandwiches are soggy and as you can see not enough eggs/ bacon

Sometimes you're just in the mood for some good ole diner food - and this local place is perfect for that. It's got the funky decor, the homey vibes, and the no nonsense attitude. We had omelettes, rye bread and unlimited coffee and it was just what we wanted.

The specials. Add 50 cents if paying with plastic.

Best Breakfast in Poughkeepsie. My favorite: short stack of pancakes, lots of butter, bacon, and vanilla milk.

A star for every major artery I clogged with my glorious, classic short-order style breakfast. A real old greasy spoon.

Of course,it was toasted on both sides of the bread. In addition, there was very light butter on both sides. Absolutely delicious. Yesterday, I checked my order & found the bread was toasted only on 1 side and untoasted on the other. So I sent it back to the kitchen. It came back missing the butter on both sides. I asked for the manager, a relatively young guy, tall, skinny. He claimed that the diner never made toast like that. What am I? In Alice in Wonderland? I've been getting it for years. So I sent it back to the kitchen for the 3rd time. This time it came back slathered in huge gobs of butter, melting all over the eggs. Now, I had mentioned that I can't have massive amounts of butter because I have a gallbladder condition. So I sent it back for the 4th time. This time, the manager came back with the take out plate piled high with all the pieces of toast I had rejected. It was a huge mess. The manager kept saying he was trying to help me. Help me how? Land me up in the hospital with a gallbladder attack? The next thing I knew was that he was sounding like he was going to throw me out of the diner. I took the toast that remained and threw it in the garbage (actually, the manager took most of it and threw it in the garbage.) Of course, by the time I got home, the food was stone cold. I know we are all under a lot of stress lately. Gas prices have been the last straw. But professionals are supposed to contain their emotions when dealing with customers. I have read some of the other posts. It seems there are quite a few unhappy customers. I don't want to sever my longstanding relationship with the Palace Diner over what amounts to a food fight over toast. It's really sad.

The hostess brought us over to a table that needed cleaning and the floor under it, needed sweeping as well. We sat ourselves at the next table that was clean. I don't know how she could miss the mess on the floor. Our waiter took our orders - for me a medium rare burger with a side of onion rings. She ordered the deluxe burger; which comes with french fries and three onion rings, also medium rare. When they eventually came out, both burgers were beyond well done and cold!!! Then our waiter disappeared! I say waiter because I had to wait around for him to eventually be summoned from back in the kitchen by someone who didn't look old enough to be behind the bar. He looked at me like I was making it up. I cut the burger open and it was obvious it was overcooked! He asked if I wanted it replaced?! Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's not what I ordered! What do you think - was in my thought bubble. He never came by to refill the coffee, or ask how everything was? When the bill came, I was charged for the deluxe burger & for side of onion rings. What I ordered was a plain burger with a side of onion rings. The waiter "explained" that's how the computer figures it out. I mentioned to my lunch partner that the boss must be off, today. Everything seemed to be going downhill. It's rarely like that. It'll be a while before we go back, after that slap in the face. This wasn't our first and only meal there. We've been there dozens of times.

The reason for the 4 stars was the service. Our waiter was very friendly, but forgot many things with my family's order. My mom ordered coffee with her dessert and they never came by with a refill for her. The Pepsi was not carbonated and even after they gave us a new one, it was still flat.( maybe something wrong with the machine?) I would come back, and hope for better service next time.

Although I'm normally Team Savory at breakfast, I make an exception if it's my first time visiting a place with pancake in the name. Village is located in a mall near the Wappingers Falls and Poughkeepsie border. The inside was very clean and nicely decorated. Service was very good. Although my Turtle Pancakes were well constructed and looked fantastic, the pancake base was not great. It had an unpleasing mouth feel, lacked fluffiness and didn't have great flavor. My wife had a similar reaction. I don't know if this was a "one off" bad batter, but we were surprised that a place specializing in pancakes didn't have this component of their food on automatic slam dunk mode. The toppings were tasty. I only ate about one-third of my pancakes. Partly because it was a large serving. Partly because the pancakes weren't really enjoyable. Maybe they're usually better, but I couldn't say. 2 Stars for the pancakes themselves, but in light of the toppings, service and atmosphere, I'll rate my experience at 2.5 Stars overall.

The business is still operating well, bringing in a decent amount of customers which I've noticed passing by in the mall hallway, adding additional upgrades to the interior and menu, and also great customer service. I'm very thrilled to see the menu and the offerings, as many just stick out. Every meal I've gotten has been very good, and the staff work hard for it. I was thrilled to see on our recent visit how attentive our waitress was, she kept checking in and had wonderful manners. Unfortunately, we never got her name. Also, an older busboy and server had wonderful manners and didn't get his name. Something to keep in mind is that some of the items are pricey compared to the last couple of years. We found some items at a great price. For a fairly quick and easy meal, consider this stop.
