My husband and I went to our Easter dinner to the Ship Lantern Inn. My initial report was bad. The service was exceptionally great. My only complaint is that I did not get what I expected. The only thing that was really bad is that I ordered NY Style cheesecake with raspberry glaze When I had it when we got home there was no glaze and the cheesecake was not good. I only knew of Ship Lantern Inn through my husband, who used to drive this route back in the late '80s/early '90s while stationed at a naval facility in Newburgh, NY. More recently, a coworker of mine mentioned she had dined here. Hubs and I had just finished with a gender reveal party in Stony Point and decided to come here then afterwards head up home. Ship L. has a warm, woodsy charm with dark woods, a large bar area to the right as you enter. This place has a spacious dining area on the left with an old-school energy that feels just right for a long-standing rest'nt like this one. Service was great from everyone: friendly, attentive and welcoming all around. That said, awesome service and history can only carry a restaurant but so far. We were told their long-standing chef of 30+ yrs either resigned(?) or didn't want to work here(?) and based on what my coworker told me- that she noticed a difference in the cooking not too long ago when she came here. Sadly, it shows. Our escargots were extremely salty. My husband's pork chop was salty. His vegetables also salty. At that point, I held out hope that my Chilean sea bass might at least redeem the evening. No such luck. Salty again. Even the mushroom risotto- which actually had delicious flavor, was overpowered by too much salt. By then, after one appetizer and two entrées all salty, we figured dessert would at least save the night. Nope. I ordered profiteroles with chocolate gelato instead of vanilla and was truly looking forward to them. Except, the profiteroles were rock hard. The chocolate drizzle tasted like Hershey's syrup, making the dessert taste cheap for a restaurant of this type. My husband, who always goes for sorbet, ordered the mango flavor- but to me it tasted like an unripe mango blended with sugar just to make it palatable.. If you're from the Caribbean or know a true mango taste, you know exactly what I mean. And don't even get me started on the cocktails- they tasted more like juice than actual drinks. At the end of the night, we realized we weren't imagining things. A $245 dinner with weak cocktails, overly salty food and disappointing desserts was no balance for a restaurant with such a long-standing history. For that reason... we out. read more

Great food and ambience at this place. I tried the escargot, was expecting the typical butter/oil and garlic so I was a little disappointed. It didn't register well in my brain. Whenever I have a chance, I always try the Osso Bucco. It wasn't as good as the best ones I've tasted, but it's still good. The meat was tender and the sauce was good. I was just there for my birthday a few days ago. Had been there once before and really enjoyed the seafood sampler appetizer. Decided to make that the main course for my birthday dinner the other day. This time the food didn't quite match up to my first visit both in freshness and taste. The clams were chewy and the oysters were dry of any juices on this visit. The rest of the platter was enjoyable. I think a mignonette sauce would have been a nice compliment to the shellfish. I didn't mind any of that as much as I was offended by the unmistakable smell of a used adult diaper as soon as we entered the restaurant. Which immediately gave a flash back of my previous/first visit. We were seated next to an older gentleman and his family and I was looking daggers at him throughout my meal, thinking he was to blame for the stench I was smelling. Turns out he wasn't at fault. I felt so bad for hating him that first dinner. The servers were very attentive, but must be nose blind to that smell. I sincerely marvel at how no one else seemed bothered at all by the odor. We went to this restaurant twenty years ago and never went back. Heard it had been renovated and decided to try again yesterday. Walked into the first door to be greeted by fake florals and Christmas tree lights. Opened the second door and saw the same dark place and was overwhelmed by an all encompassing odor that made us turn on our heels and go to Crew in Poughkeepsie. The place is very charming with accents all around which are boat themed. Our server was very nice and attentive and she was very knowledgeable about the menu and specials. The overall atmosphere was a bit more on the formal side but reminded me up upscale golf club vibes. A lot of polo shirts & button ups on the men and a lot of dresses on the women. It was quiet and made for a relaxing dinner. We opted to get the 100 year anniversary dinner for two which consisted of two surf & turf meals with filet mignon, lobster tail, potatoes and seasonal veggies and it came with two salads and two desserts! Before our dinner came out and almost immediately after we sat down we got half a loaf of fresh bread. The salad was nice and the dressing tasted homemade. The dinners were perfect! The filets were so tender they fell apart with the touch of your fork and the lobster was a good size and served with butter which had its own little tea-light chaffing dish. The mashed potatoes were creamy and the veggies were a nice touch! Overall great portion size as well! We took one dessert home but ate one there and it was a chocolate torte of sorts which was served with whipped cream and some berries! It was very rich chocolate and the berries tasted fresh! We also ordered an espresso which was nice with minimal bitterness so you know it was made correctly! I can't believe I have lived 30 minutes away from this gem for years and tonight is the first time we went. To be honest my wife and I were saving the inn for a romantic night away but tonight we were shopping as a family right by the restaurant and everyone was dressed nice so we decided to try it. Are you kidding me with this joint? I'm so glad we went in. The service was over the top, we had a waitress and a maitre'd waiting on us hand and foot. The food was also an excellent experience- I started with a shrimp cocktail which had 2 different cocktail sauces. I then had the osso bucco on a bed of risotto - not to be missed. As always, every restaurant begins with five stars. On the plus side: lovely ambience for a winter meal with the roaring fireplace in the three season room. The restaurant has been here for a very long time and could use some minor updates. I love the, pine paneling and the clubby vibe, but some of the tchotchkes really need to go. This was a special supper for my birthday celebration and the host was my son and daughter, so I do not know what the total tally for the meal was for five of us. Most of the items on the menu ranged in the $25-$35 per plate range for an entrée. Service was very pleasant, and the weight staff was dressed appropriately. Tables were crammed a bit too close together, but otherwise it was a cozy environment, and the crackling fire made for a lovely backdrop. We did not get into too many appetizers - just a Caprese salad. Unfortunately, the mozzarella was spongy and almost tasted like it had been frozen previously. I would pass on that one. Entrées: my daughter and sister ordered the short ribs, special with butternut squash, risotto, and steam vegetables. Nicely presented, and they were very pleased with the dish. My niece had the salmon, which appeared to be a bit overcooked. In fact, I don't recall the waitress asking for a temperature on the salmon. The glaze looked nice, and she seemed pleased with it. Now, for the disappointment: the special was tomahawk steak for two. my son, and I decided to go for it. What a total disappointment this was: all of the meals arrived to the table and sat getting cold in front of our guests, while the meter D fumbled with the tomahawk steak across the dining room. Table service would have been much more impressive and serving the tomahawk steak cut and placed back on the bone in the center of the table would have been the right thing to do. Unfortunately, the steak was carved in a very clumsy fashion, and the temperature was significantly off.we ordered rare to medium and got rare to raw. There was no sear on the outside of the steak and the pieces were dumped on ceremoniously on our individual plates with fat side on appealingly present. The fat on the steak was not properly rented nor cooked. This made for a very unappealing experience - chewy and rubbery texture on the steak. I do not know what my son paid for this special cut, but whatever it was, it was not worth it. The dessert options were very nice - they had a dessert sampler for two for about $29 which included three selections. Our table of five did well with two of those and we all shared but the waitress forgot to bring individual plates so the devil was in the detail. this is a solid 3 1/2 star restaurant but you do have to be careful about what your selection is. What a beautiful Christmas Eve dinner!! It was just going to be hubby and I so we decided to treat ourselves to a really nice dinner. The Ship Lantern Inn is a beautiful restaurant- inside and out. Such a rustic and charming building and decorated beautifully for Christmas. The fireplace added the perfect Christmasy glow. We were so warmly welcomed as we entered and brought to our table right away. Warm bread was brought to our table and our waitress came right over for the drinks order. I opted for the Orange Sunset - so delicious! Hubby and I both had prime rib - both steaks were cooked to perfection and so flavorful and tender. With the house salad, bread and dinner, I was too full for dessert. The waitstaff is so attentive and friendly. I'm truly looking forward to going back. Worthy of all 5 stars!! read more

We had the appetizer- stuffed clams, we enjoyed them. I had the flounder with crabmeat. The flounder was fried with a flour breading and had no taste. It had 3 lumps of Cold crab on top and a white sauce and 2 large asparagus sticks. I must have put salt at least 3 times. The mashed potatoes were cold on the inside and the veggies consisted of one carrot slice and 2 spears of squash, they were room temperature But the plates were very hot. Clearly they had the food under lamps, not entirely sure why and there was one other table occupied. The place looked and smelled OLD and musty. The price was high for the subpar food they provided. We took my father here for his 70th birthday. Everything was just ok. My duck was dry (as was the weird wild rice/chickpea thing on the side) , my husband's steak was meh, the caprese salad was a $14 half a tomato with a small chunk of mozzarella, the escargot was not great. My mom (who has a notoriously very small appetite) finished her sea bass, "not because it was good per se, but because it was tiny". The staff was nice, but they definitely forgot about us a few times because we were outside (water, taking our order, the bill etc). The food was simply not good enough for the price they were asking for. If you want to charge that much, either do something innovative or do something really well and they did neither. read more

We came here for a nice dinner during my sister's bachelorette weekend. The bread served came with a fantastic dip made of olive oil and various spices, perhaps sundried tomatoes? I wasn't exactly sure what was in it. I shared the ahi tuna tartare appetizer with someone and it tasted delicious. I got the seafood stew for myself. There was an insane amount of seafood in the stew, which was great. It said it was served over angel hair pasta but there was barely any noodles at all. However, the quality of the seafood was superb. My sister did not like her cocktail, saying it was very syrupy and another one of the girls in our party complained about her drink as well and sent it back. I personally did not order a cocktail. I am so disappointed that my previous five star reviews are now a thing of the past. It seriously pains me to give this place 3 stars, but I really have no choice after last night's visit. I made reservations for my partner's birthday celebration dinner for 6:00PM. We arrived to a packed parking lot, so we knew it was crowded and it seemed there was a private party going on as well. We were seated promptly and service started on point as usual. We asked for the wine list, made our choice, and that was taken care of. We were told about the specials and decided on our menu. We both ordered soup, and decided to share the stuffed clams as our appetizer. The next few minutes seemed to have set the pace for this 3 star review. Our soup was brought to the table with our appetizer! Seriously? Even low end restaurants don't commit that type of major service error! I was going to ask them to take it back and keep the appetizer warm until we finished our soup, but who wants dried out stuffed clams! Normally, our waiter (or someone else) comes over after each course is delivered and tasted to make sure everything is ok. That never happened. No one even glanced our way. We finished our soups and our now room-temp clams, poured our own wine, and waited. Someone cleared the table and within a minute we had our salads, dropped off with a bang (almost thrown), wordlessly. Soups were good. Stuffed clams were really good, and would have been better had they been hot. Please let people know, when they ask to share an appetizer, that there are only 3 clams. We would have changed it had someone told us. Salad was ok - just lettuce and a few bell pepper strips. I forgot to mention that the bread has changed, and now it appears to be sliced white bread. It was still warm and delicious, but not as good as our previous visits. Also, during our meal, we had to move our chairs so a couple of waiters could get tablecloths out of the cabinets behind us. Really? Entrees were delivered quickly. His osso bucco was absolutely delicious - exactly the same as in previous visits. I went with something different and tried the Calabrian Seafood stew over angel hair pasta. It looked amazing when they put it down in front of me. Then I looked closer. Before I started eating, I had to remove one unopened mussel, and a couple pieces of broken shell along with a broken mussel. The person plating the dish would have noticed it had they been paying attention. The seafood was pretty good. The shrimp were on the verge of being overcooked, along with some of the clams. Mussels and lobster were good. The angel hair pasta was perfectly al dente, but it didn't seem like the right pasta to go with the sauce. The sauce was pretty good, but completely overloaded with onions. I'd never get that dish or any seafood entree there again. Someone who I presume to be the manager asked how everything was after we started our entrees, and when I said "pretty good" he asked if he could do something to fix it. At that point we long finished our soup and room-temp apps, and I had already dealt with the bad mussels and so there was nothing he could change or fix. Once again, we ended up pouring our own wine for the entire meal. The only time someone poured (after the first glass) was when they cleared the table and noticed a tiny bit left at the bottom of the bottle. After they cleared the table, I stepped away for a moment. I went over to the gentleman who was seating people to ask him to let our waiter know that it was my partner's birthday, and that I would like a candle put in his dessert. He stepped away, and came back a moment later to tell me it was all arranged and taken care of. I thanked him and went back to join my partner. (I found out later that one of the waiters, the woman who started a day before, actually walked over to my partner at that point before I even got back to the table, and said "I hear it's your birthday". Well thanks for blowing that surprise!!!!! Someone please teach her some common sense!!!) So anyway, he ordered creme brulee and coffee, and I ordered a cappuccino. Coffee came out - and it was excellent. Then came the creme brulee - with NO CANDLE. Nothing. What the heck happened to my SIMPLE request that was "taken care of"??? At that point, it was the last straw. I got up to look for the gentleman who "took care of" this, and instead found the manager. I will say they handled the apologies well. The person I originally told apologized, as did the waiter who apparently dropped the ball AFTER she mentioned the birthday to my partner. We were offered a free drink, and our dessert and coffees were comped, which was nice. Unfortunately, my partner still never got the one small simple thing he enjoys - a candle for his birthday celebration. All in all, we will likely put this place at the bottom of our list for any future visits. read more

Last evening we rediscovered how great a meal can be. I must begin with the staff and its attention to the diners, its knowledge of the menu and the pleasantness they exuded. From beginning to end they were the glue that made a wonderful dining experience possible. We had a quiet corner table in a side dining area that was just perfect for us. The food was outstanding. We had clams casino which was a good as any we have ever had. Goodness as I type I'm salivating just remembering the taste. The soup of the day came next. Vichyssoise! Cool, refreshing and delicious! We had forgotten how good this potato soup could be. For the main courses we went our different ways. My wife had the Slow Roasted Mallard Duckling with an Orange sauce with a medley of vegetables and Toasted Orzo and wild rice pilaf. It was cooked to perfection and tasted great. I had the Pan Roasted Double Cut Hatfield Pork Chop with a Burnt Orange and Maker's 28.5 Mark Caramel Pan Au Jus with a medley of veggies and Hudson Valley Apple Chutney -- WOW! is all I can say. What a great tasting piece of meat with a wonderful combination of flavors. While the desserts part of the menu was very tempting we were full and very happy and satisfied. When my wife & I travel upstate we are so happy to see that the Inn is still operating...we're hopeful that it will go on forever. On a busy weekend late afternoon, a small crew kept everything together and good drink, good food and service were all ours. We each ordered the prix fixe menu and got great value. Came here on a Friday night for dinner and I have to say it was all very well organized.. we were seated immediately (yes we had reservations) and since it was restaurant week, we partook in the menu. The choices all sounded delicious. I ended up getting the shrimp appetizer and the orecchiette with crab meat for the main course. As for dessert, I got the tiramisu. My hubby ordered the truffle risotto for the app and the steak for the entree. He got the apple crisp for dessert. Our waiter was very attentive and the food was spot on. Everything was so, so good. We started with the French Onion Soup, then got the Black Angus Sirloin with Bone Marrow Butter, and Braised Beef Shortrib. The short rib was one of the best I ever had- just so, so tender. The steak was so good, I thought it should've been more expensive. The soup was picture perfect, and also not too salty. The child's mac and cheese literally looked like it was from the blue box, but if the kid ate it fine, that's all you need. The side salad was honestly a little sad, but the entrees and soup made up for it. The restaurant has a lot of charm and history. The Ship's Latern is a well established, old school historic restaurant on Route 9W south in Milton, NY. The table service is friendly, informative and attentive. The food is classic in style, and presentation. We enjoyed creatively delicious cocktails, Pellegrino sparkling mineral water, as well as the Boylans Creme soda. The seafood risotto with crab and shrimp appetizer was tasty, but was not cooked with arborio rice. The double cut pork chop was nicely seared and quite large. The short ribs looked great but were not tender, and a bit stringy in texture. The soft shell crabs provencal special was good and the sauce included sweet red and yellow cherry tomatoes. We enjoyed eating outside under the tent. Although we didn't have dessert, there seemed to be a good list of offerings. The bar inside is classic nautical style and quite cozy. We were in the area for a short stay at a nearby inn & spa, and we were hungry - we figured we would give this old world spot a try. So glad we did. Something for everyone! The old world charm extends to table-side prep stations - your Caesar salad from scratch, sizzling steak or bananas foster flambe - add to the incredible ambience. Ok - on to lunch - as this place is clearly classic - we both started with French Onion Soup. We need to steal the family recipe as this was simply outstanding - hot, bubbly and deep under the cheese was a heavenly broth great flavors. For mains, a fork tender veal marsala in a well flavored mushroom sauce, served with two veggies (spinach and baby asparagus) and creamy smooth mashed potatoes. Great Ambiance. I had the Short Ribs and my fiancé had the Salmon. Both were Amazing and so flavorful. Portions are very large, we definitely could have split an Entree.
