CLEANLINESS: 5 stars. A gentleman was cleaning when I arrived. The floors could use an industrial cleaning treatment ( this is beyond a standard mop-up). Bathroom has an odd odor, but it had been recently cleaned. Greeting was professionally polite. The hostess let us know that they are short/staffed. ( Appreciated). My order is a simple no fail diner favorite: eggs over easy with bacon and home fries, rye toast, strawberry jam. I'll take pastries home to the family. Don't eat here if you have a food allergy because the management will make you sick. They didn't listen to my food allergy when I ordered. I caught it immediately when the order came wrong. Typical diner food. Our waitress was really nice and attentive, she even told us when she was going on her break and that someone would be checking on her tables. This is where things fell apart. No one checked on us at all. One in our party needed a refill and we also were pretty much done eating and ready for the check but didn't get anything sorted until our waitress got back. YUM YUM and can I say it again? YUM! Ever since my visits to New York to see my boyfriend, I have become spoiled by awesome diners around the greater NYC area. However, I think we might just have hit the jackpot with Poughkeepsie's Palace Diner on my last visit! Not only is the food and service courteous and attentive, but they are also festively decorated for Halloween (with a horror writer boyfriend, this is a definite plus!), and super clean, abiding by all COVID precautions and mandates. And yes, the food is delicious. Fans of Red Line Diner, Table Talk Diner, and Daily Planet Diner might recognize the menu, as Palace was once owned by the Vanikiotis Group, who runs these illustrious local late night staples. Even though Palace has come under new ownership, the high quality menu chock full of crazy good eats remains the same, and for that I am very grateful! The diner is open 24/7, and just a stone's throw from downtown Poughkeepsie and Marist College. If you come for late night grub during the school year, you'll be treated to some great people watching for sure! We sat promptly in a clean booth for two toward the back of the restaurant. Our server Autumn was AWESOME! Actually one of the best waitresses I've encountered in recent memory while in New York, and we go out for food frequently when I am in town. She was funny, sweet, and attentive, and our food arrived in a reasonable time frame with a smile. I loved my Matzoh Ball Soup, which tasted fresh and homemade, and the entrees were giant and delish: Crab Cake Sliders for the boyfriend (an appetizer portion, but hearty enough for a meal), and a Turkey Burger with some of the best sweet potato fries on the side I've ever had! So good, especially at 2 AM! We were stuffed afterward, but I took a slice of their carrot cake to go. They make all the desserts in-house, which is a far cry from other diners, which have gross pies that taste like they were baked in 1958 - literally. Ick. This diner deserves 0 stars. This USED to be a great diner! Now it's horrible and has gone completely down hill from what it used to be. We plan to never order from them again. We gave the diner another chance, but clearly we will NOT be going back. We had a wonderful waitress, Virginia, who quit on her shift, because of the manager. The blonde manager needs to learn how to RESPECT her employees as well as the patrons who are dining in the restaurant. Instead the blonde screams and shouts right in the middle of the dining floor. She began yelling at our waitress over something we ordered to go. Apparently you can't order kids meals to go?? News to me. It was completely rude and uncalled for. Yep nothings changed since my last review. This time I was here they had a bus boy working as a waiter, who kept running away in the middle of the order with no explanation, such as when he dumped the menus on the table he asked can I get you something to drink before I'm even in my chair, so I do the usual and ask for water until I can see if they have alcohol specials or they have coke or Pepsi because you know they rarely have both at same store. He ran off before my wife could ask for a coffee. Next was the bathroom was in the back behind a door to a hallway when I opened the hallway door it smelled like a dead body or same smell when I walk into a Cemetary Mosuleam. The parking lot by the handicap spaces has a creepy open door down to the basement with rat traps around it. Could be were the dead body smell from the bathroom is coming from. Chili burger was good, onion rings were good, cole slaw was decent, French Fries were to crispy they bend fries like Red Robin's. read more

Absolutely the best diner experience I have had in a long time. Was seated quickly by friendly staff, waited on within 2 minutes, with recommendations given when requested. My BLT club was delicious, generous and well made. My daughters chicken soup was "better than homemade" and delivered at the right time, with my food, as that was her meal and not an appetizer - our waitress understood and was very friendly and efficient. The cheesecake was superior and with fresh strawberries by request, and my coffee was refilled with a smile. Really a pleasant meal, and made me wish I lived closer. Will be back again when we are in the area to enjoy a dinner next time, as the specials all looked so appetizing. read more

We thought it would be fun to have Thanksgiving dinner at a Diner this year so we picked the Palace Diner as it was midway between Albany and Nyack so our two families could meet for a shared holiday meal. I should add that our younger son and his wife drove almost three hours in holiday traffic from Brooklyn to join us. We had a 5 PM reservation for eight and after a nice pre- dinner walk in the nearby Longview Park along the Hudson River, we called the Diner to see if we could come earlier, and the we're very accommodating. That's when the problems started. They were very crowded, and the service was very slow - we got there at 4:30 PM, and struggled getting our dessert, check and departure at 7:00 PM. I will jump to what was worst as I'd say that five of the eight of us had to worst possible meals you could ever have anywhere. The highlights were undercooked sweet potatoes, too much sauce in a stir fry when it was specially requested for "light on the sauce", and the overly salted and reheated prime rib you can imagine - and I love prime rib. I could kick myself for not sending it back and not ordering something else, but it took more than an hour for it to arrive and I didn't want to make it worse for our family by lengthening the time spent there. I should note that I love diners. The best eggs, burgers, pancakes, soups and perhaps hundreds of goo hearty meals can be enjoyed at most diners, but this was to worst Diner, and dinner, experience I have ever had. They didn't even remove the $6 cost of the sweet potatoes my wife sent back and refused a replacement order. read more

The food was good. However, I found a hair in my salad. It was SO gross. They gave me a new one that was smaller than the hairy salad. I couldn't eat it so I brought it home. So today I had the pleasure of dining at the Palace Diner for the first time. Now most will say yeah it's a diner but I will say it was a excellent experience. First off they are open 24 hours but stop table service at 2AM which is fine for me since I will usually be stopping in after work to pick up an order around 1:30AM. Tonight we dined in for a late meal. We were met by Mica? (Sorry if I misspelled it. This guy was so polite I was blown away with his upbeat personality and eagerness to serve. We ordered Hanger steak sliders w/ sweet potato fries and a chicken Cranberry wrap with fries. Hanger steak was medium rare and tender pieces of steak with a nice char on outside topped with Gorgonzola cheese and arugula . 3 slider were perfect portion. Mica brought me some maple syrup to dunk the sweet potato fries into and it hit pretty hard. The chicken wrap so stuffed full of goodness it was enough to eat half there and take half home with a good amount of fries as well. We observed a very brisk pick up service happening while we dined so it seems like this is a lot of people's go to spot. I know it will be mine moving forward. read more

I grew up going to diners every weekend, having both bad and good experiences and food. Unfortunately my trip to the Palace Diner tonight rates as my worst trip ever, and unfortunately it has very little to do with the food. We arrived at the diner at 9:45 PM, and were promptly seated. Our first sign that something was amiss was when our waiter took our orders, but when repeating it back to us, had mistakes with details on almost each of our orders. We each corrected him and he seemed to write them down - we chalked this up to him possibly being new. 5 min later, he returned to tell us that one of the items was unavailable - by just pointing to it on the menu and saying "we don't have it." Then we waited for a full 45 min at least. Our waiter never checked in with us. For reference, we ordered an omelet, a grilled cheese, a quesadilla, and an appetizer sampler - arguably some of the quickest items on the menu. We had to flag down another waitress who told us that there was a rush of online orders and they were backed up. We asked how much longer and our waiter just said "everything is ready, it's the appetizer holding you up." Another 10 min pass and all the tables around us get food. Finally, the appetizer sampler, sides of fries, and quesadillas arrive but now it's the omelet and grilled cheese that are delayed. We wait another 10 min and eventually the sandwich and eggs arrive. I had ordered a spinach , American cheese, and bacon omelet with white toast - but I only received an omelet with only spinach. I told the waiter that my order was incorrect and he went back to the kitchen without asking any questions and came back with just a side of bacon. He said "the kitchen messed up and they said sorry." I said that I appreciate it but while I wanted the omelet I ordered (he did not offer to have it remade), I didn't want to wait another hour for it and would prefer to send my order back since I hadn't taken a bite. He then said "well if you send it back, I have to pay for it. And it's not my fault." My friend then stood up for me and said "I don't think it's fair to guilt trip her for not wanting to pay for what she didn't order." He took the plate and walked away. At this time, everyone else was eating and made note that every order was incorrect - the BBQ chicken quesadilla had no BBQ sauce, the arugula on the grilled cheese that we requested be left off was on it, and there was no marinara sauce for the appetizer sampler. Unfortunately from this point forward, our waiter avoided our table, so we just tried to eat quickly to then leave. The waitress from earlier came over to apologize and ask if there was anything she could do, which I appreciated, but I just explained that we wanted to finish, pay, and leave. Eventually, she saw that our waiter never returned to our table and asked if we needed the check - when we said yes, we heard her say to our waiter "when their food is so late, you at least have to keep an eye on them afterwards." I was just going to chalk it up to being a rough night and let it go, but as we were waiting at the front to pay, now wearing masks because we were up from the table, our waiter passed by, clearly talking about me to another person and in said "and she said 'well if it doesn't have bacon I don't want it!'" He put on a whiny voice when he was misquoting me. Now listen, I know in a world of Karen's it could be easy to say I was being too tough on the waiter. But to be clear, we still tipped 20%, we only asked for the omelet I did not touch to be taken off the bill, and we paid for everything else. We didn't make a scene. But to hear that walking out was disrespectful and ridiculous. My friends and I will not be back. read more

This native New Yorker has lived in Philadelphia and both north and south Jersey so I've visited dozens of diners in my 60+ plus years! Just recently moved to Poughkeepsie and friends told me, "you've got to try Palace Diner!" Ordered breakfast for my daughter and me yesterday. The restaurant's not far from me, but it was cold and rainy. The good news: The order was correct. It wasn't as hot as it should have been but it wasn't cold, so that's OK. My daughter enjoyed her eggs Benedict. I enjoyed my ham and cheese omelet. The not-so-good news? The home fries are sad. Slightly undercooked, completely under-seasoned. Just thin discs of potato; no onions, peppers, no crispiness, no real flavor, and underdone. The toast was BARELY toasted, but slathered with butter so it was limp, soggy and barely warm. As a customer AND a Dasher, when I go to a restaurant I expect to be treated with courtesy and respect, 2 things this place explicitly lack. Yesterday I walked in for a delivery order, and I stood at the counter for 10 min before asking someone to come assist me. Every server avoided eye contact and wouldn't talk to me even when I tried to get their attention. I motioned to a server that I can see this is my order sitting at the counter can I take it because clearly no one is coming to assist, and time is money. And it's funny how they acknowledge you when you say this is my order and motion that you would like to take it. And I was given a rude "no no no from the man's finger and facial expression, and ofcourse he just stood there. Didn't come help or anything. Just told me no. So now I'm a little frustrated. Finally I said to another server, "Can you get someone to help me, PLEASE? I have been standing here for like 10 minutes, THANK YOU." (please not the words "please" & "thank you" were used). The hostess comes out in a tissy, publicly yelling at me, making all her servers think I'm being some kind of degenerate as they give me dirty looks. She tells me and I quote, " Don't be rude to my staff, or I will block you from receiving orders. I'm understaffed" Just so u know hunny, I saw plenty of people that could have approached me and told me you will be with me in a few minutes. So don't clap off with blanks. You don't even know what actually happened and you just assume I was being rude when clearly the server I said "please" and "thank you" to has receptive hearing, you are barking up the wrong tree. No need, I can very easily do without your insignificant $5 orders while waiting patiently to be insulted, I won't be coming back for any order or any service. So not only was it frustrating to stand there and wait for 10 minutes, I was called rude for asking for assistance. This is the second time they have acted this way when I complained about having to wait for a significant amount of time before being acknowledged, I will not be going back to an establishment run by from what I can tell, in my personal opinion, hooligans and ex cons. read more

Pro tip: if you try to have breakfast here on Mother's day and there's a huge wait, sit at the counter. No wait and service is super fast and friendly. Love this diner as do many of the locals and students. No hard to understand why. Their food is amazing and service is quick. I got their short stack of sweet potato pancakes, which is just as light and fluffy as the traditional version, but less sweet. I only wish they had hash browns. We waited around 25 minutes for our food, and decided that this was taking WAY too long. The restaurant wasn't even crowded too! We needed to get somewhere, so we left without ever receiving our food. And while we were waiting for TWENTY FIVE MINUTES for a plate of disco fries, only twice did someone come to our table, and it was to give us water and ask if that is all we are waiting on, we never even received utensils. Studying and working locally I find myself eating here more often than I'd like to admit. Great for night shifts as they're open 24/7. Unfortunately, every time I finish the meal thinking "mehhhh. I should of cooked myself". It's standard diner food to me, and in my opinion kind of pricey for what you get. I've tried a few fried apps, buff chick wrap, the vegetarian quesadilla, some breakfast items, and the Mac and cheese. Also have had milkshakes and various baked goods/desserts from the cases.
