Hubby and I decided that we would splurge for a fancy date night at the Red Feather. There are some really wonderful things going on here, but other things were really bad for us, which left us very disappointed overall. First, the great things...the atmosphere is lovely, cozy, with an upscale feel. We enjoyed the open kitchen, the visible flame and smoky smell of the wood-burning oven. The service was very good and staff was warm and welcoming. Our server told us she was new. We could tell she was a bit nervous, but she did a great job taking care of us. Now for the good food...We each enjoyed 2 slices of complementary bread with butter. Thank goodness for that bread, otherwise we would have left very hungry! The portion sizes are extremely small with big price tags. We split the beet salad, so we each had a teeny tiny salad. Even if it had not been split, it still would still have been very tiny. Maybe a half a beet total, over a smear of yogurt, 4 nuts, and about half cup of greens. It was tasty, though, and, being so small, it disappeared quickly. We ordered the gnocchi as an appetizer. It was listed under "plates to share," but that must have been a joke. It was barely a taste for 1 person. We were brought a huge plate with a small center indention that held 6 small gnocchi, a couple of mushroom slices, and a dab of sauce. It was a lovely dish and very tasty, but, like the salad, definitely much too small of a portion for the price. Now for the really disappointing food....our entrees. I ordered the burger. I asked that it be "cooked through," no red interior, but not necessarily "well done." Well, the burger I received was definitely way overcooked over much too hot of a fire. The exterior was black, crispy-charred and the interior was super dry, making it very hard to chew and swallow. I do realize that juiciness is reduced when meat is cooked through, but this was ridiculous. It was like a hockey puck. The bacon on the burger was good-tasting and thick sliced, but so hard, it was like beef jerky and had to be eaten separately. No way could it be bitten through while part of the sandwich. The bun had been toasted, but was really dry and crumbly as well, and it fell apart the moment I tried to pick up the burger. Of course, then the soft cheese and sticky onion marmalade started escaping and the whole thing fell completely apart. I had to try to eat my burger with a knife and fork. I managed to get half of it down, but I definitely didn't enjoy it. I opted for vegetable over fries, which was actually pretty good compared to the burger, but nothing special, just standard plain pan sautéed broccoli rabe. The biggest disappointment was my husband's lamb. This was an off-menu item mentioned by our waitress. We did not ask the price (our bad), but it turned out to be $57!. Oh well, we love lamb and figured it would be a lovely treat, maybe something really extraordinary. It looked good on the plate, but when he cut into it, it turned out that more than half of the slab was inedible soft white fat. He was able to extract maybe 3 ounces of edible lamb meat from between the bones, which was streaked with more fat and gristle. He had to saw through sinew-like strings of connective tissue to get that much. I gave him half of my burnt burger and we traded so he would have something to eat and I would try my hand at getting what I could off the lamb. Despite using a serrated steak knife, I could not get any more than 2 more bites of meat off of it either and I gave up. It was nearly all fat, bone, and connective tissue. Definitely not tender at all either. So...by the end of the meal, hubby and I each had only tap water to drink, 2 slices of bread with butter, maybe 4 small bites of salad, 3 gnocchi, and a poorly prepared expensive entree. No dessert. Our bill was over $100. We really wanted to like this place. Darn. What a disappointment. read more

I came here for brunch on a Sunday, around 12:30 with my wife and a friend, and left very satisfied. Our friend had suggested it, as we had fallen into a rut with our brunch places and this was a great breath of fresh air. Red Feather Kitchen is an awesome farm to table option in Oakley. Food: We started with the biscuit and preserve sampler. The biscuits are amazing, so flakey, buttery and fresh. The preserves/spreads included apple butter, grape? and a rhubarb--I couldn't get enough of the apple butter. For my entree, I had the eggs Baltimore, which came with two crab heavy crabcakes, poached eggs and hollandaise, and a side of home style potatoes. Generous portion, and the crabcakes were definitely crab heavy. My wife ordered the breakfast poutine, which was an egg over breakfast potatoes, short rib gravy and delicious melted cheese. Service: We were seated as we arrived at our reservation time. We had water as soon as we sat down. Our server gave us ample time to look at the menu before ordering, and answered questions patiently. We didn't feel rushed at anytime, and the server was never far away. Facilities: Red Feather Kitchen is in Oakley, so expect street parking. There's some side streets near by, so you have that. While in Cincinnati for my brothers birthday my girlfriend and I decided to meet friends at Red Feather for brunch. I had heard rave reviews and definitely wanted to check out Red Feather. Getting a reservation was easy as they are on Open Table and some of the table times were open. We arrived and were seated and our server came over and welcomed us and gave us a few minutes to decide on drinks, I ordered a spicy Bloody Mary. The glass is brought out with ice and vodka and there is a build your own bloody bar with all the fixings. Our table order the biscuits based on the recommendation from our server and they were brought out with butter and jam. The biscuits were a hit and were very good. Next the kitchen sent out a basket of beignets, I didn't try these since I don't eat doughnuts. The table said they were very good. For my meal I ordered the eggs Baltimore which is crab cakes with poached eggs and tasso hollandaise it was very good and the eggs were poached perfectly. Everyone else also enjoyed the meal. Finding parking even on a Sunday was kind of tough but luckily a spot opened up while we were circling the block. We will be back for dinner read more

New pasta sizes are a joke. $16 for 3oz. Decent meal there last night, but that annoyed me.

My wife booked a reservation for my birthday and it was a week night. We got right in and were greeted promptly. It was like a finely organized orchestra of dancing waiters without the dancing. Everyone had a place. At these prices the food should be good and it was. I got the steak and potatoes with the scallop pork belly appetizer and it was mouth watering. I spent a little extra time eating and felt like I had to be on my best behavior. This place is perfect date night but I felt a little uncomfortable with their clientele. Almost every couple around us was a much older man with a much younger woman. It made me feel very uncomfortable considering I was there with my wife. I may go back and try the brunch and hopefully it will seem less creepy. They have $7 valet but there is plenty of street parking. We rounded out our bachelorette destination party in Cincinnati with a wonderful brunch here. We called ahead for reservations and were seated in a nearly private back sunroom. It was lovely and provided the perfect secluded spot to wind down our festivities. The menu was everything you could hope for. Because I can never choose between sweet or savory for brunch, I ordered both the mushroom omelette, which came with a side of perfectly crispy hashbrowns, and buttermilk pancakes, which I split with a friend. That might have been a normal brunch portion, but I was lured by the description of the buttermilk biscuits and three different types of preserves, so those had to be added to the order. The staff was wonderfully accommodating to our large party and also treated us to heaps of beignets, which were to die for. I am from Chicago and I joined a group of friends here at Red Feather Kitchen for dinner on a Saturday night. I was impressed with the beautiful interior and we were seated at a nice table by the window. Service was attentive...and our waiter was kind enough to split our bill into separate checks...even separating shared appetizers...a very welcome gesture for our group. There are wonderful choices on the varied menu. To share, we ordered the lobster chorizo aranchini and the mussels with fries...all delicious, but I would have loved to have seen a few more mussels in the order. I had the silky butternut squash soup. And for an entree I ordered the expertly prepared crispy skin salmon. The only place where RFK falls a bit short is with their cocktails. Both my friend and I ordered a martini and gimlet and we both remarked how the cocktail was almost warm. We ordered another round, asking for the drinks to be extra cold, and they still came out warm. Not a big deal, but with such an inventive, delightful menu, I would expect their cocktail service to be just as good. No other complaints, the RFK is really top-notch and a delightful place to have a meal. I will return when I am back in Cincinnati. read more

Had the old fashion cocktail (very smooth) and a glass of wine (tasty, reasonable selection) we shared the whipped ricotta (amazing starter, good portion for 3), the pork belly steamed buns (3 buns, flavorful, juicy, soft yet crunchy- a must get on the menu), the shishito peppers (large portion that highlighted the flavor of the peppers), the scallops (scallops cooked perfectly) and the burger (a solid burger I would go back for). Nice farm to table restaurant with a seasonal menu. Our table of eight was able to try a bunch of stuff on the menu, including the outlaw cowboy steak, yum! It takes an hour to prepare, but it was so good and worth the wait. We also had: the cheese board, olives, beet salad, pork belly sliders, and the brussel sprouts. Everything was delicious, but the portions are a little on the small side for the price. My family and I came to Red Feather Kitchen for my moms birthday about a week ago. I live down the street but never had been here before, and wow was I missing out or what! Red feather is a "scratch kitchen" meaning everything is made from scratch and made to order, which I liked. The ambiance was amazing, when you first walk in it smells almost as if there was a wood burning fire. The lighting in the restaurant was dim, which made for a romantic feel, and the booth that we sat at, you could see the kitchen to the right, and almost see them making the food. It was very great service ever since we walked in the door. They make you feel as if you were in the fanciest restaurant in Cincinnati. Very attentive servers and I loved that after each course, someone would come around to clean the crumbs off of the table. On to the food... We shared an order of the honey and truffle ricotta as an appetizer, which we couldn't get enough of. I also got the beet salad which was also very delicious. As for my entrée, I got two of the small plates, the pork belly steamed buns which were very good, not too fatty or heavy and of course the truffle gnocchi which I order at every restaurant when they have it! I was very impressed with my choices, the gnocchi was very good and not as heavy of a cream sauce as others that ive had at similar restaurants. I also tried the special, which was a monkfish over some kind of risotto (butternut I believe) - and that was delicious. My mom ordered the scallops, and those may have been my favorite! They were seared to a perfection and the sautéed veggies surrounding it were so good! We of course got a free dessert and ordered another one. Very nice restaurant, I took my family here for my sons birthday, I had the prosciutto salad and Foie gras , every one else had the pork belly with steamed buns, Scallops and crispy salmon, all of which were top notch. The atmosphere and service were very nice as well, my only negative comment would be, the lack of ventilation for the wood fire cooking, after you leave, you smell like you were at a campfire, but it will not stop me from returning. Hats off to the chef I must update my previous review, eleven of us went to Red Feather a couple days before Christmas and I must say they were on point. Our server John T. was great! The restaurant offers high class dishes and drink selections in a small bistro like environment. There is a very intimate general dining area, so be ready to be sitting close to other parties. Unfortunately our seat was next to the kitchen and there was a very bright spotlight above the stove vent that was shining very brightly. I would avoid sitting in this area is possible. Additionally, due to no space, the wine and cooler for the table next to us was placed right next to us. We were consistently dripped on throughout the night whenever they were serving the other table. Lastly, there is some training issue with serving out water as the waiters hold the pitcher above your head and dishes during serving and several times the water was dripping on us. Outside of the service and seat location, the food at the restaurant was quite good. Oysters on the half shell were above average. The pork chop was very well done and the stripped bass was very very good. Would highly recommend the bass for individuals who enjoy seafood. Lastly we got the apple crumple for dessert. That was quite good. Overall, giving 3 stars because of the seating and service that night, but food was very good. Will be back to give it another try. read more

Last night we sat at the bar and service was great. But I made the mistake of ordering the beef short rib and was disappointed to say the least. The "short rib" dish I received is not the short rib advertised on their web site. And the portion as advertised is not what you get. Instead of the short rib surrounded in spring vegetables succotash, patatas bravas, romesco this dish was covered in pineapple. And what looked like refried beans topped off with popcorn. Yes popcorn. Which I saved for the movie after our dinner. The price is still as advertised $51. This entree is a complete rip off. Had I known the amount of short rib was the size of a meatball I would have sent it back but like I said it was covered in pineapple. Two stars for great service and the mussels were fantastic. After being introduced to the absolute wonder known as the Outlaw Cowboy, Red Feather has now become my favorite restaurant in Cincinnati. I visit every other month for this steak. My boyfriend and I like to sit at the bar--it's more relaxed yet the service remains top notch. It takes about 45 minutes to prepare the steak, so an appetizer is recommended. You don't want to go too crazy with appetizers since the main course is so rich and filling. The potato gnocchi is just the right size and packs so much deep flavor. Now the real star is the Outlaw Cowboy. The steak is always cooked perfectly to a medium rare. It is a large cut, meant to be shared between 2 people. Don't worry. They carve the steak into manageable pieces for you so that it isn't awkward to eat. The steak is garnished with a flavored butter that just adds to the juiciness. And the potatoes. You cannot neglect the potatoes. This meal is definitely not for the faint of heart, but it is well worth every indulgent morsel. read more

Went with my fiancé. I ordered the chicken and polenta which was tasty but a bit too salty. She ordered the scallops which she liked. The prices are a bit high, $39 for some chicken, polenta and asparagus...in Cincinnati? Maybe in NY this price would make sense. My biggest complaint is we sat by the kitchen and at one point it got incredibly smoky! I ended up getting a smoke headache and my fiancé has asthma so it was really bad for her. She's been coughing for a couple days since we went and has needed her inhaler much more frequently. Overall, I don't think we will be returning any time soon. read more

The whipped ricotta was amazing, the truffle and honey really intensified the flavor. Probably one of my favorite items on the menu for the night. The cheese plate was good. I enjoyed 2 of the three cheeses and the accoutrements were nice as well. I got the crispy skin salmon as my entree. It was good but a little disappointing. For a very small piece of fish sitting on spinach and mushrooms I felt it was over priced. $27 for a small portion was a little much. I suppose that's fine dining. However I have had swordfish at a few fine dining restaurants that were the same price or less and even more fish, so that was disappointing. We had a hard time deciding on dessert. So between the 3 of us we went with 5 desserts. They were all good. However afterwards we decided if we come back just go for the cheese and dessert. The hostess was our entertainment tonight. She seemed to be annoyed with everyone in the room. A couple walked in and asked to sit at a different table and she had a fit and explained that would mess up their reservations. Moving from a 2 top to another 2 top really messes things up apparently. Another table was wobbly and the guests asked her for help and she threw another fit. Lots of eye rolling and negative energy coming off of her. I get it you can have a rough day but being the front of the house where you deal with patrons and giving a first impression of negativity isn't cool. read more

Food is decent (7/10), but overpriced. However, the service and culture here is just very strange and unprofessional. My wife and I had a bizarre incident the other night here with another couple. Apparently they were short-staffed and short on menus, and the manager was pressuring the server to recover them. We didn't know this until later. But instead of telling us they didn't have enough menus, the server started rushing us into ordering our food, in a very awkward effort to recover the menus. It came off as very inconsiderate of us as customers and amateur. We bought a $40 charcuterie board and she brought it out and about only 20 minutes into our reservation, she told us "now let's be conscientious of the time." I couldn't believe it. She had a tone of lecturing us and we weren't even there for very long. I don't know in what world she thinks that behavior is acceptable. And it was totally out of proportion to how long we had been there. Very strange. To make things worse, she came back like 5-10 minutes later and again without giving us any context about the menus at all, she told us our time was up and asked to take 3 of our menus. We were all shocked by her behavior. Completely uncalled for. My wife and I dine out a lot. We are efficient people and this honestly was no longer than a group would normally take to order food. At this point, it was so disconcerting and awkward. The manager came over and explained the situation with the menus, but the situation was beyond repair that we decided to leave. To top off this bizarre experience, some woman sitting next to us had overheard bits and pieces of the incident and somehow got under the impression that we were being the rude ones for standing up to the poor service. She was so unhinged. She started ranting at us violently about how hard it is to be a server at an independent restaurant. It was very scary. She clearly works or worked at a restaurant in the past and had some trauma or a chip on her shoulder about something. She even followed us out of the restaurant. It was one of the top most bizarre things I've gone through and just overall very unprofessionally managed from all angles. For a restaurant that we heard has a good reputation, I left feeling kind of embarrassed for them. Some more formal training in customer management would go a long way for their staff. read more

Holiday grocery shopping led to a couple of hungry gals. Yelped to see what's close, and Red Feather popped up. It was in one word FANTASTIC. We didn't have a reservation so we promptly grabbed two seats at the bar. Behind us sat a Bloody Mary bar which was tempting but I stuck with coffee. We studied the menu and settled on a few different items. I ordered the Lobster and mushroom Benedict with truffle hollandaise sauce and my friend ordered the omelet filled with guetta and cheese. Both served with potatoes. We ordered a pancake for good measure. While we anxiously waited we were brought 4 complimentary beniets. Absolutely delicious. The menu was full of choices and I hope to return to try something new, but to be honest I will probably order the exact thing again. Soooooo Good. read more

Finally!! A scratch kitchen/farm to table style restaurant that does it exactly right. Went here last week and was more than pleased with almost everything I tried. This place cooks everything in house every day, and the freshness shines in the food. The menu had plenty of options, and the drinks were tasty as well. We had the whipped ricotta (my least favorite of everything, but still yummy), the Brussels sprouts (SO CRISPY SO GOOD), the scallops, and the pork chop. There are a lot of great restaurants in this city but Red Feather is our hands down favorite. Yes, the food is incredible but the staff truly sets them apart and that wine list...They are friendly, knowledgeable and the perfect amount of attentive. Wine recommendations from John are always on point. I don't even pick anymore...just let him do it! Our favorite plates include the short rib, charcuterie board, mussels and the whipped ricotta. Yum! We just hosted 14 family and friends here to celebrate our wedding and the staff went over and above to make it a special evening. They worked closely with us to select some small plates and wine to have ready upon our arrival. Dinner for 16 for a scratch kitchen can be challenging but it was served perfectly. I pass this place all the time, heard good things from my friend about it, and finally made the reservation. Service was great, our server was attentive, knowledgeable about the whole menu, and able to make recommendations A majority of our food was great and they walk you through how the menu works. We ordered a few small plates for the table, such as the fried chicken skins (great starting dish-crisp sweet and hot skin served with ranch) and the whipped ricotta (this was fantastic!). The asparagus soup was also delicious, wasn't able to try this since my dad devoured the whole thing! My mom got the beet salad, and even though she isn't a fan of beets, she really enjoyed it. The lobster and chorizo aranchini (~fried rice/risotto ball) was okay, it may be that the flavors don't mix well in my opinion. I would recommend the shrimp and grits, it's a small plate but easily can be an entree. My favorite part of every meal, and especially for this meal, is the dessert! I cannot remember the name, but it was some sort of strawberry lemon sorbet with pistachio crust and meringue (there is a picture). This place can get pricey, so keep that in mind. Not the case here. Have not been disappointed in any dish (except maybe the pecan pie). While the food is great the service truly sets this place heads above anything else.
