Always busy, it is a fun place to enjoy people watching too. Menu is small but even as a vegetarian, there are choices and the kitchen accomodates special requests. Seared tuna salad was delish, so tender and flavorful- portion was good to share as appetizers - little bit small for an entree if you are hungry. I asked for some Wasabi and that was the perfect addition. The roast chicken salad was also enjoyed. Same theory on the portion size. I recently went to R+D for a girls night dinner and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere and ambiance is super cute and all of their food looks delicious. They have huge portions and I was more than full (in fact my girlfriends went to sprinkles ice cream after and I couldn't get anything because I was too full. Very sad...). I got the carnitas sandwich, delightful. My girlfriends got the rib special (divine) and some salad with goat cheese. The goat cheese was so good, she asked the waiter to get the name of the cheese (chevre). So the food quality and service were above par! The only star deduction is for their inaccurate estimate of wait time (45 min? More like 1.5 hours...) and lack of cocktail menu. They only have a beer menu but tell you they can make any cocktail you want. So I asked for their specialty, which turned out to be a $14 pomegranate martini! I feel the drink was kind of pricey and since they don't have a cocktail menu, they can just charge whatever. Boo! read more

Decided to try this restaurant out for date night last night. What a great place! The atmosphere is perfect, not too many people but plenty to know the place is good. Our server, Carlos, was very knowledgeable and quick! Which was a good thing because we got the last spicy tuna roll. They do have limited availability on some of their items but everything is tasty. We ordered the chicken meatballs and the wild mushroom meatloaf for our entrees. Both had so much favor and were perfectly cooked! The only thing that I wasn't impressed with was that they do not have a cocktail menu, but they do have a full service bar that can make you a cocktail. It's a very cute place, decor wise. Location is kinda tricky as the restaurant sits in a corner of a large plaza. Lady and I went here for a date night. 1. Appetizers. We end up getting the deviled eggs since it's a popular choice and very light. Presentation was not the best in my opinion but flavor was good! They put some relish in there and I thought it was amazing. 2. I end up getting the chicken while the lady got the filet (8oz). The chicken comes with a rice called tabouleh. It was new to me. It was alright. And also came with some big tomatoes and olives? Not sure. Hopefully the photo will help! The filet mignon came with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Mash potatoes were delicious! Excellent salads, the fish dishes here are also very good. I'm disappointed they serve farmed salmon here, for the price I would prefer healthier Alaskan or Pacific salmon. They also had great sushi. We liked the atmosphere, it was definitely very busy. Hillstone is one of favorite restaurants and since R+D has the same owner, I thought I'd try it out. The decor and services was excellent and we all enjoyed our meals. The menu is limited but the dishes they do serve are well prepared. Overall, it was a nice evening out. I didn't experience enough of the menu to give a star rating on the food. This five stars is for the diversity I saw amongst the staff. The kitchen and restaurant staff were diverse in ethnicity and gender. I don't know that I've seen that in many Dallas restaurants (amongst the entire operation). Certainly don't recall that in any of their sister restaurants (Hillstone, Neighborhood Services & Montlake Cut). So this review is 5 stars for diversity. Popular dinner place in Highland Park area. Good food and attentive staff. Wine list was good and very reasonable - many wine bottles only $10-$20 over retail prices. The deviled eggs are spectacular and the sushi is fresh. I had the pan fried sole which came with mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked broccoli. Best was probably the meatloaf or chicken sandwich, worst was the carrot cake and the french fries. Others were ok. We waited about 15 mins to be seated for our reservation at 6:30 on a Thursday. Very loud, my ears are ringing as we head home. Pretty good service, had to ask for a few things like ketchup for the fries, a Togo box, and a forgotten Diet Coke. The place is a little pretentious, their website has rules, such as we don't like big parties, you have to dress nice and if you sit longer than 90 mins we can move you to the bar. Seems like how quickly can I get you in and out and how much can I charge without you throwing a fit. When my husband asked about any happy hour drinks (we often like to get a restaurant specialty drink) the waiter laughed and said ice tea or water. He opted for the full priced Crown and I took him up on the water. He was good natured about it, but the message was clear. I don't think we will go back. Definitely preferred the Spicy Tuna over the two -- the Rainbow roll had a fresh-made crabmeat mix, which tasted a bit like coleslaw to me (maybe too much mayo)? Tried to go here for for a couple drinks and bite to eat after work. The bar was full but restaurant was pretty empty. Waited by the door for about 5 minutes with 2 other parties with no greeting. The manager was 5 feet away and didn't acknowledge anyone. This is the type of manager that should be at a Chili's. The hostess eventually got around to seating. We had 2 of the 4 at the restaurant (all meeting after work). After that wait she said she would wait until the others arrived to seat us. I find it quite funny at the lack of common sense. The restaurant tables were empty, and it's 5:15, not rush hour. If this is the type of establishment you like to spend money at, go for it. If not, head to another spot in the area. read more

We wish they still put guest satisfaction at the forefront here. But it seems dish integrity has taken center stage. We asked them last week to slice the large pressed sashimi into eight pieces instead of four. It's a simple request, and one we've made for years. They've always been accommodating and have always done it for us, as well as the dozens of other patrons who make the same simple request. Well, the new GM has different ideas about putting guest requests first and they refused to do it this time, and said they wouldn't do it again in the future. They explained that dish integrity was of paramount importance, apparently coming BEFORE guest satisfaction. We'd understand if it was an odd request or in some way had changed the dish considerably. But it didn't. Adding an extra cut to that dish was a simple request and one they always used to accommodate. And the fact that they steadfastly refused to do it says all we need to know about the management at R+D; customers aren't as important as they used to be..... I was in the mood for sushi and thought it would be nice to try a place I'd never been before, so I did a search and read about how great the sushi was at R+D Kitchen. At first, I thought it was a joke until I actually saw their menu with so many sushi roll options. I never expected an American restaurant to have great sushi, so I had to check it out for myself. Luckily, they take reservations, so when we showed up for our party of 2 on a Friday night, we were seated after only a few minutes of waiting. The dimly lit restaurant had a cool vibe to it and was perfect for a date night. The scene was gorgeous. As soon as we were seated, our waiter came asking if he could take our drink orders. Of course I wanted to order a drink, but I needed at least 1 minute to pick the menu up to see what they were offering. I'm not sure why the waiter didn't just start us off with a welcome and some waters to give us time to look at the menu. We ended up ordering a bottle of wine and started with the Seared Tuna Roll. Of all of the sushi rolls I've had in Dallas, this one was the best! The lightly seared tuna had so much flavor and went well with the avocado and other veggies. Even the sesame oil that was drizzled on top took the taste of the roll up a notch. I highly recommend it! Next up, we ordered two Rainbow Rolls and one Osaka Style Tuna Roll. The rolls were all sensational! I can't say one bad thing about any of the rolls we ate, but I can say they were good and fresh! We ended the night sharing an order of the French Fries and they were pretty darn good. It was the perfect crisp and saltiness to give us a little difference from all of the sushi we had eaten. The food alone would have given this review 5 stars, but it was the waiter that knocked a star off. He wasn't friendly and he was anything but welcoming to us. Also, I am not sure why the hostess made us wait a few minutes before having us seated. Not only did we have a reservation, but there were many empty tables in there to not have us wait. We set by a booth close to the bar and we were very impressed with the added attention to detail from the staff and how well they work together as a team we were helped by almost every single person in that restaurant, making sure that our plates were cleared at the right time that our drinks were at the table and when we had our first try of our food someone came to check on us and the food was just amazing. It was every bit as good as we remembered, food wise and service wise. We had the dip duo for appetizer which is still as good as it ever was. Entrees were the Rubenesque with fries and the Greek style chicken. Both were fabulous. Sandwich was better than expected and the fries were so hot and fresh. The Greek style chicken was so tender (even the breast) and the tabouleh that accompanied was fresh and flavorful. For dessert (we usually skip but to celebrate 29 years figured we should indulge) we shared the banana cream pie. OMG so freaking good, we wanted to lick the plate. We refrained. The policies they are implying do not make sense and it needs to be updated. Food was great! Catherine, the manager was not helpful at all. She did not care about our situation nor to help it. It was more of a I'm going to throw the policies at you and not worry about compassion at all. Honestly, the host person was alot more helpful and caring than Catherine was. She should take over her position for sure. I was given an attire standard note, which the rules on there contradict itself. Love this place, but no so much the environment some of the staff provides. Especially when it comes to management. I eat here constantly and it is always a hit or miss with the staff. They want to act like they are fine dining, but it is far from that. Dining should not be this difficult with so many rules. Especially rules that nowadays don't matter unless you're eating at a Michelin Star restaurant, which this is by far not even close even though they seem to think they might be something close to it. read more

I feel like a main part in a wonderful dining experience is great service. To start with we got the dip duo to all share and then I got the Mediterranean seared ahi tuna salad. My friends also got the Reuben sandwich, rainbow roll, and the Asian sesame salad. I would recommend the Reuben sandwich - it was the best by far! My only complaints is that the place was very loud and their soy sauce is very weird, it has a sour taste which did not pair well with the sushi roll. I ate lunch today and was VERY disappointed. I have a Hotel/Restaurant Management degree, 20 years in the industry, Mansion on Turtle Creek, Rosewood Crescent Court, and Disney World as former employers. I am very familiar with good customer service and making people feel comfortable and valued. Today was 100 % the opposite. I asked for a simple Mediterranean Tuna Salad and they informed me they didn't have Tuna because of Covid... We ordered Tuna Sushi roll for appetizers so I know they had some form of tuna. Nonetheless, the server(s) were rude when I tried to ask for the salad with another protein. They informed me that "corporate" would not allow them to serve this and there was no way I could get it at all. I noticed a lady at the table next to me complaining to a manager about this very same issue. Bottom line is they disregarded my request and made me feel uncomfortable. My lunch was $80 and I will NEVER go back. In these times, you would think restaurants would attempt to honor a request or at least try to make the customer feel valued. So disappointed. read more

My partner and I would like to eat at R+D Kitchen because the menu is simple and the food is delicious. The reason I rate them as three is the staff. First is the hostess. I'm thinking I'm not the only person getting irate when they ask "What can I do for you?". I'm coming to a restaurant and I believe it's obvious why me and my family is there. No service person should ask that question unless their service is vague, which, in this case, is not. Second is the waiter staff. Please do not ask how the food is when my mouth is full with it. But the worse thing is they are pushy in taking your order, getting your plate away and giving your check. I really hope that staff will put more effort in creating a better atmosphere. read more

This is the most ridiculous place!!!! I called to make a reservation for 6 people. They will not make a reservation over 5 people! You are allowed to come in and try and get a table but it's first come first serve. So very disappointing! So If you want to wait for over an hr or more with a bday party or anything else , sorry we can't accommodate you. Only up To 5! So stupid! What a waste, oh well, onto the next place! Stopped by this place on a visit to Dallas. It's nicely decorated and laid out. I immediately noticed that the staff was very hospitable once we walked in. Was greeted by everyone. We sat outside as the weather permitted. The patio was really nice -a good mix of private while also allowing for parking lot watching. I ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio to start. They actually brought out the wrong wine, which I didn't know until they brought out another glass to let me know they brought out the wrong wine lol. I wasn't mad at it because they let me have both glasses lol #winning I ordered the trout special which was so delicious btw. It was a huge piece of Rainbow trout, seasoned perfectly and just slid off the skin. The spinach was really delicious with the Parmesan. I didn't really care for the mashed potatoes that came with it. They were a little bland as far as taste goes. I also noticed they didn't have very many starters. They offered sushi rolls and sides, but no actual starters. However, the food came out really fast. Like maybe 10 minutes at the most? I wasn't mad about that.
