I've been to R+D twice in the last month and I'm salivating thinking about the next visit. The first time, I had their meatloaf, which will make your toes curl it's so delicious. I ate it like it was my job. This most recent time, I got their roasted chicken salad and their duo dip (starter). Both were exceptional. The chicken is cooked to absolutely perfection and the vinaigrette they dress it in is sensational . I especially loved the pimento cheese in the duo dip ... it ... was ... fabulous! read more

The food, service, and ambience were all fantastic. The services provided by the professional management and staff are the main reasons that we keep coming back. Skye and Courtney are exceptional. The old world elegance is a rare thing, and we value their focus to make sure that everything about the dining experience is excellent. I highly recomend this restaurant. read more

Pre-Covid we went to RD 2-3 times per week and absolutely loved it. The manager, staff, and food were great/consistent. Since Covid we have been 4-5 times and every single time we've had to sent food back or listen to the ridiculous new rules they have in the restaurant. Tonight we tried again and it was for sure the last time ever. It was terrible and they really just don't care. On top of the awful food, they've now taken all the 4 top tables and made them "2 people only" tables. WTF?! Such a Hillstone corporate move. read more

No, I definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere is mediocre. The service & staff wasn't attentive to me and my business partner. The food wasn't hot or flavorful. read more

R+D is solid. Really great food, really great service. Dinging the review one star cuz it can be pretentious at times, a bit clique'ish, and it's kinda pricey. I dropped $130 for lunch with my girlfriend the last time. And yeah.. it was very good. read more

How did I not know about this place sooner? It's hard to obtain 5-stars but this place is absolutely amazing. The atmosphere inside was great, not to mention it was packed! We sat at the bar and watched the open kitchen prepare all the dishes. Oooo what a bad place to sit, because you literally want to order everything you see! We started with deviled eggs, Osaka spicy tuna (AMAZING), nigiri plate, and coconut shrimp roll (so good that we forgot to take a picture of it). Main courses include grilled salmon (cooked to perfection), the carnitas sandwich (wow delicious), and mushroom meatloaf (delicious). The sides with the main dishes were also top notch. We added a side of fries, cashew kale salad and pine room salad. It was definitely a lot of food! We had to take stuff to-go no doubt, especially since you have to save room room for dessert. We ordered the banana cream pie and hot fudge Sunday. The banana cream pie is the lighter dessert. The hot fudge Sunday was surprisingly our favorite. They make their own hot fudge...so good you could drink it. Our waitress was very attentive. The service was great. The presentation and attention to detail on everything was so refreshing. It's been awhile that I've given 5stars, but this place earned it. Can't wait to go back! read more

R+D Kitchen lies right across a personal favorite of mine - Hillstone. These upscale restaurants are not only in the same relaxing, homey environment, but they also share the same nice and expansive parking lot. So you and your homies can come whenever and valet won't be necessary here. But now onto the food! I have only been here for lunch, but the food of R+D Kitchen is described as a New American style restaurant in addition to having some nice sushi dishes. Of all the sushi R+D has, there are two sushi dishes that are a homerun for me - the Nigiri Plate and Coconut Shrimp Roll. The Nigiri Plate is detailed as 'pristine fillets of salmon, tuna and hiramasa on seasoned rice,' and I can say that they are some tasty pieces and nicely sized. The best way to chronicle the Nigiri Plate is that it's just good sushi overall. Now the Coconut Shrimp Roll dish is something else because it's a unique, yet simple item. The shrimp, coconut flakes and avocado are not ingredients that you would think to all be in a sushi roll. But they amalgamate to synthesize deliciousness. My family will always ask me to bring a couple rolls of Coconut Sushi home when I dine at R+D, so it's an awesome dish to try out. For the rest of the menu, my go-to is the Pan Fried Petrale Sole. I recommend squeezing the juice of a lemon onto it after you spread some tartar sauce - the contrast from the two flavors with the fish just elevates the taste of the dish. On top of that, the fish is crispy and appetizingly fried, but it is also pleasantly light. So if you were still hungry, you could try the Roasted Salmon or the USDA Prime Center-Cut Filet; both are excellent dish on their own as well. But if you aren't too hungry after the Fried Sole, you can still try their sides! I enjoy their Deviled Eggs, but their French Fries are underrated and don't get enough attention. They have a great combination of salt, size of the fries and the number of fries to be a nice addition to your entree or appetizer. I definitely think everyone should give this a try, so come on by if you catch yourself in the neighborhood! read more

Never thought I would leave a sushi review for a restaurant that is part of the Hillstone restaurant group but alas here we are. Both the food and service were exceptional (which is not unusual) at R&D but the surprise was the phenomenal sushi. Try the shrimp and macadamia roll. You will not be disappointed! Will definitely be going back again soon! read more

This place is excellent. The staff are professional and the atmosphere is comfortable, classy, and welcoming. The chicken sandwich is incredible. (It's my favorite menu item.) The sushi is pretty good, I have had better but for the price it's fair and filling. This is my favorite restaurant in this area, I would take my friends here. read more

My favorite restaurant in Dallas! Great ambience, consistent, friendly, attentive and professional staff and the food - incredible. They also are taking Covid-19 guidelines seriously which is very much appreciated and will not jeopardize safety of patrons. Honestly, I used to find some their 'rules' nonsense and now grateful for the elevated level of game they bring for their customers. Thank you! See you at the bar! read more

One of my favorite dinner places to go! Outside of R+D, there is a koi pond. When I go I ALWAYS get the pressed sushi. The best!!! Could eat it everyday! The service could be way better and you barely can get a reservation there. I still recommend to go to R+D Kitchen if you are looking for good food. read more

One of my favorite places to go in Dallas. Great staff and food/beverage. Hope to return soon.

First, the service was spot on. Very attentive. We were here for lunch today. Second or first, the food was AMAZING. Couldn't have asked for a better lunch. We started with the chips, guacamole and dip. It was good. The chips were nicely salted not to much just the right amount and fresh. I had the salmon. It was cooked perfectly. Others had the burger and fries and the Ruben. Don't let the size fool you. The sandwiches are huge. read more

Decided to try this restaurant out for date night last night. What a great place! The atmosphere is perfect, not too many people but plenty to know the place is good. Our server, Carlos, was very knowledgeable and quick! Which was a good thing because we got the last spicy tuna roll. They do have limited availability on some of their items but everything is tasty. We ordered the chicken meatballs and the wild mushroom meatloaf for our entrees. Both had so much favor and were perfectly cooked! The only thing that I wasn't impressed with was that they do not have a cocktail menu, but they do have a full service bar that can make you a cocktail. I was just hoping to try something different that they had on the menu. If it's date night, meeting a client or just need a place to eat, I think this restaurant will hit the spot. read more

It's a very cute place, decor wise. Location is kinda tricky as the restaurant sits in a corner of a large plaza. Lady and I went here for a date night. 1. Appetizers. We end up getting the deviled eggs since it's a popular choice and very light. Presentation was not the best in my opinion but flavor was good! They put some relish in there and I thought it was amazing. 2. I end up getting the chicken while the lady got the filet (8oz). The chicken comes with a rice called tabouleh. It was new to me. It was alright. And also came with some big tomatoes and olives? Not sure. Hopefully the photo will help! The filet mignon came with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Mash potatoes were delicious! And the broccoli was appetizing as well. 3. Overall, pretty good. We had a good time here. I will say, they do have a small entree menu but they do offer lots of great varieties (chicken, fish, beef, sushi, etc). read more

Excellent salads, the fish dishes here are also very good. I'm disappointed they serve farmed salmon here, for the price I would prefer healthier Alaskan or Pacific salmon. They also had great sushi. We liked the atmosphere, it was definitely very busy. Hillstone is one of favorite restaurants and since R+D has the same owner, I thought I'd try it out. The decor and services was excellent and we all enjoyed our meals. The menu is limited but the dishes they do serve are well prepared. Overall, it was a nice evening out. Dishes I recommend are the trout and fish dishes, california rolls and their tuna salad. read more

I didn't experience enough of the menu to give a star rating on the food. This five stars is for the diversity I saw amongst the staff. The kitchen and restaurant staff were diverse in ethnicity and gender. I don't know that I've seen that in many Dallas restaurants (amongst the entire operation). Certainly don't recall that in any of their sister restaurants (Hillstone, Neighborhood Services & Montlake Cut). So this review is 5 stars for diversity. That alone will have me back to spend my money. read more

Popular dinner place in Highland Park area. Good food and attentive staff. Wine list was good and very reasonable - many wine bottles only $10-$20 over retail prices. The deviled eggs are spectacular and the sushi is fresh. I had the pan fried sole which came with mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked broccoli. Only compliant is how we were rushed off after paying the bill. They actually came by and took our water glasses from us while we were still sitting and talking. No bigger rude hint needed that they wanted our table moved. We left a little upset after spending almost $200, but the food is good read more

R+D Kitchen - Delicious - New American Near Me - Dallas, Texas

Pretty decent food. Had a burger, chicken sandwich, deviled eggs, broccoli, sushi, meatloaf, carrot cake, banana cream pie and an expresso at our table. Best was probably the meatloaf or chicken sandwich, worst was the carrot cake and the french fries. Others were ok. We waited about 15 mins to be seated for our reservation at 6:30 on a Thursday. Very loud, my ears are ringing as we head home. Pretty good service, had to ask for a few things like ketchup for the fries, a Togo box, and a forgotten Diet Coke. The place is a little pretentious, their website has rules, such as we don't like big parties, you have to dress nice and if you sit longer than 90 mins we can move you to the bar. Seems like how quickly can I get you in and out and how much can I charge without you throwing a fit. When my husband asked about any happy hour drinks (we often like to get a restaurant specialty drink) the waiter laughed and said ice tea or water. He opted for the full priced Crown and I took him up on the water. He was good natured about it, but the message was clear. I don't think we will go back. But if we do I will order the chicken sandwich. read more

Started with some guacamole and queso. The guacamole was freshly mashed and heavy, the queso was quite unique, served room temp, but delightful with a pimento cheese texture. Next I had the rainbow roll which tasted as if it was from a full on Japanese sushi kitchen. For my main course I had the roasted chicken and broccoli. It was a large portion and perfectly cooked. The bartender that served us was also delightful. The only reason they lost a star is because they are a part of hillstone group, and well I'm not a big fan of hillstone to say the least. read more

The atmosphere in here is great and comfortable, but the host stand setup is a bit confusing (couldn't really find it or where to check in) and think we came in the wrong door? We got the Spicy Tuna 'Osaka Style' and the Rainbow roll. Definitely preferred the Spicy Tuna over the two -- the Rainbow roll had a fresh-made crabmeat mix, which tasted a bit like coleslaw to me (maybe too much mayo)? The rice had a pretty distinct vinegar taste but overall the sushi tasted really fresh and light. Not like other sushi I've had, but still enjoyable and would recommend the Spicy Tuna. Definitely will back and will give the sushi a second try! read more

Tried to go here for for a couple drinks and bite to eat after work. The bar was full but restaurant was pretty empty. Waited by the door for about 5 minutes with 2 other parties with no greeting. The manager was 5 feet away and didn't acknowledge anyone. This is the type of manager that should be at a Chili's. The hostess eventually got around to seating. We had 2 of the 4 at the restaurant (all meeting after work). After that wait she said she would wait until the others arrived to seat us. I find it quite funny at the lack of common sense. The restaurant tables were empty, and it's 5:15, not rush hour. If this is the type of establishment you like to spend money at, go for it. If not, head to another spot in the area. read more

We decided to try Cafe R+D for a girls' night out on a Friday night, after hearing rave reviews. Since we were starving, we wandered in right around 6 and were seated immediately. The restaurant slowly filled up, and by the time we left, around 7:30, it was packed with the hostess announcing 30-minute waits. The bar looked like a fun and casual place to catch up with a friend, although we were at a table. The whole place is gorgeous, very light and airy with a distinctly "California" feel. Of course, this restaurant group knows California, so that makes sense. I loved the atmosphere. I ordered the carnitas sandwich, which was one of those Houston's-style overflowing sandwiches. It was still manageable, though. Then again, when in California, I regularly ate 100x100s at In-N-Out. Nah, just kidding. OR AM I? Okay, I shouldn't write reviews late at night on little sleep. Sorry. Anyway, the carnitas sandwich was A-MA-ZING. The avocados were perfectly ripe, and the dipping sauce was dangerously addictive. The meat wouldn't exactly have passed for carnitas at any respectable Tex-Mex place, but for what it was, it was perfect. My friend had the roast beef sandwich, which comes dumped with cole slaw, piled between this awesome toasted bread with a crazy cheese fringe (I really can't explain...you just have to see it). Her sandwich was awesome, too, but way bigger than mine (something to keep in mind -- you could easily split that sandwich if you aren't too hungry). We also shared a side of fries, which was the typical yummy Houston's shoestring style. Love those skinny fries. Mmmm. Minus one star for being a little overpriced, but otherwise a great spot -- especially if you don't want to wait 2 hours at Houston's. Check it out!! read more

The Carnitas sandwich is mindblowingly good. Just re-dunk-u-lous. Its an enormous mountain of tender pulled pork over a bed of slaw, topped with fresh slices of avocado, a thick cheese of slice and an awesome bun (see picture). I dare you to try to eat it with your hands. I think its impossible, I felt goofy and awkward eating a sandwich with a knife and fork but that really is the best way to handle this monster. We ate at the bar in front of the kitchen and it was pretty entertaining watching the chefs prepare sushi. I havent tried anything else here yet but if this sandwich is any indication of the attention to detail and care put into all their dishes, R+D is welcome to have my money. read more

I was in the mood for sushi and thought it would be nice to try a place I'd never been before, so I did a search and read about how great the sushi was at R+D Kitchen. At first, I thought it was a joke until I actually saw their menu with so many sushi roll options. I never expected an American restaurant to have great sushi, so I had to check it out for myself. Luckily, they take reservations, so when we showed up for our party of 2 on a Friday night, we were seated after only a few minutes of waiting. The dimly lit restaurant had a cool vibe to it and was perfect for a date night. The scene was gorgeous. As soon as we were seated, our waiter came asking if he could take our drink orders. Of course I wanted to order a drink, but I needed at least 1 minute to pick the menu up to see what they were offering. I'm not sure why the waiter didn't just start us off with a welcome and some waters to give us time to look at the menu. We ended up ordering a bottle of wine and started with the Seared Tuna Roll. Of all of the sushi rolls I've had in Dallas, this one was the best! The lightly seared tuna had so much flavor and went well with the avocado and other veggies. Even the sesame oil that was drizzled on top took the taste of the roll up a notch. I highly recommend it! Next up, we ordered two Rainbow Rolls and one Osaka Style Tuna Roll. The rolls were all sensational! I can't say one bad thing about any of the rolls we ate, but I can say they were good and fresh! We ended the night sharing an order of the French Fries and they were pretty darn good. It was the perfect crisp and saltiness to give us a little difference from all of the sushi we had eaten. The food alone would have given this review 5 stars, but it was the waiter that knocked a star off. He wasn't friendly and he was anything but welcoming to us. Also, I am not sure why the hostess made us wait a few minutes before having us seated. Not only did we have a reservation, but there were many empty tables in there to not have us wait. I will definitely revisit! If their sushi was that good, I can only imagine how the other items on the menu tastes! read more

We wish they still put guest satisfaction at the forefront here. But it seems dish integrity has taken center stage. We asked them last week to slice the large pressed sashimi into eight pieces instead of four. It's a simple request, and one we've made for years. They've always been accommodating and have always done it for us, as well as the dozens of other patrons who make the same simple request. Well, the new GM has different ideas about putting guest requests first and they refused to do it this time, and said they wouldn't do it again in the future. They explained that dish integrity was of paramount importance, apparently coming BEFORE guest satisfaction. We'd understand if it was an odd request or in some way had changed the dish considerably. But it didn't. Adding an extra cut to that dish was a simple request and one they always used to accommodate. And the fact that they steadfastly refused to do it says all we need to know about the management at R+D; customers aren't as important as they used to be..... And so there's no anonymity, my name is Jason Lenox and I've been a very regular patron since the day they opened this restaurant, sometimes coming in as often as three times per week. read more

The food is good but go early. The place is busy. The atmosphere is basic. No frills.

R+D is sister restaurant for Hillstone and Houston's. Expect greatness from the family! I come here frequently and enjoy it every time! I love the wait staff, they're extremely friendly, helpful and cheerful! They're really good at expediting things and making sure that your food/drinks are getting out in a timely manner! Food to try... deviled eggs to start. Feeling like you want something light? Try their salads! My fave is the Mediterranean Seared Tuna Salad. Another winner is The Newporter. I wish they had like a salad combo because I always have a hard time deciding between the two! I would love to have the Seared Tuna with the Newporter! Haha :) If you're trying to eat healthy, try their Greek Style Chicken--two giant chicken breast seasoned to perfection!! Wild Mushroom Meatloaf is really good--it almost feels like it has an Asian twist to it. Not really sure what it is, but I love it! So mushroom-y! Just when you think you're as stuffed as you can be, don't forget about dessert! You can choose from 3 different things--ice cream sundae, carrot cake ...and something else. I've only had the ice cream sundae because it's with Belgium chocolate.. diiiiiivine. I am totally in love. It comes in a giant saucer and you pour it onto your ice cream. There's always so much chocolate left over, I almost wish I could save it for a cup of hot chocolate later! Haha!! read more

I guess I am in the minority on R&D. I just had lunch there and the cheeseburger was $15 and they asked if I wanted fries or something else and I said fries which turned out to be an additional $4. I thought the hamburger was ok, but not great and seriously $19 for a hamburger and french fries. I would guess maybe they have some specialty that is amazing and worth their prices but if so I didn't know what it was and the cheeseburger was listed at the top of the menu. I was a little excited for a moment when ordering because one of the people in our party asked for a recommendation between the veggie burger and the cheeseburger and the waitress recommended the cheeseburger highly so I thought, a $19 highly recommended cheeseburger if probably going to change my life because it is so good, but that didn't end up being the case. One of the guys with us did get the Reuben and said that it was very good. So there is that. The restaurant has a good feel despite probably being a little uppity for me for lunch. I felt a little like I was in an episode of a Southern California celebri-tante reality show. Just lots of cute women ranging in age from college age to in their 50s and all dressed up for lunch but in general not looking or seeming like there were working or in a hurry to go back to work. It is a clean nice restaurant and has an exposed kitchen area which I like because then restaurant keep the ingredient fresh and the kitchen clean because they know people are watching. There is a lot of construction just outside the front door. They are building a new building in the midst of Preston Center. I thought they were doing a really good job with access and parking considering how much construction there is. read more

It had been awhile since the hubs and I had been to R + D and after reading some reviews on Yelp I was kind of nervous but I went ahead and booked a reservation for our anniversary. It was every bit as good as we remembered, food wise and service wise. We had the dip duo for appetizer which is still as good as it ever was. Entrees were the Rubenesque with fries and the Greek style chicken. Both were fabulous. Sandwich was better than expected and the fries were so hot and fresh. The Greek style chicken was so tender (even the breast) and the tabouleh that accompanied was fresh and flavorful. For dessert (we usually skip but to celebrate 29 years figured we should indulge) we shared the banana cream pie. OMG so freaking good, we wanted to lick the plate. We refrained.
