Came here with my husband and BIL. If I'm going to come with these two guys, I better be ordering enough to feed a small village! But I digress; on to the important details
Walking up/Outside: Relatively new restaurant, brick outlay, tons of windows that appear to open up on nice days.
Ambience/Design: . As soon as you walk in you're greeted by a very thought out, purposeful design of the space. matte walnut wood tables, and lacquered birch wood walls with rustic photos of everything BBQ related on terra-cotta colored painted walls
Setup: Each table has a roll of recycled (awesome!) paper towels and 4 of their signature sauces corralled up a sauce cage. First, the moment you see this roll of paper towel, thats when you know this meal is going to get you down and dirty, and it'll be oh so delicious! So you best not wear something nice here, just in case you get it dirty! Their four sauces are the perfect complimenting elements for any of their menu selections. Sweet BBQ, Spicy BBQ, S. Carolina Mustard, and a N. Carolina vinegar blend. Their BBQ sauces have the right amount of heat, paprika and smokiness, but their mustard is definitely the most unique. The mustard has notes of Rosemary and Thyme which elevate anything you put it on. Just remember, the mustard should bring out the flavors in what you're eating, not drown it. Don't squeeze this stuff like French's mustard on a hot dog!
Service: Excellent service, occasionally you can behind a person who takes TOO long to order, so I do wish that when this happens their staff calls someone else to take customers on their other register quickly, instead of having to wait 5-7 minutes before they call someone else to man the register. Because all that's happening is they look at us with eyes that say "sorry!!" and us customers in line politely glare back "its kind of, not really, okay. When are you getting someone else".
What we got/Menu selection: Extensive menu, but we all wanted to try a little of everything so we ordered a TON. We got the Papa-Q platter (has a tasting of EACH meat they offer on their entire menu), Hush Puppies, Mac-Q-Roni, Spicy Fries, Cornbread and 3 sliders prepared Q-Style (Pulled chicken, chopped brisket and burnt brisket ends).
A) Papa-Q Platter: Now my husband, BIL and I don't do pork, so the staff was excellent about letting us swap out the BBQ Ribs, the sausage and the pulled pork for whatever we wanted. So we ended up subbing it out for extra sliced brisket, chopped brisket and burnt brisket ends. The ultimate breakdown of the platter was memphis chicken wings (excellent sweet-spicy, tangy dry rub), chopped brisket (delicious and well marinated), burnt brisket ends (caramelized goodness), sliced brisket (meh this one is ok, more on the mild side as far as seasoning is concerned), smoked turkey (the first few bites are good, but then you realize its a bit dry. But then again its turkey, so thats what happens 9/10 times anyways), pulled chicken (a definite favorite!!!!).
B) 3 Sliders Q Style: I did the pulled chicken, chopped brisket and the burnt brisket ends. All three are nestled between brioche buns. What made it Q style was what each slider was paired with. The pulled chicken was paired with memphis sweet bbq sauce, coleslaw and bacon (I omitted the bacon here-- 9/10). Chopped brisket slider q style means it was paired with N. Carolina vinegar sauce, crumbled blue cheese and cole slaw (6/10. Blue cheese was overpowering, but if you're a blue cheese fan then you might give it a 9/10!). Brisket Burnt End Slider prepared Q style was paired with sweet and spicy aioli, mozzarella and coleslaw (9.5/10)
C) Hushpuppies: Platter came with hushpuppies which we DEVOURED, and I never even liked hushpuppies before this. Literally this is the only place I'll eat or will ever eat hushpuppies from
D) Mac-Q-Roni: husband is a big fan, they crush Cheese-Its over it. creamy, al dente noodles.
E) Spicy Fries: OHHHH LORDDDD. GET THESE. DELICIOUS. Made fresh to order its tossed in a spicy seasoning and jalepeno slices that has just a slight amount of sweetness in it to tease your tastebuds. It's got just the right amount of heat in it to make you want more, but not too much where you just want to put your mouth over a fire hydrant and swear to a higher power that you'll never eat spicy food again.
F) Cornbread: meh, this one is ok, not too special, slightly sweet
TL;DR: Get the papa-Q platter especially if its your first time and you want to try a little of everything they offer. They will sub out specific meats based off preference or dietary restrictions. Get the spicy fries and hush puppies (even if you don't like hushpuppies normally, you will LOVE these). Skip the cornbread and mac-q-roni. Come in casual clothes and expect to make a mess. Don't fret if you don't finish your meal; really thought out "to-go" station for any left overs. read more
