Well. I went in there on the 4th around 7:20 PM. I noticed it was open and was deciding to either eating there or just go to Ribfest? I decided to take a menu with me. When I walked in at first, I noticed the didn't have special hours (thinking they would be open normal business hours). My thinking was that would be a bit strange to remain open with a BBQ fest happening less than a mile away but I went with it. I left and came back about 7:50 or so, having decided that I would eat there. I was only considering if I would eat there or take it with me & park somewhere before the fireworks.
I noticed something when I got back. In less than 30 minutes, there was a hand written card (about 3" x 5") saying the location was closing at 8:PM. Now remember, that sign wasn't put there 30 minutes prior, which is the only reason I came back. I was somewhat confused. Having worked in a BBQ place years ago, my thinking is that they basically ran out of meat (most of it which isn't out of the question). I walk in the the door and the first thing I was told was "we're closing in 8 minutes" not hello or some greeting of the like. I asked a couple of question relating to food and they did get answered. I did my last review about 3 years ago (almost to the month) and looks like some of the service/etiquette issues needs to be addressed. While I get wanting to leave on a holiday, this is the straw you drew and you have to own it. I've been there so I can relate. At least I wasn't on hold for 8 MINUTES like I was the last time I tried to do carry out. My order was taken quickly so at least that went well.
Now time to criticize the food. I have some VERY mixed emotions when I do this. I'm a big fan of BBQ and am ALWAYS looking for a good place. Now here goes nothing as it relates to my meal:
A. Macaroni & cheese. VERY blah at least. The last time I ordered it, I knew it had a weird taste to it but couldn't place it. Then I looked closer. As I looked closer, I noticed the taste was like Cheez-Its. I look closer and turns out I was right. Krissy B.of Lexington, KY confirmed this in her review. Can someone PLEASE explain to me WHY you would crust or top your mac & cheese with CHEEZ-IT?!?!?! Am I missing something here? This is one time where I asked where is Gordon Ramsey when I need him? It was at least edible but VERY low on the food chain as good mac & cheese goes. It wasn't well seasoned at all. In other words, do it right or get rid of it. Save your time and mine.
B. Mashed potatoes w/ gravy. TREMENDOUS although a little more gravy could be helpful. I guess it's my preference. People may not realize how fast this dish can go south (e.g., not fully cooked, over whipped, etc). Nice consistency indeed. The green beans didn't agree with me (my palate anyway) so I decided not to fill in.
C. Meat #1- Spicy wings. Now I eat habanero sauce almost daily so spice for me is pain for most. The flavor was decent but only one thing. They were a bit dry. The skin in particular was a bit tougher than I expected. Maybe I got a bad batch. My previous visit is when I had the sausages. VERY good.
D. Smoked turkey. It was strange because the pieces were either nice and moist or very dry. I've bbq-ed turkey myself (pieces and whole). I suspect someone cut into the meat before it was completely rested. That's the only was I know it can end up as dry as some pieces were. Both meats had a nice smoke flavor to them, but in places were dry.
E. Sauces- I recommend all of them (although I generally don't eat sweet BBQ). The spicy Texas sauce has some bite but the 2 vinegar-based sauces are as good as any I've had (a little better than the place I worked at and if I said who it was, you would feel good about it). The non-vinegar sauces (Texas spicy & Memphis sweet) are also on par with the place I worked at.
I REALLY want to like this place. It seems as if they take one step forward and 1-2 steps back. Service has been good or bad (as I shared before). This place had such potential but in the 3 years since my first review, it's fallen short of what I thought they'd be. Inconsistency is a bad thing. I want to dismiss it as a busy weekend but this visit was actually better than the last, which is saying a great deal. I would REALLY ASSUME not having to drive 20-25 miles for decent BBQ. There are some good places in the area. Some I REALLY believe in. Since Ribs R' Us in Westmont closed years ago, I have tried to find something that good. Some have come close. Step up your game and push for consistency and not speed. Most people who go to BBQ places are willing to wait IF the BBQ is done properly. I rated this place as I did for that very reason. I HOPE you get better. read more
