Best sweet potato fries in the world, get them Yuppy style!!! Great staff, great food!!

Was here on a Thursday night with some friends. At first glance, didn't realize that it was so small so we felt kind of silly looking for a place to sit. Waited about 10 mins and finally got greeted. Ordered drinks and we were waiting on a friend. The waitress informed us that the kitchen was closing soon. Would have been nice to know that as the sign said they closed at 2. Which turns out they don't even stay open till then either. She brings our drinks about 15 mins later, and everyone's drinks but mine. Drops them off and walks away. No explanation or anything. Waited another 5 and I finally get my drink. Food was underwhelming. It was good but I probably won't be back. The martini was good too but not enough for me to come back. Would have ordered more drinks but she was so slow. She never gave us water refills either. Then when it came to the bill, another waitress took care of it and we never saw our waitress again. Plus they have weird tablet and all of our receipts kept getting mixed up and it seemed like even the waitress was getting confused on how to work the thing. This place was good but nothing to rave about it. Probably won't be back for awhile. read more

Ok, so while I was driving down the road Facebook buzzed on my phone and, while I was stopped at red light, of course, I saw an article about this new bar opening in downtown Bryan on my news feed. My stomach was rumbling because it was about lunch time and I noticed that today was the Grand Opening at Proudest Monkey. It mentioned that opening was at 11 a.m. and that it had a kitchen: i was sold. When I walked in the door I was immediately intrigued with the spectacular blend between traditional and contemporary. Initially, I noticed the old, and assumably original, brick walls. Then I was struck with all the contemporary bar decor which includes nice dark wood trim with rustic metal inserts, tables with pub chairs, TV's at all side tables, an impressive bar which is fully stocked, and TV's behind the mirrors in the bathrooms. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I really loved the environment that Aaron and Stephanie Curs have created. Now that I've bored you to death, I guess I should talk about the food since that was the reason I was there. There is a simple lunch menu that has surprisingly reasonable prices. I opted for the pulled pork tacos and the yuppy fries (AMAZING!). My wife had a single burger and the dirty fries. The food was delicious and I am guessing that I might have to regular this place. Granted, I only come to B/CS to play shows with my band. But, I fell in love with this place SO MUCH that I went twice in 24 hours. This is now my GO-TO stop when in B/CS. First of all, let's talk about a decent beer selection: this is not your typical college bar selection. Secondly, THE BURGERS. As a most-loving burger consumer, I look for the best anywhere/everywhere I go. I love this place based on topping selection alone. Whom else gives you a list of 20 or so toppings and isn't Fudds? (Plus, here they bring it to you, which doesn't hurt one bit). The biggest surprises are the peculiars: sugar fries (I think they call them dirty fries?) and the monkey sauce. GET BOTH, I PROMISE. I would never steer another burger lover wrong. I also love that the bread isn't the focus on the burger. Don't overlook the chorizo burger! Eat it for breakfast with a fried egg on top! Overall, I wish there was another one closer to me. Also, for the record, they ARE named after the DMB song. AND THAT RULES as much as this place does. read more

We LOVE the Monkey! This is where we take out of town guests when they come for a visit. The burgers and fries are great - I need to try the tacos but haven't yet. We go during lunch just because we aren't "bar" people and we are never disappointed. It is worth the drive to Downtown Bryan. read more

The Good: - Very friendly, attentive, helpful servers and bartenders. Really excellent service! - The food really is good. Like, not just, "Oh, it's good for a bar..." They legitimately have some good stuff here. Try the fried yucca and plantains! Also, their corn tortillas were good, and didn't appear to be store-bought...? Plus, the hubs loved the mushroom burger, and he's not even a vegetarian, so you know it's a good non-meat burger when it wins over a meat-lover :). - Lots of local, Texas beers, plus some interesting cocktails that sounded delicious, but I was more in a beer-drinking mood :). - Cool décor. They did a great job renovating the inside of this place, and it feels unique and intimate, without being stuffy. The Not-Terrible, But Not-Great: - I can't tell if I was just more hungry than I realized, but for some reason, the portions just seemed small? After the fried plantains and yucca, then two tacos, I was still pretty hungry. - Our awesomely attentive server caught that my tacos were on flour tortillas instead of corn (like I requested) before he even brought out my tacos, apologized for the mixup, and said that the cook was going to fix it and he'd bring it right out. The only problem was, he seemed to have forgotten to check on them for quite some time, so when they came out like 10 minutes later, they were totally cold, which tells me they were ready quite a while before then. The tacos seemed like they were pretty good, but honestly, they would probably be more memorable if they had even been a little warm. I noticed a sign on the front saying they were looking for more kitchen staff, including cooks, AND it was a busy night, so I'm certainly not going to write them off for this, but I'll earmark them as another restaurant for us to try again maybe a little later :). I don't know where to begin. The food was good but it may have been only for the fact that I was starving and would have eaten anything put in front of me. We have been a few times and this time I was prompted to write a review. They're slow. Do NOT come in if you only have a short time for lunch or even dinner. Today in particular, it took over an hour for 5 tacos to come out from the kitchen. 3 people ordered and they came on only two plates. We also ordered yuppy fries and dirty sweet potato fries.. We received two orders of dirty regular fries. We opted for a no fix because we didn't want to wait for it. Also saw a few couples leave in frustration from waiting. As for the food, I like it here. Friend had the fish tacos and said they were bland while I had the beef which were fabulous (but then again I was about to pass out from starvation at 9pm). Honestly so gross. My burger was wet and smelled so foul. Took a few bites and the meat tasted so gross. Really disappointing.

Wasn't /bad/, but nothing to write home about. The tacos were pricey. Too small for the price. Their pulled pork, which is there best apparently, I didn't really care for. I don't know about drink prices, but I don't think I'll be back for the tacos. The fries were very good. I wouldn't be opposed to grabbing some fries with a beer at some point, as I noticed a pretty decent selection of beers. I tasted the chorizo burger, that was pretty different and not too bad. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but it could be much worse. read more

Finally tried this place out!! It is mostly a bar, with a couple food tables. A very cool atmosphere though! The food was pretty good, I got there chicken sandwich and boyfriend got a burger! The Yuppy sweet potato fries were too die for!! The service was fast and the staff was friendly! I only give it a 4 stars because the chicken sandwich was pretty bland and dry but nothing ranch couldn't fix! Definitely give this place a try!! :) read more

I love the tacos (which are huge) and am a big fan of the plantains and yucca. The service has always been on the slow side, so if you're short on time, be very upfront if you need anything and ask for the check early. I like to pop in before a show at the Grand Stafford Theater next door. It's best for groups of 4 or less. read more

Went to the Proudest Monkey tonight to get a bite before spending New Year's Eve indoors away from the rain and the crazies. What a fabulous place. A great selection of craft beers. The hubby and I split an Arrogant B***ard Ale, then he enjoyed a 90 minute pale ale from Dogfish Head and I had one of Lagunitas' Little Sumpin' Sumpin's ... fabulous. We split the Chorizo burger which was absofreakinlutely fantabulous and we each had one pulled pork taco ... also phenomenal. We also shared the yuppy fries which we both thought were delish (if not just a bit too salty). I topped off the meal with a Lost Gold IPA from Real Ale, just as the place was starting to fill up for New Year's Eve. Steven, our waiter/bartender was a delight, as was Landon who was trying to hang a Happy New Year's sign while we were there. It was a fabulous experience. We will definitely be back read more

The staff were very friendly, the menu choices were ample for a bar. I ended up building a burger, and added plantains and yucca as the side. We split the redneck strawberry shortcake for dessert. The beer selection was extensive but nothing on tap was strange for a bar. read more

Gosh, I wish they had beer on tap. But the specialty drinks are fun. Aside from that, I love the atmosphere, and the bar food is yummy. Especially the portobello blue cheese burger and the portobello tacos. And don't get me started about the sweet potato fries.... the yuppy fries are delicious! Jesus fucking Christ this place is so cool. Let's start out with the location here because it definitely adds to the rating. It's right in down town Brian, just a little hole in the wall. You walk and and it's far from a large place but the atmosphere is very refreshing. Low lighting, usually a decent amount of people for it size, it's very inviting. The servers and bartenders that I've had have all been very kind and quick with getting a complicated order out. It's also a great place to watch any type of sports with the amount of TVs provided. But THE best thing about this place is the "out of the box" tacos and amazing food. Every single item I've tried (and I've tried most of them) have been so good, I'm never disappointed. The drinks are very reasonably priced as well, and are much better than many other bars here in town. If you've never been definitely check it out. read more

I'm a vegetarian, so no burger review here. My fiancé and I shared fish and portobello tacos. The corn tortillas were pretty flimsy, and the focus is on slaw rather than salsa, but they were refreshing and felt healthy. We also had the market salad with portabellos. It was an eclectic salad with strawberries, blue cheese, and more. Nothing life changing, but good. What I would go back for again and again are the sweet potato fries. I am a fries connoisseur and these are some of my favorite. Soft, flat, wide fries with multiple seasoning options. We tried both the dirty and yuppy and I preferred the yuppy, probably because they were saltier. I wanted to order more right away. Another bonus: super friendly staff! read more

Monkey's OK. They have a decent beer selection, and list them on the menu, which is helpful because the beers are displayed about a million miles in the air on the darkest, topmost shelf behind the bar. Lots of Texas stuff, but if you're downtown and you want something special, you'll have to go to Rev. Second best beer selection downtown. They have great bloody marys - this is a Paddock offshoot, and Paddock has really good bloody marys (or at least had) - especially when they're spicy. Tasty olives, a pickle, and a creepy pickled okra. Bloody mary + shared fries = meal. The food is tasty enough, I like that the tacos have a good balance of cooked and fresh ingredients like cabbage and jicama. They really need the fresh stuff because everything here that is cooked is a grease bomb. I always hurt after I eat here, which is basically why I've stopped coming here. When it first opened, it was the go to place for food right before a show, but the greasiness has made me stay away. Monkey sauce is really tasty, and you should get it with everything. It's a mayo based sauce that goes good on fries, tacos, and portobello burgers. The crowd is sorta wierd, like post college yuppies or something that travel in packs, with a few lonesome old guys scattered at the bar. Go earlier before it gets too crowded, unless you're a yuppie that travels with a pack. The TVs in the bathroom mirrors are creepy. read more

This place is what it is, a small bar with food. It was hard to see from the street because it doesn't have a large sign, just a small door. However, when you do find it, it will be worth it. The mixed drinks with ice cream are amazing, I loved the Dreamsicle martini. The burgers were so good but not so big we couldn't finish them. We came in around 2pm on a Saturday and waited a few minutes for a table to get cleaned so we could be seated. There were still lots of people coming in after us! I got the jefe burger on a pretzel bun and the yuppy sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries were amazing! Perfect texture inside and out. Perfect flavor. The burger was meh. Too soggy. Could not taste the mango pico. The chorizo patty was too salty, although I guess it balanced a bit with the fried egg.
