Yes, they're back! I was eating, drinking and playing pool here back in the 70's and 80's. After a fire and renovations, they were gone for a long while. I feared it might be permanent. On my last trip to Bryan a family member wanted to have his birthday lunch here. I'm in! Let people say what they might about Chicken Oil, but the fact of the matter is at lunch, the parking lot was full and there was a line waiting to order. Can't be too bad huh? The decor? Well, as before, there's almost no open spot on the walls. Very rustic with a comfortable feel. They also have a great outdoor patio. Looks like a great place for a party! Their burgers were what I remembered the most, so that's what I went with. They also had great looking chicken and chicken-fried-steak country baskets as well as shrimp baskets and sandwiches. Everything our group had was pleasing. There were definitely no complaints from any of us. Yep, I will be back! Liked the decoration inside. As it's self serviced of ordering first then wait until your food is ready, it's very basic dining experience.. Food wise, we had lots of fries as we didn't know it came with our meals. I had chicken fried steak and it was one of the smallest portion ever had. It was more of a sandwich size Overall, as their name implies, lots of greasy and oily food. The 2 stars are for the decoration which was fun, but food wise, I think it can be better. read more

I can't believe this place has such bad reviews. I've been coming here since I was 2 years old (so maybe the nostalgia makes the food taste better?). This was my first time visiting Chicken Oil Co. I loved the rustic vibe inside. The prices are very reasonable here! Ambiance: Very busy and lively at dinner time. There is tons of seating and you order at the counter. The cashiers were mediocre but the individuals bussing the tables were exceptional. Extremely kind and constantly cleaning up after us! Chicken bites: These chicken bites remind me of McDonalds. I don't really enjoy McDonalds McNuggets so it wasn't my favorite. 1/4 lb cheeseburger: Compared to other reviews I thought the bun was good and the burger was very juicy. It had great flavor but it is on the smaller side. It didn't come with a side and you needed to order it separate. Fries: I liked the thick cut fries and they are very soft rather than crispy. It was a quiet afternoon in College Station about 230 my brother-in-law and I got a couple of burgers which were really good and the place was fantastic. Lots of memorabilia and lots of text to Darlene and as Texas as you could be. Country music set the stage for a great dining experience. Highly recommended. This had to be the worst burger I've ever had. It was like Sysco restaurant supply delivered low grade meat and then chicken oil just slaps it on a grill and serves it on a bun. It has no flavor, the bun was dry and the best part of the ENTIRE meal were the tater tots. And that is sad because I'm sure those came frozen in a bag. This was a terrible burger. After decades as a Chicken Oil customer, this was my first visit following the remodel. There was a light crowd and four employees playing a game with bottle caps behind the register. The kitchen staff was standing around. The girl who took my order acted like it was an inconvenience. Burger was just OK, and had very little lettuce and tomato. When I asked for more, the server rolled his eyes. This town is full of friendly young people - somehow the manager of this place has hired a crew of mostly unfriendly and unmotivated ones. had a cheese burger and fries about a week after they reopened after being closed for several years.. they have a long way to be ready to be open. burger was dark crunchy and over cooked. it had some funky taste like maybe burnt grease. the bun smashed and wet. and the fries...i had 3 types! dark hard ones...squishy ones that must have been boiled..and others very under cooked. this was unexpected after once being among the best burgers in brazos valley..i will try again after 6 months..by then hopefully they return to the good ole days read more

My quest for a solid replacement for Fitzwilly's continues. While this succeeded in atmosphere and feel, the food did not. First, the atmosphere and decor. LOVE it. Very old-school College Station. Very old-school Northgate, even though it's not on Northgate. This is The Dixie Chicken's sister location, and it shows. Note that is is NOT The Chicken. This is more of a restaurant that serves beer, while The Chicken is primarily a bar. Anyway, lots of old wood, old signs, taxidermy, and heavily carved-up / inscribed tables. Love it. Next, the food and service. The chick who took my order was friendly enough. No real complaints about service. It's not sit-down; you order at the counter and they call your name. Just like old-school Northgate - nothing wrong with that. Food didn't take long to be ready. That's where things got hit or miss... All meat is frozen / pre-prepared. Nothing is handmade or breaded in house. My burger was juicy and well cooked, but it didn't seem to have any seasoning and it just... wasn't special. It was fine - just not worth the money. Should have been cheaper. My wife's buffalo chicken sammich was pretty good, she said. Other chicken tenders ordered by the table were more of the same - frozen and pre-made, then cooked to order. So... meh. The sweet potato fries and onion rings were fantastic. Perfectly fried. Hot frier, perfect crisp, not very greasy if greasy at all. And they have beer. So my take: I'd come back for atmosphere, beer, and munchies. I would NOT order meat / meals here again... unless I'm just having fries and onion rings for dinner. And go for the sweet potato fries over the regular fries. Regular fries were... too regular. Nothing special. Better than A-OK, but not stellar. They could be so much more with more food (meat meals) made in-house. *** CORRECTION: I have been informed that meat is NOT frozen and is delivered fresh each morning. My apologies. The burger didn't *seem* to be freshly hand-made, but it's not frozen before cooking. It still could use that "little something" to make it stand out and be more memorable, but the meat is fresh and never frozen. Although it looks small from afar, but when you step in you see a blast from the past with some ranch house vibe tossed in. The burgers are perfectly salty, with a smaller bun so not to stifle the other ingredients. With amazing customer service and tables that have thousands of names carved in, you can tell this is a restaurant that has stood the test of time. Also have great milkshakes and fries. Their cookies are delightfully soft, the entire atmosphere of the restaurant is very homely. With enough space to host three parties at the same time and a few arcade machines, I would highly recommend everyone stop by for a late night burger. read more

If you are handicapped try the BBQ place next door - their parking lot is fresh concrete, and no stairs to deal with. Surprises me that the city (Bryan) hasn't made them deal with the potholes and stairs inside issues under ADA violations? Where are the ADA ambulance chasers when you need them? Burger and fries are very good! Iced tea is excellent. The tables are old wood tables that people have carved their names & initials in and give the place character, but a culture swab in a petrie dish growth would probably reveal all kinds of stuff you don't want to think about while eating!!!! This restaurant's atmosphere is where it's at! What a fun place to hang out and eat! They have so much to look at on the walls and ceiling making it a scenic adventure for the visual senses. They also have a few old school arcade games. Fun! And they have three different areas for dining, giving lots of seating options. I love the rustic tables and ambiance. The food was good. They said they are known for their burgers so I got one. It was good. I wouldn't say it was one of the best burgers I've ever had. But it was good for sure. I also got sweet potato fries and they were way too overcooked to the point that I didn't like them. And I LOVE sweet potato fries usually. Hopefully this is not the norm. More details for a review since going tonight: fried pickles are way too breaded- there's like a tiny pickle in the middle of a bread sandwich. Kids chicken nuggets look similar to McDonald's and cost $5. Tonight I tried the grilled sandwich because I had just had a burger earlier today- I definitely should have gone with the burger- the chicken sandwich wasn't bad or anything- chicken cooked well but it didn't compare to their usual burger with cheese :) mad house on game weekends so I wouldn't recommend coming if you don't want a wait- a wait to order and wait to get your food. Rustic old school vibe similar to the Dixie Chicken so you can tell it's the same owner... love it! Basic menu with specials every now and again. You order at the counter which could be the only downfall of the place given the line can get really backed up though this also adds to it's charm. You also have to cut through the line for the restroom which is one single restroom. I ordered the monthly special which was the buffalo bleu patty melt. Worth every bite... on Texas toast with grilled onions, bleu cheese, dressing and buffalo sauce. You had the option of a half or quarter pound burger and I opted for quarter. Perfect amount. One would think the burgers were hand patted and the onion rings would be homemade...NO THEY ARE NOT! Food is from a Ben E. Keith restaurant type supply store. Much like its relative the Dixie Chicken, the Oil Co. has the usual worn wood / old beer hall interior that always seems to make fried food taste better. Went in with family the other day and it brought back memories when I was younger, I loved this place as a child and I still love the decor but it has definitely fell off over the years food wise. Our food was hot which is good but it just wasn't satisfying like it used to be. Taste is different and the food certainly has changed. It was nice and quiet though when we went which we did enjoy , fiancé was upset when we sat at a table that had food sauce still on it Bc it wasn't cleaned properly but he didn't complain, they have nice games and televisions so it's sweet for the kids at least. We were not greeted when entering & walking up to the order bar but other then that I guess the staff was ok. Family and I visited College Station for a football game. Having never been, we took advice from many different friends/family who had been. Chicken Oil Company had been advised as a 'go to' place, so on our way out of town, we stopped. First, I really liked the decor. It was very....... Texas. Lots of animal heads, dark wood, and signs/things everywhere. I ordered the chicken fried steak, and the fried jalapenos. The fried jalapenos were delicious. The chicken fried steak was..... very standard. It was huge, but I didnt care for the gravy, and the breading didnt have much flavor. I also tried the sweet tea, but it wasnt very good.
