Really I don't understand what the hype is about. I had fried chicken fried. Really bland in the end. Nothing exciting. Like fast food without the chain name and a more interesting atmosphere to sit. A family with small kids may enjoy the place. Nice choice of craft bottle soda. read more

Wanted to have dinner at a College Station iconic restaurant ... its an iconic setting but the food is far from that! One would think the burgers were hand patted and the onion rings would be homemade...NO THEY ARE NOT! Food is from a Ben E. Keith restaurant type supply store. Sweet potato fries greasy and gross, Hamburgers not hand patted just a frozen type patty. Over all the service was fine, plenty of seating just POOR food quality for a place that is associated with the iconic Dixie Chicken. Take the time and drive over to "Coppe Bridge Bar & Grill" and get some homemade food! read more

While this is (apparently) an A&M tradition, I had never even heard of it until shortly before our recent visit. Much like its relative the Dixie Chicken, the Oil Co. has the usual worn wood / old beer hall interior that always seems to make fried food taste better. On our game day visit, it was packed, but they kept things moving in a friendly and efficient manner. Just had the typical burger/fries combo, and it definitely did the job. If you're looking for that kind of meal, the Oil Co. is a good choice. read more

My cousin turned me onto Chicken Oil Co. back in 1984, I moved away from College Station and forgot about this gem. Move forward to last year and I decided to move back to College Station, and my cousin asked me had gone back to Chicken Oil Co., and it had slipped my mind. Well I went the next day it was the same place as it was 1984, and the food was great. One of the best tasting burgers in the state. Don't be like me and forget about this wonderful gem, go! read more

It was amazing the burgers were amazing. Onion rings were amazing. The best I've had in a while. Chicken finger were ok kids would love them but nothing special. The fries were amazing maybe some seasonings would be awesome. The atmosphere was awesome for sure. The girls at the counter where you place your order was rude true patio area tables were ok not the best no shade. Parking lot kind of rough. read more

Went in with family the other day and it brought back memories when I was younger, I loved this place as a child and I still love the decor but it has definitely fell off over the years food wise. Our food was hot which is good but it just wasn't satisfying like it used to be. Taste is different and the food certainly has changed. It was nice and quiet though when we went which we did enjoy , fiancé was upset when we sat at a table that had food sauce still on it Bc it wasn't cleaned properly but he didn't complain, they have nice games and televisions so it's sweet for the kids at least. We were not greeted when entering & walking up to the order bar but other then that I guess the staff was ok. Food is a bit overpriced for the quality of it not being as good like it used to years ago. Clean parking lot . I guess this sums it all up. read more

Family and I visited College Station for a football game. Having never been, we took advice from many different friends/family who had been. Chicken Oil Company had been advised as a 'go to' place, so on our way out of town, we stopped. First, I really liked the decor. It was very....... Texas. Lots of animal heads, dark wood, and signs/things everywhere. I ordered the chicken fried steak, and the fried jalapenos. The fried jalapenos were delicious. The chicken fried steak was..... very standard. It was huge, but I didnt care for the gravy, and the breading didnt have much flavor. I also tried the sweet tea, but it wasnt very good. Im willing to return, but I will try something different next time. read more

Apparently, being a college town, Bryan/College Station has a lot of fun, greasy cheeseburger dives. Chicken Oil Company is another one of these options. It's also owned by the same folks who own the Dixie Chicken that's an A&M institution. For one thing, they have chips and salsa. The salsa is pretty standard restaurant supply house salsa, but the chips are fried to order on site and are excellent. I tried the 1/2 pound Snuffy burger with fries and a drink. The burger was excellent. It tasted like a double-thick Whataburger patty on a toasted bun with melted cheese. In other words, it was almost a double meat on a grilled cheese. The fries are standard frozen fries, but they're hot and crispy. There's a good variety of soft drinks, both fountain and bottle, as well as iced tea. If I'd mark them down for anything, it's that they're such an institution that some of the nicknamed items on the menu need an explanation. It's hard to know the difference between a Snuffy burger and some of the other burger options, for instance. read more

I don't know where to start with this fantastic slice of College Station life. I think it might be the greatest restaurant in the world. This might be hyperbole. Let's start with the decor. IT'S AWESOME. If you look up the word "Rustic" on Wikipedia, there's a picture of this place. They'll probably delete the picture within a couple hours though so you should hurry up and look at it. I lost count of how many animal heads adorned the walls because I was too busy looking at the awesome tables and knotty wood posts. There's a fireplace there too, for when, upon wintry nights, you find yourself in need of warmth and comfort. The food, somehow, manages to surpass the glory of the decor. My dining companion and I split an entirely delicious half-pound jalapeño cheeseburger and an order of Tijuana fries. The burger came out with a giant pile of peppers on it--none of that three-jalapeño Whataburger crap up in this piece. The meat itself was cooked to perfection. It was super tasty, you guys. Super tasty. The fries were regular fries made more awesome by the power of cheese. Were they the best fries I've ever had? No. But they're still amazing. My meal was delicious, affordable, and pretty much incredible. A++. I'm not an Aggie, but it made me want to whoop. read more

Definitely a cute place to hangout and/or visit while in College Station! Food----mediocre at best. I got the Chicken platter. The formerly frozen fries were, honestly, the best part of my meal. Atmosphere---5+ stars, for sure! It made me happy. :)) read more

Atmosphere is manufactured rustic. Prices are a little high. Willie and Waylon on the jukebox (catering to the Aggie crowd - smart). The Snuffy Burger (no explanation on how a snuffy burger is different from a burger burger?) is excellent. I would rank it as one of the best burgers in the state. The flavor is excellent. It's cooked well and even though it's juicy, it holds together well. The fries are excellent. There's not much in the way of service but you order at the counter, so there's not much need for service. If I wanted a burger and I was anywhere near Bryan/ College Station, I'd make a special trip to come here. Smiley face and a star read more

One of the better burger joints in town. When I first came down to Aggieland on 1991 this was on the list of must try as much for the food as the tradition. IMO you can't say you have truly been to Aggieland without trying the Chicken Oil. Ps: try and find the jackalope read more

Had been awhile since we dined here due to changes they made, so we decided to give it another try. Think we will be staying with our old faithful Koppe Bridge. Waited 30 minutes for our food for it to come out cold. Onion rings, Texas toothpicks and burgers all cold. Cheese not melted on burgers. The amount of Texas toothpicks that were in the basket was a rip off for $7.00. Probably 1/2 cup worth. Used to be they gave you a basket full. Ask to talk to manager, which was a young girl and she didn't seem to care. Said she had to send someone home so they were short of help. I counted 6 people in the kitchen. When I told her about the TTP she said General Management made those changes. IMO... if you want a hot meal with decent portions, you are better off going somewhere else! read more

Really good burgers. Add death for some extra tasty heat! Great place for large groups and very casual dining room. Not sure about the rest of the menu but no one complained about the food in our group of 15. read more

I went to this place on the advice of a ex-Aggie friend and have no reference of other burger places in Bryan/College Station. This is a rustic looking place with a lot of random stuff on th wall. You can carve your name on the tables or write on the wall. They had a couple of TV's through out the restaurant. You walk up to the kitchen window to to order. The food is not as cheap as I would expect in a college town, but it was pretty good. I would recommend the burger and the Tijuana fries. I've had better burgers in other towns so not rating it too high. I think it's mostly a local hangout. read more

Took my in-laws there for a burger because years ago they were pretty good. Bad mistake. Worst burger I've had in a long time. Bottom bun was ice cold, asked for jalapeños and they loaded it with seracha sauce that was cold also. Nobody was happy with their burger. Was so embarrassed . Will never return. So sad to see this local icon of a place go down the tubes. No wonder there was only a couple people there. read more

The food here is awful!!! The gravy is runny and the chicken fried steak just down right not edible! They did not have any sweet tea when ordered and 20 mins into the meal still no sweet tea. When we asked the guy behind the counter he made a face like it was a problem to get sweet tea ready. This food I wouldn't even take home to my dog as leftovers. very very disappointing for it to be here in Bryan/College station. TERRIBLE staff, rude and don't care! $9.53... 1.5 hours of work wasted on a mediocre burger in a wonderfully decorated shack. After reading many positive reviews of this foundation's famous burgers, I decided to try one for myself. Despite the classic decoration of the restaurant, the burger itself was subpar and completely devoid of the "bang for your buck" factor. Although the taste was above average, the small size of the burger, along with the 30 minute wait for my food, resulted in a highly disappointing overall experience. A large snack at best, I would not recommend this establishment for any truly hungry American, Aggie or not. read more

So sad.... the Burgers are not what they use to be, they taste like frozen patties. The chicken strips were alright, however the gravy had a consistency of milk. Only saving grace was the beer was still ice cold. Disappointed on how much the food has changed, won't be back. read more

Burger Tour, On Assignment Although saddened by not being able to complete an official Tour stop today because of office travel, we couldn't imagine not eating and judging a burger on Friday. So this Tour report is unique. It is being written by a rookie author and the establishment reviewed was not in Northwest Florida. Today, three of our members and a standard alternate judge visited the Chicken Oil restaurant, in College Station, TX. The Chicken Oil is a place where we felt right at home - a wooden establishment with rusted tin everywhere. True to Texas style, wild game was mounted everywhere, we were encouraged to whittle on the tables, gun themed bumper stickers were abundant ("Fight Crime - Shoot Back") and a fight almost broke out at the original Buck Hunter arcade game (not to be confused with the adjacent Buck Hunter, Safari edition). The Chicken Oil is definitely the love child of a Cracker Barrel and a Bass Pro Shop. We remained true to the Tour's order standards and braved the Snuffy combo, a 1/2lb hand formed patty with American cheese, although we were tempted to add a half a menu of add-ons, including the "Death" version with jalapenos and Tabasco. The bread was a fresh, seedless, traditional hamburger bun. The patty was perfectly proportioned to the bun, juicy and topped with extremely fresh condiments. Receiving exceptional comments were the bread and the onions. The condiments, which are rarely raved about, really complemented the flavor and the three basic elements (bread, meat & toppings) blended nicely. With those accolades, is there any room for improvement? Believe it or not, the raved about bread left us imagining what it would be like if it were toasted with butter. Maybe an untouchable bread score? The meat, although juicy, fell prey to the "we don't want to/can't season meat before cooking" trap that is all too common in the "heart conscious" restaurant world. (We're ordering a hamburger here! Add salt and seasonings to the meat. If we were heart conscious, we would not be ordering a hamburger.... And yes, there is a difference between adding seasonings before and after cooking.) How did it rate with Pensacola's best? Remember, we're talking about Texas here. They truly believe everything IS bigger and better there. So, to remain neighborly, we'll let them believe it, but, just for us locals, it's around CJ's and Top's. And until next week the tour rolls on...........www.nwflburgertour.com read more

I have now been to this location twice, and can confirm my 3-star rating x2. Neither time impressed me, but it is definitely a fine place to have a meal. No world beating, record breaking tastefest, but a simple honest meal at a simple honest price. I decided to try the famous "death" burger, and came away less than impressed. Essentially, this death on a bun is simply tabasco sauce added to the meat, and some jalapenos on top. The fries are good, especially combined with their homemade ranch dressing. The fried pickle chips had too much breading for my liking, but were sufficiently hot enough to scald my tongue. I'll likely go back again, as my wife and her friends like the place, but I highly doubt they will ever get more than 3-stars from this guy. If you are a burger connoisseur, pass this one right by. read more

Chicken Oil - Our boys get to enjoy what their parents loved long before they were born! - Burgers Near Me - Bryan, Texas

Best damn chicken fried steak in town. Hands down. The sides aren't the greatest but the chicken fried steak is absolutely amazing.

They completely forgot our to-go order. By the time we got our food (over 30 minutes for 3 burgers and 2 fries), our meals were cold.

Not as good as I remembered it (but I was younger then). Still a good burger with nice atmosphere, though.

The musty smell of this place was so bad when I walked in, that I should have walked back out. I ordered grilled chicken nachos, and it was just a pile of greasy stale chips with shredded cheese that was once melted, then hardened, on top. There was way too much of it, too. The chicken was dry, sparse and buried under the cheese mess. That was all that was on it, chicken and cheese. My kids liked their cheeseburgers, but the fries were undercooked and not seasoned at all. read more

Stepping through its rustic walls is akin to stepping back to the days of past. With vintage oil and gas signage, animal trophies, and other Texas memorabilia, this diner is the perfect embodiment of the great state of Texas. With a delicious variety of food, you're sure to find a filling meal to your liking. The meals were prepared quickly and handed to us by friendly, polite, and smiling employees. Everything about my experience lived up to the iconic reputation of the Dixie Chicken Oil Company. Man, I used to pig out here regularly. The burgers are great but it's the decor that takes the cake. It's like every Texas stereotype all in one place. Loves it. If you go to A&M, this must be a feeding spot for you. read more

This was my first visit here and had a basic burger, There was nothing special about it but certainly edible. The fries were the better part of the deal. There are a lot of items on the menu and certainly worth coming back to see what else is out there. read more

Meh. The ambiance of this place is really cool, but that's about as good as it got for me. Hubby and the teen got burgers and they enjoyed them. They also both got the jalapeno sausage and said it was good. I should have gotten a burger as well but wasn't in the mood so I opted for the chicken fried steak. Now, to give you some background, we'd been touring A&M all day, like several sessions, campus tours, and what felt like 15 million steps on my fitbit. We realized we'd only had one cup of coffee for the day and it was already 4:30. Oh, and it was 40 degrees out and misting rain the whole time we were touring campus so we were tired, hangry, and willing to eat just about anything. Fast forward to my chicken fried steak. I'd already read reviews that it wasn't good, but decided to try it. Stupid, silly girl. It wasn't that good. The meat had the consistency of a large mushy steak finger. Pretty sure it was frozen, as were the fries. This is Texas. If you can't do a chicken fried steak right, then just don't. I'm sure they have other things on the menu that are much better, but I'd avoid the chicken fried steak. Beyond that, the place had a ton of things on the wall and was fairly busy even between meals. As someone else said, the parking lot is definitely something to pay attention to. Drive slow and you'll be fine. Lots of pot holes. read more

Chicken Oil - Chicken Fried Steak plate - Burgers Near Me - Bryan, Texas

I have gone to Chicken Oil Co many times but I think I have yet to get the famous burger... opps! I will in a couple weeks when I'm up there and update this review. They were in Texas Monthly for their burger as one of the top 50 burgers in Texas so I really need to try it. What I normally get is the chicken tenders. They are delicious! They come with Texas toast which I could just eat all day by its self and white gravy which I dip the toast in which just makes it even more amazing. The chicken fingers are always good also. Then why do they get 3 stars instead of 4? NO SWEET TEA! What kind of hole in the wall burger place in College Station doesn't serve sweet tea. If they get some sweet tea I may bump them up to 5 stars after I try the burger. Hopefully they will read this! The building is in a weird location and its hard to describe but its at an intersection that isn't all 90 degree angles and its on one of the corners that are less than 90 degrees, you will understand when you see it, so parking isn't the most organized thing but there is always plenty. The "decor" inside is very college town burger joint which is great! There are old signs and license plates everywhere. Its a great place to bring your dad when he is in town so he can reminisce on his good ol' college days. read more

I've changed my mind! 3 to 4 stars :) This is my go-to place for burgers in the BCS area. I do love Stover Bros, but it makes me feel like death. I'm not a Grub fan, so Chicken Oil is the one for me! Ok so I have some relatives that live in College Station which normaly would be one of the the only reasons I would ever come to College Station. Well the number 22 burger according to Texas Monthly has become another reason to not dread coming here. The Snuffy Burger is best enjoyed as prepared by Chicken Oil Co. I'm not usually a fan of mustard but their mix is actually pretty good. The beef is excellent and the bun is prepared correctly. The atmosphere is "Aggie Rustic." If enjoy seeing old gas signs and deeply carved wooden tables than you'll enjoy this place. They also have a stage so I guess some live music is there sometimes. read more
