I was SO EXCITED to find out that there is a Cookshack in College Station! We stopped here for lunch on a Sunday before heading home. We were BLOWN AWAY by the number of college students, dressed in their Sunday's best, openly praying over their food before enjoying some awesome chicken. It was SO NICE TO SEE! We ordered a family meal (20 pieces), 2 sides of fries and a chicken sandwich meal. We paid around $40. Great value! The food came out quick and arrived hot and fresh. I had a slight "issue" where I thought my chicken wasn't fully cooked and the manager reassured me that it was just breading but happily remade my sandwich to give me peace of mind. I REALLY appreciated that. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals, literally leaving "not a fry left behind." The size of my chicken on the sandwich was HUGE- had to be hanging off the roll by 2" on each side! Staff were phenomenal. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Love the laid back decor. Really good! In fact, it's a contender for my favorite fried chicken in town. The only undecided winner so far is Mess Waffles. The Cookshack has a different vibe and feels more like a lunch or dinner spot, while Mess is the perfect breakfast place. Alright, who am I reviewing again? Right. The Cookshack has some great options, and my wife and I went for the Chicken & Waffles. I chose the hottest seasoning they had--pretty sure it was ghost pepper--and yeah, it was spicy but didn't make me miserable. There was a lot of food, and it definitely filled us up. I stopped here on a trip to A&M and it was almost life changing. I have never had such a good chicken sandwich ever! I knew I was in for something special when I saw them pull out a juicy raw chicken breast and batter it by hand before gently lowering into the deep fryer. It was thick, hot, and juicy with a super crispy layer on the outside side. The bun and toppings only embellished the meal with extra balance of pickles and savory flavors. Conveniently located on University Ave. Great place to watch a game, since there are six tvs. I went on a Tuesday night when it was basically empty. The only other people in line were picking up food deliveries to deliver. Service was fast and organized. Place was very clean. I had the 5 tenders with medium heat, which was not overly spicy. Unfortunately I did feel like the tenders were a little dry. Sweet potato fries were pretty great. (They did recommend the dragon fries but I was being conservative the heat levels that night.) You know you've found a place that takes HOT seriously if you have to sign a _waiver._ (and no, we passed on that one) Chicken kale salad to share, 5 medium-hot tenders, coleslaw, and dragon fries. And a huge thanks to Brittanni for walking us thru the menu, we had tons of questions as first timers! We sat down with our drinks, and in no time she was over at our table with a 'sampler' tray: one tender of Texas hot, the Mac and cheese, sweet potato fries and a few additional sauces that we didn't order. (WOW! Talk about trying to make a long term customer out of two first timers!!) Y'all, seriously, there isn't a single thing that isn't super tasty in EVERYTHING we had! And the service was truly OUTSTANDING! The Texas hot was right up hubby's alley, but was a bit much for me. 5 medium-hot tenders were a huge PILE of chicken in the tray! These were some seriously large yard birds! Dragon fries have an interesting spice and sweet, really good fresh and hot. Hubby devoured the sweet potato fries in our 'try it' tray. I had two and thought they tasted like dessert. My mouth is still watering from the combination of the tenders and the house made ranch. And the kale salad? Not to be missed!! It was a refreshing light crunch between the delicious heat of the chicken tenders. And the salad itself has a healthy dose of shredded chicken. So good! The Mac and cheese was not my cup of tea (do I detect goat cheese?) and yet I still find myself going for another bite because the crispy browned parts and it's swimming in sauce. This place is the most consistently good restaurant I have been to in College Station. The menu is rather simple with not too many options. However, everything they cool, they cook it to perfection, be it the pork ribs, the chicken tenders, or the fries and other sides. They also have a fun AMF challenge if you are brave enough to try mind-numbingly spicy chicken tenders (you have to sign a waiver before doing the challenge)! Polar opposite of a chef driven establishment. This place was created or ruined by some MBA school graduate (I am one so I can dis them). They worked hard to eliminate every bit of cost - no knives unless you ask since that's something else which takes up Capex, Opex, has to be washed, etc. Cheapest possible brown paper towels for napkins Decor included terrazzo patterned concrete floors, pockmarked with 6-12" holes which were later filled in with ? Plastic or some substance which no one any effort to come close to matching the color. Having trouble describing the rest of the decor - 'wasteland' comes to mind. Food was forgettable - I should have chosen something fried. They only have mass produced salad dressings which arrive at the back dock in 55 gallon drums. No oil & vinegar. Even the ice was forgettable - I did try to first mix lemonade for an Arnold Palmer (again, a powered concoction), then sweet tea - neither worked out well. If you're going to procure ingredients from Sysco, etc., please aim a little higher in terms of their quality / selection. read more

Unprepared to be open apparently. We got there shortly after they opened and the doors were locked. The party in front of us had to be let in by an employee and we had to knock to be let in. There was no tea brewed yet and the soda machine didn't dispense anything. That left one option which was lemonade. Our food was just okay. The Texas hot heat level is pretty hot but the chicken itself was dry and didn't have a hint of salt/seasoning in the batter. All you taste is the heat level but no interesting flavor. My boyfriend and I came here around lunch time and it was decently packed. Everything came out super fresh and delicious! I ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of sweet potato fries. The portion size was huge and we were stuffed by the time we finished eating. The fries were so hot and crispy!! It was probably my favorite part of the meal. I wasn't a huge fan of the waffles... maybe personal preference but imo it was too thick/doughy. Next time I would just go with the tenders and a side to save a little money. As for the spice level, I got mild because I didn't feel like dying but it tasted like regular tenders. I probably could've gone up to medium if I actually wanted some heat. My boyfriend ordered the chicken sandwich and thought it was also good. He chose the medium heat level and didn't think it was too spicy either. It could've been offset by the coleslaw and pickles that came with the sandwich. Or maybe our spice tolerance is just really high. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place! Came here for the first time with my family just before they closed on a weekday. We were practically the only customers about an hour before they shutdown. We ordered the chicken and waffles (huge delicious portion), chicken sandwich (simple and delicious), and the ribs and tenders (super tender ribs and crispy tenders). They were all delicious and we thought it was a cool feature where they cook the meats in a spice level type of oil. Medium spice was perfect for me. They have a AMF (Adios Mother F*cker) spice level if you wanna kill yourself lol. The mac and cheese and french fries are delicious. All the staff are friendly and fast. Upon entering you are greeted and the staff is very friendly & accommodating. The facility is laidback & casual, with both and table seating. Honestly not impressed with the sandwich. Have had better chicken sandwiches from Popeyes. What should have been hot sandwich was cold, from the Coleslaw that was on top of the chicken. Fries were just ok. The food is reasonably priced with good portion sizes. I had the Shack Bites with a house salad. The chicken was cooked properly and stayed juicy and the breading was well-seasoned. Veggies in the salad tasted fresh with no wilted greens. We were served quickly and everyone was friendly. This is a cute place! Once you enter, you order and seat yourself. There's a decent amount of seating to choose from. By the way, if you're a student, you can get 10% off. The service was quick, we all got our food within 20 minutes. The food itself was decent, it was worth it for the portion size! I got the chicken and waffles (a classic), you can see how big the portion is. The entree comes with a side and there's a whole list to choose from. I decided to go with the sweet potato fries. I got no spice for the chicken because I'm weak but I should've probably gotten mild to add a little more flavor. The chicken itself was a little tough, not the most tender. The waffles and waffle fries were decent. I would suggest getting a sauce with your meal to dip your chicken and fries in even if you get chicken and waffles! I got the shack sauce I believe, that was a ketchup-mayo kind of sauce. It also came with syrup for your waffles. Hands down the best fried chicken sandwich in College Station! I have been going here at least once a week, and I am never disappointed. I only order one thing: a chicken sandwich (medium, I love spicy food but Texas hot can really push your limits, so choose wisely) and the sandwich comes with a side, which is always dragon fries for me (spicy fries). If you are a student, don't forget to ask for the 10% discount, and definitely get some ranch or their special sauce for dipping. In a dog eat dog city of fried chicken, I believe The Cookshack deserves more recognition. SoFly had closed by my house and I have heard great things about Dave's but I wanted to make sure people weren't ruling this joint out. I was greeted warmly and ordered the 2 tenders Texas Hot with shack sauce, a side kale salad, and a drink (you've gotta try every chicken place's tea, I mean come on). I was probably their 5th customer of the day and my food was incredible. The chicken itself melts in your mouth and doesn't even need sauce. Texas Hot did make my nose run and I am very tolerant of spice so I enjoyed it. The shack sauce was great. The crazy thing is that the kale salad was the best kale salad I've had at ANY fast casual restaurant. What threw me into 5 stars was that the actual chef came from behind the kitchen to bus my table even when I answered a phone call. That's what I call customer service! I wish I got her name. I will be yelling COOKSHACK when people ask me for my opinion on College Station chicken from now on. It is damn good! read more
