Came down for motorcycle ride and friend suggested Proudest Monkey. So away we went in search of the monkey, after driving past it a couple of times, due in part because they have no grab your attention marque or any signage to say HEY we are right here next to the Queen Theater, first hassle. Next hassle was we were not greeted like other folks were. Maybe it was the way we were dressed my friend did have on a TCU Horn Frogs hat, or maybe we just looked unfriendly we had been riding motorcycles all day. Nah, I am betting it was the hat. Anyway the place was kind of small and narrow but nice looking. They could have used a few ceiling fans while a/c was working its aggie off it felt stuffy inside. After being told we could sit anywhere we decided on the bar we figure what better spot to be at for a place known for its beer & taco selections. Greg the bartender was nice and attentive. I started with an Austin Eastcider Blood Orange cider. OMGoodness tapj about a smooth refreshing cider, the kind that will let ya order 3-4 and then next thing you are doing the walk 10 paces toe to heel or hold your foot 6 inches above parallel to the ground for 30 secs walks of shame. But oh they are so good...next I ordered the "License To Krill taco". Grilled shrimp, mango pico jalito cheese, & jalapeno bacon ranch dressing. Although I would like to have seen more shrimp, the taco worked and flavors were spot on. Next ce the Fish taco, tilapia, cabbage, jalito cheese & lime cilantro aiole. While everything looked really good the fish did lack flavor. Everything about it had great potential especially after the good opening by the shrimp. My friend ordered the small order of sweet potato fries "yuppy style" (means olive oil, salt, pepper, parmesan and garlic) they were very good. Went in with higher expectations. The food was good. Service was good. It just wasn't great or anything to write home about. We tried the chicken, shrimp and beef tacos. The chorizo and beef burger with yuppy Idaho fries. The fries were probably the best thing. FYI they have a heavy hand on the pepper! There are definitely better burger and taco spots nearby. I applied for a line cook job at this place and was not given the position. It was a group interview and later that week when I went in friends I noticed the girl that got the job. She was literally combing her hair behind the counter and then not even 10 seconds later was bringing food out to customers. We walked in with our to-go cups and the first thing we hear is the bartender bellowing across the whole bar "No outside drinks!" That's what greeted us. Of course we know we can't have outside soft drinks. We weren't going sit there slurping on them, ordering nothing. We were going to have some beers and toss the drinks. We came in & sat at the bar to grab a bite to eat & watch some football, because the heat during the Texas Reds Wine Festival was a bit too much. What a welcome reprieve. We sat at the bar & had great service. Food & drinks were delivered promptly and everything tasted great. The Yuppie fries were very good. I was adventurous and tried and Ice Cream Martini and a Vodka drink with Jalapeños which was good, with just a little kick. My husband really enjoyed his burger too. Maybe the worst bar in downtown as far as service goes. Wait staff is terrible. They will also come and ask you to leave if you grab a table that someone else was "waiting" on despite the fact that it's a bar and there is NO waiting list. All in all go somewhere else and skip this one. read more

In town just for a few nights, staying at the La Salle. Decided to roll by Proudest Monkey for a beer of two. Let's start there: $3.00 for Lone Star on a Sunday in Bryan Tx? You have to be kidding. I have two and leave. The girlfriend and I decide to walk over and order dinner from there as well, it was late, it was close. We show up at 8pm on the dot. We order two tacos and a burger with fries. She leaves to take a call at the hotel room so I wait. And wait, and wait and wait again. I waited 51 minutes for anything, an excuse, a progress report, food, info, or any kind of update. I got nothing but pissed off. At 8:52pm I asked super cool "man bun" hipster boy for a refund. He says no problem, no reasonable answers, no excuses and no Sorry Brah. Well thx for nothing monkey, you'd never last in a real town. read more

I think the gourmet burgers here are better than Grub's and it's a nice non-chain restaurant in Downtown Bryan. They have a ton of options ranging from beef to turkey as well as vegetarian options. The appetizers are delicious as well, especially the plantains and sweet potato fries. The cost of food is a little on the steeper side though. It gives off a sports bar like vibe but a little more hipster. The customer service is good, the waitress was very nice to us and the food comes out pretty quickly as well. Food was ok to heavenly (my wife chose the fish tacos and I tried pulled pork (good but a bit saltier than expected) and portobellos mushroom (heavenly). Alcoholic drinks? we can't judge because we had just come to this place from the local winery and decided to drink sodas (we're a bit past our college days...). Regarding those sodas: mine had weak syrup and my wife's was almost pure syrup. About service: the one person to serve a full bar and full tables was the bartender. She was professional, but could not keep up. After half an hour, another employee showed up and things started moving. Bad planning on management's part. Prices? Cheap. read more

I've been meaning to stop at Proudest Monkey since hearing it opened several months ago. I love Moneys and while the logo is pretty funky, the decor and service is pure class. I really like places that use wood floors, walls, and ceilings and believe it adds a classy ambiance when done right. (See my review on Brauhaus in Bryan for another wood related review). I stopped in for lunch with a friend of mine and we both agreed the bar was well lit and didn't overwhelm with televisions. Instead of having TVs plastered everywhere like Sully's for example, the Proudest monkey settles for a large projector and several smaller TVs at some of the tables. This is nice because we were able to request that a soccer game be shown on our TV specifically. The food here is a mixture of American and Tex-Mex with a twist. We split the ground beef and Chorizo burger with bacon, avocado, and a fried egg, as well as a grilled pork and grilled fish taco. All the food was fresh and tasty. The burger extras really made it taste unique, and while it has nothing on Stover Bros Cafe or Flip and Peel, it was still quite tasty. The service relies on you walking in and being noticed by a waiter but we were spotted immediately and told we could sit wherever we wanted. The small size of the bar made seating easy. It's cozy but doesn't feel overly crowded. Our server recommended what we ordered and it was definitely a good decision. He also kept our drinks filled throughout the order, which is definitely a good thing to do when you're at a bar. I can't say anything for the dinner or late night scene but for lunch the Proudest Monkey was spot on. read more

My friend and I decided to grab a drink downtown Monday night and I was curious about the Proudest Monkey after walking through it a few First Friday's ago. I had trouble finding it even after mapping it on my phone and was nearly convinced that it had closed when I stumbled across it again. (Their sign is pretty inconspicuous.) The dimly lit interior is a mixture of classy and casual, with rich wood and exposed brick. Normally the presence of so many televisions would ruin any ambiance, but the one in the bathroom mirror took it to a level of Warhol-like absurdity which somehow redeemed it. The bartender and our waitress were friendly and attentive. Their mixology menu was right up my alley: especially The Big Dill, which is a perfectly proportioned pickle juice martini. The ranch hand tacos and sweet potato fries yuppy-style were about as delicious as bar food gets (it can get pretty delicious). This probably would have been a 5-star review if the fish tacos weren't served on corn tortillas that were either stale or improperly crisped... and if I hadn't had to search for the bar in the freezing cold. I'll definitely be back to try a burger--hopefully one involving Monkey Sauce! read more

Ok, so while I was driving down the road Facebook buzzed on my phone and, while I was stopped at red light, of course, I saw an article about this new bar opening in downtown Bryan on my news feed. My stomach was rumbling because it was about lunch time and I noticed that today was the Grand Opening at Proudest Monkey. It mentioned that opening was at 11 a.m. and that it had a kitchen: i was sold. When I walked in the door I was immediately intrigued with the spectacular blend between traditional and contemporary. Initially, I noticed the old, and assumably original, brick walls. Then I was struck with all the contemporary bar decor which includes nice dark wood trim with rustic metal inserts, tables with pub chairs, TV's at all side tables, an impressive bar which is fully stocked, and TV's behind the mirrors in the bathrooms. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I really loved the environment that Aaron and Stephanie Curs have created. Now that I've bored you to death, I guess I should talk about the food since that was the reason I was there. There is a simple lunch menu that has surprisingly reasonable prices. I opted for the pulled pork tacos and the yuppy fries (AMAZING!). My wife had a single burger and the dirty fries. The food was delicious and I am guessing that I might have to regular this place. Granted, I only come to B/CS to play shows with my band. But, I fell in love with this place SO MUCH that I went twice in 24 hours. This is now my GO-TO stop when in B/CS. First of all, let's talk about a decent beer selection: this is not your typical college bar selection. Secondly, THE BURGERS. As a most-loving burger consumer, I look for the best anywhere/everywhere I go. I love this place based on topping selection alone. Whom else gives you a list of 20 or so toppings and isn't Fudds? (Plus, here they bring it to you, which doesn't hurt one bit). The biggest surprises are the peculiars: sugar fries (I think they call them dirty fries?) and the monkey sauce. GET BOTH, I PROMISE. I would never steer another burger lover wrong. I also love that the bread isn't the focus on the burger. Don't overlook the chorizo burger! Eat it for breakfast with a fried egg on top! Overall, I wish there was another one closer to me. Also, for the record, they ARE named after the DMB song. AND THAT RULES as much as this place does. read more

This place is good in theory but too inconsistent to garner more than three stars. Their tortillas suck and fall apart. I tried the Bronx. If you're thinking of ordering it, skip it. Their signature martini, El Pepino, is inconsistent. I ordered it twice. The first time I ordered it it was delicious. The second time it was below average, and it was not full to the rim as the Bronx my friend ordered. I asked the waitress why the more expensive martini had less than less expensive one, and she said that's just the way it is. This last visit there was a stench as soon as we walked in. The Good: - Very friendly, attentive, helpful servers and bartenders. Really excellent service! - The food really is good. Like, not just, "Oh, it's good for a bar..." They legitimately have some good stuff here. Try the fried yucca and plantains! Also, their corn tortillas were good, and didn't appear to be store-bought...? Plus, the hubs loved the mushroom burger, and he's not even a vegetarian, so you know it's a good non-meat burger when it wins over a meat-lover :). - Lots of local, Texas beers, plus some interesting cocktails that sounded delicious, but I was more in a beer-drinking mood :). - Cool décor. They did a great job renovating the inside of this place, and it feels unique and intimate, without being stuffy. The Not-Terrible, But Not-Great: - I can't tell if I was just more hungry than I realized, but for some reason, the portions just seemed small? After the fried plantains and yucca, then two tacos, I was still pretty hungry. - Our awesomely attentive server caught that my tacos were on flour tortillas instead of corn (like I requested) before he even brought out my tacos, apologized for the mixup, and said that the cook was going to fix it and he'd bring it right out. The only problem was, he seemed to have forgotten to check on them for quite some time, so when they came out like 10 minutes later, they were totally cold, which tells me they were ready quite a while before then. The tacos seemed like they were pretty good, but honestly, they would probably be more memorable if they had even been a little warm. I noticed a sign on the front saying they were looking for more kitchen staff, including cooks, AND it was a busy night, so I'm certainly not going to write them off for this, but I'll earmark them as another restaurant for us to try again maybe a little later :). I don't know where to begin. The food was good but it may have been only for the fact that I was starving and would have eaten anything put in front of me. We have been a few times and this time I was prompted to write a review. They're slow. Do NOT come in if you only have a short time for lunch or even dinner. Today in particular, it took over an hour for 5 tacos to come out from the kitchen. 3 people ordered and they came on only two plates. We also ordered yuppy fries and dirty sweet potato fries.. We received two orders of dirty regular fries. We opted for a no fix because we didn't want to wait for it. Also saw a few couples leave in frustration from waiting. As for the food, I like it here. Friend had the fish tacos and said they were bland while I had the beef which were fabulous (but then again I was about to pass out from starvation at 9pm). We came into town for my husbands job and wanted something different. It was an all over great experience. The downtown area was closed for the monthly market so we had to park and walk. We found the restaurant and sat at the bar. The employees were so nice answering any questions we had. The food was amazing and the drinks she suggested were equally amazing.
