Could not taste the mango pico. The chorizo patty was too salty, although I guess it balanced a bit with the fried egg. What a fabulous menu and atmosphere! After the game, we searched for a restaurant by the Bryan Shuttle Stop. This is 2 blocks from the stop off, right next door to the Queen Theater. The items were eclectic and so delicious! I had the Pablo Pescado with the Idaho Fries (yuppy...omg, so good) and my husband had the El Jefe burger with Yucca and Plaintains. Everything was fabulous! Don't go here at any busy time, because you will just wait around for another group who shows up after you to take a free table. No waitlist. Perhaps we went there on the day they had an actual monkey doing the cooking... just not one of the proud ones. For a town with little to offer in the way of interesting/eclectic/palatable cuisine (of the non-hamburger-and-fries variety), I can see why many people in the area feel like they should like/support it. A starving human will think water crackers taste like a T-bone steak if they are hungry enough, and they serve a pretty mean cracker here (BCS is a food desert and this place is just another mirage). So here we go... several of the fried plantain and yucca chunks were still frozen and stuck together, and the order of just a few tacos took over an hour to exit the kitchen after ordering. I was, however, provided with the most tea I have ever drank at a restaurant; granted, this was due in large part to the friendly wait staff/bartenders who were also clearly wishing the kitchen would come back from their "lunch break" (that being said, the wait staff were actually very considerate of this and they did do a good job keeping us happy in light of apparently not having anyone in the kitchen over lunch). Once on the table the kitchen upheld its fine reputation. After this hour of waiting we were served several "tacos" that could not have taken more than 3 min to prepare (read: take cheap tortilla from sams club, open carl budding meat package, place iceberg lettuce and smattering of other salad veggies, then drizzle with frenches mustard for a 'classy' appearance). But seriously, the food was a joke, and for ~$4/taco you can do much, much, much better. It makes me cautious about the drinks, since the food is supposed to be better than the cocktails. But I digress... The cubano taco was a joke (simply putting some sliced sandwich pickles and ham on a tortilla does not make it 'cubano', and the pulled pork (what few strands I could find amidst the rest of the mess on the tortilla) was... well, come to think of it, I cannot say what it tasted like - maybe cabbage and mayo? At least it has fresh jalapenos. There were a few other tacos on the table but none were finished (partially due to lack of time, but mostly due to lack of flavor or any discernible flavor that we were comfortable taking a second bite of). But not all is lost. The inside is nice (sandblasted brick, nice bar, etc.), and the overall concept is good if you are not hungry or thirsty. If it is still around in a year I will try it again, if not I will be happy that they renovated the space and hope that the next group to move in does a better job running the joint. read more

After hearing some buzz about this new establishment in downtown Bryan, I thought I would check it out Saturday afternoon (6/16/12) while I was in the area from out of state. Unfortunately, I never got to try the food or even a beverage as the service I experienced upon walking in was atrocious from the start. I stood at the (mostly) empty bar for a few minutes waiting for the waitress to look up from her phone. When she finally did, she made eye contact with me, but quickly looked away and proceeded to play with her phone. Another few minutes passed before a small group of people walked in and I was immediately taken aback when I watched the waitress jump to wait on them. The only notable difference between this small group of people and myself was that I have a darker skin pigmentation. After she took their orders, she finally turned to me to ask if I needed anything. Giving her a quizzical look and sarcastically thinking to myself "No, I'm just standing at the bar to watch you wait on other people while I sip on my cold glass of nothing", I asked if she had a beer menu. She said she didn't know and asked a gentleman with a brown beard if there were any available. He said no and pointed towards the ceiling to a display of beer bottles. I explained to the waitress that I could not see the display clearly enough to read the bottle labels due to my vision impairments and the dark lighting of the bar. Having no response, she looked at me moronically with her mouth agape and eyes wide open. I decided I had no choice but to leave in search of a more integrating and accomplished establishment. Bottom line: If you are of a lighter skin tone with minimal to no vision impairments, you may possibly have a good experience with Proudest Monkey; however, unless you fit the two aforementioned categories, you may want to consider a more refined establishment offered in the beautiful downtown Bryan area, such as The Village or Revolutions. read more

We really wanted to like this place... My boyfriend and I came here a little before 7 on a Friday night, looking for somewhere to go in Bryan to avoid the back to school rush at CS restaurants. The reviews on Yelp looked favorable, but don't let them deceive you! We walked into the restaurant and were just..confused. Most tables were full but there were no directions as to whether you seat yourself or what the deal is. Eventually someone saw we were lost and pointed us to an obscure table basically outside the bathrooms. Fortunately, it's a nice place that has been completely redone so things could have been worse. On the one plus side, we were immediately greeted after that by a young and friendly server who was eager to take our order. The menu looked very promising- a nice blend of delicious sounding tacos or customizable burgers (with a chicken and mushroom option for the non-red meat lovers too, which is always a plus!) After a long internal debate, I settled for a ground chicken burger with avocado while my boyfriend had a fish taco and a shrimp taco, and we split a small side of sweet potato fries. -Tacos: Pathetically small. My boyfriend said they were all in all pretty good, but was still hungry afterwards. His words when he finished: "So, where do you wanna get dessert after this?" For $4 each, you would expect a lot more food. You're better off at Fuego down the road. -Burger: also pretty small, but that could be overlooked as long as it wasn't so dry. I had to ask for ketchup just to choke it down. Definitely not worth the $6, plus extra for the most miniscule amount of avocado. It should also be noted that toppings cost 25 cents each, which is fine, but for ketchup and mustard, really?? -Fries: only redeeming quality of the place! They were the perfect texture, but could really lose the overly salt/pepper combo that tends to overwhelm them. Sorry, but we will not be back. read more

My wife, my 18 month daughter, and I went to The Proudest Monkey for lunch not knowing what to expect. We were immediately greeted by the friendly owner and staff. They informed us that they did not have high chairs for my daughter. I didn't really expect them to being that they are primarily a bar. As soon as we ordered, the owner brought out a plate of sweet potatoe fries on the house. If that wasn't enough he reappeared 5-10 minutes later with a high chair still in plastic. He went out and bought a high chair! I couldn't believe the service. The food was also fantastic, which was just the icing on the cake. They already won me over with the outstanding customer service, but the food was just as good. I had the chorizo burger and yuppy fries, I've never had anything like them before. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 5 times, I'm an idiot for still trying. Although the pub food served here is pretty good, definitely above average, the service is terrible. Take today for instance, I put an order to go in and was told 15 minutes. Upon walking up to the register at the bar and waiting for acknowledgement, I was greeted with, "There are people sitting there (rudely)," by the bartender. I let her know I didn't intend to sit down. She eventually got my order after a 5 min wait (the people sitting at the bar never appeared, so I'm guessing it was her plate at the bar). I noticed that my side of sauce wasn't included on the ticket. Another member of the bar staff graciously got me some sauce and I left. This is a great local bar - brand new with an old feel. The building is as old as downtown Bryan and many of the original features were preserved. The original exposed brick has been left in place and lit and shelves and bar rails built around it in a classy and interesting way. Also the hand stamped tin ceiling tiles, though not in good enough shape to have been preserved, has been reworked into a beautiful bar top and framed and hung on the wall in an impressively unique and inventive way. Owners invested not just in their bar but in their neighborhood as well when they opened Proudest Monkey. A full bar with a great selection of bottled beers and a kitchen serving fresh spins on burgers and tacos with promises of more to come. If you haven't been here yet what are you waiting for? Glad I found this place! I am new to town and this is one of my first local non-chain bar/restaurants. It did not disappoint. The service was fantastic, despite a pretty packed night. I got a couple of drinks and decided to order some food. (I believe they have a happy hour with some drink specials). I love me a good burger and wanted to switch it up from the traditional so I went with the El Jefe, along with the fried yucca root and plantains. I can tell that they have a well trained chef with an outstanding palette from the yucca root and plantain combination alone, which was very well seasoned (Definitely a South America flavor that stood out). The best elements of the El Jefe (in my humble opinion), include the chuck/chorizo patty, the mango pico, and the fried egg. Those flavor and texture combinations are complex and compliment each other well. Will be back! read more

This place is a nice hole in the wall in old downtown Bryan. It feels like it is trendy on the inside, with solid service and welcoming decor. There are TV's in the eating area and there is also a bar. There aren't any draft drinks available, but they have a decent selection of bottles. The tacos and fries are also very good. NOTORIETY: Chorizo burger & pulled pork taco FOOD: (Double) Chorizo burger ($7.50 before tax): At 1st, I wasn't impressed. I didn't taste what made it chorizo. But as you continue, the flavors of the chorizo start to explode in your mouth, adding a nice twist to your ordinary burger. Definitely worth a try. (Large) Yuppy fries ($3.25 before tax): These were skinny fries, topped w/ olive oil & garlic. The skinniness allowed for more oil to be absorbed, but it was very slightly salty. Nevertheless, it was a tasty side. OVERALL: Great pub atmosphere w/ solid, yet unique food. I def. see myself coming back to try the dirty fries, but not the taco (as my buddy got it & was underwhelmed by the pulled pork flavor). RECOMMENDATION: Chorizo burger TIP: 1. The monkey sauce is similar to the dipping sauce that you get at one of the chicken fingers places in B/CS (according to the server). 2. Sad to say we will no longer be frequenting the Monkey. We went for an early Veterans Day dinner, and were upset when leaving. We had two amazing burgers and some beverages, and after paying our tab we stayed to chat finish our drinks. 20 mins later as we were getting up to leave the waitress runs up with another tab telling us she forgot to charge us for a couple drinks....this to me was not good customer service. If you make a mistake like that, plus it was $6, you let the manager know and take care of it....not chase people out the door telling them they need to pay for something you forgot to include 20 minutes ago! Proudest Monkey is one of my favorite lunch spots in Downtown Bryan. I would never say that I crave their food, but I do have great appreciation for their tacos and fries. I have been here somewhere between 5-10 times and have never left unsatisfied. However, my wife and I have begun our search for the best burger in Bryan/College Station and Proudest Monkey was our choice for Week Two of this culinary adventure. I foresee their burger, the Willie Norris, to be in the bottom half of our list of top burgers. Their fries on the other hand may be in the top 3 around town. Also, the atmosphere is hip, but if you come when it's busy, expect a good wait as the building is very narrow with limited seating. If you do choose to come to Proud Monkey, I recommend ordering a taco or two with fries. read more
