This is my neighborhood joint. I really like the barbacoa but the fajita is good too. My favorite order is the Gordita. Least fav is the quesadilla because the cheese tastes too processed. The tortas look 10/10. It has a drive thru and small courtyard to eat in with the local feral cats and sometimes a dog. Dogs are welcome on the patio. It's helpful if you speak Spanish. read more

Partner and I were getting food from here before we turned in for the night, about an hour ago. We ordered a quesadilla and a taco. We got home about 20 minutes later and opened our food only to find a huge greasy leak coming from the bag, which also stained my partners clothes. We looked through the bag to find the leak was coming from something we hadn't ordered: a bunch of grilled onions wrapped in foil. No taco. Our quesadilla was intact but we looked in the bag and found no taco. We thought "is this a joke?" The person who gave us our food even repeated our order as he handed the bag. Now my partner is very upset since she was unable to eat and got unnecessary grease stains over her clothes. I would ask for a refund, but we paid in cash. So, when my friend suggested this place, I thought he was joking. There isn't anything nearby - no houses, no other companies etc. So, it really looks like a sketchy neighborhood more than a restaurant. However, I promise you won't be sorry that you came here. The tacos are simply the best I have ever had and everything tastes as if it's homemade. So, of the few times I have been here, there is a little old grandmother who runs the entire show. She takes orders, cooks the food, and serves, all by herself. The only downside is that she isn't fluent in English. She does speak enough for you to communicate with you to figure out what to order. But, seriously don't let that discourage you. The food is totally worth the effort of occasionally not knowing what you're going to get. They have some benches on the side that make me feel like I have a picnic. Definitely give this place a chance. It also helps quite a bit if you have a Spanish speaking friend you can get to come with you :) read more

I was introduced to Tio's one frigid winter night after an evening of ice skating. We were starving, and my brother had the genius idea of nice warm tacos al Tio's. Only thing is, Tio's was strategically placed near a firing wall (how would YOU explain a solitary stone wall with no signs of ever having its three supporting sisters?) in the bowels of downtown Bryan, near the intersection of warring gang territories (we think). Downtown Bryan at night was in complete and utter darkness, except for a blinding white cross and the green and white lights of Tio's down the road. We're also fairly certain one lone man attempted to jump at our moving car driving down Bryan Ave. We made it there. We're surrounded by hydraulic low riders, trimmed with surname-emblazoned trunk mirrors and underglow car lights in the most attractive hues, parked right next to the tiny cabin where the brave men & women of Tio's work tirelessly to offer up the best barbacoa this side of Heaven. I've become somewhat of a connoisseur of this shredded divinity, and Tio's was so tender you didn't even have to chew - it would melt the instant you tasted its goodness. Their fajita, pastor, pork and bottled coke added to our marvel: how a good taco was barricaded in the depths of no man's land for so long? We had jeopardized our well being to taste the real thing, and began to spread the word on this deceptively sub-par spot. Tio's is open till about 2am, but the firing wall has since been torn down to make room for a flea market, and the low riders have made way for the families wanting to get their horchata fix at 1:30 in the morning. Still creepy as hell in Bryan's pitch black sector but after all it's Tio's. They're worth the risk. read more

Great food! - 5 stars. The ambiance is non-existent, but you don't expect any from such a place. Or, you cal that the ambiance. The place serves mostly tacos and enchiladas (beef, lengua [beef tongue], chicken, barbacoa, something else, but no carnitas). They have typical Mexican drinks, including horchata (but with just a bit too much of cinnamon - to my taste, - but I don't like cinnamon). I tried and liked tacos and enchiladas. They have beef tongue for the meet, - I love that! And it is grilled just right. It takes some time (as everything is made to order, and there is only one lady who does it. But it is worth the wait. They take cash only. There is no covered seating, so even though it is not hot yet, the last two times, I ordered through the drive-through window. Quesadillas are huge. They put avocado in them (great!). Also, they include jalapenos, so, if you don't want them, ask to exclude. The sauces are very hot, so, I don't care for those (but I don't care much for sauces in many cases). The lady is friendly, but speaks very limited English. I don't speak Spanish at all, but I had not problems getting what I needed and finding out what they serve (they have no menus). I have no problem, but I can see how it can take some people out of their comfort zone. So, the final score is 4.5 stars. read more

I'll start by saying that I don't know really any spanish. However, I knew just enough to get by placing an order. If you're worried about this bring along a Spanish Best tacos I've ever had. We got two asada, and to pastor. You get a little plate with onion, cilantro, avocado, cheese, and lime for them. The asada was so tastey, and she does not skimp you on the meat. The pastor was spicey and delicious. These tacos are so full of meat that two was plenty where I normally need four. I would eat these tacos every day if it were closer to home. Next was my husbands torta which was the biggest one I've ever seen. No where we have ordered torta has been so full of meat as it was here. I didn't taste it but he said it's the best he has had. Plenty of avocado and jalapeno on it. We also got those great Mexico bottles of coke. Be honest, they are just better than any 20 oz from a corner store. I had assumed that this place was open late only on the weekends. That is until I called them tonight. They are open 'til 2 AM during the week, not just Saturday. That may explain why Greg D. kept finding them closed in the late morning. I ended up making other stops, since I noticed other places open on the way. I hit a La Mexicana, a hot dog joint, and then Taqueria El Tio. I couldn't help myself: I got myself a quesadilla for an early lunch tomorrow, since the last one I had was so good even the next morning! The Torta al Pastor is a delicious sandwich! It's $5.50 and worth every penny. Flavorful pork meat in a soft grilled bun with lettuce, tomatoes , avocado and jalepenos. The lady doesn't speak English so be sure to know what you want-she won't be able to give you any suggestions . Their spicy green sauce is delicious and she packs the Togo order very neatly with napkins and salsa. Tucked amid grim warehouses and housed in an old compressor business, Taqueria El Tio serves up some of the most righteous, authentic Mexican food I've tasted since leaving the frontera of southern Arizona,where it was a quick trip across the border for dinner. My favorite is the Tostada Siberia: fresh avocado, crema, lettuce, cheese, and spicy chicken. (I feel guilty falling off the vegetarian wagon, but this concoction alone was worth it.) Taqueria El Tio offers a large variety of Jarrito's soda, the perfect complement. Please tip the cook: it seems the cooks work very long hours. I have seen the same cook there at 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Outdoor seating would be nice. A working knowledge of ordering food in Spanish is helpful. If you cannot speak enough Spanish, just point at the large pictorial menu. And try the Jarrito's beverages. read more

The first time the boy and I drove to Taqueria El Tio, it was midnight and I couldn't get him to get out of his F150 to actually eat at this place because he was convinced there were gang members hiding in the shadows of the desolate street El Tio stands on. Tonight, I got him to go again. And this time, we actually got to the counter to order. I'm so glad I dragged him out there because they serve the most delicious tacos I've ever had. Ever. To illustrate this point, I'm the kind of girl who won't eat a taco unless a) it's crispy b) has lettuce c) it's slathered with the fix'ins - sour cream, cheese, salsa... you get the idea. What I got here was a chicken taco with cilantro in a soft corn tortilla. And boy, it was DELICIOUS! I was in awe. So here's what we got: 2 chicken tacos, 3 steak tacos, a *large* glass bottle of real Mexican Coke, and a melon fresca (the boy failed to translate for me that "melon" meant neither canteloupe or honeydew but rather grapefruit, yuck). Oh, and you get as many servings of nachos as you want! Ignore the sketchy location and enjoy great, authentic food! GO! read more

There are cats everywhere and they'll sometimes attempt to sit on your seat with you. It makes the experience so much more interactive. It's not as "sketchy" of a neighborhood as much as it is working class, but if you're put off by that then you should go to HEB and buy those frozen burritos. They'll be much more your speed.
