We tried Jose's Fine Mexican Food after hearing a lot of good things, so it honestly hurts to write this review. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the hype. The only real saving grace of the meal was the cheese dip, salsa, and chips. Those were solid and probably the best part of the visit. Everything else went downhill from there. The service was lackluster and not attentive, which should've been our first red flag. Another warning sign was how fast the food came out -- about six minutes after we ordered, which made it pretty clear things were just being reheated. I ordered the shrimp enchiladas, but they were basically plain cheese enchiladas with a few tiny shrimp thrown in. Very underwhelming and lacking flavor. The margarita I ordered was also disappointing -- it tasted like artificial sweetener with no natural flavor, so I ended up sending it back and just getting a beer instead. My wife ordered the Poncho's nachos, which came out cold with a neon orange cheese that looked and tasted pretty processed. Definitely not appetizing. Overall, we left pretty disappointed. There are much better Tex-Mex spots in the BCS area. I hate to say it because I've always heard great things about this place, but it feels like it may have lost its prime. Walking in it looked nice and was much bigger than it appears outside. It did have an odd smell though, almost like grease. The chips and salsa were meh but I loved the queso! This was our first visit so we asked our waitress first any suggestions. She said the enchiladas or the chicken fried steak. The nice gentleman sitting near us suggested the burrito. We opted for that and got fajita beef topped with half queso and half chili sauce. It was delicious! I'm not sure I'll ever get anything else when we come back...and yes, we will be back! Traditional Tex-Mex here Yelp friends. Chose to check them out on a recent visit to the area. Ordered togo during the pandemic. Shrimp enchiladas and chalupas compuestas and a couple of ice teas. Order came with complimentary chips and salsa. Chips were nice paired with the tangy red. A hint of vinegar and chili powder best describes the flavor. Curbside was courteous, and efficient. We took our vittles back to our hotel. The enchiladas didn't exactly live up to the menu description. The creamy tomato sauce the shrimp were supposed to be tossed in was non existent. The queso being the other sauce was the only real sauce flavor. I'd personally prefer more tomato than cheese. Jose's chalupas proved a classic old school example. Ample beans, lettuce, and what I call government cheese. Diced tomatoes would have been nice but were not offered. Nicely prepared smooth and creamy guacamole topped off the dish. I can't believe I've never reviewed Jose's. This is our "family" restaurant, meaning when we need to celebrate something, or need comfort, this is where we go. We used to be twice weekly regulars at Zarape (same owners, downtown, closed now almost 20 years probably), which was basically the same, & my parents used to go when my mom was pregnant with me. So essentially I've been eating their food since before I was born. They have my favorite salsa in town (it's fresh, not roasted, really thin and tangy, some days it's spicier than others). I love that you can get a half order of quesadillas if you're not that hungry. If I'm really hungry, I get the Mexican Dinner with cheese enchiladas (the cheese enchiladas are probably everyone's favorite). The guac is really blended, absolutely not a chunky, tableside guac with tons of ingredients (but it's not advertised like that anyways). I like to dip my chip into guac and then salsa. Take my expert advice. Homey, comforting ambiance. They're renovating and it's really nice and modern now (although part of me will miss the original set up). This is a real local gem. Very prompt and kind service! When we were there, it was not very crowded, so I can't offer too much about how it is when it is crowded. I think the food for price ratio here is one of the best I've seen in college station. Not only quantity but quality are great, for prices much lower than other places (Juanita's). Went to joses for some chicken enchiladas. I don't remember the food being this bad,, being consistent is the key. The shredded chicken in the enchiladas were so dry it was almost inedible. The shrimp enchilada a la carte was even worse the shrimp that they use appears to be the shrimp people use in their salads. Much like imitation crab I'm not sure if the shrimp was actually shrimp. I also specifically asked for refried beans and rice and I received nothing. I don't understand how restaurants are so eager to take your money and your tips and serve you food that is embarrassing. In the 1980s, Jose's was the hot bananas of Mexican food in College Station. You had to drive out to the country side towards Huntsville to eat there ... and the food totally justified the trip. It was my first experience with authentic Tex-Mex and I loved the place. But BCS residents who had lived here all their life loved the place too - and they loved it because the food was good. Flash forward thirty years. Add a move to Texas Ave in Bryan. Add the arrival on the scene of lots and lots of other Mexican restaurants . Some are real-deal Mexican family places; others are chain places with decent recipes and not so terrible food. How has Jose's stood up to thirty years of change, relocation and added competition? I say the champ is still standing and is still a major player. What Jose's does well they do really really well. What they never did well years ago is still problematic. But the positives definitely outweigh the negatives making this a great first-generation Tex-Mex place to keep coming back to. What are the stars of the show? a) ONE OF THE BEST SALSAS YOU CAN GET ANYWHERE IN TEXAS. ARGUABLY THE ONE BEST SALSA YOU CAN GET ANYWHERE IN TEXAS. I eat chips and salsa nearly every day and I have eaten in a lot of Mexican restaurants in Texas. Their home salsa is a red jalapeno sauce. It is medium mild and has a predominant taste of pepper rather than tomato or hotness. It is absolutely savory and reminds you that chilies are peppers and peppers taste good. It is more interesting than any tomato or tomatillo dominant salsa I know. Massive thumbs up. b) Their chips are lightweight medium, very golden and quite lovely. Other places make similar chips that are as good, but these are quite fine. c) Great tortillas. These do not have the "floral aura" that some Mexican restaurants give their tortillas - but for a non-floral, they have great texture and taste. Nice and thin, good corn flavor. d) Fine refried beans. They are not shy about generous use of pork fat here ... and frankly pork fat was made to be put in beans like this. What's not so great? First generation Tex-Mex places often intentionally cooked their rice to make each grain separate by making the cooked rice itself very dry. The rice does not clump together nicely the way some Asian rice does. And frankly, the super-dry approach makes it hard to swallow, not that tasty and not fun to eat. This is totally authentic and how a lot of great grandmothers made it ... but I have to go with the Japanese great grandmothers in the great international rice cooking debate. Carne Guisada - like Carne Guisada in many places - is not a thrill. I am of Jewish ethnicity. The synagogue ladies of my youth cooked lots and lots of pot roast and briskets - Jose's carne guisada perfectly captures the boring tedious pot roasts that I had to put up with in my youth. (Jose's has a redder sauce). But never mind my whining about pot roast. A lot of what Jose's serves is classic stuff. Their salsa is food for the gods. Eat the beans, tolerate the rice, and let salsa tortillas and beans take you to the happy planet. . read more

We were shocked at how poor this food was. Guacamole was blended to a smooth consistency and had almost no avocado flavor. Cheese enchiladas were rolled with cheese still unmelted and the tomatillo sauce was again so watery and blended, it looked more like a glaze than a sauce. Giving them 3 stars because my daughters love this place. I have no complaints but the food was just average. Wanted to order fajitas but they don't come to the table on a sizzling skillet, so I opted for the 3 Green Chicken enchiladas that was supposed to be made with green tomatoes but the sauce was a dark green instead of the usual lighter, brighter green and had way to much poblano peppers. My son had the fajitas and said they were overcooked and kinda tough. We were a large party and the service was great. The entire staff was friendly and pleasant. The food has been well-made, and they always throw in some chips and salsa as well. If you do order take-out, I highly suggest calling ahead to order. (Ask for a menu to take home first.) Because of my impression, this past weekend, I brought my fiancé to show him another good Mexican restaurant option in town. This was also the first time I actually ate in the restaurant. Service was horrible! It took five minutes to simply get water, then another fifteen to order. When I requested a box for my leftovers, it took so long that my fiancé and I decided to bring the plate to the cashier. While we were waiting for her, another party waiting to be seated decided to leave because they had been waiting so long. This should not happen, especially when the place is not even half full.
