Yum! So much food, and all of it was good. Its not often my bunch leaves food, but even we couldn't eat it all. Only food complaint was that the fried potatoes had onions in them, and A LOT of onion. The place was very busy, even at 6 am. Very clean restaurant and everyone was very friendly. Price wasn't horrible, about $10 per person-good price for the massive amount of food you got but not a good price if your not that hungry (unless you take home the leftovers lol). This was my first visit to this restaurant. My husband and I accidentally came across it while out shopping. We decided to go in and check it out because there were a lot of cars outside. This place is like a cafe style restaurant. The food is home cooked and was excellent. The service was great too. We will definitely go back as it is only about 15 minutes from home. I used to eat at Chubbys before it changed ownership. Chubbys food quality declined so I was in search of a replacement. Poor Richards is that replacement. The food is delicious at a very affordable price. On weekends and Holidays the wait line is out the door. Eventhough they are busy the wait is nevery very long. They are very efficient and have a ton of tables. I recomend the home fries. read more

Poor Richard's Cafe is a great place for breakfast. Bring your appetite to Poor Richard's, and you will be satisfied. The gingerbread pancakes are stacked high and delicious. They had a right blend of ginger, cinnamon, etc. The pancakes were fluffy and oh so good. I didn't put butter on the pancakes because they were so good. I ordered the stewed cinnamon apples to go on top of my pancakes because I do not like syrup. I also ordered the scrambled eggs (without cheese) and bacon. The eggs were scrambled just right, and the bacon (OMG the bacon), the four slices of long bacon were cooked to perfection, not too greasy, enough bacon meat, and not burnt. You have to try the bacon. I never had such delicious bacon. I made the mistake of ordering a small glass of apple juice, which is enough for a 5 year old. I will order a large glass of apple juice on my next visit, and of course, I will order the pancakes, bacon, and eggs again! The price of the food is very affordable. Breakfast for two costs less than $25.00. Service was excellent. read more

Maybe we went on a bad day but the food wasn't as good as it used to be. My husband had eggs Benedict and felt like is hollandaise sauce was burned. Maybe it was too late in the day to order that. This place is hidden gem. I decided to try it in a spur of the moment decision years ago, and started coming every Sunday. It's delicious and tastes homemade. There's a wide variety of choices from pancakes and omelettes to chicken fried steak. The staff is all very friendly and there's a relaxed homey feeling to the whole place. I'm glad to hear the place has a new owner and will continue on without RB. I'm especially happy to hear it's a former staff member who bought it. However, I strongly suggest changing the name of the restaurant. As long as "Richard" is in the name, there will always be a dark cloud hanging over the place. read more

Great place for home cooked breakfast in the North Dallas Area! I put the 10-15 minute wait to be seated to a test and they came out just slightly longer than that at 21 minutes. But the food comes out SO fast that it doesn't matter how long you wait! Food was very very good, not necessarily the best I've ever had but for a hole in the wall and low price it was absolutely FANTASTIC. It really did taste excellent, I had the Hearty Breakfast - 3 eggs (scrambled with cheese), 3 pancakes, and bacon. All of it was super tasty, the pancakes were actually some of the best I've had anywhere. My friend had the Southern Breakfast - 2 eggs (scrambled with cheese), 3 biscuits, large gravy, and home fries. It was too much for her so I helped her with the biscuits and gravy and they were fantastic. Unique biscuits, looked like they were made from scratch and oh so fluffy. Very good. Again, not the absolute best I've ever had so it's not a 5 star joint but still extremely good and for the price it's even better! read more

Worst service ever. We've been here several times in the past year and the service has gotten worse. Been here 20 minutes now and still haven't seen our waitress. My husband even spoke to the manager. If you want a good breakfast and proper service go to The Original Pancake House. read more

My friend and I showed up here around 11am on a Saturday, and the line looked really long, but it moved quickly and we sat down in about 15 minutes. If there's anything you should definitely get, it is the potatoes! They are very well-seasoned and it's hard to stop eating them. I also really liked their grapefruit juice. The eggs and pancakes were standard, nothing special. On appearance it seemed like a very Southern homey diner, so I was hoping to get corned beef hash, but they didn't have it on the menu which was very disappointing. Also, when I asked for real butter for my toast, the waitress claimed they didn't have it and brought me more of the little margarine packet things. I was like what?? In addition, service was pretty slow and the waitress hardly came back to see if we needed anything. I did take my husband home the pulled pork omelette, and he loved it. All in all, I wasn't wowed by this place, but it's very affordable and has plenty of options on the menu. So if you're looking for some standard breakfast food, it's not a bad choice. read more

We live in League City, TX and we were visiting my folks for Daddy's 90th birthday this past weekend. We were there on Sunday morning. The food and the service was very good! I came here last weekend for the first time, with my husband. He works up the street from PR and he's a regular here. He LOVES this place. I didn't know that you could not bring outside drinks in. I am a huge coffee lover and I didn't know what my coffee options might be for PR, so I brought my own. I'm glad I did bring it, they only served plain coffee. My husband never had breakfast here so he didn't know either. I was told by my waitress, that I'm not supposed to have outside drinks in here, and that they charge for that. I told her, I had no idea, it's my first time here. She could've said it a little nicer. I had no idea the owner was the guy right next to me talking with other customers, because he never came to my table, But he came to the table next to me twice. I figured it out then. So, another waitress came up to with a styrofoam cup and said, that owner keeps looking at my cup and she didn't want him to charge me for my coffee. I don't necessarily expect an owner to come and chat with me, but it seems odd and impersonal to chat with the table next to me knowing that he was noticing my coffee (and odd that the coffee was that kind of big deal). I had the pecan waffles and I was disappointed with them as well. They were very dry. I tried to pick a piece up with my fork and it just fell apart. read more

We went for breakfast on Father's Day, so of course it was super crowded. We found this place on yelp, and it wasn't that far from where I lived, so we decided to give it a try. Surprise, surprise - chicken fried steak for me! I am amazed everytime I try a new restaurant's chicken fried steak - it's always good, but always a little bit different. The breading is different, and the gravy too. Sometimes it comes with Texas Toast underneath, and sometimes it comes with eggs and hash browns. I like trying all the different types and varieties of the same food, especially when it's chicken fried steak! It's interesting how different it is than California, but it's even more interesting how different it is from the restaurants all in the same neighborhood - everyone has their own spin, and I love them all (...or most of them at least). The portions at this place were huge, and I'll definitely be back for breakfast. YUM! read more

i love love love this place. first off, they are ALWAYS busy, but they get you seated very quickly. the staff are so friendly and they have enough staff to get you refills or anything you need. i always get chicken fried steak here and i keep trying other ma and pop diners' chicken fried steak like these, and Poor Richard's just keeps beating them and their prices cheap for the amounts of food you get. read more

I have been a customer at Poor Richard's Café since at least 1993. I have gone there with many, many friends. This Plano eatery was created by Pennsylvania native, former English teacher in the 1980's. This is a traditional diner with great food, superb, fast service and a friendly, home style atmosphere. They have some "diet" type items but if you want diet food - this isn't your kind of place. Monday thru Friday they serve breakfast and lunch. They tried dinner and it didn't work out. In the 1990's when I first started coming to Poor Richard's they were half their present or less! The lines would stretch down the shopping center several stores on Saturdays and many Sundays. Richard Butterly is a good businessman but he really cares about his customers. You'll find him many Saturday's and Sunday's wandering around and chattering with people - he knows many folks by name and he knows faces very well. COUNT on a line any Saturday or Sunday before about 11 AM. The line moves very, very fast. The staff at Poor Richard's is stupendous. Some have been there more than 18 years! These folks make you feel like a king - a beverage server brings your drinks, your server takes your order, someone usually delivers it in about ten minutes or less - and you're ready to go. These people are very kind and actually talk to you. We've been going so long they know our names! The pancakes and waffles are average, the egg and meat dishes are filling and the home-style potatoes are wonderful. They have specialty dishes like steak or chicken fajitas that are really superb and a very good value. Don't count on fresh vegetables - he doesn't have the space in his kitchen for fresh or frozen and probably never will. The chicken friend chicken and chicken fried steak is just wonderful and delicious with the white gravy. They have lunch items and sandwiches and these aren't bad - the sandwiches are quite good. No liquor. They have soft drinks, iced tea and coffee - and of course tap water (no bottled water here). If you come during Plano's famous Balloon Festival count on waiting a LONG time. Those Balloon people do wonders for our spirits and the local businesses but they tend to make the lines longer at eateries. Richard hired a restaurant consultant years ago and that man is still a general manager. He made the place quieter by installing PDA's and a system that tracks orders and sends them to the kitchen. Count on a noisy place though - try as he and his wife might to make the place homey and pleasant - it's a larger space and it's a bit noisy on those packaged Saturday and Sunday mornings. This Plano institution is likely to continue for many years to come. You can see why this erstwhile English teacher from Pennsylvania made such a success from Mr. Franklin's sayings - they're omnipresent on the walls and menu - along with Mr. Betterly's own choices for quotes. With a 4 star average rating and the constant influx of patrons I had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately I was disappointed. There were 3 in our party and our average was more of a 1.6, here's why: the Big Tex, which is a chicken fried steak breakfast with 3 eggs and fixins was lacking in flavor. The breading is thicker than the meat, and neither were seasoned well. The gravy was no help, either and was akin to a thin paste. We had coffee which was okay but waited for close to 15 minutes for a refill and that was because another server noticed our empty cups, s ours was nowhere in sight. We also got the home fries which, again, lacked even the basic seasoning. The only reason it gets 2 stars is that my husband's steak was a proper rate and his eggs were cooked properly, unlike mine or my son's. We got a Belgian waffle as well. It was very dense and bland and no crispness. Clearly this place has a following and a loyal group of regulars, it's just not up to my taste. We left more than half the food in our plates. We won't be back and we'll keep searching. read more

This is absolutely a great a breakfast place. Very reasonably priced, with very good food in huge portions. Waitresses are very nice as well, most of the time. The only downside here is that its so popular that a line tends to form to get a table and you may wait 20-30 minutes to sit down. This place is way overrated. Maybe back in the day it was good and the regulars still consider it as an option but there are other places I'll dine at in the future. Their version of "hash browns" is a McDonalds-like deep fried patty. Hey Richard, don't be so "poor" or cheap. And the cold biscuits, hash browns and bacon really turned me off.
