The Smoked Mushroom
Sarah W.

Good dive bar option downtown. I think it wasn't the best choice for our 5-person group. We had to huddle around a 4-top table because the larger tables were reserved for groups of 6+ (but then we saw groups of 2-3 sitting at those tables, so that was annoying). I think service was as expected for a dive bar, nothing overly outgoing, probably understaffed. The food and beer selection were both great. Most of us got a sandwich. I got the mushroom sandwich with mushroom broth, which was a really great vegetarian option. I'd go again with a group of 4 or less

I was last here almost 3 years ago. They have added more NA beverages and kept their prices the same. They still use QR codes, so no printed menus. Kevin M served me at the bar. I started with the Blossom NA. Very good Spritz type drink. Next was The Frenchie, a classic French Dip sandwich with lots of roast beef and gruyere cheese with au jus. I added the Crispy Potatoes tossed with parmesan cheese. I took a portion of the crispy potatoes home. They still charge a 1.5% kitchen appreciation fee. I saw a promotional sign for a French Dip Showdown on March 23 featuring Manny Barella of Riot BBQ and Erasmo Casino of Xiquita/Lucina with Rosaluna Mezcal.

Ajou and bourbon

AJOU!!! the ajou at this place is incredible!!! I was recommend this spot for a bourbon with ajou backs so it was top on my list while I visited Denver! We didn't eat but I would love to come back and get a French dip, I imagine they are delicious! We came on a Sunday mid day and it was pretty empty. I was so excited to be there and the bartenders unfortunately didn't seem interested in us or the excitement I had for this "famous" Ajou. Hopefully that will be different next time we come!

Tasty cocktails, some affordable beer and shot options, and delicious food! Great spot for a bite and drink downtown at night. Happy hour looked enticing as well.

Happy hour menu

Pony Up is a new find for me in Denver. Their happy hour is great - the Boulevardier for only $8 is an absolute steal, and they make it really well. The chips and queso blanco on the HH menu are super tasty too, perfect for snacking while you work through the cocktail list. But the standout for me is their lineup of French Dip sandwiches. They have several different takes on the classic, and although I've only tried one, they all look interesting and seriously delicious. It's fun to have a place that treats a simple sandwich with that much creativity. Great drinks, great food, great vibe - Pony Up nails it. Highly recommend!

If you like French dips this is your place! I was excited to find a restaurant that had a vegetarian French dip since this isn't a dish I've seen elsewhere. We had the Smoked Mushroom dip, the Saigon, and a side of crispy potatoes. The Mushroom dip was delicious- the bread was fluffy and fresh, mushroom was flavorful, with gooey swiss cheese and a wonderful Porcini broth au jus. I would absolutely come back for this! The Saigon was a unique take on a French dip with Asian flavors. Flavorful pork and spicy aioli were the stars of the sandwich. The crispy potatoes were exactly as advertised-- crispy, salty, and covered with Parmesan- I would absolutely recommend these! I also had an espresso martini which was a great execution of a classic. Overall would definitely come back!

hot dawg

10/10 one of my favorite bites the entire trip. So so glad I made the decision to walk into this establishment. You go in and seat yourself and the menu is a QR code. However the water is NOT self serve just an fyi LOL. We were so thirsty we went straight to the water, but was nicely told to sit down so they can bring it to us. Good value for the food. Actually incredible value, I'm pretty sure it was the cheapest meal we had on the trip. And it was one of the best. I got the hot dawg which is essentially a chicken sandwhich but long. It is a tad bit greasy but omg the chicken is so flavorful and juicy. There's a slight spice that's addicting and the marination of the ginger in the chicken really peaks through. I will have to also get the kaarage if I come back simply because of how delicious the hot dawg was. The pickle also is so fresh and crunchy, it tastes like it's made in house. I also got the buffalo wings extra crispy and they were solid. Service was very friendly and the decor is super neat. I don't go back to a place very often because I like to try new things but this place?? Has my heart for sure.

Chicken tenders

This might be the best chicken I've ever tasted. It almost melted in my mouth. Love the hint of ginger that they have. Chicken was absolutely good. The sauce was on point too. Not the biggest fan of the breading. A little oily. Liked the crunch though. Our staff was very attentive and kind. She added to the vibe of the place. It's nice inside. Lots of good decorations. They played a lot of good music too. I would definitely recommend

Solid place located in downtown Denver. Overall the service was great. The food was pretty average for bar food. My wife did complain about no hook in the woman's bathroom for a purse. Drinks were good and well made. The environment was fun and up beat. Def recommend this place!

Soft pretzel + Paloma

Looking for your new fave Denver bar? This is it. I've stopped in for some happy hour drinks and apps before Rockies, Avs, and Nuggets games and it checked all of the boxes! Plenty of seating, an outdoor patio, full bar, and great food, refreshing drinks, + fabulous service?! Love. Happy hour is from 4-7pm, which is perfect for some after work drinks. Check out their bartender's special--it's been awesome every time I've ordered it. But lemme tell you about the pretzel because she was delish. I don't know what I enjoyed most -- the golden outer crust, the soft, fluffy insides, the savory buttery coating, or the ideal sprinkle of flaky salt... Yeah, y'all need to try it. The pretzel comes with a honey mustard dipping sauce, and while I wish it was a beer cheese dip, I will say the mustard was tasty. Bookmark this bar for your next trip to Denver -- you'll be glad you did!

I see you, Pony Up! Came here for an early dinner on a Thursday evening after playing putt putt down the street at Holey Moley. It was quiet and cozy and had a nice festive vibe. Love the decor - both seasonal and permanent. We sat by the fireplace which was lovely. Turns out happy hour was going, but only I participated with the "Desert Rose" mocktail (more on that below). My husband had their Cookie Jar old fashioned. It smelled amazing but was a tad too sweet for his preference. For food, we had to try their dip sandwiches given it's their niche. I had The Smoked Mushroom which was so delicious and the hubs went with The Alameda Street, which he devoured. I took half of mine home since I also had the French onion soup - a winner on a chilly winter evening. Service was attentive (no half empty water cups here!) and friendly. I would for sure recommend Pony Up and am looking forward to returning. Zero Proof Review: I'm on a quest to check out all the zero proof, mocktail and n/a beverages that Denver and beyond has to offer. Pony Up had a good selection that spanned mocktails, beers, and even a sparkling wine (yes!!). I had their Desert Rose mocktail which was well balanced, flavorful and decently complex. I would be happy coming here again and trying their other options.

Service was great. One of best espresso martinis I've had. French dip was good. Cool mix between cozy restaurant and bar

What a fun atmosphere! Loved this bar. Definitely try the Pony Up Shot: a shot of whiskey with a shot of hot, salty, savory au jus to chase it down. It was DIVINE. Also got the chicken karaage as a light snack but these were some huge chicken tender-like pieces with tempura batter. Delicious. The bartender checked on us regularly and was super friendly to chat with. It could easily be a regular spot for me if I lived in the Denver area!

Is this more of a bar/club late night? We're traveling to Denver with a teenager so curious if this becomes a 21+ or if still able to come with all ages?

We are 21+ from 9pm to close Friday and Saturday but will accommodate families when we can!

What are the daily 4-7 happy hour specials?

Half off champagne every night at 11pm and all day Sunday

Bedlam was recommended to us for late night drinks by staff working in one of the restaurants at our hotel. During our short stay in Denver, we went to Bedlam twice. The first time was around 11:30 on a Thursday night. We had a few cocktails along with a cheese and charcuterie plate. The second time was around 12:30 on a Saturday night when we came in for a night cap. The first time we came in, it wasn't too busy, and we were encouraged to sit wherever we wanted. The bar was full so we chose a small table. Our server gave us menus, though specials were written on a chalkboard above the bar. We each tired a couple of cocktails and had a shot called the Master Shot. We also chose the make-your-own charcuterie board. Our favorite drink was the Woo Girl, which allowed us to choose our spirit of choice. I chose gin and my friend chose tequila. When we returned a couple of nights later, we knew already we were going to order the Woo Girl cocktail. It was packed on a Saturday night, but there was a small table in back where they seated us. This bar is more for spending time with the friends you come with, rather than mingling, as staff seats you at a table. It doesn't seem like they offer standing room or just squeezing in, though maybe we just didn't experience that. That said, all in all, I really enjoyed Bedlam and recommend it to anyone going to Denver.

My friends and I tried a number of the signature cocktails and had a few hot toddys that were super good. I'm personally a big gin and soda fan and loved ther housemade tonic that was in their classic G&T. Did not try any of the food but the dawgs were definitely would be tempting if I was hungry. Loved the decor and the plants all up in the space. The space is a bit more dimly lit and I think of a reasonable volume for a date. Would love to come back and spend some more time here.

That's when I came across Dearly Departed and I'm so glad I did. We arrived right when they opened at 5pm and were able to walk in and be seated immediately. The speakeasy is tucked into the underground portion of the restaurant, which adds to the charm. The space is beautifully decorated, moody, intimate, and effortlessly upscale. It truly sets the tone the moment you walk down. We ordered two spritzes and a charcuterie board, and both exceeded expectations. The drinks were refreshing, perfectly balanced, and felt elevated without being overcomplicated. But the real star was the charcuterie board. For $20, it was an incredible value, stacked with a variety of meats, cheeses, fresh veggies, nuts, and peppers. The freshly grilled bread was a standout touch, and the portions were more than generous. Every bite felt thoughtfully curated, and there was something new and delicious in every corner of the board. Between the ambiance, the quality of the drinks, and the impressive food, Dearly Departed delivered an experience that felt both cozy and refined. I'd absolutely recommend checking it out for the atmosphere alone. I'm already looking forward to going back and trying more from their menu.

Cozy spot for some classy bites and cocktails. I think I probably got off on the wrong foot when I asked for sparkling water instead of flat and found out it was $7 per personal mini bottle (and they don't have club soda). My first time encountering that in Denver in the last 14 years... The cocktail concept is cool: pick a classic, slightly updated, or super creative version from 5 categories (martini, old fashioned, sour, spritz, highball). The spicy mango sour (with mezcal) was awesome -- although I expected egg white on a sour. The martinis were ok... a bit of a let-down in today's collection of Denver martinis at other local spots (think anchovy, sour cream and onion, holy trinity, and old bay). The food was also hit or miss. We loved the cauliflower/potato Bravas with the slightly spicy sauce, as well as the croquettes and their sauce. The tuna crudo was super bland, which is disappointing for $19.
