Gosh, I wish I lived close enough to be a regular here! The drinks are impeccable - you truly can't miss with whichever option you choose. There is an extensive, beautiful book with detailed descriptions of each drink as well as the tree that inspires it. The Tatarian is a great cocktail bar in the Berkely neighborhood in Denver. It's a cool, elevated neighborhood joint that knows their craft. It's an intimate and welcoming space that instantly shows you they know their stuff. Especially because of the amazing smoky smell in the air from their love of smoking cocktails. What's better than that?? The story behind the name is really cool. Before the turn of the century, each new land owner who bought property in the neighborhood was gifted a shade tree from the city. The tree that thrived most in the neighborhood was the maple tree, specifically the Tatarian variety. Hence the name. The cocktail menu is one of the most beautiful menu books I've ever seen in any restaurant or bar. The artwork is extraordinary. Sadly, I didn't think to take any photos to show it off except one recipe page and the cover. Trust me, it's special!! The cocktail shown in the photo was delicious. The Blackjack is Rye whiskey, Islay scotch, Benedictine, Amaro Nonino, Chocolate bitters. It was a beautiful spin on an Old Fashioned. Next time you're in Denver you should check them out. This bar does not have a sign out front so you have to really look for it. It has a sleek and modern interior. The bar staff will direct you to seats. They run an efficient shop. When it's busy it may take a while, but the service is on point and they will take good care of you. For the lay person and unsophisticated consumer (like myself) their drink menu consists of complex strings of indecipherable words. Better to ask the bartender for a recommendation. Perhaps one day someone will invent a sniff menu for drinks. My friend and I had a good time catching up here, though it got loud! Tatarian is another really good spot, a great neighborhood cocktail bar specializing in "tree inspired" drinks. It's almost always very busy, but even on a Saturday night you won't need to wait too long for a spot. A unique cocktail list is the thing here, from seasonal offerings to their rotating cast. The Senator was unlike anything I'd had, perhaps a bit too heavy on the syrup, but an enjoyable, unique experience. The ambience is nice as well, though it can be cramped depending on where you are. We tried to find a good place to drink for our last night in Denver during our summer vacation trip. And we found Tatarian on a Tuesday night. The ambience is awesome. Love all the interior decorations and lighting. We got the Rainbow and Baobob for the first round. It took a while and we had a sneak peak of how they were made. The drinks turned out to be extremely beautiful and tasty, like a piece of art. Then we got the Kapok, which reminded me of the breeze on Big Island in Hawaii. It combines all the tropical fruit taste and is very well balanced. We finished our night with Green tea shots, which is a special request from us to the bartender/manager. Our bartender was extremely kind and as busy as she was making drinks for a whole bunch of people, she constantly checked up on us to make sure we were satisfied. It's easily one of my favorite bars in the whole country, both for customer service and excellent cocktails. My friend took me here, as it's one of her favorite bars too. We sat at the bar, and the bartender handed us menus, which are available for purchase. Each drink is so interesting, detailing a backstory for each cocktail name. Gradually I want to come back to try everything, but this time I got two. First was the Amate, an iced tequila and grapefruit cocktail. So refreshing. Second I had the Dragon's Blood, which is a hot gin and tried fruits drink. Both were some of the most unique drinks I've ever tried! I love the art of cocktail creation, and our bartender was wildly talented. After we loosened up a bit, we got to talking about the best places to visit in Denver. It was the first time I felt genuinely excited to move here, as I was bittersweet and anxious before. It might get a little pricey to make Tatarian a regular habit, so maybe I'll save it for a special occasion or take out-of-town guests here. Árbol del Tule - Mezcal, Coffee Liqueur, Liquor 43, Montenegro, Demerara, Hellfire Shrub, Angostura Bitters. The inspiration comes from a meaningful tree at Oaxaca's famous church grounds. I'm pretty sure this is me in cocktail form. Smokey, rich, sweet, spicy and deep. With a boatload of intense flavor profiles, I was rather impressed how all the ingredients played off of each other. In regard to COVID precautions, they have hand sanitizing stations at every table, staff are wearing masks, and there are QR codes to view the menu. The menu was very large! I must have walked past it so many times during the day without noticing it, but glad it came up on my radar in a search I did. My husband and I tried The Tartarian and Blackjack for our first round of drinks, as we are both Old Fashioned and Manhattan lovers. Both were great, though the Blackjack was a bit sweeter than I expected, but still a solid drink. For our second round, we tried Dragon's Blood and Camellia, which are both warm and tea-based drinks.
