A hidden gem! I have passed by High Lonesome numerous times. It always looks closed from the outside but, go in! I came here with a friend that calls this her "one of her favorite cocktail bars in Denver". There was no one in the place on a Monday night so we sat at the bar and began chatting with Rob, our bartender. Rob was so fun! We had a great conversation with him. A few other couples came in and out, grabbing a drink or two it was pretty quiet. The drink was perfectly balanced. They change their menu every season and each drink is created by one of their bartenders. I can't wait to experience the fall and winter menus! High Lonesome is as close as you can get to the textbook definition of a neighborhood bar. I like the name, I dig the vibes, and it's one of those places that can appease any type of bar rat. Located in the Highlands on Navajo, set foot in a laid back and casual atmosphere. It's divey, has a pool table and a jukebox. You're here for a good time, so drink up. Cheap beers in bottles and a really nice selection of whiskies. The fact you have the option to order a made to order, hand crafted cocktail or a cheap beer resonates with me. My only qualm with this place is that is usually takes me a million years to get a drink. I've been here half a dozen times and I don't know if it's just bad luck on my end, but I've had to wait at the bar for a long time. The bartenders work hard and sometimes are dealing with rowdy patrons, I've just been skipped a handful of times. Won't stop me from coming back, just my experience! For cocktails, you can't go wrong with their house old fashioned or negroni. Or even their Japanese whiskey highballs. They do have a rotating selection of house cocktails too that I've had previously and enjoyed. For beers, I love that they have Coors Banquet, Hamms, Lone Star and Miller High Life for $4. They also boast some great local ales for only a few bucks more. Great neighborhood bar. Should be in the rotation more often. The High Lonesome is a neighborhood bar that has been around for 8 years. A bison overlooks the patrons from the bar with a great selection of whiskey and other spirits. Bartenders are super friendly and greet you when you walk in the door. They have a rotating list of cocktails based on the season as well as a large selection of beer. My favorite, though, is their House Old Fashioned. Usually $10 on their regular menu but also on special frequently. A smooth yet boozy blend of a dash of bitters, simple syrup, orange peel that is twisted into the cocktail, and whiskey poured over a cube of ice. Perfection. read more

The space itself is quite small with maybe a dozen 2-4 top tables, medium sized bar top, and one pool table. They have a fantastic eclectic selection on draft with a deep selection of spirits. I have never felt so ostracized in my life. I asked the bartender for a charger and he proceeded to ask if the two gay men behind me were "my friends". When i said yes, he responded with "yeahhhh... i don't have a charger" as we were looking directly at the charger. We then had SEVERAL people come up to us pointing out that he was intensely staring at us. Mind you we are all four visibly queer. I made eye contact while he was staring at one point, and he started to laugh at me. I can not make this stuff up. I have been here many times and have never felt so so uncomfortable and unwelcome. There is a difference between being discriminated against and hearing about discriminated against. Many times, some sort of alternative explanation is given. And at first, i did NOT assume that he was being hateful. My first thought was that he was having a bad day. Until he interacted with every other customer as if he knew they were going to tip him extremely well. But when it came to us, he was hateful and disgusting. He stared at us periodically the ENTIRE time that we were there, with no shame or guilt. Two of us left the bar prematurely to go home because we felt so incredibly uncomfortable. Vibe-wise, it's dark and moody and feels sort of like your cool friend who rides motorcycles would come here a lot. There's a pool table and a juke box in the back if you're the type who likes to partake in activities whilst drinking. Personally, I bellied up to the bar in the cool red chairs and sipped my fancy tequila cocktail (called Whore's Bath with lemon, lavender syrup, and an egg white). If fancy cocktails aren't your thing, they've got *A LOT* of fun beers--lots of local stuff, canned stuff, Lone Star in bottles. Got the munchies? They've got a pickled egg + pretzels special, plus hot dogs and beer nuts. Our bartender was a hip and very helpful (and also makes a dang good cocktail). This bar adhered to all COVID-19 policies. Tables were socially distanced, staff wore masks, and staff wiped down every surface after a table left. I feel like this place is kind of unassuming from the outside, and then you walk in and it has a very vintage/NYC/cool vibe without all of the pretentiousness of a lot of the bars in Denver. They typically have a pool table and juke box in non-covid times, but they don't have them at the moment. Not sure if they'll return, but they would totally add to the vibe. Drinks were super yummy.
