My love. This is my favorite place ever. I know there are MANY people who would outright disagree with me. Born and raised in Glendale and a frequent eater at my Vietnamese moms kitchen this is so good. Service and ambiance are def hit or miss. But if you go in knowing that you won't be disappointed. Tried a new dish today - bun bo hue - spicy vermicelli soup with tender cuts of beef and pork. The original item comes with pork blood and meatloaf slices but I requested for none of those, just the beef and pork cuts. The soup was moderately spiced. Not super spicy for me. My husband was placed on a plant based diet due to health issues. (No meat, fish or dairy.) We looked at the vegetarian options and got #108 and #109 with rice subbed for the noodles. I asked for peanut sauce for the spring rolls. The food came quickly but no peanut sauce and 2 bowls of liquid that we had no idea what they were. After waving down several employees we finally found one who spoke broken English. She said the bowls of liquid had pork in one and fish base in another. We order from the Vegetarian section! I was able to get the peanut sauce. The tofu shredded ",pork" was very good. But we will never go back. It is too hard to figure out what they are putting in the food without someone understanding English well enough to get our food correct. I come here way too often. Way. Too. Often. My recent pho craving hit this past Friday, and my mind immediately jumped to Pho Thanh. Unfortunately they were closed ($&!@&!!), so I trekked a little farther and gave another pho location. Out of the five pho locations I've tried in Phoenix, none compare to Pho Thanh. It's definitely my favorite pho in the Phoenix area, but there are some caveats that make it not quite hit the 4star mark for me: - Inconsistency: sometimes the pho broth is thick and flavorful, and sometimes it's more watery. Understandable, but at times disappointing. The meat suffers from the same inconsistency, though the beef tendon is definitely the best-cooked version I've had. It's sometimes in chunks, sometimes in slices, and that roulette has been saddening on more than one occasion. - Service is pretty nonexistent. This is typical of a hole in the wall Vietnamese joint and doesn't bother me too much, but if we're comparing to the standards of other pho restaurants who do have friendly and prompt service, Pho Thanh loses out a bit there as well. Having someone wave you to a table, take an order, and arbitrarily shove dishes on the table doesn't take away from the food, but does take away from the overall experience. With that being said, the pho here is still really good and I would recommend it over any other Vietnamese restaurant if food is the first priority. Appetizers: I've tried all the combinations of fresh spring rolls, and they're not bad, but I prefer the traditional shrimp ones. The pork ones tend to be on the dryer side where meat is concerned, and for some reason I've found that the rice paper wrapper is also thicker for the pork ones. These spring rolls aren't the best I've ever had, but they'll satisfy a craving. Pho: The beef noodle soup with rice noodles come with a variety of toppings to choose from: rare steak, brisket, tendon, tripe, meatballs, ox tail, beef ribs. There is the traditional combination with a little bit of everything and there are also combinations where a few meat options are narrowed down. Each pho comes with toppings of beansprouts, basil, jalapeños, lime, and sometimes seasonal vegetables. Portions are pretty generous, and there are XL sizes for the especially hungry. The soup is savory and fragrant most of the time, and I really adore the tendon here, especially when it's served in tender chunks that melt in the mouth. Hoisin and sriracha, as well as fish sauce and chili paste, are self serve at each table. Non-pho entrees: I've sampled the dry vermicelli and broken rice dishes. They pale in comparison to the pho, but I think that's mainly because I'm not a fan of the meat served in them. I've found the meat tends to be on the dryer side, but the side ingredients are pretty good. Drinks: Oh man I love the soymilk here. It's the traditional Asian soy milk I grew up with. It has the potent soybean taste that American soymilk lacks, and it's not too sweet. It's served iced and is a great pairing for the steaming pho. Desserts: There's a variety of prepackaged Vietnamese desserts available in the refrigerated case next to the cashier. There are offerings such as fresh young coconut, three bean mix with coconut milk, sticky corn with coconut milk, sticky purple rice and coconut milk, sour yogurt, dates and longan with seaweed, and rice balls in fermented rice wine. I've pretty much tried all of them, but my favorite are definitely the sticky rice ones with coconut milk or the rice balls in fermented rice wine. The sour yogurt is also pretty good; it's a smoother, more tart version of greek yogurt and has a fragrant milk taste. Needless to say, I'll be back the next time I have a hankering for pho. read more

I've been to several pho restaurants around Phoenix and like the pho at Pho Thanh the best. There's something about it - it just seems more aromatic than pho at other places. The service here is fast and efficient. It's funny that whenever we call to place a takeout order, Pho Thanh never asks for a name for the order, they just figure it out when you get there to pick it up. I enjoy other things on their menu too aside from the pho. In fact, I usually order one of their Bun dishes or rice paper fresh rolls. I got the beef slices and meatball pho. Beef slices were close to rock solid, no flavor and a terrible texture. The meatballs were good, so i was happy with that. The broth sucked. It was so oily and didn't have that clean flavor and refreshing feeling I get with other pho i've had. The broth doesn't have anything that stand out. The noodles were pretty mediocre as well. It was on the thicker side of other rice noodles I had. Its bouncy but I wish they were thinner. You'll want to pair the pho with chilli oil/siracha or else it's over bro. Not a fancy place but we 100% appreciate the cafeteria-like, authentic 'Vietnamese diner' atmosphere. It was an experience and the food was on point. We had 2 varieties of beef Pho and they did not skimp on ingredients like some other Pho restaurants we have been to recently. This place has been one of my old school favorite Pho places for a long time. The family that runs the joint is super nice. My constant is the #11 w/ tripe, tendon, steak and meat balls. No noodles, extra veggies. ITS BOMB! The broth is flavorful and not overly salted. If you want to close a deal, bring your client here.
