I haven't been to this restaurant in over 20 years. Since moving to Phoenix, I have been wanting to go back to my old stomping grounds but haven't been able to come on a weekend (always very packed). I happen to be in the neighborhood a couple weekends ago and stopped in. This was the original and First Vietnamese restaurant in Phoenix back in 1985. The restaurant is very basic inside, has two seating areas when you walk in there's a register and a host stand. The prices are seemingly similar to the restaurants in the area and I was glad to see that they weren't charging $6 to $7 dollars for two spring rolls, which is always a good sign. I scoped the room of other patrons and families eating, I did notice the portions of the food were good and everyone seemed be enjoying themselves. I appreciated that the Pho broth was clear both rather than a dark broth, and it was not oily as some other reviewers have noted. The pho broth seemed to be missing an ingredient possibly anise star or cinnamon. It was good but not the best I've had. The food overall was tasty, the staff was nice and friendly. The service was quick. And they seem to be a little more attentive than most service workers in Vietnamese restaurants. I've heard so many great things about Da Vang over the years and when I was finally in the area this week I had to stop in for lunch. The parking lot is small, but it was worth waiting for a spot. I was shocked to walk in to a packed house already at 1045. That's a great sign right? We were greeted instantly talent to a table. Waters were brought to our table as well while we looked over a very vast menu. I knew i wanted pho, but I nearly changed my mind because they had so many unique and delicious looking items. We ordered a few egg rolls while we decided what to order for our main course. Soon we came up with an order of pho ga and pho tai gan. Everything came out so fast. The broth was amazing and plenty of steak and meatball in our soup. Noodles were the perfect amount. Our friend that was with us had never had pho and loved it. The location is in a small, much older and unassuming lot. It would be easily missed if you didn't know it was there. Do yourself a favor though and come check them out. My only semi negative comment if that is that we sat quite a while at our table when we were done not knowing if we had to wait for a server to give us the bill or pay at the front. We opted to walk up and sure enough it is paid at the counter when done. They knew instantly stay what table we were at before I said anything, impressive. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars as the late Senator McCain often liked to come here. He was a POW held during the Vietnam War, and despite that, he could still appreciate a nation's food. This place has often been featured in local magazines and touted to have some of the best Vietnamese food in the Valley. Well, I guess all that publicity and hype has gotten into their heads. This place probably was very good at one time, but tonight, my experience here was more than underwhelming. After a moderate hike in late summer heat, I was pretty tired and a bit thirsty and wanted to have some pho, so I stopped in here. Place was packed with people. I came in solo and was seated at table 19. A kid brought me my menu. I asked to have an iced chanh moui (salted lemon drink) and the kid seemed very confused and then trier to take the menu away and I had to ask for it back. Another waiter showed up since the kid had no idea what I was asking and when I asked for the salted lemon drink, he shook his head. That made me disappointed as I love this drink. He then offered a regular lemonade and I didn't want that. I then ordered a meatball pho and within minutes it arrived. I don't know why these days it feels like all the pho I have been having is just seasoned a bit too sweet for me. I used to not have this issue. So this pho was mediocre at best for me. Meatballs were fine and everything else was OK. Portion size was about what you expect, not a lot of extra food. I did have some leftovers so did ask to have a container to take it to go. You pay at the counter and can tip there or at the table. This place was swarming with people, so I guess it's good. I don't think I'll be coming back when there are plenty of pho options here in the Valley. read more
