The food is good, the owner is a dick!
I have been frequenting this place for the last few years since it opened, mainly because it's on my way home. The food is normally decent to good, however, tonight is the final straw when it comes to their customer service and this was directly with the owner.
Tonight, I called my order in, the normal vermicelli bowl with pork, it's hard to mess that up. I walked in to find the owner taking a to-go order over the phone and was asked to wait despite the fact the owner was not using the cash register (anyone could have rung my out if they were customer focused), but none the less wait I did. When the owner hung up, he asked what I ordered and then said it was $10+ dollars. When I presented him with my debit/Visa card he stated that it would be a $.50 charge for using a card. I asked "even for an order over $5?". I'm aware that some small businesses charge a fee for order below $5, but $10, come on man, as a fellow biz owner that's on you to negotiate better terms with your credit card processor. However, to this question the owner went a very different direction; he blamed it on the new $15 minimum wage in Seattle. MIND YOU THAT MINIMUM WAGE WENT UP TO $11 IN APRIL AND WON'T REACH $15 TILL 2017, once again, I know, I'm a business owner as well. When I stated this fact he said, well you can pay in cash. I retorted, who has cash anymore? His answer, "I do". I stated that I thought he was making a huge error and needed to look at a different way of handling this, he, the owner, went off. He stated that "It pissed him off that I'm bitching about $.50 when he goes to AM/PM and has to pay a fee for using his card to buy cigarettes". Wait, he just said he had cash, why is he paying that fee to AM/PM I thought, and what do your health choices have to do with gauging me for food. Not to mention a lie he's perpetuating about min wage. I once again asked about the reasoning here and he stated that they could either raise their prices $1.50-$2 per menu item or just charge the $.50 for people using a card. I calmly stated that he had just lost my business forever and he returned that I was just whiney and should carry cash (mind you his place in on Delridge where carrying cash might get you jumped). As I left the restaurant I walked by his fully loaded Dodge Charger that thought, that is really where my $.50 went.
In visits past I have dealt with inconsistent operating hours, being ignored for long stretches when I eat in, and their new policy, that based on their lack of tables I'm now asked to inhale my food so that they can make room for other guests (wait I'm supposed to be mindful of other patrons, but the OWNER CAN BE A DICK?!?!). But this is the final straw. This owner likes to take his problems and make them his customers issues. I REFUSE TO SUPPORT A BUSINESS LIKE THIS AND HOPE YOU'LL THINK TWICE BEFORE SUPPORTING THEM WITH YOUR DOLLARS. There are hundreds of great Pho options in this great city, no reason to help a guy who finances his toys with your money and perpetuates lies about why he is doing it.
Drive to White Center or head to Tan Brothers on California, they appreciate your business and make you feel welcome. Not to mention their food is always good to great. Good luck to these people, after 27 years (which the owner stated as his experience) in the biz I'd think you'd understand customer service a lot better! Don't need to help a place that is run by an egotistical dumbass. read more
