Oooooo its a vibe in here! Super cool vibe and delicious food. I literally feel like im in an old restaurant in italy. There was alot of hype for the opening of this restaurant in the paper and blogs because it used to be an italian restaurant called nicks... which was nostalgic for alot of vancouver kids growing up in the 90's. The portions here are pretty good sized for two people to share and order a couple of things, and thats what we did! The Fettuccine Alfredo & Mushrooms here was delicious. I didnt know mushrooms could really make the meal and the pasta was al dente this was def my fave of the night. I love how they have such intricate salads! I got the antipasto. I want to come back and try the avocado salad too! My hubby got the prime rib. It was very rich in flavor, maybe from the olive oil. One thing I didnt like was the Chicken Piccata, Spaghetti with Butter & Cheese. The chicken was very salty when I ordered it, but I had friends that came here and they said theirs wasnt. So maybe i was just unlucky. The tiramisu was nothing spectacular, and their dessert menu was pretty limited to 3 items only. But overall it was a good experience. We really enjoyed our dinner because of the great service. We ordered the calamari, linguine & clams and canneloni. Calamari was awesome. Pasta did not dissappoint at all at the time. Although on the way home, our stomach felt weird. I do notice that the clams was not fresh and theres a bit of rock or dirt in the clams which I have to put aside. I'd definitely recommend to make a reservation if you plan to have dinner here. The restaurant was completely full when I arrived on a Saturday at 7:45PM. I love the ambiance; it's dimly lit and romantic. Some tables are a little closer to each other than I'd like, but otherwise it's the perfect place for a date. They offer some bread to start, with a cup of butter. It was a very generous amount of butter for two people. The bread was very standard - not much flavour but soft enough and good with the butter. It doesn't come served warm, like some other places do. We ordered the Caesar salad to share; the portion was large enough for 2 people as an appetizer. They used whole leaves of romaine lettuce and it was very well dressed. I thoroughly enjoyed the Caesar salad. I suspect they may use some blue cheese (or something similar) in it as the salad had a slight pungent aftertaste. I ordered the Big Anthony pork chop for $32, which came with a side of spaghetti (I chose the garlic and chili sauce). My boyfriend ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. I thought that the pork chop was well cooked; the meat was very tender and juicy. The breading was tasty too but fell apart from the meat easily. The side of spaghetti was mediocre for me; it tasted very buttery with a hint of spice. I didn't taste much garlic at all which was disappointing. I also tried my boyfriend's spaghetti and meatballs. (This was a huge portion by the way!). The spaghetti was surprisingly soft for an Italian restaurant; I expected it to be more al dente. The meatballs were pretty good; they were not dry and I could taste the different herbs/spices used to make them. However, they were a bit salty. The spaghetti sauce was good but nothing outstanding. I probably wouldn't recommend this dish for $26. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Pepino's. The service was good, and I think the price point is fair considering their generous portions. So it's good to go knowing a few things: This is a cozy space so it's LOUD and you may be sitting very close to another table. We were a twosome sitting next to another table of 2 and I felt like I was on their date Food-wise: - complimentary bread basket with really tasty whipped butter. Just a shame that the bread is not warm and a little hard - calamari is delicious and that dipping sauce is SO good and addictive - we had two kinds of pasta: linguine and spot prawn scampi (good but oily) and Nick's meat ravioli with meat sauce (excellent, meat mixture was perfect). - Between two people, this was plenty of food. I really wanted to love this meal, but I felt like for the price and overall experience, it didn't quite add up. I felt very cramped and rushed given how busy they are. We had a reservation for a table of 6; as it's a global pandemic we weren't sharing food but the items we ordered were: Ling Cod - This looked delicious, huge portion with lots of tomatoes, the friend who had this was very pleased Chicken Piccata - Chicken. For. DAYS. Holy this was a wild portion! It was like my friend was served an entire chicken on an entire garden of carrots. All chicken all carrots all the time. My friend definitely took home leftovers. She did comment that it might have been nice to have another veggie in the mix as opposed to all carrots all the time. Gnocchi - Little fluffy pillows that dreams are made of. And it was a generous portion as well - sometimes you only get a sad three of 'em, but not at pepinos, there must have been like 15-20, and that sauce was fabulously creamy Spaghetti and Meatballs - MEAT BALLS. The friend that ordered the spaghetti and meatballs was a large-built man and those meat balls were the size of his fists. Honestly impressive. They must have been some hearty meatballs on a heaping bed of spaghetti. No one was disappointed by those portions! Cheese Tortellini - Mmmmmm the creamy pesto sauce was everything I wanted and more... The little tortellini's were STUFFED with cheese and I enjoyed every bite. Again, it was more than 3 little dudes, it was definitely 8ish but the sauce was very satisfying. "The Big Nick" Pizza - Detroit style is what prompted me to order pizza in addition to pasta and the crust was everything I wanted. The sauce was good and I loved the sausage. However, it was a bit of an olive overload. I had it as leftovers a couple nights later and it was delicious but if I could do it all over again I would have ordered a second pasta dish instead. Overall it was wonderful. I thought that the Italian/'Merican fusion was a fun combination especially with the hefty American portions. I would say that the pastas take first prize in their offerings but no matter what you get you are in no danger of leaving hungry. Pasta servings aren't super generous , but each plate will be enough to share between 2 people. Larger groups will need more. I went to Pepino's after a recommendation from a friend. We really enjoyed our meal here. The service was excellent and the host and server were so accommodating. We brought our 6 month old and they were so friendly and kind to her and made sure we were comfortable. I really liked the ambience. The place has low lighting and which to me is very relaxing and romantic. We went fairly early so it didn't feel too crowded but I can imagine that during prime time that it can feel very squishy as tables can feel a bit close together. I like that there is the choice of still or sparkling water. The sparkling water wasn't too carbonated which was nice because I usually am not a fan. We ordered pasta and calamari. My husband liked the calamari. The batter reminded me of Fried tofu that you get at Chinese restaurants or hk cafes. The calamari was nice and crispy on the outside and easy to bite through on the inside. None of it came out rubbery. For our main dish we ordered penne alla vodka and spaghetti with meatballs. They were both tasty. The pasta was cooked al dente. The penne tasted very rich and creamy. Whereas the spaghetti was more light and refreshing in comparison. You can really taste the freshness of the tomatoes they used. I also liked that the tomato sauce was sweet rather than tart. I generally go for bolognese for that reason but if I go back. I really enjoyed my experience at Pepino's. It's been open for a while now and I always try and wait until things have settled into routine before testing something out. I am sorry I didn't visit sooner! We ordered the Spicy Penne alla Vodka ($23), Rapini ($8), and a Meatball ($6) side. Everything was delicious and I've been trying to recreate the penne alla vodka at home ever since! As I live 2 blocks from Pepinos, I thought I'd take myself out for dinner. I was warmly greeted and shown to my table. However, as I was alone, I felt that I may not have been as "special" as if I were there with a partner. At one point I commented on my server's tattoo - he immediately moved to the next table to discuss tattoos with another diner. I was completely ignored. The cannelloni was good, as was the wine. And the Negroni cocktail. Music was disappointing - I was hoping for something Italian but no luck. Just that horrible background beat. Service was ok. I had very high hopes for this restaurant and I will definitely return. The food was good, but it didn't quite meet the mark the way the food at Savio Volpe is always over the top. Three of us did famiglia and there was too much food for us to finish but made for great leftovers. There were two salads, some sort of antipasto platter, giant pork smothered in cheese and tomato sauce, chicken picata (the star of the night), and two pastas. Then came dessert which I would characterize as NY Style cheesecake. Great wine list, nice prosecco list in particular. Food gets a 4, the rigatoni was sort of plain and lacked flavour. Service gets a 2.5 - felt like they were short staffed as there seemed to be only one server on the floor. Ambiance and atmosphere - I personally wasn't a fan. Extremely underwhelming after reading all the amazing reviews. FOOD: We ordered the calamari and Caesar salad to start. The calamari was different from other calamari we've ever had. It looks like a long fish cake with a sponge texture. It's similar to 魚餅. It came with a garlic sauce but, it tasted more like ranch sauce. The caesar salad was just whole pieces of romaine lettuce with a little bit of dressing; it wasn't bad. For the main entree, we both order the spaghetti and meatballs with gravy. And this was the most disappointing spaghetti I've ever had. Knowing that Pepino's is from the same group of people at Savio Volpe, expectations were high. The pasta sauce was very bland and tasted like there was no seasoning. It honestly tasted like jarred tomato sauce from the grocery store poured over some boxed spaghetti. The meatballs were over seasoned; it was very, very salty. So salty that it over powered the rest of the pasta. On the plus side, portions were quite large. AMBIENCE: The restaurant had an old school vibe. The walls were decorated in photos and one wall was covered in strips of mirrors. The noise level was normal; not too loud. SERVICE: Previous reviews would mention about how the wait staff had a weird attitude. And I have to agree with that. The server we had was very awkward and gave off a judgemental attitude. The hostess however, was very friendly and offered water and bread while we waited for our table to be ready. If you're wanting good pasta, I'd stick with Savio Volpe instead. I had been to Nick's so long ago I could barely remember it so this review is just based on the spot that is there today. The food: to me, this place serves North American style Italian. Not real classic Italy Italian. But that's what it is and I knew that. everyone at our birthday table seemed happy. I had the classic meat ravioli, cooked el dente, and a nice mix ravioli in a salty meat sawwwz. I was super hungry, so maybe that was a factor, but I ate almost all of it. Serving size was perfect for me, not too big, but some may be expecting HUGE portions -- however, I don't like huge ridiculous portions. *Maybe* they were a bit light on the sauce in mushroom Alfredo and the marinara pasta, I would have bigged up the sauce more for this style of Italian. Phenomenal food! Upon checking in we were greeted with champagne to celebrate our 5th anniversary. Once seated, we had the calamari to start and it was outstanding paired nicely with a garlic emulsion sauce! Next up was spinach & ricotta cannelloni and the chicken piccata. I can't stress enough how amazing the chicken piccata was. I'm still thinking about it. My partner loved his cannelloni as well and said it was amazing. These jerks bring an uppity, Yaletown vibe to a local neighbourhood. My wife and I accepted their earliest reservation at 7pm for 8:30, because we've been a few times and know it's busy. Although we had been working all day and were very hungry, we decided to wait it out since all I could think of was prime rib. We arrived on time and ordered a drink because our table 'wasn't ready'. For 30 minutes we watched the owner himself, Paul Cumberg seat one person after a another (all that came in after us) until we were once again the only ones in the waiting area. Then his friends walk up. 'You have room for us?' Owner Paul: (in bad need of a shampoo) 'let me check,' and he does. He comes right back and starts to seat them, right in front of us. Pepino's is my favorite restaurant on the drive. It is classic America-Italian food, well done, and at a great price. The staff are really great and the atmosphere is fun and cozy. It is quite loud so it's difficult to hear anyone who is not directly across from you; so for large groups it might not be the best. I recommend the Spaghetti and Meatballs, Vodka Penne, Calamari, the Bolognese, and the Pork chop if you have a group to share it with. Pair it all with an aperol spritz. Service was very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Appetizers: we had the Caesar salad, which is large enough for two. Alex told us they're using Nick's Spaghetti House recipe. Fresh, but needs more zing. Hubby had the calamari and enjoyed it. We shared the spaghetti and (two massive) meatballs. Fresh and tasty, and plenty for two. The room is retro, with many of the original features, but cleaned up. Very loud, so not the place if you want intimate conversation. We'll return to try other menu items. 3.5 stars really. A bustling restaurant with tons of nostalgic touches (waiters with the white apron and black bow tie, wood panelled walls, cheesy paintings, bibs for spaghetti eating etc). Never went to Nick's but was curious about the hype of it's reinvention. The bar in the entrance hall was a different experience- nice to sip a cocktail and watch dishes being prepped in the kitchen as you wait for your table. I had the "Big Anthony" parmesean porkchop $28) and this did not disappoint..saucy, salty and satisfying. The included side of garlic and chilli spaghetti (you can pick marinara or meat sauce too) was a good choice for such a heavy dish. Had the tiramisu as I always do in every italian restaurant and unfortunately I did not like this... way too creamy, the ratio to ladyfingers was way off. Via Tevere's still reigns supreme. The cheesecake though was surprisingly savory. The apricot topping was just sweet enough to balance out the savory cheese flavour. Our waiter was prompt but not really personable. The host in the suit and hipster round glasses though was particularly friendly and happy to chat if you wanted to. Of note: I would suggest a party of 4 max if you want to have a conversation as it's pretty loud in there on a Wednesday night at 830pm (small space, short ceilings, lots of diners). I'm not a big fan of Italian restaurants, but this place impressed me. Great atmosphere, excellent service, and delectable food. Based on previous Yelp reviews, I agree the avocado salad is a must have. The pork chop was really good and a decent portion, and the chicken piccata was probably the best I ever had. I gave it 4/5 as were all greatly disappointed to see how small the chicken piece was, considering the price of $26. It was so small that we questioned whether we got the right dish and showed our waiter the picture we had of this particular dish from a previous Yelp review which was easily double the size. He replied that it was probably an old posting. As we were dining "en famille" amongst 3 friends, we each had one "big" bite! About a week ago my partner and I had dinner at Pepino's, and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I was intrigued by the premise of making retro Italian-American food with fresh, high quality ingredients, and I thought that keeping the decor and menu staples from the previous establishment in the space, Nick's Spaghetti House, was an interesting one. I was curious if this was something they'd do with reverence. What we found was that the restaurant had a good sense of fun, but didn't seem to be taking the piss of the traditions that it was taking its lead from. We did notice that the demographic was unusually white and upper middle class for East Vancouver, which we chalked up to white people liking irony. We chose a five course sharing menu, which was reasonably priced at $45/ person. We chose Caesar salad, spaghetti Bolognese, veal scaloppini, sauteed mushrooms, and tiramisu. Everything was wonderful, and the service was warm and friendly. The only things that keep this restaurant from five stars is how long it took the veal to come out (we saw other tables who arrived after us being served before us) and the level of noise in the restaurant. I'm pretty sure the wait for the veal wasn't an issue with the server - she was highly attentive - something must have been going on in the kitchen. Portions were enormous. We both remarked that if we were going to come back, we would probably only order an appetizer or two and a pasta - no need for dessert, side, or meat course. The sharing menu was a fun experience though, and I'm glad we tried it. The irony levels weren't overwhelming, especially for Vancouver. The plastic ash tray that the bill comes out on was a fun touch, and I think ultimately the owner's did justice to the location's legacy - although I would like to hear what a regular of Nick's Spaghetti House thinks on this point. read more

Thursday evening found my wife, myself and four of our friends at Pepino's for dinner. I had contacted the restaurant earlier the same day and asked that red wine be decanted and on the table when we arrive and that the chef should choose dinner for the six of us. We were not disappointed. We arrived on time (6:30) and got settled at our table. Pepinos was already alive with many other guest who filled the red checkered tables. (Somewhere Nick is smiling.) The restaurant was alive with chat, glasses clinked and aromas filled the air. At our table water was offered and poured, Cocktails were ordered and delivered Negroni, Aperol Spritz and wine was served. Dinner service started with Antipasti, Cold Cuts & Fried Olives & Pickled Peppers, House Avocado Salad (Buffalo Mozzarella, Tomato, Pesto, Balsamic.) The olives and salad were perfectly seasoned, very tasty and we gobbled these up quickly. Next Primo, Ricotta Gnocchi, Pesto Primavera, Spaghetti & Meatballs, (The Bomb) Fettuccine with lobster. This was the longest course. We took our time. The pasta was very good. Next Secondo, Chicken Piccata, Lamb Chops Diavolo A split vote 3/3 chicken was brined deliciousness the lamb spicy deliciousness. Contorno, Crimini Mushrooms, Garlic & Parsley, Rapini, Garlic & Chili, Zucchini Parmesan ( zucchini was the big favourite but that's no surprise as cheese wins every time. Next Dolce, N.Y. Style Cheese Cake with Fruit Syrup, Tiramisu "Bambolona." Sweets were both equally delicious 5/1 Arlene was adamant that the Tiramisu was hands down the winner. The many courses sound like a lot and yes we likely over indulged. That said, the courses were staggered, reasonable portions served and we enjoyed a greater variety of flavours then had we all ordered individually. Paul Grunberg and his team of young staff from back of the house to the front were firing on all cylinders. We all agreed letting the house plan and serve the meal was the way to go. With a recommendation from the Georgia Straight we thought we would try Pepino's on Commercial Drive. It is on the north end of Commercial and the secret is definitely out because it was a very busy Friday night. Good thing we had a reservation because there was a line up to get a table without a reservation. We were seated immediately. Our first time at this place and we decided on the set dinner for to with wine pairing. Don't do the wine pairing if you are driving because you get four glasses (one for each course). We would highly recommend the house avocado salad. For our pasta dish we ordered the cannelloni and a meatball on the side. Their meatballs are the size of a softball and everyone seemed to be ordering one either I. The side or In the spaghetti and meatballs (comes with two huge meatballs). For our main we ordered the veal scalopini which was plenty. For the dessert we had the tiramisu. Everything was good and we left with our pants feeling a little snugger. Some other customers left with doggie bags but we finished everything. We left happy but we will need to get some exercise tomorrow. read more

Were big fans of Sávio Volpe, so when we found out about Pepino's we knew we had to check it out. They allow reservations, which is great for such a small space. The room is very authentic, and you can tell they stayed true to the vibe of Nicks- from the music to the dim lighting, it has a very old Italian vibe that is hard to find in Vancouver. The room is intimate but a bit crowded. We ordered the avocado salad, the spaghetti with meat sauce and the ravioli. The salad was tasty and fresh but it was the pastas that stole the show. The spaghetti in particular was incredible (and I'm not usually a spaghetti lover). The pastas, while flavourful, were somewhat dry as were those I saw going by. Cannelloni was huge and quite good, not great. Could use additional servers. But what I couldn't stand was the disposable bib situation. Lots of people clearly thought it somehow amusing wearing the bibs, no thanks! The veal was very good, would definitely order again if I found myself back at Pepinos. Service was ok, they seemed a little stretched thin both times I visited. Everything else was fine, a bit boring and overpriced. Caesar salad was tasteless, pastas were nothing special. Can't say enough good things about this place after dining here for the first time. I think it's already well known how good the food the food is here, so I'll just say that the experience and the service was amazing! Our server was attentive, made great suggestions and simply had fun with us without being over the top. I really appreciated that he picked up on the fact that I was pregnant and suggested a non-alcoholic beverage and also didn't make me feel weird about asking if the goat cheese in the avocado salad was pasteurized. Wish I had his name because he's very deserving of some kudos from the owners - he was wearing glasses and described himself as a wine nerd. Will dine here again if he's our server! read more

Had a great date night there with my wife tonight. This was our first time there. Very old school decor. We had the avocado salad, spaghetti & meat ball, pork chop parm and cheesecake. Everything tasted great. Price is reasonable. Service was good. Will try to come again next month. read more
